THE BEST LIFE
THE INFLUENCE THE SHOW INDUSTRY HAS ON OUR LIVES.
A
single moment can define your life. This past state fair season, a judge mentioned how there is more to life than a cattle show. He was absolutely correct, but at the same token, he was completely wrong. It goes without saying that faith, family and friends should hold precedence in one’s life and ultimately be tied to every decision and action you make. It is also true that showing cattle and being a part of the livestock industry has defined my family - and we are not alone.
VOTED BEST LIVESTOCK SHOW PUBLICATION BEST OF THE BARNS
When I was younger and focusing all of my attention on my show cattle and hogs, a friend told me that one day I would have to quit my hobby and join the real world outside of the show ring. That hobby ultimately turned into my career. This Fall Edition marks the 44th issue of The Showtimes. With every issue of The Showtimes we strive to put a product together that is the best tool available to advertisers promoting their cattle, products or service as well as capture the lives and emotions of the people that are the livestock industry. With that being said, I am excited for everyone to read through this issue of the magazine.
From advertisements and champion exhibitor bios to exclusive articles and show coverage, it truly grasps the essence of The Showtimes. It does not matter what you do. I have friends that are cattle producers, pharmacists, stock brokers and teachers. While not all of them see a barn or pasture on a daily basis, their roots in agriculture have unquestionably led them to the successful and rewarding lives that they are enjoying today. There is no better life than that that we are living. Tom Brady can have four Super Bowl rings and Taylor Swift can have more Twitter followers than the Hereford Association has show entries; but they do not have all of the opportunities available to them that people involved with the livestock industry do. I would never call showing and raising livestock a hobby or of unimportance, because you never know what one moment - a champion slap, being left standing, a conversation, or maybe feeling the exhaustion of many early mornings and late nights - will influence someone to become. God Bless, Lisa Reid Owner/Editor

under cover It seems that our lives become a series of annual events. Especially in the show cattle world. We look
forward to the North American, Denver Stock Show, Fort Worth our state fairs, expos and respective Junior Nationals. On our local radio and TV stations every year a little ditty comes on with a corny guy singing “It’s that time of season, it’s that time of year the Allen County Fair is here. Fall is in the air and with it comes all the excitement of “It’s that time of season, it’s that time of year. Our annual Harvest of Excellence is here. This year marks number 19 for us. We are so proud of this years offering of Chianina and Maine influenced calves as well as a few Herefords, Angus and a surprise or two along the way.

As exhibitors fit their calves in preparation for the much anticipated 2015 Iowa State Fair Market Steer Show, The Showtimes sat down with State Fair Ambassador Don Greiman in the cozy beef superintendent’s office located on the northeast side of the Cattle Barn. Nearing 89-years-old, Greiman has led a life actively tied to the cattle industry. From serving on the Iowa State Fair Board for 44 years to being highly involved with the Angus Breed as both a producer and as a voting delegate (where he hasn’t missed a meeting in 59 years), it appears that everything he is associated with encompasses cattle and has the reputation for excellence. Greiman’s rich history in the cattle arena dates back a few generations to when his grandfather laid the foundation to where the Greiman family is today. As Don began to tell us his story on that uncharacteristically chilly Iowa Summer day, we were all hanging on to his every word in interest, captivation, and ultimately respect. Wanting to escape the religious persecution in Germany, the Greiman family made their way to the United States when Don’s grandfather was 9-months-old. Having to cross the Atlantic Ocean on a three-and-ahalf to four-month journey by sail boat, Don’s grandfather was the only child under two-years-old to survive the trip. Landing in New Orleans, the family sailed up the Mississippi River to East Central Iowa where his grandfather and four brothers decided to settle. After making root in Garner, Iowa, Don’s grandfather grew up to marry another German immigrant and raise a farm family consisting of 14 children – 10 boys and 4 girls (Addis, Don’s father was the 13th born). All of which grew up to maturity. The Greiman name has always been
tied to agriculture. While Don’s grandfather’s farm was comprised of predominately high quality Percheron horses and Shorthorn cattle. At the time, the Shorthorns were a big, rough looking breed that are not what we are used to seeing today. When it came time to sell the cattle, his grandfather would ship the calves by train to the huge Union Stockyards in Chicago. On a particular shipment of carload of his Shorthorn fat cattle to the Chicago market in 1893, his grandfather saw a poster advertising the sale of purebred yearling Angus bull calves was being held on the shores of Lake Michigan. His grandfather was excited to have his first opportunity to see this new breed of cattle, and took a trolley across town from the
Union Stockyards to the Columbian Exposition grounds. He fell in love with the first sight! Don’s grandfather immediately observed that these Angus appeared earlier maturing and smoother finishing, which would mean less time on feed and a more desirable carcass. He quickly decided that he could take the money from the sale of his fat cattle and purchase on of these Angus bull calves. He selected what he thought were three best bull calves to be sold, but when the bidding began, the opening bids were more than he received for all his carload of cattle on the fat market. He returned home quire dejected, but he never gave up.
buyers in Chicago said they would never have trouble selling their calves at a premium price if they brought that same quality! At that revelation, Don’s grandfather proclaimed, “We ain’t gonna do nothing but Angus.” And that is just what they did. While Don’s grandfather had Purebred Angus, it was not until his father, Addis, began to work with his cattle that they began to register the cattle.
Little did they know that that one calf would develop nicely into a bull that they used on their Shorthorn cows. While other producers were getting $4.00/100 for their cattle, the calves that the Greiman’s had crossed with that Angus bull were selling for $7.00/100 – nearly double! The
Don began college at Iowa State University in 1947. He then had to defer his enrollment, having to return home to Garner to help his father who had got ulcers in World War II. He returned to school and graduated in 1952. While at ISU, he was a member of the livestock and meats judging team. In fact, he was a member of the 1951 National Champion Meats

day came to pick up the bull, Don’s grandfather and six of his sons went to the train station. When the door opened, you can image the shock on their faces when a four-month-old hairy Angus bull calf was there to greet them. Many friends and people that knew them joked about how the Greiman’s got “snookered” having sent a top end Percheron stallion for a little calf.

Don’s eyes sparkled as he led into the introduction of Angus cattle into their family’s operation. A while after the sale in Chicago, his grandfather saw a note at the local elevator advertising a man wanting to trade an Angus bull in return for a Percheron stallion. Having quality Percheron horses of their own, Don’s grandfather lined up to make the trade of one of his top Percheron stallions in return for the bull. It was his opportunity to get his feet wet in the breed that he so desperately wanted. At that time, letters where the main source for communication rather than telephones. After some correspondence, they had agreed to ship each other their respected animal via train – sight unseen. When the
When Don’s father, uncles and aunts turned 21, they each received 160 acres of land right there in Garner, Iowa from their parents. Now with land of his own and the love for Angus in his blood, Addis acted upon his want to raise registered Angus cattle. At the time, Fred Hanhe, the Editor for the Angus Journal was a mentor of Don’s father and advocated how the Angus breed was comprised of “good individuals and good genetics. It’s like a building, you need a good foundation.” From that point forward, the Greiman family has never slowed down with the Angus breed. While his father exhibited at district fairs to promote their Angus which were still a fairly new breed - he himself began showing at the county level at the age of 10. While they lived very close to the Minnesota border, they would show at the Minnesota State Fair where there were not many Angus breeders as a way to advertise their genetics. Addis had a keen eye when it came to cattle; a trait that has been passed down for many generations.

Judging Team. It was his roll as a livestock evaluator that ultimately led to his position on the Iowa State Fair Board.
It is easy to see as either an exhibitor or simple attendee of the Iowa State Fair, that the fair as a whole is ran right. Much of this overall success is due in part to the continuity of the Iowa State Fair Board. Just as Don’s roots go back to that of the livestock industry and producing purebred livestock, the board as a whole is constructed of individuals that live the life they are representing at the State Fair. Just as a good foundation is required for a good Angus program, a good foundation is required for a top notch State Fair.
In 1965, Don was attending the American Royal Livestock Show. While watching the Purebred Angus Show, the Secretary-Manager of the Iowa State Fair Board approached him, and told him that he needed his help because the Iowa State Fair Board did not have anyone on the Board involved with the production of any species of purebred livestock. Don was appalled to think that Iowa raised so much livestock and that it was such an important part of the Fair, and not to have the purebred industry more involved on the Iowa State Fair Board. One of the interesting aspects of the Iowa State Fair is that it is the only State Agency that has its Board not be politically appointed, but elected by popularity in each of the state’s six districts. Before he knew it, Don held the position and was well on his way to 44 years of service. He has the record of being the longest tender of being a Board member, and one of two to ever be President of the Board two different times. After retiring from the Board, he was appointed an Ambassador. He has the distinction of not missing a day at the Iowa State
To say that Don’s involvement in agriculture is extensive and that he fits well into a leadership roll would be an understatement. Throughout his life he has made a notable difference by serving on multiple boards - including the American Angus Association Board of Directors (which he sat on during the initiation of the Certified Angus Beef program), the Iowa Beef Breeds Council, the Iowa Farmers Grain Dealers Board, the Hancock County Beef Producers Association, the North Central Iowa Angus Association, and the Iowa State University Alumni Association. Last year, he was honored to receive an award by the American Angus Association at their annual meeting for the Greiman Family’s contribution to the advancement and improvement of the Angus Breed. Another prestigious recognition Don has received for his involvement with the Iowa State Fair came in 2009 when he was presented with the Heritage Award by the International Association of Fairs and Expositions; which is their highest honor. The list of organizations taking note to Don’s influential life in agriculture does
not end there. He has been given the Iowa 4-H Alumni Award and was inducted into both the Iowa 4-H and the Association of Iowa Fairs’ Hall of Fames. Don’s active lifestyle expands past the livestock industry to his community as well, where he takes an active role with his church and the local Rotary Club. He is a strong supporter of Iowa State athletics where he has been an ISU season ticket holder for both football and basketball for 55-years – and he rarely misses a game. In fact, his license plate reads “True Fan.” Don Greiman is more than a State Fair Ambassador, past State Fair Board Member, or Angus Producer. He is a man that has taken his family’s base and love for agriculture and the Angus breed and built off of it to help grow the next generations of agricultural enthusiast. Don and his wife Yvonne have passed the responsibility of the operation of the over a century old Purebred Angus Herd and the farm operation to their son Ted, and daughter-inlaw, Mary. With the success they have already accomplished by taking the Angus herd to the next level. Grandsons, Cole and Kyle Greiman, 5th generation producers, have both shown the Grand Champion Bred and Owned Angus Female at the National Junior Angus Show in 2010 and 2011. It will be fun to see what marks the Greiman family makes next on the livestock industry. As Don prepared to take Laurie on a behind-the-scenes tour of the Iowa State Fair – which had just been voted as the top state fair in the country by our readers for the second time and the rest of us geared up to cover the steer show, we were left with the words of Tim Hindel, the beef superintendent whose office we had been meeting in, “Don Greiman is the Iowa State Fair.” ▪

BLAKE 2015 Battle of the Cattle in Belton, TX when I judged with my brother Jake. 3. The person or decision that made the biggest impact on my life was... BLAKE marrying my wife Wravenna. Wravenna as I think back, the decision to attend Black Hawk East College shaped many of my later life events. It was there I gained some of my best friends, was taught by some of the best in how to evaluate livestock, and met the man I would later marry. Most of my biggest life successes (my career choices, continued education, and my children) all resulted from that initial decision to attend BHE. 4. THE FAMILY
BY THE WILLIAMS FAMILY, VA
Charlie “Herk Williams grew up on the 808-acre Pioneer Farms in historic Fairfield, Virginia, located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, raising commercial cattle, purebred Suffolk sheep, corn, hay and small grains. He was always eager to be outside riding tractors, and helping with the livestock. When he began the seventh grade in 1972, he started a market steer and lamb project for the local 4H. Every year after that, he worked with steer projects and was fairly successful. His lamb projects were highly competitive and often won. During high school the family went into the dairy business and it is still being run today by his brother John. In 1987 Charlie married Meredith Woundy at a ceremony on the farm. After 17 years they decided to change their role in agriculture and Charlie stopped working at the dairy. He loved working in the dairy business
but he decided that his main interest was in the beef industry. He purchased 21 registered Angus cattle from various production sales and producers. Slowly the herd grew to over 95 head. In 2005 they bought a registered Hereford heifer and their daughter Olivia showed her at the First Virginia Club Calf Producers Show in January 2006. Slowly, Charlie sold the Angus and started a purebred Hereford cow herd. They began reaching out to Hereford producers on the east coast to find good show heifers and quality cows. After a few successful show heifer finds, they decided to branch out their search. In 2009 they found a heifer from Michigan that was extremely successful at the larger shows. The next year they decided to go back to the same sale and found another heifer that was of very high quality. She was shipped to Ohio for them to pick up at another production sale. At that sale they

Over the years Olivia (now sixteen years old) has become very involved with the National Junior Hereford Association. The Williams family has attended 6 Junior Nationals that has allowed them to travel across the nation and meet many new people. Seeing so much of the country while spending quality family time has been a wonderful tradition. In 2014 Charlie and Olivia were very involved in helping to put on the National Junior Hereford Expo in held for the first time at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The show offered them a huge opportunity to get to know many people that are instrumental in making all the Junior Hereford events possible. Olivia has also attended PRIDE through the NJHA for the last two summers. PRIDE is a leadership conference for youth interested in furthering their professional goals. Olivia is the current President of the Virginia Junior Hereford Association and enjoys bringing new youth into the world of Herefords and teaching them how to fit and show. Another interest filling Olivia’s time is livestock judging, which she has been competitive in since the age of nine through the Rockbridge 4-H Stockman’s Club. This coming January her team has earned the right to travel to Denver for the national judging contest at the National Western Stock Show.
THE FARM
The Williams family farm has a long line of history dating back to 1762. John Mackey, Olivia’s seventh great grandfather, purchased the farm in 1762. The Stone house that the Williams family lives in was built in 1796 and is on the National Historic Register. The Williams house is a three-bay, two-story house built of irregularly coursed limestone rubble. A date stone near the top of the west wall, inscribed “W M/ 1796,” indicated the construction date. The house was built for the marriage of William Mackey and his bride Elizabeth and has been in the family continuously since then. William and Elizabeth had 13 children, which made a tight fit in a four room farm house. Williams mother Mary helped keep the farm going with a whiskey distillery that was left to her by her second husband, Joseph Little. In the late 1800’s the farm was left to Charlie Mackey who had no children. When his wife Cornelia died he asked his cousin Inez Mackey to come and keep house for him. When Charlie Mackey passed away, he left the farm to Inez. Inez married Dewitt Talmadge Williams and Inez remained the owner until her death in 1989. The farm was left to Charles D. Williams Sr. until his death in November of 1997 when the farm was then put into a family trust, which still exists today. Currently the farm is raising Herford cattle, hay, corn and small grains.
THE FARM
SEPT/OCT 2015 87 THE SHOWTIMES
The beef herd now consists of over a hundred mature cows, Hereford and Crossbred. A.I. and Olivia’s past show bulls offer the quality genetics to help improve the herd each year. The registered Hereford herd produces high quality bulls that are then marketed to local and regional buyers. The higher quality heifers are kept as replacements and prospect show heifers. A few steers and heifers are marketed to local 4H and FFA members to show at local shows. The calving cycles split between late spring and Mid-fall, which allows the Williams’ to a marketable calf crop almost year round. The better fall heifers are halter broken and advertised to Junior’s in Virginia and surrounding states in early summer while the spring heifers are advertised in late fall. Most bulls are early spring born and therefore advertised early fall to buyers looking at next year’s breeding’s. The breeding program decisions are usually made after seeing the champions and division winners from national shows and the higher selling calves from large production sales each year. Each year new genetics are incorporated into the program to keep things “fresh”. A select few exceptional crossbred cows are kept each year and then artificially inseminated to the popular club calf bulls from that year. The calves from these matings are often sold for local shows and county fairs. Olivia has started to help with the breeding decisions of her past show heifers and she has had a few very “fancy” calves born from those decisions.
THE FUTURE
Over the years, with the help of Dr. Allen Strecker DVM who is the farm vet and family friend, Olivia has been able to successfully show club calf based heifers. Olivia wants to continue showing and raising Herefords but is enjoying adding a club calf influence into the herd in hopes of producing quality show heifers and steers that can be shown successfully at any level. A production sale to market these heifers and steers is also a goal that Olivia would like to achieve. With quality mature cows, breeding for progeny with good genetics is already a main priority on the farm and Olivia hopes to increase the herd number as well as increasing the quality of each cow. Olivia hopes to be able to increase the Embryo Transfer use on the farm, which would help to more easily create “big time” show calves for the future. Olivia is now looking at junior colleges where she can continue livestock judging, with the ultimate goal of becoming a lawyer specializing in agriculture. She and her parents will continue to breed quality Herefords as well as manage the farm for future generations of the family. ▪

M
y name is Dalton Lind and I am 17 years old and currently a senior at Eaton High School. A few weeks ago I was fortunate enough to have won Grand Champion Steer at the Colorado State Fair. Winning the State Fair this year was extra special to my family and I as it was our last state fair. In 2012, my brother Colton, had Reserve Champion and since then winning the State Fair has been the goal that my family has been striving for.
In addition to winning the State Fair, my high school baseball team won their 11th State Championship this spring, and was also named Max Prep Small School National Champions. In addition to my team’s accolades, I also received a baseball scholarship to Iowa Western, where I will pitch next fall. All I can say is I have been extremely blessed with an amazing year in and out of the show ring, without the help and support of my family and friends, none of this would have been possible. Winning the Colorado State Fair is nothing short of awesome!

Though without the help of multiple individuals, I would not have been able to accomplish all that I did this year. I would like to thank my brother Colton, who spent many hours in the barn while I was gone playing baseball. Wade and Kaylene Rodgers, who sold me the steer, Wayne and Barb Ohlrichs, who raised “Big O”, Nolan Ferguson who helped fit and clip at the numerous prospect shows, My Cousin, Taylor Dorsey, who helped fit “Big O” at State Fair, and Dustin and Kim Dorsey, who have always supported me in and out of the show ring. And finally, a huge thank you is also owed to the rest of the Rodgers Cattle Company crew for all their help with my steer and the rest of my family for allowing me to do what I love and reach my goals.
DALTON SHARES HIS STORY.
SEPT/OCT 2015
This winter and spring I was lucky enough to have multiple successes in the show ring with my steer “Big O”. Having won Reserve at the Sneak-a-Peak Preview, Reserve at the National Western Stock Show, Reserve at Green and Gold and finally Grand Champion at the Blackout show this last March.

THE FATE OF MY SUCCESS
H
ello, my name is Alyssa DePorter. I am a Junior at Platte Valley High School in Kersey, Colorado. I am currently serving on the Executive Committee for the Platte Valley FFA Chapter. I would first like to thank The Showtimes Magazine for the opportunity to write a few words and for the love and support throughout my showing career. Since I was a young girl, I have had an interest in showing and raising livestock. I started showing lambs and pigs when I was nine years old, and I was hooked on exhibiting livestock. I have always been a very goal oriented girl. At age nine, I came up with a goal to win Grand Champion in all four species (pig, goats, sheep and steers) at the Weld County Fair. With the help of my family, we started after this goal. In 2009, we won the pig show. In 2010, we won the goat show. In 2012, we won the steer show, and finally, we won both grand and reserve lamb in 2013. For quite a few enjoyable years I spent countless hours in the barn and my love for being in the barn has never stopped and never will. Winning the Colorado State Fair wasn’t just one day rolling up to Pueblo, Colorado to just get lucky with a hand shake and a banner. Months and months of preparation determines the fate of your success. No matter how hard I worked, I always had some one helping me along the way to guide me through the year. First I would like to thank my father Travis and

my wonderful Bonus Mom Toni for giving me the most wonderful opportunity of showing livestock. Also to all the men and women who have taught me how to properly show, feed and fit my animals, these people include the Naibauer family, Huwa family, Jess Nighswonger, Ty Bayer, Kirby Eaves, Ty Allen, Tyson Rule, Travis Otterstad, Larissa Seewald, Becca Peter, Victor Mares and many other people dedicated to the industry. Lastly I would like to thank my best friend Charlee Teague for being my main supporter and future business partner. All of my experiences with showing livestock have brought me down a path to what I would like my future to hold. My plans after high school and when I am too old to show are that I would like to attend a junior college and immediately follow up with a senior college. During college I would also like to be on a successful judging team and evaluate livestock. Over all winning the Colorado State fair is one of my greatest accomplishments for not only myself but for all the folks that support me. I take my hat off to the entire lamb show that day; it was a very impressive line up of sheep. I was especially impressed with the livestock that my fellow Weld County peers brought to the show that day! I have a couple more years to show and enjoy my love for the show ring and will dedicate my future to do my part to keep this industry alive and growing. Hope to see you all at the next show!

A GREAT YEAR
M
y name is Aaron Suhr and I am a senior at Waukee High School. I have shown cattle for 9 years and goats the last 4 years. Winning the Iowa State Fair has been a dream come true. This has been a goal of mine since I started 4-H. All my hard work and dedication paid off, and that grand champion slap was one I will never forget! At that time I felt that everything that I had done this summer from the early mornings to the late nights in the barn paid off. My days started

at the barn getting calves in before it got hot and didn’t end until it got cool enough to kick calves out. My days consisted of a lot of rinsing, brushing, and blowing on my calves. I also have received help with my calves from my older brother Colton Suhr, and my dad Rod Suhr. This dream of mine couldn’t have been possible without Justin Mogck who raised this great one. I truly appreciate the support of my family and couldn’t have done it without them. Our weekends this summer consisted of traveling to open shows and I was honored to win eight shows during this time and three reserves. This has been a great year for me and my steer “Todd”, and one I will never forget!

CLIMBING to the
TOP
Capturing that number one spot. BY TYLER CLARK, OH
Tyler Clark is from Covington, Ohio and showed the Grand Champion Steer at the 2015 Ohio State Fair. Tyler’s parents are Scott & Shannon and he has one sister, Madison. Tyler and his family are no stranger to the Ohio State Fair as they have been showing cattle there for the past 46 consecutive years. Although they’ve landed in the Top 5 numerous times, this was the first year that they captured the number one spot. They’re truly the epitome of the phrase “work hard and never give up”. Tyler is a sophomore at Black Hawk College, East Campus and has plans to transfer to complete his BS degree. ▪

DIVING IN HEAD FIRST
H
ow did a kid who has shown horses since age 5 exhibit the Grand Champion Steer at the 2015 Indiana State Fair? It’s a pretty interesting story! Let me tell you about it.
beyond the backdrop
My name is Bryceston Hoover, and I’m from Hanna, Indiana. I live in LaPorte County which is in Northern Indiana, near southern Lake Michigan. I’m 14 years old and a freshman at South Central High School. My parents are Bruce and Debbie Hoover. I have three siblings – Brittaney, 26; Bryant, 23, and Brett, 17. They are very accomplished horse showmen. Until about 4 years ago, horses were the most important animal project on our farm. Now, beef cattle are just as important (if not more!). My show career started with horse showmanship at age 5. It was understood that I would follow along in my siblings’ footsteps. Then, at age 10, my course really changed – all because of a
HORSES, CHARLIE & THE ULTIMATE PRIZE. BY BRYCESTON HOOVER, IN
conversation at a wedding reception. I had wanted a calf since I started 4-H. But, I was a horse showman with no experience in cattle. I had seen the calves at Todd Shireman’s farm in Wanatah, Indiana, which was only 7 miles from me. My brother had shown some hogs from Shiremans earlier that summer so I had seen their calves and wanted a calf of my own. But, my parents said no. So, on December 30, the Shiremans told my parents at a wedding reception that they had one “no sale” steer with the tag “Charlie” left. (Cattle check-in was December 31.) On the morning of December 31, I was told to get in the truck. Imagine my surprise when I arrived at the LaPorte County Fairgrounds during cattle check-in. Todd Shireman walked over to me and said,” Sign this paper – he’s yours!” There, in the trailer, was Charlie! My parents did not know it yet, but Charlie would change my life (and theirs) forever.
INDIANA STATE FAIR My parents told me that Charlie was my project, and I would need to do the work myself. So, I did. And, by age 10, I had learned how to wash, rinse, blow, and feed a 4-H beef steer. The Shireman Family - Todd, Rita, Dr. Clint, and Nate - have helped me every step of the way. Charlie earned 4th overall at the LaPorte County Fair., and I was hooked.
My Indiana State Fair Grand Champion Steer is a story in itself. You see, I almost killed him! Soon after I got him, he refused to drink. I tried everything. After about a week, we realized some stray current was making its way to the water tank. He was getting a shock every time he tried to drink! (That’s why his name was Shocker.) He always seemed a little green to take to any winter shows, so Shocker never saw a show until showmanship competition at the Indiana State Fair. I have never worked so hard in my life – feeding, training hair, and practicing with a calf whose only competitions would be twice at the Indiana State Fair. I was proud to win the Intermediate Crossbred Showman award with Shocker. He showed like he’d done it a million times. (All that practice in my horse arena must have helped.) When I entered the ring under Judge Jimmy Williams, my heart was beating a million miles an hour. Judge Williams spent 10 minutes evaluating Shocker and one other steer.
The beef cattle project has been good to me, and Shocker made it even better. I want to add, no one achieves goals alone. I thank my parents, grandparents, and siblings for their encouragement and support. I thank Todd Shireman and his family for teaching me about cattle and how to have pride and passion for what you do. Thanks, everyone, for a phenomenal journey! ▪
145 THE SHOWTIMES
In 2014, Todd Shireman said I was ready to have a calf at a higher level. We picked out a Simmental steer I named Nelson. Nelson was breed champion at several open shows and was Champion Simmental at both Hoosier Beef Congress and the Indiana State Fair, earning him Hall of Fame honors.
But, Shocker showed like he’d been in the ring his whole life. He won the class and went on to win Champion Crossbred. As I entered the Coliseum for the Final Drive that evening, I thought about how far I’d come - from a little kid showing horses to a Grand Champion Steer.
SEPT/OCT 2015
I have continued to set bigger goals for my cattle project each year. In 2013, I exhibited the Grand Champion Steer at the LaPorte County Fair – amazing day for me. LaPorte is a tough county with around 200 head of cattle exhibited each year.
It seems like forever.

UNDER THE SPOT LIGHTS
I
have been showing heifers since before I can remember; I started showing when I was three years old. It is my life; I love it. I especially love the state and national shows. I was so honored and excited to be chosen the 2015 Indiana State Fair Supreme Heifer. It is so awesome to show under the spot lights of the coliseum in the Grand Drive at my State Fair. To be slapped as the top heifer was amazing! I spend a lot of time in the barn all year with my heifers and I am humbled when it pays off like it did this year. I am also very blessed BY BECCA CHAMBERLIN, IN by family and friends who help me achieve my dreams in this industry. It takes a great team and I definitely have that; I am so thankful. â–Ş

My parents are Todd & Joyce Line and I have two siblings, a brother, Dalton, and a sister, Payton. I live on our family farm in Seaton, IL, where we row crop 2,500 acres of corn and soybeans. We also manage 160 head of Simmental and Maine cows, in which we raise an assortment of breeding and club calves from. I am a sophomore at Black Hawk College East Campus in Galva, IL. After receiving my Associates Degree, I plan to transfer to a 4-year university, where I will major in Ag Business. I would like to thank Jason Roeder, Brandon Jones, Willie Weis, and Derek Evens for their help with “Smitty” this year. I would also like to thank Monsanto and Governor Bruce Rauner for purchasing my steer for $65,000 at the Illinois State Fair Sale of Champions. I am blessed and thankful to be a part of such a great industry. ▪

BRINGING HOME TWO SUPREME TITLES. BY LAUREN MAY, WI
M
y alarm is set for 3am with a busy day ahead. On this day, I am more nervous than ever. I have two steers and a heifer to get ready. With my days of summer dedicated to caring for my cattle, it all comes down to this day at the Wisconsin State Fair.
First let me introduce myself. My name is Lauren May, I am 15 years old and I live in Mineral Point, Wisconsin. I attend Mineral Point High School and this year I am a sophomore. I am involved in various activities such as volleyball, gymnastics, and of course my priority is showing cattle. By the time we got to the fairgrounds it was about 4:30 and I knew with every second and minute that passed, it was getting closer to the time I would be stepping into the show ring. My brother and I took my steers down to the ring to exercise and then we came back up to feed and wash them. When we finally got them dry it was time to start fitting, that’s when my nerves really started to kicked in. When we finally walked down to the show ring I knew I had to show my steer the best I possibly could. There are so many tough competitors at our state fair so I knew I had to bring on my A game. We were on deck to go into the next class in the staging area where you can only bring one fitter. I brought my brother, Brock, because he always says the best things to calm my nerves or make me laugh before I go in. When I got into the ring my nerves started to settle down and my steer was

Next, we started to fit my Hereford heifer, Babe, because she had been selected champion Hereford the night before. This heifer is probably my favorite animal on our place. We have a great bond together and I knew she would act great for me. As I entered the ring they announced my name and what county I was from. The previous day judge came in to make his selection. The atmosphere was building with emotions and the bleachers were packed. I love the excitement all of this brings, my stomach turns with anticipation. We all made a final circle around the ring. Then the two judges both made their final remarks and then one walked behind my heifer and selected her as Supreme Champion Heifer. The only person down there to celebrate with me was my dad because everyone else was fitting on

showing like a dream. I won my class and then I had to go back in for division. As we waited to go into division I knew it would be tough. As we lined up head to tail, the judge made his comments and then he made his selection for Champion Crossbred. I was so happy and I started to cry. The first thing I did when I got out of the ring was hug my brother. But, there was still a lot of showing left to do.

with what had just happened. It was an awesome feeling knowing that all my hard work had paid off.
I came out of the ring and went up to where the steers were lining up. Then it was time to head into the ring with my steer. Again, they announced my name and my county, and the feeling of that never gets old. Your heart starts beating fast as you see all the people in the crowd. I especially get butterflies when I see all my family and friends in the crowd cheering me on. The judge gave everyone one last look. He then came and shook my hand and slapped my steer. I couldn’t believe what just happened. My steer had been selected Grand Champion and my heifer was Supreme Champion. This time my whole family was there to celebrate with me. At the time I didn’t know what to feel. I was just so thankful and overjoyed
The next day, we moved our animals to the Camp of Champs, which is the champion of each breed of the cattle, pigs, and lambs. We stayed for the next four days showing the public the champion animals and explaining to them what it is like to raise a champion and how much work they are. The Camp of Champs was a lot of fun. I met a lot of new people and it was such a great experience. Finally, I need to thank everyone who made my state fair such a great one. First, I would like to thank the Neil family and Loverin family for raising my steer and selling him to me. I would also like to thank my family and friends that came to watch me at the fair. Next, I would like to thank Bruce Suddeth and his family for their help and support and for being my second family. And of course my own family. My siblings Shea and Jaclyn for coming to watch me. My brother, Brock for all his help and for sharing all his knowledge with me. I honestly couldn’t do it without him and I’m so thankful for him because he is one of my big supporters! Mom and Dad for being the best parents and always believing in me. Without them I wouldn’t be the person I am today. Also, my dad for being great at what he does. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be showing today. Finally, I would like to thank God for all these wonderful opportunities and amazing people I have met through this industry. Thank you and good luck to everyone this show season! ▪

his is my last year showing 4-H livestock. For the past 21 years our family has been involved in 4-H and has exhibited a variety of livestock. I have really focused on showing sheep at various shows but always enjoyed working with beef cattle. I accomplished my dream of winning Grand Champion Market Lamb at the 2012 Minnesota State Fair and Grand Champion Market Lamb at AK-SAR-BEN. But I never imagined I could actually win grand champion steer at our State Fair but it happened and it was the icing on my 4-H career. We bought “Ron” the composite Charolais steer, from Greg and Jess Recknor, in January just before the weigh in deadline. Greg called and asked if I wanted to show a steer my last year at state fair. I felt like we had found a calf I could put my time and energy into. From my experience showing champion sheep, I knew how much hard work and dedication it would take to produce a champion. So I focused on Ron, and set a goal to win the Minnesota State Fair. Competition is very tough and sometimes unpredictable in our county and state level so it’s still hard to believe we won. I know I couldn’t have asked for a better team to accomplish this goal. The “A” team consisted of my brother Jake, Greg Recknor, Jess Recknor and Jayson Olson. Major support came from my brothers, John and Jared and of course my Dad, and Mom. There are many hardworking, deserving exhibitors in Minnesota 4-H so I am very humbled to have my steer chosen as Grand Champion at the 2015 MInnesota State Fair. ▪

Harmony Hill is a purebred, multi-breed, seedstock operation, owned and operated by the Knebel Family of Winamac, Indiana. With their primary emphasis on elite phenotypic quality, they raise and sell cattle that fulfill the most fundamental basics of profitability and function, while having the elite look demanded by their customers to promote their respective operations in a show ring setting. Through success of their cattle on a national scale, they continue to strive towards raising elite seedstock that prove to be profitable investments for their customers. Their story begins in the winter of 1997. Garrett’s cousins the Ruff brothers were preparing a couple show steers that they had collected for the Hoosier Beef Congress. In growing up on a large-scale dairy operation, Garrett, age eight, decided he would attend that winter to experience his first beef cattle show. His mother, Jennifer, had given him twenty dollars for food while he was in attendance in Indianapolis. Freshly settled in, after watering his cousin’s thirsty steers and completely ruining their chance of weighing into a lighter class, he walked to the supply trailer and used the twenty dollars his mother gave him to purchase a can of adhesive and a comb. He returned home after the show with his new purchases and pleaded with his parents for a beef animal. From that point forward, the passion to breed and exhibit purebred seedstock has never wavered. In 1999, Dan Knebel, Garrett’s father, purchased his first group of yearling heifers from a predominantly Chianina breeder from Hagerstown, Indiana, Mark Cronk. With those thirteen heifers, and Garrett’s first show heifer, a Simmental, the Knebel Family started breeding and raising beef cattle. Over the years, the herd continued to build and slowly transformed from a mostly Continental-influenced herd, to a more British-Influenced herd. It became apparent to them at that point in time that much more attention needed paid towards deeper sided, softer-appearing cattle that were

While Garrett was off at college, The name Harmony Hill was derived from the Knebel his father was the family’s love of music. Garrett and Catherine Knebel sang country music semi-professionally for a while backbone of their during and after college. They called themselves program and its “Strings of Aberdeen”. To the unassuming direction. Garrett public, it was a fresh, catchy name. But to them, it referenced a hidden meaning would try and get of “show strings” of “Aberdeen home as often as he could Angus” cattle. With Garrett and to prepare some cattle to Catherine’s love of singing sell or attend a show or country music together, the more Knebel family collectively two. However, Dan has flexible decided on Harmony about as much passion Hill as their name in their for the cattle as anyone, of choice for joints. Their their cattle and he kept forging alternative endeavor. ahead, trying to keep became Angus things afloat while also cattle. Not only were managing his trucking they extremely easycompany. Through fleshing and successful Garrett’s time spent to exhibit, but Garrett and at Butler Community his sister Catherine found the College and Oklahoma American Angus Association to have State University on their respective the most opportunities for junior livestock judging teams, he members at the time, and quickly gained skills, knowledge, identified themselves with that and built relationships that made his time spent in Kansas and Oklahoma very worthwhile. El Dorado is where he met his best friend Michael “Karl” Kinna, who has been an integral partner of Harmony Hill and the Flash
In the spring of 2013, after having an extra special crop of heifers, they decided the thought of having a heifer sale was either now or never. Thus dawned the start of the Flash & Function Sale. They knew they had the quality to deliver success, but the idea of finding homes for the twenty top-end females they had hand selected out of their programs, was
a daunting task. In putting together the sale offering every year, the main criteria for selection was/is soundness, practicality and function, with enough look to be competitive in the show ring. Garrett and Karl happened to meet another future industry leader while in college, named Morgan Meisenheimer. After deciding to have a sale, they knew that Morgan had the talent to deliver, and wanted her assistance in marketing their cattle. Garrett says, “Morgan, quite simply, is in a league of her own. It is my belief that great livestock photographers have to also be incredible livestock evaluators. It is about bringing out the specific animal’s best qualities and
The most challenging element, they feel, in their specific industry is poor, or bias evaluation of cattle at major livestock shows. It should be the goal of everyone involved within the cattle industry to create the most elite, profitable cattle that the United States possibly can; and with poor, bias, or political evaluations, comes set back. There is nothing more frustrating to them than evaluators that continue to be selected and quite simply cannot break down an animal. Equally as unnerving is a lack of public justification over the microphone when certain decisions are made. Most judges have a tendency to just describe an animal’s phenotype, as opposed to providing comparative justification as to why a certain decision was reached. If judges can describe their reasoning for certain decisions, that needs to be respected. But if there’s no conscious reasoning within a class, how do judges expect to maintain respect for

Harmony Hill’s emphasis in selecting and breeding cattle in their program is heavily phenotype based. With Garrett’s judging experience in college, coupled with his natural ability to read the future in livestock derived from his father; aligning a solid foundation of cows to breed from has been an exciting and rewarding endeavor. With the undying philosophy taught by Mr. Chris Mullinix that good cattle are built from the ground up; that philosophy has remained the foremost important thing in their selection of elite cattle within their program. Rarely will anyone see an animal marketed from Harmony Hill, or shown by them, that isn’t large footed, extremely flexible in their joints, and sound moving. That is the most basic requirement for an animal to remain in their program. Furthermore, Garrett has found the basic element of maturity to be a leading selection tool. They will always select for cattle that are later maturing, and will continue to expand in all directions through
calving. Garrett states that cattle are still sold by the pound, and not all larger cattle require more input. He also despises cattle that are quick, and early maturing. It’s their goal at Harmony Hill to raise sound, easy fleshing, skeletally extended cattle that mature at or above a six frame score.

themselves? Paying what livestock exhibitors do to attend livestock shows, it is imperative to select judges that will provide an unbiased, educated, experienced opinion as to why certain animals are more profitable than others. The close decisions become personal preference, and that’s understandable. However, if cattle are genuinely evaluated, personal preference should be few and far between. Currently, Garrett works full time for Agassiz Seed & Supply in West Fargo, North Dakota as a Territory Business Manager. While overseeing the decisions at home, he actually plans to settle down in the Northern Great Plains, and expand the cattle operation in that direction. Dan and Jennifer live at the home place in Winamac, Indiana, as Dan manages his trucking company and Jennifer directs the special education program at a local school corporation, alongside building a start-up
homemade ice cream business with her daughter, Catherine. They are fortunate enough to have Ian Hall, a young cattleman from Berthold, North Dakota, as Operations Manager for Harmony Hill and Coordinator of the Flash & Function Sale. Harmony Hill and their partners will hold the third edition of the Flash & Function Sale on October 17th this fall. They will offer twenty to twenty-five elite show heifers, in a phone bid-off. ATTITUDE PRINCIPLES FOR SUCCESS:
SEPT/OCT 2015
WHAT IS ATTITUDE? Attitude is the power to stay positive despite the circumstances. When you have a positive attitude, you are optimistic and hopeful. That way of thinking can be contagious to those around you, even your fellow showmen. How you look at your next big show can have a powerful effect on the results you will see. Have a negative attitude and your work leading up the show and even prep on show day will be more difficult and a lot less fulfilling. Stay positive despite the hard work and any setbacks you may have with your animal will directly affect how you achieve your goals and attain success. Things don’t always go as planned with your livestock projects. How you react and handle these tough situations shows a lot about your character and the effect you have on others. Be kind, helpful and respectful both in and out of the ring. Wish your competitors good luck and, although winning your class is a great feeling, it may not always happen. If it doesn’t, keep a positive attitude, be gracious and congratulate the winners on a job well done. We learn just as much from losing as we do from winning.

Do’s and Don’ts of ATTITUDE Make a choice. Your attitude is your choice. When you accept responsibility for your attitude, you can see every experience as an opportunity to learn and grow. You can choose to be positive or choose to be negative. Which one do you prefer? Blame others. When things don’t go your way in the ring on show day, it’s easy to blame the judge, blame other exhibitors for cheating, etc. However, by blaming others, you lose control of the situation and the ability to choose to stay positive. Be in control. You are responsible for the input you allow from your fellow showmen. Do you know someone who always has a poor attitude, blames others or plays the victim? Do you enjoy being around that person? An old adage says, “correct the faults in yourself that you find in others.” Let exhaustion bring you down. You work long and hard getting your animals ready for show time, and lack of sleep often comes along with it. Fatigue, however, can also wipe out a positive attitude. Allow yourself time to rest and relax so you can have a great attitude no matter the situation. Make a contribution to others. Ever see someone upset or down about how she placed in a class? Next time, try to encourage that person, compliment her…the more you share your positive attitude with others, the better you make their day and the more you reinforce it in your own life. Repeat your mistakes. Practice makes permanent. If you react poorly after losing, make a conscious effort to work on evaluating what you can do better next time. When you practice choosing a good attitude, controlling your environment and encouraging others, you’ll find being positive is much easier to come by!

HOW IS YOUR ATTITUDE? Take a look at the Do’s and Don’ts on the previous page. Can you think of a situation where you had to work on having a positive attitude? What happened and how did you overcome it? How did your reaction affect others around you? Join us at facebook.com/thewinnersbrand or thewinnersbrand.com and click on the link provided to share your ATTITUDE story! You will be entered for a chance to win a Weaver Leather Livestock prize package and your story will be shared in the next issue of Showtimes Magazine! CONGRATULATIONS TO MIRANDA D... ...winner of the INFLUENCE Weaver Leather prize package! Read below to learn how she demonstrates INFLUENCE with her livestock projects. Thank you to everyone who entered! “For as long as I can remember, I’ve been told that no matter where you are, people are always watching. I don’t believe being influential means you give the best speeches or have the most awards. I believe that you can influence those around you by even doing everyday things. I believe that I influence my fellow showmen because I not only strive to be my best in the show ring, but also outside the ring. At shows, being kind and respectful influences people to do the same. I know as showmen, it’s hard to lose, but I know you influence people in the way that you react to the loss. The same thing can be said about winning. As a showman, I always try to influence my fellow showmen in positive ways. I think that happiness is contagious and it only takes one to make a whole group happy. I want everyone to enjoy the show life as much as I do, so I try my hardest to be a positive influence.”

JIMMY’S ROUNDUP CAFE & FRIED PIES 1301 SW 59TH 405-685-1177
So much for the FALL BREAK from stock shows, seems like I didn’t have one this year! The older I get the faster the merry-go-round spins and I have yet to catch the brass ring for a free ride! Time to get down to some serious business ‘EATING.’ Regardless of where I go, I try to find that little place the locals like to frequent that has the Mom & Pop home cooking that is so hard to find on the road. AMERICAN ROYAL
I just as well start with Kansas City and my number one place to eat on the road ‘Stroud’s North.’ This is the absolute, hands down, best place I can recommend to dine at on the road. From the fried chicken that they claim to choke themselves to the steaks, I have tried almost everything on the menu and have never been disappointed with anything. The meals are served family style with refills on the sides along with fresh cinnamon rolls with every order! Moving on.... I searched for years to find a fish place that I would recommend and was taken to that establishment by Ernie Radino who grew up in the Kansas City, Kansas neighborhood where ‘City Fish & More’ is located. I must say I am forever grateful to him for sharing this spot with me. City Fish is not a place you would drive by and say, “that place looks like it has the best fish around these parts,” but buddy it does! I was treated to my first ‘Basa’ at City Fish and have since made several trips to the west side to eat ‘Basa.’ It was explained to me that it’s a Vietnamese catfish. I can’t guarantee that, but one thing is for sure, it is the best – the price is right on for the quantity and quality at City Fish & More. I have another little joint, and I do mean little, that I like to frequent while in Kansas City, ‘Town Topic Hamburgers.’ It is located just east of the American Royal on Broadway Street. This little fifty’s diner has been around forever and puts out some the best burgers and fries. I wouldn’t recommend taking a large group there due to seating and parking but the food is sure worth the wait if you do happen to catch them at a busy time. TULSA STATE FAIR
Going south from Kansas City I wind up at Tulsa for the Tulsa State Fair and wouldn’t you know it, I do a little eating while I’m there! I’m going to try and keep it short for Tulsa as it seems I’m always eating there! Elmer’s BBQ is very

high on my list of Go-To places in Tulsa. The ribs and smoked bologna are some of the very best in the nation, not to mention the homemade desserts! Elmer’s has been around for over 35 years and I can see why. I tried very hard not to included ‘Los Cabos’ on my list for Tulsa, but I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to talk about it some more. I have to thank Brandi Herndon for sharing this spot with me. The selection here is unmatched! I have not had anything from the menu that I would not try again. The price and parking are very good here!!!
FIND MORE PLACES TO EAT THIS FALL!
OKLAHOMA STATE FAIR
Down the turnpike to the west is the State Fair of Oklahoma in OKC. I could write a book on places to eat in OKC, but time and space doesn’t allow for that so I’m sticking to my guns on this one. Needless to say, it is a repeat favorite of mine but I just can’t help it - ‘Jimmy’s Roundup Café & Fried Pies’ is the ultimate stock show place to dine with a group of adults or hungry stock show kids. The menu here is unmatched for choice, price, quality and quantity. The Chicken Fried Steak here is almost as good as my wife’s and that is saying something!!!! I’m thinking that’s about enough for now and once again I have to apologize to the folks going to Ak Sar Ben for not having a place to recommend for you to dine at. I keep saying to please feel free to send me your favorite places to eat so I can do a ‘professional’ revue for myself. I do promise to try some new places on my world tour this fall so I can have some new places to elaborate on. You can now find Burt’s Best Bites on the Showtimes APP to find the list of dining establishments that have made THE LIST! Till next time! ▪

From the show ring to the kitchen. BY ASHLEY WIEBE, MN
Some may recognize the Wiebe family as the “livestock showing Wiebes”, but many others would actually recognize them as “the good baker Wiebe’s.” Some of you reading this are thinking, “Who are these Wiebe people?” Let’s digress a second.
There have been good bakers on both sides of the family for generations, but Sarah didn’t

233 THE SHOWTIMES
To this family of ten, food is something that comes naturally. With that many mouths to feed, a huge garden, endless canned and frozen foods, and a supply of home raised meat, you develop a knack for being efficient and also get to do some kitchen experimenting along the way. This holds especially true in the summer, and you can bet when you see the Wiebe crew at a show there is a container (or two) of cookies, cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, or some kind of treat somewhere in the truck and trailer.
The question got brought up all the time - “Hey Wiebe’s, can we have your recipes or better yet, will you make a cookbook?” Several of them talked about making one, yet, the years crawled by with no cookbook. Jessie decided to take matters into her own hands and started compiling recipes - no small feat. With Sarah’s help in organization, Ashley’s contribution with recipes, Jessie’s dedication and everyone else’s willingness to test new recipes, Wiebe Cookin’ was born. Not only has the cookbook been a smash hit, it has earned Jessie a grand champion in food and nutrition at the county fair and has been helping her pay for college.
SEPT/OCT 2015
The Mark & Sarah Wiebe crew calls Bingham Lake, Minnesota home. Mark heads up the family crop and livestock farm, running about 1100 acres of crops and crossbred cattle. Sarah is the glue that holds the operation together by running the books, homeschooling the kids, and holding down the fort while the gang is gone showing. Ashley is an Ag teacher in Muscatine, Iowa, and is in the process of expanding her sheep flock. Jake works at Nickel Construction on the field tiling crew and helps Mark with the crop farming during busy times. Brooke is finishing her last year of nursing school at the University of South Dakota. Jessie is heading to Montana for a year at Arrowhead Bible College, and the rest of the crew- Megan, Matt, Dani Jo and Zach are at home.
start too much in the kitchen until Jake was born. That’s when the bread baking and cookie making really took off. All the kids have grown up learning to bake and cook and of course, eating the end results. The goodies were hits at family get togethers, church potlucks, and any occasion there was to bring food. From word of mouth, Sarah started getting calls to do some catering of her most requested dishes, such as cinnamon rolls, egg bakes, shredded beef, homemade buns, shredded potatoes, twinkies, brownies and more. Though this has slowed down with the business of life, making and decorating cakes still happens regularly. All this baking, of course, takes time, and what better way to efficiently do it than by having the kids help out. The life lessons, intra-personal skills, salesmanship, business savvy and the ability to work in the kitchen turned out to be invaluable, especially when it came to 4-H food projects. This year Jessie tackled this in a whole new way.

Just like baking and cooking, livestock has been in both sides of the Wiebe family for generations. Sarah showed dairy cattle, beef steers and a few breeding sheep. Mark grew up milking dairy cattle and showed a few sheep, but mostly raised hogs. Grandpa LeRoy Wiebe raised hogs a long time and put up the first finishing barn in 1972. As the years progressed, so did the emphasis on raising show pigs. At one point, Mark was up to 80 sows and raised numerous Minnesota State Fair FFA and county fair winners. Sarah, Ashley and Jake spent lots of hours road-tripping with Mark around the country in search of the latest and greatest genetics before social media and internet sales got hot.
1999 Mark with herd boar “Mac”
It was only a matter of time until the Wiebe children headed to the show ring. Since they are similar in age, Ashley and Jake got started at the same time by helping Mark with pig sales and running up to the infamous Polka Town Hog Show. Jake liked it, but Ashley wasn’t so fond of being pushed around by the hogs. The aunts and uncles decided to intervene a little and found a pair of skinny little ewe lambs to show at the jackpot show at the county fair. “Elvira” and “Elmira” may not have done very well and showmanship skills had a lot to be desired, but with that show in 1996, Todd Franz, Darcy Dahna, Stacy Harland helped jump start the next thing. Ashley and Jake continued showing home raised hogs through the late 1990’s. With crashing hog prices, semen prices rising and falling conception rate, Mark decided that instead of continuing to downsize, it was time to get out of the pig business. By this point, jackpot sheep showing was starting to take more time, and Ashley decided she liked red calves and wanted to show some. It was out of the pigs and into the cattle business. Ashley purchased half of two Shorthorn heifers and showed a heifer or two at county fair a few years. Jake liked it and jumped in by showing steers. Mark started buying a few Shorthorn heifers, and pretty soon the cattle herd was taking off. Some open shows, county fair, a couple of trips to Minnesota State Fair and a few Shorthorn PACE shows worked their way in between jackpotting sheep all over the Midwest. There had been a few highlights in the sheep ring, but knowledgeable help from Ty Allen, Uncle Terry Harland, plus extra work in showmanship really started to pay off, and success in the Northern Plains Club Lamb
2008 Jake with the Franz bred Minnesota State Fair Champion Market Lamb
Circuit started to come.
While sheep are still the main event in the Wiebe show barn, there are still pigs in the picture. The cattle have transformed from Shorthorns to mostly crossbreds. Now it’s Jessie’s last year of 4-H and Matt’s first year showing at state fair. The little kids are waiting their turn, and the older kids always seem to find a way to come home for the big shows. that ended up winning the heavy division and making a run for overall at Aksarben. As Ashley and Jake got older and started to age out and Brooke and Jessie started to take over, both had their fair share of successes in the show ring, including lots of jackpot show champions and numerous reserve champions at the Minnesota State Fair. Little did most people know, there were a lot more than four Wiebe showmen. When Brooke graduated out and Megan and Matt made their showing debut, a lot of people started asking where all these Wiebe kids kept coming from. The big surprise for many of them was there were still more kids at home yet!
SEPT/OCT 2015
By 2003, Ashley and Jake were the only Wiebe kids really known. Brooke didn’t want to show until later into her career, and Jessie was quite a bit younger than the others. There had been a little success with the sheep, but this year a wether from Rule Sheep Co changed things with a win for Ashley at the Minnesota State Fair. The cattle and hog showing was still a thing but took a backseat to the sheep, and the rest, as they say, is history. Brooke decided she wanted in on this livestock thing, Jessie finally grew up a little, and the success at jackpot shows and Midwest livestock events continued. 2005 was a great year with a sheep from Keith Berry
make 2008 a great year by breeding the sheep “SpiderMonkey” that won so many jackpot shows. But Jake and Jessie quickly overshadowed that with Grand and Reserve Champion Market Lamb honors at the Minnesota State Fair.

A 4-H STORY PASTOR RANDY DAVIS TALKS ABOUT WHAT REALLY MATTERS IN LIFE. BY PASTOR RANDY DAVIS, LIMA, OH
HOW WE MET RANDY We met Randy Davis when we visited Lima, Ohio for Maine Junior Nationals back in 2012. He is the Winegardner family's pastor. They had asked him to give a sermon during the show. We were greatly impressed with Randy. Since then, we have listened to his sermons in our office from time to time. When Brad Winegardner came out to Colorado to judge our show we visited about having Randy write a message for our upcoming issues. We hope you enjoy his message!
T
oday I am sitting reflecting on my daughter’s last year of 4-H with her Horse project named Crow. What an awesome run it has been. It all started with a friend’s dad loaning us a horse for the summer to use as a 4-H project. Little did we know what that one summer would lead to? We took the horse to a $50/month rental stall at the county fairgrounds. We bought hay for $2/bale from the horse owner. We bought feed at $9/bag. We had to purchase a saddle but didn’t make a very good choice, so we borrowed one for that first year. All in all we got in pretty cheap but the memories of that first year were like the credit card commercial, “priceless!” My daughter fell in love with the horse and the whole competition of barrel racing, poles, stakes and the catalog race. The very first year she won showmanship and was immediately trust into the “Champion of Champions” for horses. Remember that was our first year and we didn’t even know
what that meant. It was ok that she didn’t win since she had no idea how to show any of the other animals at all. But what a first year it was.
There are a couple of points I make from this scripture. #1. One of the most important things we do in the loss of a loved one is to reflect on our life with the deceased. Remembering all the good times and maybe even a couple of the bad. But we reflect and remember our life with them. Reflection is something that we do too little of and only s needed. I want to challenge each of you reading this article today to “Reflect on your show season!” And don’t just reflect on the end result of how many ribbons you won or missed out on. Showing is so much more than that. How many of life’s lessons did your kids learn? How much time did you get to spend together that would not have happened if it were not for showing these animals? Is your kid learning to lead or still being lead by others for now? Reflect on your life and what really matters! I love how my daughter is cheering on her friends showing horses who may beat her some times but she wants them to do their
Don’t forget to reflect and don’t just reflect, reflect to change! That is the second point I like to make in my funeral services. It is not enough to recognize the error of our way; we actually have to do something about it. Make some changes this off-season. Apologize to your kids if necessary for a bad attitude. Make things right with others you have competed against. But don’t forget to reflect and reflect to change! What really matters in life? Love God and love each other! It is the great commandment. How are you doing in your relationship with God? It will affect your relationship with others. Make adjustments as needed this off-season and lets all do a better job of leading the way to a personal relationship to Jesus Christ that can be followed by others. Enjoy the harvest season! ▪ Randy Davis Lead Pastor First Assembly of God Church 1660 Findlay Road Lima, OH 45801 randy@limafirst.church limafirst.chu
293 THE SHOWTIMES
So why am I sharing all of this? Many times as a pastor I am asked to do the funeral of people whom I have never had the opportunity to meet. People ask me all the time how do you do that? Well, I have learned a few things in ministry and one of them is to use the Bible to help people in need. One of my favorite funeral scriptures is Philippians 1:9-10 9 I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding. 10 For I want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ’s return.
Now I admit the horse arena may be a little different than the cattle ring, but the lessons learned should be very similar. I hope that you will reflect on your season of showing and that as you reflect on your season of showing you will be reminded of what really matters. I think my daughter would say the times we sit outside our camper, just me and her and her friends talking, eating and laughing are some of the best times of this whole process. It is not all about ribbons and hardware. It is about relationships and learning to be a leader.
SEPT/OCT 2015
For the last 6 years I have watched my daughter gain confidence on that ole horse of hers. Last year she had 5 events and got 5 ribbons. This year she was 2 out of 4 and got 6th in the other two. She has had so much fun riding that horse and making friends. I have seen her go from the one needing lots of help with her horse and riding to the one helping others. She has gone from being lead to leading others. There is so much more to 4-H than the project.
best. At the same time she is going to go run her pattern as hard as she can and try to beat that same friend she just cheered for. She has recognized that the competition is only part of this 4H world. Are we able to see the things that really matter reflected in our kids? Or are they picking up some not so good habits of showing from us?

EUGENE ‘GENE’ RITCHEY October 3, 1928 – August 17, 2015

He was born in Brighton, CO on October 3, 1928 to Phinace and Clara (Heitman) Ritchey. He married Naomi Jo Heneger on April 3, 1960 in Brighton; together they raised three children. Gene grew up in Brighton and attended Independence School and graduated from Brighton High School in 1947 and went on to attend Colorado A&M. After attending college, Gene served in the Air National Guard from 1949-1952, and like his personality dictated, he bravely volunteered to walk ‘ground zero’ of Yucca Flats, AZ for the testing of an A-bomb detonation in the sky above him. After serving our Country, Gene returned home and worked on the family dairy. In 1964 Gene invented the Ritchey Cattle Ear Tag, one of the first tags that made it possible for individual livestock identification. That same year, Gene and his wife Jo, founded Ritchey Livestock ID and continued to develop innovative products that lead the industry still today. Gene stayed active in the family business his entire life. Over the years, the agricultural industry has recognized Gene's pioneering spirit and honored him with numerous awards and accolades. In 1989, Beef Magazine honored him as one of 25 people ‘Who Made a Difference’ in the cattle industry. Another 25 years later, Beef Magazine honored Gene again in their 50th anniversary issue as a continued industry leader. In 1996, the Colorado FFA Foundation inducted Gene into the Colorado Agriculture Hall of Fame, acknowledging his outstanding contribution to Colorado agriculture. Later, Gene was inducted into The Showtimes Magazine’s Hall of Fame. To be inducted, individuals must achieve something great, and Gene was regarded for continued technological advances in livestock identification. Gene loved to invent things and had ideas on how to improve everything. He enjoyed turkey shoots and going fishing and never refused a good piece of pie. He loved to
spend quality time with his family and truly appreciated life’s many blessings. His spirit, generosity, kindness and aspiration to make everything he touched better, inspired everyone he came in contact with. His grandkids will surely miss his legendary pancakes and homemade caramel syrup, and the world will miss his smile, but his legacy will rightly live on forever. 'Some men see things as they are and say why. I dream things that never were and say why not.’ -Edward Kennedy June 8, 1968 ▪
CODY MCCULLOUGH (DUHAIME)
Cody McCullough (Duhaime), 19, of Allerton, Iowa passed away on September 6, 2015.
Cody McCullough tragically passed in his home in Kewanee, IL. Cody was Canadian born on July 9th, 1996, to parents Keith Duhaime and Karen McCullough. He began his life on a small farm near Vawn, Saskatchewan, expressing his deep love for cattle and the outdoors at a very young age. He soon established a close relationship with his older sister. Erin and Cody were always together you could often find them playing out in the horse pasture with their miniature horses or going on long adventures in any of their make-believe forests. Once in Iowa, the home-schooled young man longed for an education beyond the books. He found his true passion in life... fitting and exhibiting show cattle across the country. He spent many long hours rinsing and working on his show calves down at the barn with Chuck and Erin. Cody would always claim that he had the best show mom in the industry. Always knowing if he needed anything he would only have to find where mom had it back at the stalls. He grew fond of the Sullivan and Rogers enterprises in Iowa, and worked for both companies. He was swift to morph from student to teacher as he pursued the honor of being a Stock Show University Professor, and clipping/fitting for some of the top names in the industry. He was also fortunate to take home several honorable national titles along the way. Following this agricultural path lead him to Blackhawk East Community College, where he was in the
process of obtaining an Agricultural Production degree. Upon graduation, he intended to begin his own herd of Maine-Anjou influenced females, while keeping his role with Sullivans and proudly wearing that professor’s jacket. Cody was driven for himself, but even more driven for others. He never met a stranger, just a friend he hadn’t met yet. His crooked cheesy smile and welcoming arms will be remembered by all of his friends. Cody will be dearly missed by his entire family, friends and the livestock industry. ▪
