We are On The Road Again this Summer!
I
t's time for the 2012 Junior Nationals! The May/June Junior National Edition has been another fun issue to work on. We've included many exciting features that focus on Junior Nationals! We are introducing a new feature titled Graphic Designers of the Livestock Industry. We've included some of the top graphic designers that work on many of the ads you have seen in our magazine. In the next several issues we will focus on different businesses/ fields "of the Livestock Industry" to share with our readers. Our big Junior National Preview starts on PAGE 42.! We preview many of the 2012 Junior Nationals from the Angus to the Shorthorn breeds! Also, be sure to check out our new Hall of Fame member on PAGE 86! The spring has been very busy for us. The Blackout Jackpot was a fun show to host! The Showtimes awarded over $11,000 to exhibitors! It was a great experience giving back to the show cattle industry. While we have shown at
hundreds of livestock shows over the past 15 years, it was a nice change to host our own show. We would like to thank everyone who showed at the Blackout Jackpot as well as everyone who helped us put it on. The Showtimes has recently joined the Livestock Publications Council! We look forward to being a part of the LPC and what it has to offer! Finally, we have spent all spring working on our new office! We will be sure to post photos to our blog soon! This June we will be hitting the road with our Showtimes booth! Look for us at the Maine-Anjou/ Chi Junior Nationals in Ohio as well as the Shorthorn and Hereford Junior Nationals in Nebraska! We look forward to seeing many of you this summer! We are already busy working on our 2012 State Fair Edition and are excited to share it with our readers later this summer! Sincerely, Brian J. 113TH AMERICAN ROYAL LIVESTOCK SHOW UPDATE
Kansas City’s 113th American Royal Livestock Show is scheduled for October 24 through November 4, 2012. Junior Market Shows will highlight the first weekend with the Junior Premium Auction climaxing those activities on Sunday, October 28. A full slate of breeding cattle shows sponsored by their respective national and/or state associations are the backbone of the American Royal and are scheduled throughout the run of the show. Several breeds have sales planned in conjunction with the American Royal as well. A new, open to the world, feeder calf show for steers and heifers has been added to the lineup. There is no sale with this show. It will feature single entries of 2012 born prospects. The Supreme Junior Heifer Show headlines the show on Sunday, November 4. This is the Stanley Stout Scholarship Program that features the competition of all the breed champions from the junior show. The Boer Goats will take over the Governors Hall with two ABGA sanctioned point shows on October 30 and 31. The Royal Premier Show is on Tuesday and the Royal Classic Show is on Wednesday. In keeping with the American Royal Mission, “to provide scholarships, education, awards and competitive learning experiences that rewards hard work, leadership skills and agrarian values”, there is special emphasis on the judging contests. In 2012 there will be a full slate of livestock, meats and crops contests for 4-H, FFA and collegiate contestants. A detailed show schedule is posted at www.americanroyal. com. The 2012 entry deadline is September 10. Complete premium book information along with the entry form and online entries will be available at www.americanroyal.com in late spring. For further information please contact the American Royal Livestock Department at karriem@ americanroyal.com or (816) 569-4054. The American Royal, a not-for-profit 501c3 organization that benefits youth and education, is now in its 113th year and celebrates our region’s rich agricultural heritage through competition, education and entertainment.

ocus Marketing Group, Inc. is a full service livestock marketing agency. We pride ourselves on top notch customer service. We truly love what we do and there are no better people to work with than those in the livestock community. Whether it be print design, web design, photography, videos or sale consulting, let Focus be your source, “our only FOCUS is you”.
I love working on the print / design side of things. It’s a nice change of pace from life on the road taking photos and videos. But don’t get me wrong, I love taking pictures and videos and dealing face to face with our customers, but as I said, it’s a nice change of pace to be in the office and working on designs as well. I love being so diversified with Focus and getting to work on all aspects of livestock marketing, whether I’m out shooting pictures or videos, in the office working on print ads or web design, out looking through somebody’s sale calves, or working on our ranch, it’s great to be so diversified with this company.

It is SCI’s goal to help build each clients brand so that they are recognized as the clear leader in their market segment. We want a consumer to think our client’s first during breeding season when you are searching for the perfect bull to mate your cows to, or when a high caliber steer or heifer is what your in the market for. It is this focus on branding and innovative new age marketing that helps set our clients apart from the rest. Today, SCI has evolved from a graphic design shop into a two full time employee Agriculture Marketing Agency. We continue to work with the best clients in the industry and always keep in mind it’s not the size of the company it’s what the company can do for its clients that ultimately matters.

ivestock marketing and photography has always been a passion of mine. At a young age I would take my mom’s camera and go out in the pasture and picture every cow we owned. I attended Oklahoma State University majoring in Agribusiness and Marketing and then after college I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to start my own business, Advantage Livestock Marketing. Our main focus is livestock photography and videography, and we design ads, sale catalogs, and develop marketing campaigns for our customers as well. n

ADVANTAGE
Advantage Livestock Marketing was founded in 2009 by myself, Katie Johnson. I grew up in Canton, Georgia and exhibited steers and heifers from the time I was 9. My family still owns and operates Chief Club Calves and Advantage Livestock producing Crossbred, Maine, and Hereford steers and heifer. In 2011, my good friend, Sarah Weisinger came on as part of the team. Sarah grew up on the western slope of Colorado showing steers and pigs and attended Iowa State University. Sarah and her husband Nate own and operate Weisinger Farms, producing high quality show pigs and steers. My sister, Kallie Johnson, is also involved in the business and is our new web design manager. She currently attends the University of Georgia and was a member of the 2010-2011 Butler Community College Livestock Judging team.

The Showtimes, Inc. Ads, Flyers, Logos, Signs and Banners BY: BRIAN J. REID
I
n addition to working on the layout and design in The Showtimes, we also design ads, logos, banners, feed bags, facebook covers, business cards, signs and sale catalogs. Over the past five years we have designed ads for people all over America. From our very own Showtimes logo and shield logo to ads for Trausch Farms, Matt Lautner, Tim Burke, Simpson Livestock, and Ranch-Way Feeds. We have designed a wide varitey of ads from sleek and simple to grunge and detailed.
One of our favorite design projects was designing the January/February 2012 Stock Show Edition of The Showtimes Magazine. For our special 5th Year Issue we created a unique 3 page cover that opened from the middle. It also included a special metallic ink as well as a belly band that held the cover flaps together. It is always our goal to think outside the box and design an ad in a way that hasn’t been done before in the livestock industry. We feel the most important part about having an ad or logo designed is standing out from your competition. While most people feel that their ad should include as many photos as possible and have an exciting ad that pops, we feel that it is just as benificial to keep it simple. The best example of this is our own Showtimes Marketing; our white logo on a black background. It is simple, yet it stands out from many colored ads with photos. If you would like to have us work on your next ad or logo please contact us today! Please visit theshowtimesmagazine.com/design to view more examples of our designs.

P
rairie View Farms, owned by Orlan and Alan Miller, is a third-generation purebred Angus operation located in Gridley, Illinois. Around April 1st, PVF held their first and second annual production sale; selling fall born heifer calves for show. The sale has been extremely successful and a great marketing angle for them. Then a year ago fall, they launched one of the first Angus-only web based sales; selling spring born heifers and steers. Alan has a Ph.D. in ruminant nutrition from the University of Illinois and worked for 15 years in the Extension Service in Illinois educating producers on cost of beef production. He left extension last September to be at the farm full time. He took a small

show herd he and his sister Cathy created while they were young and turned it into a nationally recognized Angus breeding program that has been extremely successful at all national shows. The Proven Queen cow family, Blackbird, Missie have all come from our herd, as well as PVF New Horizon, PVF ALL Payday, PVF Insight, PVF Windfall, and Dameron PVF Raptor. Alan judges nationally at all levels and was a member of the National Champion 4-H state judging team from Illinois and the University of Illinois judging team.

PVF now has about 250 cows on the farm, and sell more than 70 animals each year through these sales and private treaty. They work closely with embryo cooperator herds.

T
he Limousin Breed has a 20,000-year history of producing lean beef. The breed’s heritage can be traced back to ancient cave drawings near the Limoges region of France, the breed’s land of origin. These cave drawings depicted animals of much the same conformation and color as modern-day Limousin.
The first Limousin bull imported in 1968 to Canada was Prince Pompadour, bred at the highly respected Pompadour Estate of France. The first Limousin semen was available from Prince Pompadour in July
1969.
As the first Limousin cattle arrived in North America, producers interested in the breed realized the need for an organization to promote and develop it in the United States and Canada. At a meeting in spring 1968 at the Albany Hotel in Denver, 15 cattle producers formed the North American Limousin Foundation (NALF). NALF has grown from the original 99 founder members to more than 3,000 active members who register nearly 25,000 head annually.

he first Maine-Anjou imported into North America came to Canada in 1969. These cattle were then introduced to the United States through artificial insemination. The Maine-Anjou Society, Inc. was incorporated in Nebraska in 1969, and included both American and Canadian members. In 1971, the name was changed to the International Maine-Anjou Association and headquarters were set up in the Livestock Exchange Building
in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1976, the named was changed to the American Maine-Anjou Association. In 2001, the American Maine-Anjou Association purchased a building in Platte City, Missouri as headquarters. The Maine-Anjou breed excels in performance/feed efficiency, disposition and superb carcass traits. Dominance of feeding trials coupled with favorable returns on dollars invested have made Maine-Anjou cattle a feedlot manager's dream.

H
offman Ranch is a family owned and operated cattle ranch that has over 50 years’ experience breeding top quality cattle. Dennis Hoffman began his career through the 4-H/FFA programs in Oregon. He spent several years working for established purebred ranches breeding several National Champions. The knowledge he gained from his work experience allowed him the opportunity to build his own fault free, low maintenance and highly functional cow herd. This allowed Dennis’s son Jason to come back from Kansas State and help his dad build a genetic program that both seedstock and commercial cattlemen could utilize. In 2008 the Hoffman family relocated their business from McArthur, CA to Thedford, NE in order to be more centrally located and provide growth opportunities. The Hoffman’s have an intense ET program trying to achieve marketability to seedstock producers, commercial cattlemen, and the show cattle industries. The Hoffman family has won several National Champions at both open shows and Jr. Nationals. They have an annual female sale which is September 30, 2012, their first annual bull sale on February 15, 2013, and an Internet Fall Female Sale on the third Wednesday in March.

012 marks the 40th Anniversary for the Chi breed. Chianina genetics offer the beef industry the type of cattle that will perform and reproduce in harsh environments, feed efficiently and produce a high yielding, high grading carcass. These are the type of cattle to keep you in business. The Chianina breed is best described as a paternal breed that sires cattle that are born easily, grow fast and efficiently producing market relevant red
meat while producing females that are reproductively efficient, easy to maintain in different environments and have added longevity being producttive well into their teens. Chianina influenced cattle have dominated every major steer, all-breed heifer shows and carcass contests across the U.S. over the past 30 years. T
he Simmental is among the oldest and most widely distributed of all breeds of cattle in the world. Semen was introduced into the United States in 1967, with the first half-blood Simmental calf born at Geyser, MT in February, 1968. The American Simmental Association (ASA) was founded by a contingent of breeders who came from other breed backgrounds and shared a common goal of establishing a breed base on sound, perfor-
mance principles. Thus, in its 30+ years of existence, ASA has often been in the forefront of beef industry innovation and progress. The American Junior Simmental Association's mission statement is, "The AJSA strives to enhance youth potential for life successes by instilling a comprehensive understanding of the beef industry while developing leadership, networking, and communication skills."

Kayla Morrow and her steer "Big Papa" have had one of the most successful runs showing in history! We share the story of the steer that nearly went undefeated. BY LISA REID, CO
80 THE SHOWTIMES MAY/JUNE 2012
E
veryone has their own reason for showing livestock. Some do it for the champion banners and the pride and sense of accomplishment that are tied to it. Some do it to promote their genetics. Some do it as a mere way to pass the time. While everyone aims to achieve their set goals in the show ring, this winter show season, one individual not only achieved suc-
cess, but experienced it in a way that is rarely seen. Eighteen year old Kayla Morrow from Nevada, Missouri took home not one, not two, not even three champion titles with her prospect steer “Big Papa,” but an astounding 21 Grand Champions and 2 Reserve Grand Champions. From Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Nebraska to North Dakota, Indiana and Colorado, Kayla and her dad hauled “Big Papa” around the country to a grand total of 23 shows. If you do the math, you will calculate that he never placed outside of the win-

ner’s circle. Purchased from Tracy Goretska with Goretska Show Steers, “Big Papa” has proven that one steer is capable of catching the eye of multiple judges – a rare feat for a prospect. Kayla described how being on “Big Papa’s” lead through all the success felt, “Words honestly could not describe how happy I am about my successful year with my steer, because I don’t think anyone in history has ever won this many times with one steer in the period I did. I feel like I have worked really hard to get to this point and it surely does pay off. My favorite feeling other than when my steer gets slapped on the back and I get that hand shake from the judge is
whenever my father, Kevin Morrow, and I get in the truck to head home and he gives me a highfive. “Big Papa” is not only just a show steer to me. I seriously care for him just like my own friend or family. What makes him so unique and special is that he isn’t just a good calf, but a great one. I don’t think he has a flaw. He is all around a perfect show steer. It’s amazing how many people have told me how lucky I am to have a steer like him. Not to mention that he is a HUGE baby. I have never seen a steer that I can hug and love all over or one that will come up to me and play like Big Papa.” The uniqueness and high quality of “Big Papa” has not only attracted judges’ attentions, but that of Lautner Farms as well. Lautner Farms is currently working on the cloning of “Big Papa” to come up with a bull battery that is just as
good as him, if not better. When asked about the driving forces that led to him being cloned, Kayla replied, “Not only is it very rare for a steer to win this many times in one’s prospecting season, but I highly doubt that anyone has ever seen anything like him. He is one of a kind.” So while “Big Papa’s” future will be that of the Missouri State Fair in August, if everything works out as planned, in a few years’ time, one will be able to acquire “his” semen from Lautner Farms with the capability of instilling his same unique traits and qualities into their show calf progeny that have taken the cattle world by storm this past show season. ▪ CONGRATULATIONS KAYLA ON YOUR SUCCESSFUL RUN! Mike Hartman NEBRASKA
Mike Hartman was born and raised in the purebred business and active in 4-H and FFA as a youngster. He has spent his entire life breeding, promoting and marketing livestock. Mike has experience with all breeds. He, along with his dad and brother, were involved in the Charolais, Angus and Salers breeds for years and he has been involved with the Maine-Anjou breed since the breed’s early importation into North America. Recently, Harman has been making a mark in the Simmental breed. Mike owns and operates Hartman Cattle Company in Tecumseh, Nebraska. The Hartman’s have enjoyed a tremendous run in the beef business throughout the years. The least visible, but most important part of Hartman’s business, is the production and marketing of commercial and purebred bulls. Mike feels an important issue to remember is that we must be aware that we’re all in this (the beef industry) together — seedstock producers, cow-calf man, feedlot operator, packer, restaurateur, everybody. “If we don’t all continue to improve the quality and consistency of our end product, consumer demand declines and we’re all dead in the water,” claims Mike.

runs deep. My family was very active in both the state and national level of the Polled Hereford breed. My brother was the Chairman of the National Polled Hereford Junior Board, my mother was a board member of the Polletts, the National Polled Hereford Women’s Association and was also named Pollette of the Year. And I was the 1983 National Polled Hereford Queen.
I remember when I was finally old enough to show at the age of seven. My father took my brother and I to Falkland Farms in Pennsylvania to search for our show project. My father told us we could each pick out a heifer from the select group for sale. To no surprise, I picked out a line back Hereford heifer that was not very good to say the least. But, I loved that heifer and showed her like she was the best animal at the show.
Uniquely, I met my husband, Todd, in Reno, Nevada at the Polled Hereford Junior National, and were married 2 years later. At the time, he was the herdsman for ACE Polled Herefords, which later became Star Lake Cattle Ranch. Todd is now Operations Manager at Star Lake.
I grew up in an age of glycerin soap to bone legs and 3M glue to do tails. We would rinse our steers and heifers, brush the hair straight down and curl the hair with a currycomb then start brushing the hair straight up until the cattle were dry. Wow, were we thrilled when dad finally bought a blower. Some of the best memories I have from growing up include working cattle in the evenings after dinner. My whole family would go outside, tie the steers to the back of my dad's vet truck to exercise the steers. My brother and I showed heifers and steers at the county and state fairs. Then we ventured into the regional and national show arena. My first junior national was the second Polled Hereford Junior National in 1977. Being a third generation Hereford breeder, my love for the breed of cattle
My daughter, Kasey, fell in love with cattle at a young age. As with most kids in the cattle industry, she could not wait to go with her dad. She would ride the bus home from school and peddle her bicycle 2 miles across the field everyday to be with her dad at the barn. Todd and I always said that we would never push showing cattle on Kasey. Luckily, it was in her blood and she loved it. Like me, at the age of seven, Kasey took her first steps into the showring at 7-years-old and took her final steps out of the junior showring at the age of 21. Todd and I were blessed with a lifestyle where Kasey did not have to go to the babysitter after school. We always felt that raising kids in the agriculture business was second to none. At a young age, kids learn the value of hard work, responsibility and dedication. Todd and I did not want things
handed to Kasey that she did not work for. We wanted Kasey to acquire a variety of skills growing up by taking on leadership roles and participating in public speaking opportunities. Kasey became active in her 4-H club and later in her FFA Chapter. She was also active at her high school where she was a student council member, class officer, editor of the school newspaper, on the yearbook staff and graduated valedictorian of her class. Plus, she was a member of the Oklahoma Junior Hereford Association, Oklahoma Junior Maine-Anjou Association, Oklahoma Chi Association and the National Junior Hereford Association. She also showed sheep and barrel raced. Upon graduating from Oklahoma State University, Kasey became the Director of Youth Activities at the American Maine-Anjou Association in Kansas City, Missouri. As a show mom, I always made sure the “little things” were taken care of. When I say the little things, I mean everything from making sure contest entries were sent in to regular meals being consumed throughout the day at the show. And like any mother, I took pride in Kasey’s show day look. Her clothes were always ironed and ready. Plus, as long as she would let me, I had her hair in a cute ponytail with a bow. Oh, how Kasey hated the bows. If I would have left that task up to her fa-

One of my proudest moments as a show mom was watching Kasey walk out of the showring with a smile on her face after being place second with a heifer that was named National Champion the year prior. It is those times that bring the competitive edge in us all back to basics of doing what we love as a family.
ther, she would have been showing in stripped pants with a polka dot shirt and 2 pig tails that were not even. As Kasey grew older and took on more responsibilities, I realized once she walked into the showring everything was out of my control. It was her time to shine. Kasey was fortunate to be successful in the showring and our family is the first to acknowledge how fortunate Kasey was to have been raised at and amongst the great people of Star Lake Ranch. One of many rewarding times was when Todd and I were asked to serve as National Advisors to the National Junior Hereford Association. We

thoroughly enjoyed the bonds and relationships formed with members of the Junior Board. In a way, the kids became kids of my own who would come to me for personal advice, to relieve stress or with issues relating to their time serving on the board. My goal was to be a listening ear, a shoulder to lean on while offering encouragement and reminding the kids to enjoy that time of their life. There is so much our family has gained by all of us being raised in the agriculture industry. One of the first things that comes to mind is all the knowledge and opportunities we have acquired. But probably most important as a family, is all the lifelong friends and acquaintances we have made.
national.
When Kasey was young and in the heat of her showing career, it was about having fun for our family. It was not uncommon for me to have a car full of kids leaving the fairgrounds during the show to go swimming. Our focus was to make sure showing always remained fun. Even to this day, it is not uncommon to see Todd or I in the middle of a water fight during the summer junior
As a show mom who has seen her little girl age in and out of her showing career, my word of advice is cherish every moment because kids grow up so fast. What Todd and I thought would be never ending was over before we knew it. I went from watching Kasey as 7-year-old showing her first heifer to now watching my daughter mentor junior exhibitors who enter the show ring with their first show heifer saying good luck and have fun. As a show mom, it doesn't get any better. â–Ş

“ The livestock industry has sincerely blessed my life with passion and purpose that most students my age haven’t been fortunate to find yet, and for that I am truly grateful.”
JENNIFER EWING, IL ”Through my participation in the Junior Livestock Program, I have gained life skills that will benefit me, no matter what I do.” From raising and showing his own sheep to assisting his peers and younger exhibitors, Kylan’s character shines through his involvement in the livestock industry. Not only has he acquired successes within the show ring with his sheep, showmanship skills, and taken a leadership position within his FFA chapter, his positive attitude and outlook on what being a part of the livestock industry entitles proves that he has just scraped the surface of what he will contribute to our industry in the years to come.
KYLAN MOGG, OK “ The family bond that is created through daily chores, cleaning the barn, and delivering your show heifer’s first calf is something that you can’t purchase off the store shelf.” Julie’s involvement within the livestock industry is not limited to her family’s cow/calf operation. She has held multiple officer positions, been an active member on the marketing and quiz bowl team, and lead fitting and showmanship demonstrations for local youth. Having a passion for the Hereford breed, Julie has been successful with both her cattle and showmanship at the county, state, and national level, has helped plan and organize a Junior National, as well as served as the Wisconsin Hereford Association Princess and Queen.
JULIE WIECHERT, WI “Agriculture is all that I have known my whole life and I am very passionate about the beef industry in particular.” Curtis has not only been active, but successful within the Angus, Salers, and South Devon breeds in addition to exhibiting market steers and hogs through 4-H. He is a tremendous livestock judging talent where he was a member of the 2008 National Champion Livestock Judging Team and was recognized this year with All-American Honors for his success both judging and in the classroom at Northeastern Junior College. He plans to attend law school and work towards an Ag Law degree.

Meet the Exhibitor
Kayla Campbell
The livestock industry through the eyes of an exhibitor, a producer, a photographer & ultimately a champion. BY KAYLA CAMPBELL, OH
S
ome of you may have seen me a time or two in the show ring, pictured in a magazine, behind a computer at a livestock sale, or behind a camera at the backdrop. All of these places involve cattle and that, without a doubt, is what I am most passionate about. However, the place I enjoyed most while growing up was the show runs at my parent’s farm in Cedarville, Ohio. Following in the footsteps of my family, I was determined to be involved in the show barn. I don’t recall when it actually began, but I do remember my first calves with names like “Bambie,” “Tipper,” and “Buddy Love.” Things sure have come a long way since those days! My grandpa always said I would make a good ball player, but I never gave a thought to that route after spending some time in the barn. It began with heifers prior to my 4-H years, but when I turned nine, I knew I wanted a steer. I’ll never forget county fair that year; it came down to my steer “Rocky” and my neighbor’s steer.
I clearly wasn’t ready to part with Rocky, so I just stopped showing in the ring. Doing so was something most wouldn’t do when being one of the top animals in contention for champion, but I just wasn’t ready for it to end. Looking back on it now, it wasn’t over that day; it was just beginning. After a couple more years of feeding and exhibiting steers at the county fair level, we were off to the state fair. Just a few more years exhibiting there, and we were in the Sale of Champions with the Ohio State University Marching Band playing in the background. Now that I have competed in a countless number of shows, spent hours in the barn, and had two reserve champion state fair steers, “Wee-Man” and “Vinnie”, I find it safe to say I have had a remarkable experience! Since my steer days are over, I have ventured back into the heifer ring.
This year, my family and I raised a very special heifer sired by “Mama’s Boy”. After 16 years of having a Campbell junior exhibitor, this is our final show season, for at least for a while. So it was a blessing to be able to raise our own high quality heifer for the show ring. We have had a great run with this heifer as she took home banners for Reserve Champion Heifer at AGS Scarlet and Gray and also Grand Champion Heifer in both rings, at Clark County Cattle Battle. I couldn’t have had a better spirited show heifer for my last year, and that makes for a great last ride. In the livestock industry, there is more to being successful than just winning shows. Some of the greatest
...help others, be kind, clean up after your messes and even when you think you are appreciative enough, you should appreciate more.” -Kayla Campbell
accomplishments I achieved as a 4-H exhibitor were being named the 2001 Outstanding Market Beef Exhibitor, the 2006 Champion Beef Showman, and the 2008 Beef Skillathon Champion, all at the Ohio State Fair. These triumphs proved to me that I was knowledgeable and passionate about cattle and the livestock industry. One of my favorite quotes growing up in the show barn was John C. Maxwell’s: “Champions don’t become champions in the ring, they are merely recognized there.” Although the quote is actually a reference to wrestling, I found deep meaning to it and applied it to my own lifestyle. I lived by it in the show
barn, at shows, and even in my sleep. I can remember walking my steers and re-rinsing at midnight while getting calls from friends who thought I was crazy to be working on cattle at night. While working day-in and day-out, I would always remind myself of this quote. It is what guided me through the rough days and long hours and re-
minded me to never give up on my dreams. The most important value I have learned through working with many different animals is that winning isn’t everything. Having the ability to understand and work with animals is a talent that is developed with time and trust. I hope the youth of future generations can understand what a great opportunity it is. While I am in the spotlight, I must give credit to my parents and brother. My family has not only supported me in the show ring, but they have made it possible for me to be in it. Typically, my parents stay home from the shows
to care for the 150- 200 club-calf cows we have at home. My father, David, owns his own crop/property and casualty insurance agency, while my mother, Jody, runs the farm. My brother, Opie, is absolutely the hardest worker I have ever known. Without my brother at home and at the shows, I would be nothing. In 2001, Opie showed the Grand Champion AGR Holiday Classic Prospect Steer and the 2002 Reserve Champion Ohio State Fair Market Steer. After accomplishing something rarely done, winning the first and last show of a season with the same steer, Opie decided he had achieved what he wanted. At twelve and thirteen years of age, we had then created the best team I could ever imagine as he focused on clipping and fitting and I focused on hair care and showing. As we became more specialized, our weekends at the shows became smoother, while we both became more skilled and efficient in our areas of expertise.
Now that I am nearing the end of the last year of my junior show career, it’s overwhelming to think about all the shows I have attended, steers and heifers I have shown, friends I have made, and friends that have turned into family. By far the most benefit of this experience, is how much this industry has encouraged me to grow and mature into the person I am today. There isn’t a single moment of my past that I would regret. I have learned to grow
from my mistakes, to appreciate the successes and to do what makes me happy. Now that I have grown into an adult and have graduated from college, I look at the industry from a different perspective. If there were anything I could go back and do, or advice I could give to current and upcoming exhibitors, it would be to help others, be kind, clean up after your messes and even when you think you are appreciative enough, you should appreciate more. This industry is an expensive one. This passion and hobby we share isn’t cheap, so thank your parents, grandparents, family and friends for all that they do whether they help buy feed, help rinse or even just turn the lights off at night. It takes a team at home and behind the scenes to collect those purple banners we all like to hang on the walls. When you’re at shows, be thankful of those who are hosting the event. Those involved on the backside are not there just because they love it, they do it to enhance and support our youth. Notice the sponsors at the shows and thank them. Without their donations, the shows wouldn’t be what they are today. But most importantly, be sure to surround yourself with people who believe in your dreams and aspirations, work hard-never give up, and you will be able to lead yourself to success. ▪
The Showtimes would like to thank Kayla for sharing her story and wish her luck with all of her future endeavors! 108 THE SHOWTIMES MAY/JUNE 2012

The Intercollegiate Livestock Judging Contest requires six-member teams, with five members’ scores counting toward team awards. Contestants judge four animals in separate cattle, swine, lamb and goat classes. The animals are evaluated on conformation and appearance. The contestants turn in scorecards as well as present an oral set of reasons for choosing the class animals in the order they did. Formal judges’ scores are compared to the contestants’, and point values are given or deducted depending on how similar the contestant scored the breed class.

Growing up in Newcastle and being around cattle nearly my entire life has truly helped me to appreciate everything that goes in to showing livestock. Winning the Oklahoma Youth Expo has been a dream of mine since I first started showing, over ten years ago. Now that my dream has become a reality, I have developed an even greater respect for what it takes to win. The overwhelming feelings I experienced really can’t be described with words. Nothing else I have experienced in my life compares to the way it felt to win this show. Fortunately, I’ve been surrounded with great family and friends that have made this whole thing possible. I would like to thank Steve Bonham, my step dad, for helping make my show career a success, and I would also like to thank the crew at the barn. I especially would like to thank the lord. He has blessed me with such a great life and without him none of this would be possible.

Monarch DSUL FreckLeS 23c DSUL Freckles 23C is one of those rare females. She is the off spring of a old show heifer(Sim/Angus) I showed back in my day. I bred the heifer to a Limousin bull, and 23C was born. She is 20 years old with calf at side. 23C even at her age is still raising many outstanding progeny that have proven to go on and have much success. I then bred 23C to Broker(Limousin) for her first calf. DSUL Too Sweet 55E will turn 17 this spring. Too Sweet’s second calf was DSUL Sweetness 232H, who was the Champion Limousin Female in Denver 2000. DSUL takes pride in our cow families with longevity and predictability. All three females here produced a slew of Champions.

SHOW.RITE TIP
A
re you ready for the summer time shows? Are you far enough along in condition, do you need to make feed adjustments, how’s your hair, do you need to make some management adjustments, etc.? One of the first things I look at is if they are far enough along. In other words, are they fat enough for this time of the year? If it’s a steer you should be in that 1200 to 1250 range 45 to 60 days out from the show. If it’s a heifer you should be looking at her not from a weight stand point but from a condition stand point. Is she in real good condition 45 to 60 days out? If you meet either of these you are good to go. You are sitting in a position that you can cruise right into the show. As it gets hot you won’t have to worry about being behind the eight ball on condition and trying to get them to eat in the heat. Also while you are cruising you are more able to be growing hair due to the main reason that you’re not feeding so hard. When you are coasting your calf is the best time to be looking at ShowRite Cruiser. It’s a low energy, high fiber ration that does just what its name says……..Cruise. Maybe you might need to even slow your calf down even more. That’s
when you can be adding some Stretch to that ration. It will act as a filler as well as help with rib expansion. It also keeps the gut working properly while in the holding period. If you think you are behind the eight ball then I would suggest trying GLU-Coat to increase fat coat as well as feed intake.

Look at your hair. That old dead hair should be gone at least 90 days out from the show. The rule of thumb is that you need 90 to 120 days to get the optimal hair that we all desire for the show. Get that old hair out and start keeping them cool. Get them in out of the sun and put them in the barn under fans or get them in the cooler if you have one. A cooler is not a necessity but whether you have one or not you still need to get them in early and turn out later after dark. Besides keeping them clean and cool during the hot months, I feel that the BEST tool in hair growth is to be using Hide and Hair. I believe without a shadow of a doubt that it will help you along with good management. Hopefully this give you a few time lines to meet that might help you out to be more ready on show day. Have fun at the show and enjoy the summer!

It’s Inoculation Time! One of the main goals of this article in each Showtimes issue is to challenge our junior livestock members and their families to make a difference in this world and do something with the life your Creator gave you, not waste it. This issue’s article is from a good friend involved in an awesome ministry:
T
he snow has melted and the signs of life of another spring season is in full swing. The transformation from brown to green has begun and the time for unpredictable weather is present . . .seventy degrees one day and four inches of snow the next. We all know the changing seasons compromise the immune system, so that means it is time to dust off the syringe, shake up the antibiotics,
176 THE SHOWTIMES MAY/JUNE 2012
and round up the livestock. Is not a strategic herd health management plan essential for a profitable livestock operation? Whether it is IBR, BVD, PI3, leptospirosis, or brucellosis that we are vaccinating against or all the above, we don’t spare the horses when it comes to guarding our animals against these potentially devastating diseases, and why would we? Everyone knows these viruses exist and the most prudent thing to do is to inoculate against them before they overwhelm our animals. As the saying goes “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
Have you ever thought that our kids and young adults, ourselves for that matter, need an inoculation plan as well? No, I am not suggesting you run your family members into the head catch and pump them full of meds! Ok . . this might do a few some good. I’m kidding. But I am not kidding about inoculating against the influences of the culture. We don’t realize that pervasive and destructive ideas, which break down our intellectual immune system, are bombarding our kids and us constantly. TV, computer, music, friends; we can’t escape society’s influences.
Why do half the marriages end in divorce, or even worse, why do young adults not even think that marriage is necessary? Why have we aborted 50,000,000 million of our babies since the 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision? Why does our culture think there is no purpose to life? Cultural diseases such as relativism, materialism, Marxism, Humanism, and whateverism, just to name a few, are running rampant. Our vaccination plan is virtually non-existent! If your stomach is starting to knot up . . . don’t worry, just pop a couple of Tums and keep reading! Here is the good news. A very effective vaccination program has been developed! The Cowboy Academy has been created to teach young and old alike how to defend and resist the ideas that are leading our culture over the cliff. Our camps and conferences provide an
inoculation plan, which exposes our young adults to the best and strongest ideas that the world has to offer, but expose them in a way, and in an environment, that allows them to build up intellectual immunity. We must familiarize them with the best arguments on all sides of an issue, and teach them to evaluate the arguments critically. In addition, we help them discover answers to the questions they are starving to understand. Questions such as: Why are we here? How do we know what’s “really real”? How do we determine right and wrong? What is the meaning of life? Do I have a purpose? All these ideas and answers are called worldviews. The Cowboy Academy’s worldview instruction equips people to think clearly and to think “Christianly.” It lifts the veil, so to speak, on issues our culture uses to
mislead them, and sets in place the ability to correctly filter information and see things for what they are. Don’t we all want our kids to see clearly, stand up for what they believe, and make wise choices that will continue to protect them from culture’s influences? The Cowboy Academy can provide the inoculation they need! This is something worth thinking about. ▪ With Him, Shay Miles (Shay is the Founder and President of The Cowboy Academy. is extra big bodied, sound and big topped. He is moderate and heavy structured. Lastly and perhaps most importantly is the cow power that lies on the bottom side. He hails from the same dam as GCC Cerveza, one of the greatest known Whiskey son’s to date. With his baldy face, his head turning style, and the greatness of pedigree on top and bottom, Whizard is a must use sire for the coming year. Safe to use on heifers.

Some of the greatest pedigree’s of the Angus breed can be found on his papers with 914K, Jet Streams sister falling on his bottom side. His dam is a broody made female that has rib and depth combined with femininity and overall eye appeal. With a 78 BW, this herd sire is perfect for use on heifers.
