KEEPING TRUE TO OUR ROOTS IN A MODERN WORLD. mart devices, prepackaged meals, tourist attractions and TV. All of the things that were created to make our lives easier or more entertaining are in turn sucking the “Real” out of life.

This Fall we were able to travel to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania for KILE. We took a detour on the way and stopped by our Nation’s Capital. Just standing on the sidewalk between the Capital and the Supreme Court Building you can’t help but feel the history. Looking at the white stone buildings you think not only of the people who built these mammoth landmarks, but of the men who founded the county itself. They were able to do all of this without all of the conveniences we have today. After the show was over we made our way to Hershey, PA for another side trip. We anticipated seeing the factories that make some of the world’s most famous chocolate. We were shocked to find a huge amusement park and tourist center. We took the “factory tour” which turned out to be an animated ride where cartoon characters described the chocolate making process. There was nothing “Real” about the tour. Commercialism took the place of imagination and true knowledge.

Growing up in the Ag Industy you learn a lot about life at an early age. You learn what it takes to grow and raise the food that feeds America. You learn the hard work it takes to run a company or farm. You learn the “Real” that the rest of the world doesn’t see. What is “Real?” Show kids like Piper Cates(4) who can give you accurate, detailed descriptions of life events; or Kiera Bremer(9) who ran the Showtimes LIVE camera for the entire American Royal Steer Show. “Real” is emotions tied to loading your steer on the truck following the sale or baking pies from homegrown pumpkins. The World is slowly but surely losing the “Real” factor. It is important that this industry continues to produce the sharp, able, well-rounded kids like Piper and Kiera who will carry that tradition on in the future. The Showtimes is dedicated to covering not only the show ring and livestock, but the “Real” people behind them. • Enjoy!

We lost our dear friend Maureen Broad on October 6th. Maureen, along with her husband Loren, ran the Sullivan Supply trailer in Colorado and Wyoming while we were growing up and showing. She made a huge impact on us and our love for the industry. One of a kind. To this day, she continued to help us at the Blackout Jackpot and is a member of The Showtimes Hall of Fame. NOV/DEC 2018 / THE SHOWTIMES

Well folks, there’s not much time to rest this time of year with all the stock shows around the country; but there is always time to eat. Got to keep the energy up and, of course, I’m always watching my waistline. I don’t want to have to invest in new clothes due to a sudden weight loss from lack of eating! I’ve given this article some serious thought (as I usually do), and you all know by now that I take my eating very serious when I’m on the road. I have come up with what I think are some very good and diverse choices for you to sample if you so desire.

LITTLE MISS BBQ

4301 University Dr. Phoenix, AZ 85304 602.437.1177

I’m making a pretty large loop this time by starting out in Tulsa, Oklahoma with an old standby place that I feel might be the ultimate experience for the stock show faithful. That would be Brownies Hamburger Stand. Just as the name implies, that’s what you get at Brownies. Some of the best old-fashioned burgers to be found! The quality and quantity are unsurpassed at this little joint - not to mention the affordable prices. In addition to the great burgers, I like to partake of the chili cheese fries or maybe the hand breaded onion straws. I have a tough time deciding on which to choose from so once in while I just do both. Heading north out of Tulsa I make a pit stop in Kansas City, Missouri. I find myself pulling into Herrera’s Tenderloin Grill. Now you can’t go wrong here (unless you try the pig snout sandwich, I just can’t do that). This place has been around since 1932 and has changed hands a couple of times; but the current owners are dedicated to the same quality and service as the original founders. The breaded pork tenderloin sandwich is a pleasant surprise when you’ve been having a pretty steady diet of fried on a stick fair food. Plus, I’m a real sucker when it comes to hand cut fries. Back to that pig snout sandwich, I just can’t get past that thought, but a lot of people do because it’s a very popular item on the menu - just not with me. The prices and

service help put this place on the must go to list for the hungry faithful! The next pit stop on the tour is a little spot on the road in Denver, Colorado. I’m always looking for a place that’s unique - and by golly I found it this time! Something you wouldn’t think of in the Rocky Mountains; and that would be a seafood/Southern Cajun style place called Bayou Bob’s. This is just an educated guess on my part, but I think after being in business for 30 years, they must be doing something right. I’m a big fan of seafood and Cajun cooking, but I normally go South from the house to find this type of place. What a surprise to find this little landlocked jewel in Colorado with the gulf hundreds of miles away! I truly enjoy some shrimp etouffee, jambalaya, catfish and gumbo. A simple choice for me is the Cajun Combeaux, with sampling of most everything I come here for in one platter. I do have to warn you parking is a premium in this neighborhood so be prepared for that. I also wouldn’t come in and be in a rush as it sometimes can be a tad bit slow on getting things out of the kitchen. But the wait is sure enough worth it! Oh, I would recommend that you call ahead for reservations. The last stop on the world tour takes us South and West from Denver to sunny Phoenix. I’m not the biggest fan of BBQ on the road, but this place just might be the exception. That would be Little Miss BBQ. After several years of competition cooking, the owners decided to settle down and open up their own place - and boy howdy did they! Little Miss BBQ has been called the best BBQ in Phoenix! The style they cook here is more of a Texas style offering. It sorta reminds me of home cooking type meals with a flavor I really appreciate. The sandwiches are a complete meal in itself and the combo platters are also a pleasant surprise. Now there’s no need to come here to be impressed by the ornate and lavish décor. They focus on what you come for and that’s some awesome food to satisfy the largest and pickiest of appetites. Seating inside is somewhat limited. Once again, I think I’ve shared enough of my dining secrets. As always, let’s try to focus on why we do this crazy stock show life. Safe travels till next time. •

special feature

A few years ago I asked a friend a mine that is a farmer if he knew anything about giant pumpkins. I told him I had noticed the giant pumpkins on display at the 2015 Iowa State Fair. I was never really into gardening, but I did enjoy growing pumpkins in my mom's garden growing up. I always thought it would be fun to grow one. He said he had a friend that had some seeds. We then decided to have a contest who could grow the biggest pumpkin that year. My biggest pumpkin I grew that Summer was around 44 pounds. My friend's was 105 pounds. Being the competitive person that I am, I had to beat him the next year. I did a lot of research over the Winter and purchased giant pumpkin seeds from some of the big names across the country. My seeds cost $8, $25, $50 and even $100 for each seed! My family thought I was crazy spending that much, but like show cattle, I figured it was important to have good genetics. I had tried purchasing giant pumpkin seeds from local greenhouses that could grow up to 200 pounds but they never turned out. I started using automatic sprinklers that were on timers to water every morning and evening, as well as used seaweed and other fertilizers to help them grow bigger. My biggest pumpkin in 2017

was 293 pounds! I had over ten pumpkins that were over 100 pounds last year! I was even able to outgrow my local farmer friend! It was a lot of fun but I wanted to grow bigger pumpkins. I continued to research how people grow the biggest pumpkins in the world. The largest pumpkin was grown in Germany and weighed 2,624 pounds. The largest in North America at that time weighed 2,363 pounds. I learned about their genetics and purchased seeds out of those pumpkins, and the pumpkin seeds that grew those pumpkins. They actually have online giant pumpkin seed auctions throughout the Winter where you bid in online sales (similar to online cattle sales)! I purchased a seed that grew the biggest pumpkin in the world for $500! I even purchased a set of seeds that included 1 seed out of the 2,624 pound pumpkin from Germany for $965! It is a lot of fun and seeing how crazy some of the sales get! I spent the early part of 2018 tilling the soil, putting in fencing and getting everything ordered and organized for the coming year. Shortly after Blackout 6 I dug holes that were approximately 5 feet wide and 2 feet deep and installed heating cables to keep the ground warm during

the cool Spring months. On April 11, 2018 I started my seeds inside. I filed the edges of the seeds and soaked them in warm seaweed water before planting them in small pots under grow lights and on top of heating mats. The pumpkins actually came up in 3-5 days! The previous year took anywhere from 11-16 days outside. I kept a close eye on them and watered them inside for almost an entire month! Between April 30th and the first week in May I transplanted my pumpkins outside into the ground. I also used tents to cover them and protect them from cool temperatures and wind. It was a lot of fun growing them in the early months and seeing how fast each plant grows! This year I also built walking boards so that I wouldn't walk on the soil and damage the roots. I had heard it helps them grow better.

My biggest pumpkins this year were 670, 502, 491, 477 pounds! I also grew many 200-350 pound pumpkins that we used as decorations or donated to local restaurants and friends! I am already working on changes for next year and seeing how I can grow them even bigger next year! I hope you enjoy the many photos from the past year! •

THE SHOWTIMES / NOV/DEC 2018

By the end of June my Pumpkins started appearing. I made sure to only grow 1 pumpkin per plant so all of the nutrients went towards 1 pumpkin. Each plant was different, but on some of my plants I probably picked off over 300 pumpkins throughout the Summer! When we left for Maine, Hereford and Limousin Junior Nationals I was away from the pumpkins and hoped my sprinklers would work. It was really cool to see how much they had grown

when we were gone! I could actually see how much they were growing every day. They would start off the size of a marble, then an egg, then a basket ball, and before you knew it they were 100 pounds! I actually placed a plywood board and sand under them this Summer, so I could see the sand crack and move each day as they were growing. Before I knew it, my pumpkin plants that were 15 feet long and covered the entire pig and cattle pens they were grown in! I also covered the pumpkins with blue tarps to help keep them dry and protected from hail and storms. By the end of September, the plants were growing up barn walls, fences and up trees nearby! On September 30th we had some friends come over and help us pick them. We used giant 7' tarps with handles to move them. It took as many as 9 guys to carry them! My big 670 pumpkin we could only move about 3 feet at a time! We then weighed the pumpkins on our portable cattle scale and then loaded our 3 best to display at the American Royal in Kansas City, Missouri!

PUMPKIN PIE BY LAURIE REID, THE SHOWTIMES

INGREDIENTS 1 1/2 c. Canned Pumpkin 3/4 c. Sugar 1/2 tsp. Salt 1 Tbs. Pumpkin Pie Spice (More to taste) 3 Slightly Beaten Eggs 1 1/4 c. Milk 1 6oz. can (2/3 c.) Evaporated Milk 1 9-inch unbaked Crust EASY TO DOUBLE RECIPE!

DIRECTIONS Combine pumpkin, sugar, salt and spices. Blend in eggs, milk and evaporated milk. Pour into pastry shell (when I don’t have time to make a crust from scratch I prefer Marie Callender’s Deep Dish crust - taste homemade!). I put foil around crust. Bake in hot over (400°) for 50 minutes, or until knife inserted halfway between center and edge comes out clean. Cool. Top with whipped cream and enjoy! • NOTES FROM LAURIE I always use homegrown pie pumpkins in my pies! It makes it a special dish for Thanksgiving and the Fall! The old-time ricer (you can use a potato masher) I use was passed down to me from my Grandma. I am excited to be able to share this family tradition with you. •

IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL. BY CORTNEY AND TYLER CATES, IN

THE SHOWTIMES / NOV/DEC 2018

CATES CORTNEY + TYLER

65

C 66

ortney and Tyler Cates came from two very different backgrounds. From the beginning Cates Farms, established by Pauline and Rex Cates, was your everyday Midwest farm raising hogs, cattle, and row crops. It all started as a 4-H project for Brian and Randy many years ago. They showed at their local and state fairs, but later decided that they wanted to have a purebred Shorthorn herd of their own. In the late 70’s Rex Cates and his two sons, Brian and Randy began buying Shorthorn cattle to start their herd. By the early 80’s they had their first production sale and every year since, but one, have kept up the tradition. In the early 90’s Cates Farms began to make a name for itself by producing the famous herd bull, CF Trump. At that same time, the third generation of Cates Farms began to make his mark. Tyler Cates, Brian’s son, returned to the farm after attending college at NEO and Purdue University. Tyler was a member of the livestock judging team and held the position of assistant coach while at Purdue. Tyler has taken the skills he learned from his family and livestock coaches to a new level, he has helped bring the Cates Farms name to the forefront of the Shorthorn breed. Today Cates Farms has exhibited over 20 National Champion or Reserve National Champion Females and more than 15 National Champion or Reserve Champion bulls. Today, the production sale is known as the “Star Search Sale”, which takes place on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend and for the past three years Angus have been successfully included in the sale. In addition, because of

the high demand for CF cattle Cates Farms started a fallborn online sale called, “Modoc Madness”. Additionally, Angus heifers are market through the spring online, “Sunrise Sunset Farm Sale”. Tyler continues to use his livestock judging expertise by judging national shows from coast to coast. The National Western Stock Show, Ft. Worth, North American, American Royal, KILE, Angus Junior Nationals, and Hereford Junior Nationals are just of few that comprise his resume. In 1984, Sunrise Sunset Farm was established by Cortney’s parents Robert Hill and Marlene Dukehart when they bought their first farm together as a mutual tenth wedding anniversary present. Her mother had shown horses and had been a 4-H horse club leader for thirty years, her father, who had grown up a city boy, did not have any livestock background. They encouraged her through the 4-H program to pursue her own interests and it was something new each year. She began with chickens, then hogs, then sheep and finally arrived at cattle at the age of 10. The first few years she led crossbred steers in the ring. The Angus breed was suggested by a friend for its wide array of opportunities and contests available to juniors through the National Junior Angus Association. Although her parents had raised beef cattle on a small scale, Cortney plunged into the world of Angus and competed on the national level with her bred and owned stock, all of which derived from two heifers that were purchased for her in 1997. In 2002 Cortney was crowned Miss American Angus an opportunity that she will never forget. The ability to represent the American Angus Association, American Angus Auxiliary and Certified Angus Beef gave her opportunities to promote the breed that she loved.

When Cortney aged out on the junior level, her involvement continued by participating in open shows and she continued increasing and improving her herd by entering in bull tests and marketing her heifers and steers to juniors both privately and through Angus Breed auctions. It was through the cattle show at KILE, where both Tyler and Cortney were exhibiting, that led to the marriage of them and their respective herds. He asked her to go to dinner and when she asked where, he replied, “your place”. She thought that was a bit too forward and turned him down unaware that the name of the restaurant actually is Your Place. Tyler wasn’t easily discouraged and pursued her from Indiana. The three-year long distance relationship cumulated in a wedding on Oct. 23, 2010 and the merger of the Shorthorn and Angus herds. Although, Tyler’s attention was mainly on the Shorthorn breed at the beginning of their marriage, they bought their first Angus heifer together a year after they married. The blend of the new and original genetics has produced a successful combination of show ring champions.

On July 15, 2014 Cortney and Tyler produced their greatest achievement, their daughter Piper. She travels to all of the shows, usually under the watchful eye of one of her grandparents Marlene, Bob, Angie, or Brian, so that her parents can concentrate on the cattle and their customers. However, she spends many hours at home with mom and dad in the barn, doing chores and checking cattle. Piper never looks at anyone as a stranger, just someone she hasn’t met yet. At this time in her life, she declares that Charolais are her favorite, which will require either an expansion of breeds or a change of mind since juggling two breeds at shows is hard enough, especially when they both show on the same day. The continued success of Cates Farms and Sunrise Sunset Farm is their focus on customer service. The relationship between breeder and buyer doesn’t end when the bull or heifer is loaded on the trailer. “We not only sell cattle, but we also try to build relationships with people and I think that is pretty important in this business,” Cortney adds. Longevity in the cattle industry is one of the toughest aspects of the business, especially when it comes to the showing side. Tyler and Cortney’s biggest dream for their business is for it to continue to grow, to improve, and to be passed on to the next generation, their daughter Piper. Cortney and Tyler came from two different backgrounds East Coast and Midwest, first generation and third generation, Shorthorn and Angus, but one thing brought them together their common interest and love of cattle, as Cortney said, “We are in it for the long haul.” •

THE SHOWTIMES / NOV/DEC 2018

That same year she led the Reserve Champion Angus Bred and Owned Heifer in the ring at the NJAS and the Reserve Champion bull at the Angus Eastern Regional. A livestock judging scholarship to Butler Community College tempted Cortney to leave her Angus herd behind and travel to Kansas. However, she decided teaching was the route for her because Maryland did not offer that many opportunities in the agriculture industry, and enrolled at Towson University. She received her degree and taught U.S. History and Social Studies at her alma mater, Glenelg High School for three years.

FAN 0R FOLLOWER? LET GO OF WORDLY THINGS AND PUT JESUS FIRST. BY BOB AND JENNIFER BRUNS, TX

At this point, things could’ve gone one of two ways, my cousin could’ve been a fan of wanting to win, a fan of the dream of winning, or she could be a follower of the instructions she was given. The book we sent could’ve sat on the coffee table and collected dust, or she could study it and do her best to keep on track. This would involve lots of hard work and dedication with no shortcuts, no slacking off, and no prioritizing all kinds of other things ahead of her steer project. We can be the same way about Christ. We can say we love Jesus, but then follow the ways of the world instead. We can be a fan of the idea of dying and going to heaven, of knowing we are loved by God, and of the principals of the Bible. However, when it comes to choosing God’s ways or the world’s ways, our priorities get all jumbled up. In Matthew 7:21 Jesus says “Not everyone who says to me ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” So, we must ask ourselves, is my Bible just sitting on the coffee table collecting dust, or am I diving into it, studying the message, and trying to be a true follower of Christ?

In Matthew 19:16-22, Jesus teaches about the rich young man who is most definitely a fan of God and is looking to please him. “16 Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?” 17 “Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.” 18 “Which ones?” he inquired. Jesus replied, “‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, 19 honor your father and mother,’ and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’” 20 “All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?” 21 Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 22 When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.” So many times, we are like this rich man. It is so hard to let go of worldly things and put Jesus first. Things can also be more than physical things, it can also be our time. God wants us more than just on Sunday morning, or for a few minutes first thing in the morning when we read a devotional or a few Bible verses. God wants us to be filled with the Holy Spirit all day every day. We should show it in all that we do. Fortunately, my cousin did exactly what she was told to do. She worked extremely hard and ended up being Reserve Grand Champion. She stayed focus on the project, made it her top priority and reaped the reward from it. My prayer is that we can all take this same approach in following Christ by asking Him to come into our hearts, asking Him to forgive us of our sins, and learning to follow His instructions and live a full life that brings honor and glory to Him. •

THE SHOWTIMES / NOV/DEC 2018

ast year, one of my cousins from California called and wanted to up her game in the show ring. She had shown a home raised steer the year before and knew she liked it, but wanted to be more competitive. Her parents didn’t really know much about it and her mom got talked into being the beef leader because they didn’t have anyone else that was willing. I told her we’d sure be happy to help her. We found her a steer, but that was only step one. Our good friend Jon Gevelinger had just published his book “Before the Banner” so we ordered a copy to send to her because it’s hard to help from so far away. No matter how hard we try, its impossible to try to give all the instructions over the phone.

ROYAL CHAMPION

JULIA’S STEER WINS THE 2018 AMERICAN ROYAL!

This years show season started with the Jordan Jack Memorial in South Dakota, and coming in reserve. The Sneak-A-Peak Preview in Nebraska was the next jackpot we traveled to. In one ring he got reserve and in the other he got 3rd overall. Next was the National Western Stock Show and received reserve overall. At the Sioux Empire Farm Show Jackpot in South Dakota, Whitey took home a grand champion overall. At the Blackout Jackpot in Colorado, he received grand champion overall. At the Green and Gold Show in Colorado he placed 5th overall. At the Oklahoma Beef Expo in Oklahoma, he placed grand champion overall. At the Northern Exposure Jackpot in South Dakota, he placed grand champion overall. At his last show of the season we achieved our goal at the Kansas City American Royal, and received grand champion overall.

I would like to take a moment to recognize all the people that have helped me get to where I am at today. My parents have been my biggest supporters since day one, and I don’t know what I would do without them. Dalton Chambers and Lance Gilbert have been like my two older brothers. Whenever I need them, they’re always there to support me. The Goretska Show Cattle team has been a huge help to me by teaching me different showing techniques. The Leclair Show Cattle team has also been a huge help to me by showing me how to fit, clip, and learn new showing techniques to make me a better showman. Winning the American Royal was a dream come true. The moment that the judge walked around and gave my steer the grand slam was one of the happiest moments in my life, and it is a moment I will never forget. I was not prepared to win, be interviewed, have pictures taken of me, or be recognized the way I was. By the end of the show I was overwhelmed and I wasn’t sure whether I should laugh or cry. The sale left me utterly speechless. Not only did my dad win this show twenty years ago, I set a new sale record with my champion steer. Receiving $250,000 puts a lot of pressure on a young adult that I was not prepared to endure. I am eternally grateful and blessed to have had the most successful and memorable year yet. I look forward to 2019. •

e’ll over on your steer side, once again another extremely high quality class of cattle. My hat’s off to these exhibitors that come in here. Six, or seven, maybe even eight deep cattle that I think if were in a different class would end up being in your top pair, if not possibly your class winner. I am going to tell you though, there’s two at the top end of this class that are absolutely incredible cattle. For me, the young ladies steer I lead off with, does so rather handily in my eyes. I am here to tell you guys this one’s an absolute stallion in my eyes. Beginning at the surface, he’s the truest and most honest in terms of his structure. The way he gets off his shoulder, the use of his front knee, his hip, his hind leg, his rear pastern is absolutely on point. He oozes quality from every single pore. So deep, so fresh and attractive. The way he sets hes neck onto the apex of his shoulder. Fresh, youthful and juvenile as you study him down through his chest. Round and robust in terms of his rib cage and design, and yet you get your hands on him and he handles like a true man. So expressive, so wide, and square and true over his rib into his loin. He gets progressively wider and squarer into his pin set. And then the young lady asks this one to lead, you talk about one that’s as mobile and athletic as any I’ve ever seen. What an outstanding creature to win this particular class. •

what would happen next. When I went in for division I became more confident and showed my steer the best I could. When the judge came over and gave me Division Champion I was shocked. In my head, I thought okay I am in the final drive... don’t get too excited, because I might not win. Everybody that helped me that day were also nervous to see what would happen. Then the time came and it was the final drive. The judge picked the Grand Champion and next was Reserve. Then he picked my steer as Reserve and I was motionless. I could not believe that I had won Reserve Champion at KILE. It meant the world to me that I was able to share this experience with my dad and my siblings. I enjoyed my time at KILE and I cannot wait to go back.. •

inning Reserve Champion at KILE was one of the best feelings in the world. It was my first time ever showing at KILE and being able to say that I won Reserve is something I am proud to say. I was so nervous to show because it was a much bigger show then what I am use to. When I was about to go in the ring and show, my dad gave me a little advice to keep calm and focus on my steer, the judge and myself. He told me that no matter what, he was proud of how far I have come with my steer. When I was in the ring for my class and the judge picked me for first, I was excited because I got to go in for division. It made me more nervous, but I was ready to go back in and see

A BUSINESS BUILT ON VALUES, VISION AND AGRICULTURAL COMMUNITY VITALITY ARTICLE BY NICOLE LANE ERCEG // PHOTOS BY SARA RADER

Click. Pack. Ship. A simple process, a great story. The latest stock show brand that has people swooning, laughing and now expressing their stock show pride began as a simple idea — how do we keep more kids involved in Agriculture? The answer: show them the variety of career opportunities beyond the pasture fences. When shoppers scroll the Hereford Prep website, add to their shopping carts and order, there’s a flurry of young hands that jump to action.

What began as a 4-H project, quickly blossomed. A group of young ladies ranging in age from 9-17 years old, these business managers work as a team to develop products, run accounting, advertise, market their products and deliver them to customers. Together, they are proving that successful businesses aren’t always what you might expect. These youth show age should never be a barrier to doing something you believe in and love. A clothing boutique isn’t what often comes to mind when someone says the phrase ‘4-H project’ or ‘career in agriculture’. Yet, that’s exactly what Hereford Prep is. It’s hands-on learning where the lessons come in the form of real-life business decisions. It’s the same principles that the show ring teaches, but instead of cattle handling these girls learn how to manage a balance sheet and run a cash register. One of the adult advisers, Dee Braman of Victoria, Texas, says this type of ‘learn by doing,’ activity can help kids discover passions and potential careers. “I want to help kids understand that you don’t have to be

The National FFA organization and 4-H have been applying this concept for decades — but what about a different kind of business owner? What do fashion and Ag have in common? Where is the modern entrepreneurial training? It’s behind the scenes at Hereford Prep. Whether it’s through photography, social media, graphic design, fashion or the written word Braman knows there’s more to agriculture careers than cows, sows and plows and along with other parents is working to provide an environment that’s dual purpose; it serves the industry and teaches valuable career-building skills. The key to success is centralized on playing to each individual’s strengths and helping them fulfill a variety of roles within the business, Braman says. It’s also hinged on their diversity of ages and backgrounds. Some of the girls are busy showmen, others are only connected to the show ring through Hereford Prep. It means that if a Hereford Prep booth is open at a show, the girls who don’t have animals in the ring run the store and when the others hang up their show sticks, they wrap up the evenings with cash outs and restocking inventory. “The blend of backgrounds and unique business model demonstrates to the farm girls that livestock aren’t required to serve the industry you were raised in and even if you’ve never led an animal into the ring or fed a bottle calf, you’re welcome in our industry too,” Braman says. REAL LIFE MISTAKES & LESSONS No business owner is perfect, particularly not those with limited experience. The young entrepreneurs have had challenges ranging from ruined product to shipping mishaps. Each is handled in stride. The team brainstorms solutions as a group, drafts a plan to respond and leans on the advisers for support in overcoming challenges. It’s the personal touch provided in each order that allows them to grow. Each Hereford Prep order is shipped with a handwritten thank you note and packaged with care. When they accidentally oversold on an item and had to put it on backorder, personal phone calls were made to each

THE SHOWTIMES / NOV/DEC 2018

While other children use their weekends for leisure, this group of young professionals gather together to run a business. They fill orders, print packing labels and package stock show style items to be sent around the country. Between a flurry of giggles and conversation, they work — tracking inventory and handling customer problems.

a cowboy to be in Ag,” Dee says. “These girls are learning that they can still be involved in the community they love, but that doesn’t mean they have to earn an income solely from the farm or come from a family that owns 100,000 acres.”

163

customer who would have to wait weeks to receive their order. Pop-Up shops at shows the face-to-face interaction with customers allow the team to gather feedback and come up with new product ideas. Originally launched as an online business, marketing was the first hard lesson to learn. When the website officially launched the girls waited for the first order to come in. Each took turns checking for the email that would announce their first customer. For weeks, nothing happened. “It was a great lesson in marketing,” Dee says. “They had to learn that in business ‘if you build it, they will come,’ philosophy just isn’t going to work. You have to tell people about your business and get the word out.” MORE THAN HEREFORD Slowly, through dedicated social media posting, sharing and brick and mortar shops at events like Hereford Junior Nationals, Hereford Prep grew a following. Quickly, items went from fully stocked to sold out. People outside the Hereford breed began asking for designs too. 164

From the beginning, a spirit of inclusion, comradery and teamwork has been the glue piecing this business together. So when people began asking for designs with breeds other than Hereford, the girls knew they had to say yes. “They decided you shouldn’t have to own a Hereford to support Hereford Prep,” Braman says. Debuting just in time for Christmas Hereford Prep will launch stylish products featuring a few other breeds. It’s the modern day ‘help your neighbor’ rural value displayed in a whole different arena. GIVING BACK Current business profits go to support youth in agriculture, especially those involved in the Hereford breed. All items sold through Hereford Prep support the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA).

The fun apparel and lifestyle products all help fund youth scholarships and leadership events — all helping keep kids in agriculture. “It might just seem like a $20 t-shirt, but with that shirt purchase is supporting so many youth,” Braman explains. “It’s more than the girls running the business logistics, the proceeds go to provide support to HYFA.” Other business revenue is reinvested to help develop new products, grow inventory and invest in marketing. None of the girls working in the business draw a check, it’s all done on a volunteer basis. “I’m so proud,” Braman says. “I wish everyone could see the personal growth up close in these girls throughout the past year. As the business has grown, so have they and people have been so kind to them.” Hereford Prep is organization that is open to all. Braman says other youth who would like to get involved are welcome to help in any capacity and it’s not limited to young women. “They have worked so hard and this is why I’m so passionate about keeping kids in ag,” Braman says. “These ladies have proven they are the type of kids you want to build a future around.” Hereford Prep has lots of new products on the horizon. Planning for 2019 items is well underway and Christmas designs will launch on Black Friday along with extended breed items. “Make sure to visit herefordprep.com and get your Christmas orders in quickly after Thanksgiving,” Braman advises. “The girls are so excited about these new products and we have a feeling they’ll sell out quick!” From an idea to a thriving business, it’s all built on the best traditions of agricultural life. Fingerprints of rural values can be found throughout Hereford Prep’s business model. From handwritten thank you notes and giving away hardearned dollars to helping cattle people express what they love most, it’s a proven model of modern entrepreneurship with the perfect foundation of farm kid ethics. By building the same character traits that create champions in the show ring, Hereford Prep is time inspiring kids that careers in agriculture, aren’t just on the farm. One thing is for sure — the future of stock show style is bright. •

cyclONE NATION CREATING A CULTURE OF SUCCESS.

NOV/DEC 2018 / THE SHOWTIMES

BY THE 2018 IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY LIVESTOCK JUDGING TEAM

174

ne of the key priorities at Iowa State University is educating students and preparing them to make a difference in the world. Established in 1858, the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences at Iowa State University provides students a broad-based education that encompasses biological, physical, and social sciences; humanities; and technical subject manner. Over 25 majors are available within the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, allowing students the opportunity to specialize in agricultural production, communication, microbiology, human health, and many more! The variety of coursework available and opportunities for experiences outside of the classroom affords graduating students diverse career opportunities, including: agribusiness/industry, production agriculture, biological and environmental sciences, natural resource management, rural development, public agencies, education, animal and human health professions, ag policy, and graduate studies. The Iowa State University Intercollegiate Livestock Judging Team is one of the institution’s student development programs that focuses on providing experiential learning within the world of livestock production. It encompasses students from varying departments within the College of Agriculture Sciences; ranging from Animal Science and Engineers to Ag Business and Education majors. Iowa State boasts one of the richest traditions of livestock judging teams, as the University team has won 20 National Championships, more than any other institution in the country. Perhaps more importantly, Iowa State University former judging members have more ties to former Saddle and Sirloin Club Portrait Collection members than any other university in the U.S.! This success can be attributed to the influential minds that have served as coaches in

previous decades, including: Dr. H.H. Kildee, Dr. Chris Skaggs, Dr. Dave Duello, Dr. Scott Greiner, Dr. Mark Hoge, and many more. These coaches have not only established a foundation of excellence for our program’s history, but have also made a significant impact on the livestock industry as a whole. If you look closely at the judges lists of some of your upcoming exhibitions, many young people have the privilege of showing their projects under them at this year’s majors! The current coach, Dr. Chris Cassady came on board at Iowa State in the fall of 2016 after serving as a graduate research assistant and livestock judging coach at the University of Illinois. Dr. Cassady has coached a National Champion Meat Animal Evaluation Team as well as nationally competitive livestock judging teams at all levels ranging from 4-H members to seniors in college. He is assisted by graduate students Colby Redifer and Will Taylor. The 2018 ISU Livestock Judging Team was the first recruiting class for the newly appointed coaches. The 13 members of this team consist of 7 transfer students and 6 in-house students. Members hail from 5 different states ranging from Iowa to Delaware. The year started with top 5 finishes at the National Western and Sioux Falls and high team honors at the Iowa Beef Expo. Wrapping up the spring semester was a top 5 finish at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. With the goal of a national title in November, the ISU livestock judging team came storming out of the gates in the fall semester. The Cyclones have been Reserve Champion team at the National Barrow Show, Aksarben, and Flint Hills contests with high individuals at two of the four fall competitions! Even though the National Competition has not occurred for 2018, Iowa State University already boasts one of the most competitive track records for the year.

The ISU judging mission is to develop students to be leaders, educators, and advocates for the industry outside of the judging van or reasons room. Livestock judging team members are responsible for many other educational activities throughout the year. Team members host an annual judging camp in the summer for students ages 14-18; and provide oneon-one interaction with camp attendees on selection and reasons. Team members also have multiple opportunities to serve as committee members at county and state livestock judging contests as well as undergraduate teaching assistants for evaluation courses offered on campus.

Our goal at Iowa State is to create a culture of success. Our idea of success isn’t defined by wins and losses; but by what young men and women can accomplish in their careers and communities long after graduation. Our vision is to recruit the best students, give them a first-class production agricultural experience, build their network of peers through traveling and exposure to different systems, and develop a solid work ethic and interpersonal skills. Iowa State has state of the art facilities, award winning professors, and incredibly strong support from our alumni. For more information about Iowa State Livestock Judging please contact Dr. Chris Cassady. A PATRIARCH OF THE LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY. t is no secret that people from all over the country travel to Louisville each year for their time on the green chips. While we all appreciate the show and industry in the present, it is important to recognize the people behind the events, genetics and traditions we all cherish. Jack Ragsdale is a patriarch of the livestock industry. Last year in the busy main aisle at the North American International Livestock Expo, we had the privilege of being able to sit down with Jack and learn his story. Now, at the age of 92, he continues to share and inspire us with his experiences and impact on the industry as we know it.

Born with a love of animals, Jack spent his Summers at his Uncle and Aunt’s farm outside of Franklin, Indiana starting at the age of nine in 1935. There were no modern conveniences and church was a big deal. His family had three teams of work horses, they worked slow and it wasn’t always easy; but according to Jack, “…it was great.” Jack was excited when he was finally old enough to stay overnight at the local county fair where they slept in the loft over the hog pens. From the practical jokes he and his friends played on each other to the overall experience, it was always a highlight of the year. Jack’s love for the industry was rooted as a young boy and continued to grow on into college and the rest of his life.

hall of fame

The ribbon and medal Jack is holding is high individual livestock judging contest. 1948 Chicago International. Jack scored a 956 with an average of 48.6 on his reasons. He didn't take any notes, just used the placings for the 8 reasons classes. His team placed second.

His time as a judge, however, did not end with college. Jack Ragsdale has judged shows from California to New York, as well as Internationally. His biggest honor was judging the World Shorthorn Show in Argentina where they had to use an interpreter for reasons. The Shorthorn breed has always been a passion for Jack. Having served as a past President of the American Shorthorn Association, he has worked for or with many premier Shorthorn breeders. Jack has been influential in bringing genetics into the United States. An example

of such genetics is the bull Captivator of Bapton, who he imported over to the US from Scotland in 1963/1964. Jack was one of the men highly instrumental in the foundation of the show beloved for its green chips, the North American International Livestock Exposition. With the Chicago Stockyards gone in the fire, it left a void in the industry for another major Stock Show. The NAILE was given $50,000 from the State of Kentucky to host the first show in Louisville, Kentucky. There were five breeds of cattle included in the inaugural North American – Angus, Polled Herefords, Horned Herefords, Charolais and Shorthorn. Over the years, sheep, hogs, quarter horses and dairy were implemented into the show. The NAILE has host exhibitors from 48 states and Canada. In addition to serving as the Beef Cattle Chair, Jack was the Chairmen of the Board for the NAILE Executive Committee. His background and passion for the industry has helped mold the show to what it is today. Jack Ragsdale’s impact on the industry was evident as our meeting with him in Louisville was interrupted kindly numerous times by fellow members of the livestock industry – just to say hello and give a kind word or share a memory. When asked about his life, he raves about his wife of 70 years, Ruthanne, his family and says, “it’s been a lot of fun.” •

THE SHOWTIMES / NOV/DEC 2018

He attended Franklin College, but only got a semester in before he was called to serve our Country at the age of 18. After his time in the service, Jack returned to school and continued his college career at Purdue. He was an active member of his Collegiate Livestock Judging Team where he was highly successful. In 1948, Ragsdale was named High Individual at the Chicago Stock Show Livestock Judging Competition. Not only did they have to evaluate cattle, hogs and lambs, draft horses were also a part of the 12 classes and 8 sets of reasons. Jack, to this day, remembers every last detail from his big win in Chicago. He explained how he averaged a 48.6 on reasons (including a couple 50s) and had the highest score of all-time. A record of which stood for several years after. For Jack, it was a true honor years later when he was asked to officiate the same contest that he won years prior alongside J.C. McLean and Walter Lewis.

THE BEST OF THE BEST This year, we are recognizing six individuals that have risen to the top. Showing livestock at a competitive level is never easy. It takes hard work, knowledge, dedication and sometimes even a little luck to be successful. This year we are honoring Sara Sullivan, Whitney Walker, Julia Frye, Ashtin Guyer, Aaron Kerlee and Mikala Grady! There were so many exhibitors across the country that won multiple shows, that narrowing it down to our top six was difficult. It just shows what an amazing year these six exhibitors had! Not only did they win, they won big. They each dominated the 2017-2018 show season. Congratulations on being The Showtimes’ Exhibitors of the Year and good luck at the remaining shows of 2018!

OUR BEST YEAR YET!

NOV/DEC 2018 / THE SHOWTIMES

2018 was bigger and better in every way. From covering more shows and traveling more places, to printing the biggest livestock show publication of all time and holding the most electrifying show of the year, 2018 was one to remember!

216

We kicked off the year in Denver. We brought you the best coverage with show photos, live videos and updates throughout the event. From there, we headed to the Western Bonanza in California! It is always great visiting with exhibitors and covering the West Coast. This past March we held the Blackout Jackpot 6 in Loveland, CO! It was our biggest show to date and actually filled both barns! Every year we try to add something more to the Blackout. This year we built a metal truss mountain in the ring that had moving lights and smoke! In addition to many great prizes, we also awarded 7 scholarships to exhibitors at the show. It was a great time with family and friends! Summer kicked off with a trip to Maine-Anjou and Hereford Junior Nationals in Grand Island, NE where we were the official media partner of both shows! There was nothing quite like seeing

a fireworks show over Hereford tie-outs! From there we headed to Denver to cover Limousin Junior Nationals. We wrapped up July in the office working on our State Fair Edition. In 2017 we printed the biggest livestock show publication of all time. In 2018 we topped it at 674 pages. We traveled to many state fairs including Illinois, Iowa and Colorado promoting our new issue and covering shows with live videos and photos! Our free Showtimes App’s Pasture Sale feature continues to grow each year! It is great to see so many people use it! In October we headed East to cover the KILE in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania! Not only were the people and show management great, it was probably our favorite show of 2018! It was also nice to see Washington D.C., New York City and the surrounding areas! We were excited to be one of the Livestock Lead Sponsors of the 2018 American Royal in Kansas City! Again this year we setup our big booth that included many new store items and 3 giant pumpkins! As we wrap up this issue we are planning to head to Louisville for the NAILE! Thanks to everyone for a great year!

IN ADDITION TO THE UNITED STATES, THE SHOWTIMES HAS SPONSORED SHOWS IN CANADA AND AUSTRALIA!

s we put the finishing touches on this Year End Edition of The Showtimes, we are smack dab in the middle of the American Royal and already gearing up for the NAILE in Louisville. While we are on the verge of exhaustion, what keeps our gears turning, is you. You Are Showtimes. Being able to highlight the shows, the exhibitors and the producers is a true blessing. We always want to produce a publication that covers the industry better than ever before. This mindset is what led to our newest slogan, “Black is the New Purple.” There is so much that goes into a Champion. A top notch breeding program, feeding them right, fitting them to a tee, showing them, etc. Our black Showtimes congratulates banners recognize it all. From a small jackpot to a national show, the hours spent gearing one to backdrop deserves acknowledgment.

Rolling into Louisville, we are looking forward to working closely with Linde’s Livestock Photos. All of our photos from the show will be available to purchase on her website. There’s nothing quite like those green chips. While this year comes to a close and we prepare for 2019 [WOW], we are already looking forward to shows, sales and events such as the Western Elite, Fort Worth Stock Show and, of course, the Blackout Jackpot 7! If you haven’t done so already, make plans to come to Loveland, CO March 22-24th for the most electrifying show of the year! Good luck to everyone this show season! Be sure to send us your Showtimes banner photos so we can feature you in the magazine! Until January, we hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving, a Merry Christmas and an unbelievable New Year! •

New Ad Design Policy When The Showtimes designs your ad, we will now email it to you to forward on to any other publications. You will then have both the proof to post online as well as the high resolution file to print flyers or send to another magazine. To have us design your next ad, please email theshowtimes@yahoo.com!

THANK YOU! We would like to thank everyone who helps distribute and promote The Showtimes Magazine to shows, sales and events across the country!
