SULLIVAN’S

Feminine shape and freshness in the front end of your show animal spells ultimate success or failure in the show ring today. Tried and true for many years, Fresh & FeminineTM has been the secret at Sullivan Farms for over 10 years. It has been an integral part of their feeding regiment and credited with producing outstanding freshness and ultimate show ring success of their cattle at major shows for years. The superior science of Fresh & FeminineTM features strategic vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants and by-pass protein sources. This chemistry boosts metabolic fat burning that targets specific areas of the body to reduce fat content, most notably in the neck and brisket area. As a result, your animal has a more feminine, attractive physique and even moves better. This helps to offset the results seen from aggressive, high energy show diets. All natural and fertility safe for market and breeding animals.

all is easily my favorite Season. While I am a huge advocate of anything plaid or pumpkin, it is the Fall shows, sales and plans for The Showtimes that is the whipped cream on top. After a long State Fair run and hot temperatures, the cool weather is also a welcomed change.

INGREDIENTS CROISSANTS: 1/2 C. Warm Milk 1/8 C. Warm Water 1 Egg 2 2/3 C. Strong White Bread Flour 1 tsp. Salt 2 Tbsp. Sugar 2 Tbsp. Softened Butter 2 Tsp. Easy Blend Dried Yeast 12 Tbsp. Softened Butter *Optional: Jam or Chocolate EGG WASH: 1 Egg, beatened 1 Tbsp. Milk

CROISSANTS BY LAURIE REID, SHOWTIMES

DIRECTIONS BY HAND: Put the egg, flour, salt, sugar, 1 oz butter and the yeast in a large mixing bowl. Using a wooden spoon, slowly mix in the warm milk and the warm water until the mixture forms into a pliable dough. Cover and put the dough in a warm place, until it has nearly doubled in size. BUTTER DOUGH: Place the dough (both from the bread machine and by hand) on a floured surface and knead well until it feels elastic.Return the dough to the bowl, cover and chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour. Return the chilled dough to your floured work surface and roll it into a rectangular shape, around 20” x 8”. Separate the remaining butter into 3 portions and then using one third of the butter, dot the butter over the upper two thirds of the rolled dough, keeping a 1cm/1/2” border around the edges. Fold the dough into three , bringing up the bottom unbuttered part of the dough, and then folding the top buttered part of the dough over. Give the dough a half turn so that the open edges are now top and bottom and seal the edges with your rolling pin. Then take your rolling pin and press the dough at intervals to seal the dough and create air pockets. Roll out into a rectangle again, the same size, and then continue as before, two more times until your butter is used up - please see photos as a guide. It is important to return the rolled

dough to the fridge in between each rolling to ensure the butter does not melt and the dough does not become too sticky. After the last rolling when all the butter is used, return the dough to the refrigerator to chill for a further 30 minutes. Remove from fridge and roll carefully into a big rectangle 24i”x12”, cut in half lengthways, divide each half into 4 to 6 triangles. Take one triangle at a time, and brush the triangle with the egg wash of milk and egg. (At this point, I added a tbsp. of homemade peach jam or a small piece of chocolate to the widest part of the triangle). Then from the widest edge of the triangle, roll up loosely and place in a crescent shape on a tray. Brush with the egg wash over the top for the glaze. TO FREEZE: At this point the croissants can be frozen; Open freeze them on a large tray, a baking tray is fine and then pack them into a rigid container or freezer bags when they are frozen. For use, remove from freezer the number required for breakfast, put onto baking tray and leave overnight. Put into a hot oven and cook for about 20 minutes until browned and risen. TO BAKE: Place the shaped croissants on baking trays lined with silicone baking parchment and leave to rise for 30 minutes to 1 hour.Bake for 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown and puffy. •

GOD’S INSTRUCTION MANUAL

HONOR AND BRING GLORY TO GOD IN ALL YOU DO. BY BOB AND JENNIFER BRUNS, TX

From the time we are young, we are told to follow instructions. Brush your teeth or you’ll get a cavity. Don’t run with scissors. Don’t touch a hot stove or you’ll get burned. Wear a coat when its cold outside or you’ll get sick. It’s easy to see that if we don’t follow the guidance of our parents, there can be consequences to our actions. Of course, some children still don’t listen. That doesn’t make them bad kids. Some just have to learn the hard way. As we grow into adults, we still make mistakes, although some of the consequences might not be quite so obvious at first. We sometimes decide to pick and choose what parts of the Bible to listen to. In our young minds, we think that the world is changing and our standards should change with it. We justify our actions by telling ourselves that the words printed so many years ago don’t apply the way they did back then. How could we be so wrong? It takes us learning the hard way to see the reasoning behind the teachings. God doesn’t want us to get “burned” learning life lessons, but sometimes that is the only

way. We feel like life is hard, and if it just came with instructions, it would sure be a lot easier. Well, it does. If we would open the Bible and trust that the words are true, instead of thinking we know it all, we would be so much better off. The Bible tells us in Proverbs 3:5-12 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. 8 This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones. 9 Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; 10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine. 11 My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, 12 because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in. Unfortunately, it seems like so many times, we pray harder and look to the Bible when things go wrong in our lives. If we would’ve taken it slow and followed the instructions that were given to us in the first place, we wouldn’t have to tear it apart and put it back together again. Paul writes in Ephesians 5:15 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. The more you study and apply God’s word to your life, the fewer messes you’ll make out of things. God doesn’t promise an easy life, but if we bring honor and glory to Him in all that we do, we will avoid causing ourselves and others unnecessary pain. Whether you’re assembling a grill, or deciding which path to take in life, its always easier if you follow the instructions and get it right the first time. •

THE SHOWTIMES / SEPT/OCT 2018

o, there we were, unpacking the new gas grill out of the box after making a special trip to Lowes to take advantage of the big Father’s Day Sale they were having. I’d been fighting the old one and trying to get by with only one side that would light, but the flames would shoot a foot in the air out of the now huge openings that were once little pin holes. I was excited to say the least. Bob had all of the parts spread out and opened all across the back patio. About halfway through the process, we had to take it apart and start all over, this time using the instruction manual because the first attempt was unsuccessful.

THE JOURNEY BECCA MOORE SHARES HER STORY!

I was that kid standing ring side wondering where life would take me and if I was going to get to experience the maroon jacket. For us, my brothers and I, it all started at home where our father shared his love for cattle with each of us. Ethan, the oldest, began his journey and developed a love for cattle just as powerful as our fathers. From there it spread like wildfire. Our week nights turned into evenings at the barn and our weekends were then filled with any and every cattle show. The Buck family became our second family and then before long the Maine-Anjou

family became our greatest blessing. Through our journey I have learned many different life lessons. First off, no one can do it alone. We had an army, and I am not just talking about the six of us Moore kids. Second, you learn that it is important to listen. I cannot tell you how many coaching sessions or “team meetings” we had over the years. Third, it takes hard work to be in this industry and become successful. It was not just the hard work of the exhibitor, but the whole family, show crew, and every other person behind the scenes. Last but not least, the journey is fun. In all the hard work and the hustle and bustle we all still found time to joke and laugh together. Ever since the beginning we have had an army working behind each of us Moore kids. If it was not our dad there, it was Jirl Buck. The times our mom needed an extra hand, Brenda Buck was right there putting us all in line. Bailey Buck was the first sister I had ever had. With our two crews working together, everything ran just as good as a well oiled machine. Through the years we have added more people to our show family and have seen some really great friends go off on their own incredible journeys. Each of the families or people placed in our lives along the way played a small part in the big picture of my brothers and my show career. We were lucky enough to grow up in the Maine-Anjou family and then later in our careers be welcomed with open arms to the Hereford family as well. It is

icture a 7-year-old kid standing beside the show ring watching a group of young men and women walking around the show ring wearing a maroon jacket. What do you think that child is thinking? Probably something along the lines of, “Man, I can not wait to wear one of those jackets.”. Wondering what path our show careers will take is something every child dreams of, but once our show careers are over, we all look back and think about all the great times, the rough times, and even the moments that were more of a life lesson than anything else. My name is Becca Moore and I am going to fill in all the blanks between the beginning and the bitter sweet ending of one of the most amazing journeys a child can embark on, a livestock show career.

not always just the people, but the cattle become apart of our family too. If you are reading this and you are new to our world, just wait and see because these associations and the family that you will join will amaze you and change your life for the better.

Over the years we think we get to where we know everything, but of course there will be those people there to remind you that you do not. Listen to them, because they will teach you more than you believe. My brothers and I had some extraordinary teachers within this industry. Between our father, Jirl Buck, the Maine-Anjou and Hereford family, and the whole crew through the years, we have been coached, pushed, and corrected constantly. Without the lessons and the team meetings, the older generations are not able to pass down what they learned from their experience. Listen to them, even when it is not as easy, because the lessons learned will help form and shape your show career for the better. Not to mention the lessons learned may help someday when you are teaching them yourselves. Winning is not everything, but it is fun to experience and achieve such high honors. Through the years it has taken a lot of hard work for my family to achieve the honor of joining the champion circle. None of it was done alone. The work does not happen at the show, it begins at home in your barn. I can remember back to being a young girl and everyone spending their Saturday and Sunday mornings at the barn putting the cattle up. Just to return that evening to feed and turn out. The water fights, the laughs, the fights that took place were just a bonus to the work. Everyone’s opinion mattered when it came to checking up on the progress of each of the show heifers. Our father, Jirl Buck and Matt Scasta were always around giving extra advice on what needed to be fed what or how we needed to work their hair

extra special to get it to grow before the big show. Without the hard work put in and the help and encouragement for everyone around, our family would not have been able to achieve as much as we have during each of the six of our show careers.

In the end, the journey made will last a lifetime. Our livestock showing careers have been extraordinary and the families and friends made throughout it are the icing on the cake. Many times we forget to remember the big dreams that we had as a young child, and to think that those dreams actually came true is astonishing. Getting the opportunity to be the teacher and not the student in showmanship or even my brothers being the ones to teach young dreamers how to run some clippers is a sight to see. Overall, I am thankful for my family and the people that have stood behind us throughout the journey of each of our show careers. For now, the pictures will help remind us of all the good times that we had throughout the last twenty years of growing, learning, and laughing together within one of the greatest industries. •

THE SHOWTIMES / SEPT/OCT 2018

Showing cattle may be a lot of work, but the fun you have will out weigh the work. This life is busy and can get a little stressful at moments, but there is always time for laughter. I can remember after every big Junior Nationals, we would end the show with a huge water fight. The whole barn would join in to celebrate the ending to a great week. The friends each of us Moore kids have made over the years will easily last a lifetime. One of my own personal favorite memories is when I had the opportunity to wear the great maroon jacket along-side Bailey. Friends are a big piece to the puzzle that make this industry so special. It may get to where you only get to see your livestock friends at national shows, such as Denver or Fort Worth, but it is always something for each of us to look forward too.

SEPT/OCT 2018 / THE SHOWTIMES

Well dad gum it I barely had time to catch my breath, get my laundry done, put it back in the suitcase, tank up on diesel, mow the yard, and hit the road running for the fall tour! The days and weeks sure seem to speed by anymore, not much time to enjoy some of the things I love the most (family first), working with the granddaughters, cattle projects and of course eating. I’ve picked some places to share this time that are sure enough hole in the wall type places that serve up some of my all-time favorite selections while enjoying my time on the road. I’m going to start off close to home with “The Garage Burgers and Beer.” The midtown location in Oklahoma City is my favorite. This little place has something for everybody, but most importantly, is the fresh cut fries. Now that one item goes a long way with me when it comes time to eat. Being famous for their hamburgers is one thing, but the variety on the menu is nothing short of awesome! From the burgers, bacon cheese fries, queso fries, tacos, nachos and salads, this place can please the pallet of the pickiest diner. They even have a small arcade to help occupy the kiddos while you wait for your selections to be prepared.

Heading north out of OKC I’m making a pit stop in Kansas City and it’s not Strouds? I know it’s hard not to make that place the first stop in KC, but I have to spread myself around just a little (I’ll make plenty of visit’s there). This time I’m taking you to a little place that has some of the best fish (Basa) in the state of Missouri, and that would be Lutfi’s. I’m thinking if you looked in the dictionary for hole in the wall, this place would be the description. I do like fried fish - and good fried fish is hard to find - but they fill the bill for it here. Nothing fancy at all, just plain good food! Lutfi’s is a little out of the way, but it’s closer than City Fish if you’re staying on the Missouri side of I-35. To me, this is some real comfort food. The fried fish and smoked chicken wings are a pleasant relief from the typical stock show selections

that you encounter at every stock show in the country. My next stop is a little east of Kansas City and that would be Louisville, KY. I’m always game when it comes to trying new places especially when it comes to hamburgers and chicken. Blue Grass Burgers has both! I must say I was pleasantly pleased with the food and service here. This place even has sweet potato fries for the people that don’t know any better (my wife included in this group). They do have my favorite fresh cut spuds on the menu as well. This place is a little unique with the help yourself, dress your own bar with all the veggies and sauces you can imagine to top your burger the way you want it. The chicken at this place is very moist and juicy which is hard to find - especially at a hamburger joint of all places! I do say the offerings here seemed to have a really fresh and tasty quality that you don’t get at just any place. The prices are also very stock show friendly. The last stop on my Fall tour is in the state of Pennsylvania. I was introduced to this place several years ago by Luke McDonnell - and boy did he do good! If I have the opportunity to go to Harrisburg for any reason, The Glass Lounge is the place to dine. I make it a point to eat here if I’m in the state of Pennsylvania. Much like the Iowa Beef Steakhouse in Des Moines, if I’m in Iowa that’s the go to place. You can’t go wrong, and I’ve never been disappointed at The Glass Lounge. Now looks can be deceiving, but this is the bomb when it comes to steaks! The quality and quantity here are unmatched. This place has one of the best steaks in the country, not to mention the flaky baked potato and meal sized salad to start things off. The atmosphere just adds icing to the cake for me. I’m still disappointed with NJSA for moving the northeast regional out of Harrisburg! I think once again I’ve shared enough, but please keep in mind why we do what we do and make some good memories and friends along the way. Don’t forget to check the Showtimes APP for other places of fine dining. ‘Til next time, safe travels. •

POPCORN CAKE BY SHIRLEY DERRYBERRY, OK

SEPT/OCT 2018 / THE SHOWTIMES

This recipe is one I got from my brother-in-law Rick. I like to make this at Christmas with red and green gumdrops. If you use the multi-colored gumdrops remove the spice ones. You can make them in mini-loaves or balls and wrap in colored plastic wrap for a really cute gift. •

74

INGREDIENTS 1 1/4 C. Unpopped Corn 2 (10oz.) pkgs. Gum Drops 2 (16oz.) pkgs. Miniature Marshmallows 1 Can Cocktail Peanuts 2 Sticks Oleo

DIRECTIONS Pop corn and put into large pan for mixing. Cut up gum drops (do not use black or white ones). Mix with corn. Add peanuts. Melt butter and marshmallows together. Add to corn mixture. Spray hands with Pam and mix. Put into tube pans and press firmly. Let set and slice as ready to use. Cakes will come out the pan easier if pan is sprayed with pam or line with plastic wrap. •

BY BRAELYN BERLOWITZ

I am very active in my school and community. I am involved in Student Council, National Honors Society, play basketball, run track, run cross country, and attend Oak Grove Baptist Church. It always seems that there is a season for everything, but at our house show season is year round. Somehow, I am able to find time to fit all of these things into my schedule. It’s not easy, but I make it work. I have been a starter on the varsity basketball team ever since I was a freshman. Practices start at 6:30 in the morning. There have been countless numbers of times when I have to fly out from Denver, or Kansas City, at midnight, so I can make it to basketball practice at 6 o’clock the next morning. I start my day early and end my day late, because I come home and go straight to the barn. I find a way to make time for everything, even if it means saying no to a party that everyone is going to. I don’t know how many times the words “Sorry I’m in the barn”, or “I can’t, I have to do chores” have came out of my mouth. I couldn’t do what I love without my family. My parents are Jason and Melanie Berlowitz. I have twin brothers, Blaze and Brody. I am so thankful that my parents have raised my siblings and I in this industry. I’m so proud to be able to share this passion with the people I love. My brothers and I have had some of our biggest fights in the barn. Some of the worst fights are over what you’re the most passionate about. We both stood so stubborn in our own opinions when it came to the animals that we loved. But, through it all, we learned how to forgive. We learned how to cooperate

THE SHOWTIMES / SEPT/OCT 2018

“As long as you’ve got passion, faith, family, and are willing to work hard, you can do anything you want in this life”. This is one of my favorite quotes and it’s so true, especially when it comes to showing cattle. The cattle industry is something I am very passionate about. I have been around the livestock industry my whole life. I started showing cattle when I was 10.

I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for this industry. I’ve met some of my greatest friends at shows. Showing cattle has taught me many life lessons. I’ve learned how to win and how to lose. I’ve learned hard work, patience, and responsibility. Some of my greatest memories were made in the barn. There’s been lots of hugs after wins. It is safe to say some of my worst memories were made in the barn too. I’ve watched life begin and end in the barn. I’ve learned that sometimes we lose our animals to things we can’t control. I’ve learned patience and responsibility. I’ve learned that hard work pays off. I’ve learned how to win humbly and lose gracefully. I’ve grown to understand the process of life. As my senior year is flying by, I have to start thinking about my future. My dream would be to attend Oklahoma State University or Texas A&M. I plan to major in something to do with agriculture, I just don’t know exactly what yet.

and listen to each other’s opinions, because our families are the ones who stand by us. Whether it’s at home in the barn working hair, or at the dining room table helping you with homework because you missed class for that jackpot show. They are my cheerleaders and support staff.

What I do know is, I will still be hitting all of the jackpot and national shows throughout college. There is no doubt that I’m addicted to this lifestyle. Showing cattle has made me a better leader, a better friend, and a better person. I enjoy this lifestyle. It’s in my blood and there is no doubt this industry will teach you more about life than any other. I spend ninety-nine percent of my time in the barn or in the pasture. This is my life and I wouldn’t want it any other way. I believe with all my heart that the people in the livestock industry are the best people you will ever meet. •

REFLECTING ON A SUCCESSFUL STATE FAIR! i, my name is Adam Miller, and I am 13 years old. Currently I am an eighth grader at El Paso Gridley Jr. High School in Gridley, Illinois, where I play basketball and run track. I am a fourth-generation angus breeder, and my family runs Prairie View Farm (PVF), a cow calf operation where we sell high quality Angus show heifers, bulls and embryos. I have been in the cattle business since I was born and hope to never stop. In the future, I plan to attend a junior college and then study animal science maybe at the University of Illinois. I grew up going to local, state and national shows with my family, and dreamed of showing one day. My first calf was a heifer named Silly, who I showed when I was six years old at my county fair. I’ve always looked up to my uncle, Brandon Jones, who owns a steer business. So the following year I tried showing a steer, and fell in love with it. In the past, I have been fortunate enough to have the Grand Champion Steer at the National Junior Angus Show in 2016, 2017, and this past year in 2018, with an Angus steer named Queso. I was also blessed enough to win the Grand Champion Land of Lincoln Steer with an Angus steer at the Illinois State Fair in 2016, and 2017. This past State Fair was unbelievable when my crossbred steer, Taco, won Grand Champion Overall Steer. I could not believe what had happened and was overjoyed with the victory. Throughout the entire show, my stomach did flips while my heart was jumping in and out of my chest, my entire body drenched in sweat. I was so stressed the entire time. Even watching videos of the Grand Drive now makes my heart start to race.

Illinois State Fair

My love for the cattle industry runs deeper than just showing. I started fitting cattle when I was eight and have been on our Illinois fitting team at Angus Junior Nationals for the past three years. I have also had champion fitting team at Illinois Beef Expo multiple times. When we attend shows, I am always anxious for heifer show day, because I know that it means that I get to spend the day at the chutes. Matthew 23:12 says, “And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” Showing and fitting cattle has taught me so much about staying humble and thanking God and those around me for all of my success. In the end, I am so appreciative of all of my past success. My accomplishment from this past State Fair especially has taught me so much and it will always be in my heart. As a short-term goal, I hope to travel to many shows, meet new people and be on the National Junior Angus Board of Directors. As a long-term goal, I hope to graduate college and take over my dad’s farm. In the end, I am looking forward to the future to see what will happen for me in this incredible industry. •

THE SHOWTIMES / SEPT/OCT 2018

Since I’ve been showing, there have been a huge number of people who helped me prepare for show days. I would like to especially thank our PVF crew Will Coor and Kyle Chrislaw. I would also like to thank everyone on the Jones Show Cattle, John Choate, and Caldwell Show Cattle crews. However, most of all I would like to thank my family who was always there to lend a hand or help me out as much as possible, and everyone who had a part in buying or raising my Grand Champion Steer.

THE ONE

THE HARDER YOU WORK FOR SOMETHING, THE GREATER YOU FEEL WHEN YOU ACHIEVE IT! y family an I are from Piasa, IL. You can drive through town in a blink of an eye. We farm and raise cattle. We are blessed with a huge loving family. When my sisters Kaci, Ashley and I were just starting out, our show career we showed Nubian goats at the Jersey County Fair. As time went on, we got into this “cow show” thing, and I must say we fell in love with it. I remember at an early age our dad asking us what kind of cattle we wanted to show. Ashley answered with Charolais, and I answered “a good one.” He still gets a kick out of it today, but sure enough that man tried to give us it all. I cannot say it enough that my father is the most selfless man I know and he would do just about anything for our family, or anyone else for that matter. Every fall he would put aside harvest for a few days so us girls and him could go searching for our top picks at cattle sales all over the surrounding states. As time went on, we grew very fond of going to Dunlap, IA to Sullivan’s looking for “the one.” The Sullivan crew got the idea that we were serious about this and we were willing to give it our all. That’s when one of the best guys in the industry, Josh Elder came into play. He told us this past fall he had one for us. We made a trip out to go look at her and we fell in love and purchased the Broker Low-Simmental calf. Early mornings and late nights were the only thing Ashley and I knew this summer. It took a lot of self-discipline and dedication. My heifer and I were a perfect match. She would do everything I asked her to when working with her this summer. Come show day at the Illinois State Fair, she didn’t disappoint, and we worked well together that day in the ring. Getting the slap on Friday night and being in the top 5, let alone Supreme Heifer meant the world to me. Never in my life did I think I could pull off something like that! It is a moment I will never forget. The love I received exiting the ring was everything! As tears of joy ran down my face, I couldn’t help but think of how blessed I am! It has been a long time coming, and it’s a very humble feeling that a family like mine could win this title. They say the hard work will pay off and it sure did. The harder you work for something, the greater you feel when you achieve it! •

ENCORE FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO WIN.

y name is Ella Bobell, from Lincoln, IL. I am 12 years old and a 7th grader at Mt. Pulaski Grade School. My favorite thing in the world is showing pigs. Ever since my first show at the age of three; I have been hooked. It is a thrill to get new show barrows in the barn every spring. Our family spends hours working with them, walking them, cleaning pens; and every hour pays off in the end when you walk in the show ring and your pig’s skin and hair look on point and they walk amazing. Win, or lose; the hard work at home is all worth it. Occasionally, we are fortunate enough to win. Some of our proudest moments in the show ring include Champion Cross Gilt and Reserve Grand Champion Barrow at 2016 World Pork Expo, Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Barrow at the 2016 Team Purebred National Junior Show, Reserve Grand Champion Barrow at 2018 National Junior Summer Spectacular, and Grand Champion Barrow at 2018 Illinois State Fair. Winning Grand Champion at the Illinois State Fair Barrow Show has been on our families bucket list way before I was even born. The Barrow I showed this year was a crossbred from Soileau Farms, in Louisiana. His name was Encore, the last barrow we will ever show out of the boar, Best Man.

When asked what my favorite thing is about showing pigs; the answer is easy... all of the people I meet!! When we attend the national pig shows, we get to meet other

kids from all over the Country and hang out for the week. This is where lifelong friends are made! My favorite experience though; has to be from this year’s Illinois State Fair. When you are fortunate enough to exhibit a Grand Champion at IL State Fair; your barrow is exhibited in the Hall of Champions for the remaining week of the Fair along with all of the other Grand Champions and sells in the Governor’s Sale of Champions. It was an amazing experience getting to meet families that exhibited the other species. My favorite things outside the show ring include playing volleyball, basketball, and hanging out with friends and family. •

BEYOND THE BACKDROP

DESTINY SAVING THE BEST FOR LAST.

i everyone, I’m Chloe Van Vliet a college basketball player, cattle enthusiast and the exhibitor of the Supreme Champion Heifer at the 2018 Iowa State Fair. I was born and raised in Pella, Iowa as a third-generation farm family. My family owns and operates Blueprint Cattle Company, which has raised purebred Maine-Anjou cattle for 35 years. We proudly raise 80 to 100 head each year. The great adventures of showing cattle has taken my family all over the state of Iowa for jackpot shows to Nebraska for Aksarben and around the rest of the country for the American Royal, Louisville, Denver and of course wherever the great Maine Jr. Nationals were each year. The show cattle industry has been a wonderful family time for me and my parents, Marty and Teresa, and my twin brother Cade. Those times have presented many memories that I will cherish forever. I’m not sure there is anything quite like the feeling of the emphasis slap or dramatic point of a prize-winning heifer. It is then when all the hours and hours of work finally pay off. When my parents were planning to have children, they were expecting one child and somehow ended up with two student athletes with a love for the cattle industry. Growing up all these years on a farm with Cade, who was born one minute after me, I have experienced some pretty cool things within this “extreme” sport of cattle showing, as some would call it. Our family shares a true love of the cattle industry as my dad is hand’s on and my mom has always been the behind-the-scenes support. As a cattle exhibitor and a club basketball player since the age of 12, I have never been one to really shy away from hard work. My first opportunity to exhibit was, ironically, at the Iowa State Fair in the Open Maine-Anjou show at the age of 5. I have been

My inner competitor has surfaced because of showing livestock. Sportsmanship is taught through tough competition, yet a friendly environment. An exhibitor learns how to be a humble winner as well as a gracious loser. My dad has always taught us, “No crying or being mad.” The same commitment holds true on the basketball court while becoming a skilled point guard that your team depends on each week. You learn to laugh at yourself when you mess up in the 4th quarter of a close game or when things don’t go well in the show ring. The two together have taught me to believe in team work and serve as a role model to make a difference. Some may say I was destine to show my heifer this year,

Reba. Raised in Oklahoma by the Moonen family she made her way to the great state of Iowa. To my benefit, her first home decided to split ways with her. In November she was offered as tag 32 on the Divas and Donors sale. 32, is my basketball number…tell me that’s not destiny. Charlie Wilson, a close family friend called my dad and told him she was one we needed to show. My dad made the trip to Dixon, IL for the sale and agreed she had true potential. I know that the stars aligned that day and it was true destiny that Reba “The Reject,” tag 32, came to be a part of my final journey as a junior showman. She is true proof that sometimes, you do save the best for last. Her winning record includes winning the calf division in Denver 2018, Reserve Grand Champion at the Iowa Beef Expo in February, Champion Heifer at the Iowa State AGR, Supreme Female in 3 rings in Chillicothe, as well as the Reserve National Champion this summer in Grand Island at the National Junior Heifer show. Although my college basketball career is taking off, my cattle journey has come to an end. Reba’s future looks bright this fall as Cade prepares to take over as the exhibitor at The American Royal, The North American International Livestock Exhibition and the National Western Livestock Show in Denver. I can’t wait to cheer them on from home with a basketball in my hand.

hooked ever since. I have shown in the 4-H heifer show for nine years at the Iowa State Fair, the Maine-Anjou Junior Nationals for twelve years, and multiple national cattle shows from a young age. The show industry is more and more competitive each year in the regional and national arenas. As I grew up exhibiting and caring for cattle, my passion for the cattle industry gained momentum. Not every year involved a “great one” but the chase for a chance at a coveted banner always kept us coming back for more, especially at the Iowa State Fair. I personally am always counting down the days until, “The Best Time of the Year!,” the Iowa State Fair.

Iowa State Fair

My decision to play basketball at the collegiate level at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is one I am extremely excited about though it meant ending my junior showing career. Winning the Iowa State Fair was truly the icing on the cake for me and a perfect close to what has been an amazing journey. My future goals include majoring in biology/neuroscience with the plan of medical school and becoming an orthopedic surgeon or radiologist. I look forward to the many athletic and academic opportunities that Coe College presents itself with.

Although my final time entering the Pioneer Pavilion has come, I cannot be more blessed to have been a part of this agricultural world and the huge family of life-long cattle friends I have obtained. People aren’t kidding when they tell you time flies, because before you know it, it will be over in a blink of an eye. My advice for all younger showmen out there is to forget all the reasons why it won’t work and believe in the reason why it will and you, too, could end up with a grand champion banner hanging in your barn. •

Showing cattle has completely shaped my life. I will carry the values and lessons I have learned in and out of

THE SHOWTIMES / SEPT/OCT 2018

The moment I won was special for our entire family. Cade and I have been involved with cattle our entire lives and while we have been fortunate to have other success, this was the first time we won the Iowa State Fair Breeding Heifer show and is something that we have always dreamed about accomplishing.

the show ring with me forever. Even though I am not choosing a career in agriculture and will no longer be showing, I have learned how to compete with the best of the best and how to adhere to a hectic schedule yet meet the demands of caring for livestock and never miss a beat. Some of the best memories I have made aren’t always inside the show ring but rather at home working in the barn with Cade, loading the trailer in preparation for the show or in the truck chasing white lines to the next show. Showing has truly brought my family closer together. We have spent hours upon hours traveling in a truck for hundreds of miles with plenty of time to talk about anything and everything. Family and friends are the most important people in your life. Without the love, support, and help of my parents and Cade, Charlie Wilson, Deven King, Colton Shull, Sumner Mapes, and the Paulsen Family, this journey with Reba would not have been possible. I am forever grateful for this group I call family.

The 2018 Iowa State Fair Heifer Show would be my last. I can’t say that I have ever been as nervous as I was before walking into Pioneer Pavilion for the first time that great day. The judge’s Top 5 are purely subjective, but I knew in my heart Reba had a shot at winning. When the slap occurred, it was dream-like for me and the joy I felt is indescribable. That day, shared with family and friends, was up there with one of the best days of my life thus far. It was also very special because my future college basketball coaches were present to embrace the moment with us as I closed this showing chapter of my life.

TWO GRANDS THE RICHARDSON FAMILY PULLED OF WINNING BOTH GRAND CHAMPION HOG AND STEER IN PUEBLO IN THE SAME YEAR! THEY EACH REFLECT ON THEIR BIG WINS!

At high school I participate in many activities. I’m involved in volleyball, basketball, track & field, livestock judging, FBLA, and FFA. I enjoy sports, getting to hang out with my friends and all; however, showing comes above all on my list. It’s definitely my passion and what I love doing most. Any time or any day I’d rather be out working on the farm. At the beginning of any season, I love going up to my coaches and letting them

Exhibiting and working with livestock, teaches you so much. I can’t even begin to tell you how much I’ve learned. It gives you responsibilities and teaches you how to work. It lets you know how to take a loss and be humble about a win. It ingrains in you how to be appreciative and thankful for what you have and to also work for what you don’t. All of this simply betters you as an individual and sets you on the right track forever. There is 100% no other place I’d rather be than in the show industry. Our biggest accomplishment our family has achieved before this one was probably last year at the state fair when my brother, Nash, received Reserve Grand Champion Hog. After that I thought it might be the best we’ll ever do, but I wasn’t quite settled with just reserve when we were that close to the top. The achievement made me want to do even better. My family and I show cattle and pigs at a few jackpots throughout the spring and summer. Then, we’ll

show them in August at the county and/or state levels. Also, we’ll get a couple fat steers to take up to Denver in January. I’ve always seen and talked to the winning show families and thought, gosh I wonder what it’d feel like to win this or that show. And this state fair for sure gave me that feeling. When I was crowned grand hog, I was extremely happy and in disbelief. Nothing was going through my head besides what am I going to do and how did Allen (my pig) and I just win. That was for sure the best day of my life until a couple days later when my family received the honors of exhibiting the grand steer as well; then that was the best day of my life. I would like to congratulate all the other exhibitors for their hard work and dedication, and thank everyone who has helped my family and me along the way. There’s no better people to meet or friends to make than in this industry. I wish the best of luck to everyone in the future, and I’m beyond grateful for this experience. Thank you. •

i my name is Nash Richardson. I am in 8th grade and play basketball, football and track. I show steers and pigs. This year we have ad a pretty successful year. For myself, I won Grand Champion Steer as well as Champion Intermediate Showman with my hog at the Colorado State Fair. My older sister Ema got Grand Champion Hog at county fair and also Champion Hog and Steer Showman. At state she won Grand Champion Hog with the same pig she won the Yuma County Fair with. My older brother Riley got Grand Champion Steer with a locally raised calf at county fair, as well as Champion Senior Showman with his steer at state fair. It was special because it was his last year showing. MY twin sister Lea won Reserve Champion Hog at county fair. State Fair was very special this year getting Grand Champion in two species in the same year! For us, it is a big accomplishment showing and seeing all of our hard work pay off. We got up at 5:30AM every morning. Me and my twin sister only got started showing steers 2 years ago. We were super excited to start because we watched our older siblings and figured we wanted to try it out, knowing we

had them to teach us along the way. My first year of showing steers I just had a homegrown calf that I picked out of our own herd named JD “John Deere” and I won the homegrown show with him at the county fair. My second year, I had a Charolais steer that was a locally raised calf named Carlos. Then there was this year that I got my steer from Wade Rodgers out of Iowa that we named Daniel. We took him to a couple of jackpots along the way including Syracuse and Green and Gold before the big show. Last year at the Colorado State Fair I had the Reserve Champion Hog and we were so proud and happy then, but then came this year. We came out even happier than the year before. Overall, I would say we had a pretty good showing season and by far our best one yet! •

We have had an unbelievable Summer! I’m not sure if you call it luck, skill, hard work, or pure determination, but I believe it is mostly a little of each. Whatever it is, we will count our blessings. I will give y’all a run down on kind of how we operate around here. We farm primarily, mostly irrigated, and we are shorthanded all the time. We also have 100 head of clubby cows, and run between 200 and 2000 cows/short yearlings outside on after feed/rye pasture. Priority comes with the farm first. It is what pays our bills. So if we are busy with harvest or planting or sprinklers are broke down, the kids are asked to fill in. All four kids can drive any tractor, pickup, and can navigate to all the circles, fix fence, put cattle in, or feed. Boys run the big tractors, combines, or trucks, while girls will fill in on a grain cart, help move equipment or help me with duties in the office. Showing livestock has always been a dream and challenge for myself. Connie and I feel that raising kids in the show world has many benefits. To me, the families that we have showed against, and the other people that are involved with the livestock industry are the salt of the earth. There’s no better way to raise kids in an environment that will connect them with the rest of their lives. The responsibilities the kids have had to learn, and the physical hard work has and will pay off when my kids are thinking about college, and starting their own families and careers.

We started with bucket calves with the kids early, and Riley even showed one the next year as a fat steer. However, with the farm and its duties, I realized that showing steers on a competitive level was never going to happen until the kids got older to do it themselves. So off to pig sales we went in the spring of 2012. I had no idea what was a trendy pig at the time. Scott Dean gave me his top list of what he liked in his barn, and you might say the rest is history. We have meet a lot of great people in the show pig world, and have some valuable connections that have taken time and money to build the trust. We got back into steers around 2015, when Riley was finally able to drive. Levi and Russell Zwirn have been our constant go-to guys, and help along this journey. Levi has taught the kids how to clip and fit a calf to a whole new level. We have some great connections in Iowa with Wade Rodgers and his crew and family, along with Ty Webster which I guess you would call a Missourian now. The road has been bumpy along the way. Last year the kids watched a steer die in their hands while they were trying to pull some bloat off. That was a tough one. I felt guilty because my phone was left in the combine the night before and they could not get ahold of me to help them. Naturally it was probably our best steer. But we have had some limited success up until this point. Ema was able to walk a 2nd place steer in Denver on the carpet two years ago, and had grand champion that year also at county. Most of the luck has been in the pig barn. We have won county a couple times, which is no small feat, Yuma is the second toughest county in the state following Weld county. Last year Nash won Reserve Champ with his hog which was a surprise and a half at Colorado State fair. Riley now a sophomore in NJC has never won a champion, until this year. Riley has been stuck doing most of the heavy work and all of the driving, so it was a great feeling as a parent to see him finish his show career with some purple and buckles, and most of all to give him some confidence. As a parent the hardest thing to do in my opinion is to make it fair between siblings, and to keep putting livestock

y family would like to thank Showtime’s for the opportunity to share our story. We can’t wait to open The Showtimes Magazine when we see it come through the mail. I especially enjoy watching the kids read through it, and recognizing kids that they have seen before or showed against. in front of my kids that they can be competitive with. ITS HARD!!! Connie helps me with finding strategy when we have our pig draft at the end of June. We try to give the oldest kid priority, due to the fact that they have less showing days in their career. We typically buy 20-24 pigs ranging from 4 pures to balance crosses. We stage the crosses on age for county then smaller/younger ones going to state. Riley picks first on first round then Ema first on second then usually fight to see if its Lea or Nash on third round. It NEVER works out. Pigs are either sick or won’t grow, or little ones grow too fast, or Lea who normally picks for cuteness will beat Riley who has strategized to find the best one in the barn. We have had a lot of fun and fights in the barn come draft night. The steers are usually a little more predictable on who is showing what steer. At the end of the day, I try to remind the kids that we are showing as a family, but rarely is seen that way in their eyes. Ha!

152

This Summer was one for the history books for our family. Riley won grand steer in Yuma, Ema won Grand hog and showman in Yuma, Lea won Reserve hog in Yuma. Nash

won showman in hogs at state and Grand Steer, and Ema won grand hog at state, and Riley won showman with steers at state. Not sure if I can describe how it felt to win two species at CSF. Mostly I’m very happy for the kids. They work every day after school is let out in the Spring from 5:30am to turn out; sometimes that won’t be until 10:30 at night when it’s cool enough. I know all the other families are working just as hard too. We need to remain very humble, because it may or may not ever happen again. The competition is tough, and everything has to be exactly perfect on that one day, for that one man’s opinion. So many variables lie in front of a champion. The same show on the next day can yield a totally different outcome. We try to surround ourselves with good people and with God’s Grace and a lot of luck and some hard work with a bit of an eye for livestock, the kids got it done this year. I am very proud of each of them. • Ruben

y name is Riley Richardson and I am the oldest of four kids. I have been showing livestock since the age of eight. I started showing just strictly cattle when I was 8 years old when I could join 4-H. Since then I started showing pigs and also showed sheep for one year. I am currently attending Northeastern Junior college and I am judging livestock. Me personally I love the cattle industry more than any other. This year at state fair it was my very last year showing. I had one steer and only two pigs. I however, did not have the best fair, but for me it’s not an individual thing. We as a family are in this together. So being able to win two showmanships and two grand champion market animals is a dream come true. Waking up at 5:15 every morning all summer long finally payed off. •

i my name is Lea Richardson and I am in 8th grate at Yuma Middle School. I play basketball, volleyball and track; my favorite is basketball. My class consists of about 80 kids in which most of them play sports. In my grade only two other families go to the Colorado State Fair, so not many people know how big of an accomplishment it was to win two Grand Champions. Well, except for the teachers. Winning steers and pigs was the best two days of my life. It’s an amazing feeling when all of your work has paid off. Even though it wasn’t me who showed one of the two animals, I was still as excited for Nash and Ema. Ema showed the hog and Nash showed the steer. Thank you to all of the people that helped make this dream come true. Especially to my my parents Ruben, Tina and Connie Richardson. •

DREAM BIG ALLYSON REMEMBERS WINNING GRAND CHAMPION LAMB IN PUEBLO!

ow, what a dream. Banners, buckles, and trophies are fun to win, but the miles put in to earn them are where the memories lie. Eight years ago my journey began with two sheep, no prior experience, and a goal to have fun. Fast forward to spring break 2018 and flying on a plane for the first time without our parents. We landed in Iowa, and for a week Chloe and I got to spend our time with Miss Nancy and Tanner Hild. Life of the Hild farm is so fun with Zeek chasing Rocket, ewes lambing and extreme card games we managed to survive the week and bring two unique sheep back home to Colorado. We put in a lot of miles this spring and summer showing at jackpots in Colorado, Kansas, and Utah. Going into the state fair, the only goal I had was to make the sale. By the heavyweight drive, I was so nervous having won two classes back to back. Shaking Mr. Koun’s hand with the grand heavy weight was nerve-racking and so unexpected, my only reaction was to start crying because I made it this far with only the assistance from my family. When my other sheep went reserve I just couldn’t believe it, what a dream. The grand drive came around, and I was unusually anxious. Walking into the ring all my fears and concerns went away. Scratch and I were walking on air! After the judge put down the mic and gave me the grand champion slap I was overcome with so much pride and happiness. It still feels like a dream, replaying in my head. As I get older my years to show in 4-H are dwindling faster than I would like to admit. Helping fellow 4-H members become better at what they love to do is where my heart lies. I love helping at 4-H clinics and the annual Charmasson lamb camp we host. I wish nothing more than for my friends and family to have the same opportunity to be successful. Not only do I help my friends and family become better but, they push me to be better every year. Over the years I have never been given handouts, I started from the bottom, and every year I grow and learn. I want to thank my parents Mitch and Angie, and my sisters Chloe and Olivia for helping me reach this tremendous goal. Also the Hild family for all their support. The countless friends in my adopted show family for riding on this crazy train and all the new friends that we have made along the way. Dream big dreams, you can accomplish anything, and I am proof of that! •

e’ll over on your steer side, once again another extremely high quality class of cattle. My hat’s off to these exhibitors that come in here. Six, or seven, maybe even eight deep cattle that I think if were in a different class would end up being in your top pair, if not possibly your class winner. I am going to tell you though, there’s two at the top end of this class that are absolutely incredible cattle. For me, the young ladies steer I lead off with, does so rather handily in my eyes. I am here to tell you guys this one’s an absolute stallion in my eyes. Beginning at the surface, he’s the truest and most honest in terms of his structure. The way he gets off his shoulder, the use of his front knee, his hip, his hind leg, his rear pastern is absolutely on point. He oozes quality from every single pore. So deep, so fresh and attractive. The way he sets hes neck onto the apex of his shoulder. Fresh, youthful and juvenile as you study him down through his chest. Round and robust in terms of his rib cage and design, and yet you get your hands on him and he handles like a true man. So expressive, so wide, and square and true over his rib into his loin. He gets progressively wider and squarer into his pin set. And then the young lady asks this one to lead, you talk about one that’s as mobile and athletic as any I’ve ever seen. What an outstanding creature to win this particular class. •

hat did it mean to win both shows at the Indiana State Fair? It is really hard for me to put into works what winning both the barrow show and steer show at the Indiana State Fair was like but I will try. Well, my dad and mom would always talk about 10 chances… we would only have 10 chances to win the Indiana State Fair and that seemed scary because 10 isn’t a lot. We always knew we were going to try hard to win the barrow show but the steer goal didn’t really start until after my first year at the state fair when the Wilcox family sold me Andy. He was a Simmental steer they had raised. Once I had a taste of the grand drive at the Indiana State Fair our family knew at that moment we wanted to back in that coliseum…. it truly is the greatest show! From that point we worked hard with the help of the Wilcox, Caldwell and Jones team to find the one that could run. Its funny because some how we ended up with not just one, but two Todd, Brandon, John and Cole are good salesmen. We worked so hard all season to get these steers right and trust me it wasn’t easy. Fuzz, Cross steer, was kind of a challenge. He wasn’t mean, but we think he was partially blind. Every show we would take him to our partnership got better. It wasn’t until at ISF I believe he totally trusted me…. we were one. I remember sitting in the kitchen and hearing my dad look at my mom and

say we have an amazing set of steers I think we should focus on trying to win both the barrow and steer show because we may never have 2 steers like this again. I think my mom thought he was crazy, but she said we can try. So, we started the search for the barrow. We drove to Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana and flew to California. My dad and Travis Platt pulled together the best set of barrows they possibly could.

166

August 5, 2018 was the day I will never forget. Not only because that day changed my families lives but it was the day we woke up and worked for…the day we dreamed about. We would talk about August 5, 2018 every single day until it arrived. I fed, worked hair, drove pigs, walked steers underneath moon light at 4:00am just for that day. We tried our best as a family to have everything ready for 8/5/18 and then it arrived. The day started early with one last run with my family in the coliseum everyone that helped me was there. John, Trisha and Cole Wilcox, Cody Goodman, and my mom and dad. I would not be here without this group of people…. they are my show family which is thicker than blood. They are the ones you laugh and cry with. The ones you win and you lose with. The ones that make you not better but the best! At one point my mom was in the cattle barn with Boomer the Chi steer and missed me showing Milo the cross barrow. I could wait to tell her what Rash said…. he called him a gangster! I knew after that he loved him as much as we did. After that moment I thought is this possible could we really do it? Could we win both, but I knew not to get ahead of myself. I knew we still had a lot of work to do. It was getting close to when the barrow would be showing for champion cross and Fuzz would be going into to his

Photos Lindsay Hanewich

that moment forward my life had changed forever. I didn’t have a lot of time to process it because I had to go right back in for the steer show. I felt so confident because I knew Fuzz had trusted me completely. When I set him up I thought back to the year before when I saw the Grand Champion steer get slapped. I thought that I had to go for that goal and it happened the second slap. I did it… we achieved a goal that we as a show family worked so hard for. I am so thankful for these 3 animals: Milo, Fuzz and Boomer. I am so blessed to be supported by the best of the best; Wilcox Show Cattle, Caldwell Show Cattle, Jones Show Cattle, Platt Showpigs, Heimer Hampshires, Cody Goodman and my FAMILY. We all must remember that we can do none of this without him. It is God’s plan… we just have to listen, be obedient and

have faith! When I grow up my main goal is to be a pig veterinarian. My dad is a veterinarian and I want to be just like him. Both my dad and mom went to Purdue so I want to go to Purdue also. The reason I want to be a vet just like my dad is because I like to go to surgeries with him and spend time in the pig barn with my family. Outside of becoming a veterinarian, I would love to become a livestock judge. I am just getting to start in judging but think it is a lot of fun to sort animals and tell people my opinion…. my mom says I already have that skill down. I love to show livestock and when my time is done in the ring showing livestock I think it would be a lot of fun to judge them. •

class. Like I said earlier Fuzz was partially blind so I knew that I would have to show him and let someone else show the barrow. I was ok with that because I knew Fuzz and what I had to do to get him stuck. Luckily I was able to show the barrow and still get back to the cattle barn to show Fuzz. At the end of the show day I felt blessed. Blessed to be surrounded by my family and to have the chance to once again show in one of the greatest livestock events ever. The Indiana State Fair Grand Drive is truly an amazing event. It had fireworks and a light show… it gets your blood pumping. I was so ready to show my animals on the dirt of the coliseum. When I went in for the barrow show it was truly amazing to be showing on the dirt. When Rash slapped the barrows back it felt like time had stopped. I was so astonished. From

MAKING IT COUNT

THE DECISION TO GO AFTER A GOAL ENDS IN A TOP OF THE PODIUM FINISH. Hey everyone! My name is Reid Runkel. I am 17 years old and live in Burlington, WI. My parents are Ron & Gail Runkel and I am about to begin my Senior year at Burlington High School. My story doesn’t quite start like many others who exhibit livestock across the country as I didn’t spend my whole life showing cattle. My passion was in racing Snocross and Motocross - both of which I found success in. When I was 4 years old, my dad bought me a snowmobile and I instantly fell in love. This is where my dream of being a professional snocross racer began. When I was 15 and starting that year’s snocross season, all I wanted to do was beat the racer who had been undefeated for 2 years. Once setting that goal, that is when I really became successful. After that is when I would go on and win 4 National Champion races that year along with multiple podium finishes. I was factory sponsored by Artic Cat and Polaris through my years of racing and am very grateful for their support. My parents sacrificed everything to get me where I was and will forever be thankful for that! Prior to being me being born, my family owned and operated our farm as a dairy cattle operation; but things began to go South for my family in 1996 when my PAPA, Ron Sr. was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. He lost strength quickly and the cows were sold. And the club calf operation was born. My dad is the oldest of 5 kids. There are 3 boys and 2 girls, and my mom is the youngest of 3 girls. My dad, being the oldest, was forced to work on the farm during his childhood and worked for people with club calf operations during the day. In 1994, my dad won the Wisconsin State Fair with his brother showing his steer

because he was too old. Then his brother, Steve, won again in 1995 - which is what makes this win so exciting - it’s almost a family tradition. While showing cattle, my Dad had Bob May as a mentor which he is very thankful he was able to learn from someone that successful. Throughout the years, my dad has built himself a great cowherd herd and developed Runkel Cattle Co., our club calf operation. We are all grateful for the relationships this business has helped us create with many people across the country.

SEPT/OCT 2018 / THE SHOWTIMES

In 2014, one of our showmen, Dan Spoerlein told my dad that he had a goal of winning State Fair and purchased a steer out of our fall sale that year. At this time, it was one my first years and my mom and dad made me show a carcass steer. But I still spent every night in the barn with Dan watching him and learning how much time and effort really goes into showing cattle. I just wanted to do it myself one day; but at this point I was still racing Motorcross.

202

When he won the State Fair that year, I knew in the back of my head that was a big goal in my life. My last year racing was very hard, and I was faced with some big choices. We almost lost everything, and it was time to make a decision. My dad asked me point blank, you need to choose; race or show cattle, we cannot do it all. I made my decision and it was to show cattle with the goal of someday winning State Fair. Some people may say it was a stupid choice with where my racing career was headed, but I say it ended to be the right decision.

My first year going into State fair was 2015. It was just for my dad to see if I could do it and stay dedicated. The following year my family was driving to Kansas City to pick up my steer when I was told my PAPA had passed away and I was on the combine at home. It was the hardest day of my life. I understand everyone goes through this in their life, but my PAPA was my best friend. Getting him in and out of the tractor on a daily basis was my routine. He did more things in a wheelchair than most normal people can. In 2017 I had Champion Simmental Steer at the State Fair and thank my PAPA for that win. Now here we are in 2018, and everything I sacrificed leading up to this paid off. My sister won the Racine County Fair with her own steer which was amazing; and yes, my steer that won state fair was at that same county fair. This is why winning meant so much to me. Even though you get beat down, keep on fighting. My calf never won much early on in the Spring while we were showing, and this is why winning meant so much to me. Even though you may get beat keep on fighting and I am okay with that because I made it count when I needed to. If anyone would have said to me 4 years ago that I would be writing an article for the Showtimes Magazine, I would have so NO WAY! But here I am! Cattle had never been in my eyes for the future, but it is our life and what my family loves to do. GOD IS GOOD! •

WYOMING STATE FAIR

WORKING TOWARDS AN UNFORGETTABLE MOMENT. i I’m Garrett Wurdeman. I am nineteen years old and originally from just east of Lusk, Wyoming. I graduated from Lusk High School in May 2018. This Fall I am attending Casper College and, pursuing a degree in Agriculture Business. My father Neal, step-mother Elly, brother Carson, younger sister Lainey and, I operate 5W Livestock. We spend most of our time managing our cow-calf operation, backgrounding feedlot, and abundance of irrigated farm ground with our emphasis being hay. My passion for showing cattle started watching my older brother Carson show at the county and state fair. And with three years between us, it was a long three years of watching. We are fortunate to live just across the road from Greg Asche (Asche Show Cattle) and Ken & Clayton Frye (Frye Cattle Company). So, when my time came to step into the ring, I was chomping at the bit to pick out a show calf from their herd. As my brother and I got a few more years of showing under our belts, our parents started hauling us around to a few jackpot shows in Wyoming.

In 2012 I went back to Frye and Asche to purchase a steer. We figured if we were going to spend the money, we better do it right. My family made a little two head cooler to help aid with hair growth. It wasn’t anything fancy, but a little elbow grease it did the trick. In the summer of 2013 after winning county fair I was pumped to head to the big Wyoming State Fair. Hirchell met up with us to assist us with getting “Mo” ready for the show. I stepping into the ring with hopes of winning my class, and I did just that. We went back in for a division champion with high hopes and it paid off. I couldn’t have been more nervous to go back in for Grand Drive. When I was honored to get the slap, a spark hit my whole family. With my brother’s show career nearing the end, it was all hands-on deck to get a piece of the state fair again. My brother was fortunate enough to end his showing career with the Reserve Champion Market Steer in both 2014 and, 2015. With 3 more years left I had the thought in the back of my mind to give State Fair another shot, but I knew it wasn’t going to come easy. In 2016 I had one of most stubborn steers on the planet. But with lots of patience and hard work I knew it

could pay off. At the State Fair I was selected with the Champion Market Steer. Fast forward to my last year in 2018. With all the success we had with Frye and Asche it was a no brainer to get my last steer from them. I purchased “Warpaint” through their online sale, and I could not be more excited to step into the ring with him. I first exhibited him at Denver, then Blackout, and Jackpots all over Wyoming, and Nebraska. Over the course of the year we were fortunate enough to some success here and there but we knew the best was still to come because “Warpaint” was still green. After a long summer of being camped out in the barn and fair quickly approaching, the excitement brewed. After a successful county fair the state fair couldn’t come soon enough. State Fair was a long week waiting for the steer on the final day. With the steer show day final here, we rallied the team to go for it one more time. Just like 2013 the nerves had set in. After coming out on top in my class and division, things got pretty exciting for the final drive. As I took my first step into the ring it hit me that this was my last time showing at the Wyoming State fair. After what had seemed like forever in the grand drive “Warpaint” and I finally got the slap. With my showing career near the end I’d like to huge thanks my parents, my siblings, Greg Asche, Ken and Clayton Frye, Hirchell and Kelli LeClair, Tommy Meek and Sheri Smith, Matt, Kelly, and Jhett Jameson. And another thank you to all my other friends and family who have helped me get to where I am today. •

beyond the backdrop

While at a jackpot in Riverton Wyoming in 2008 my brother and I were introduced to Hirchell LeClair. My brother had a pretty good steer that year and Hirchell offered to help get him ready. Not knowing much, if anything at all about pulling a leg or picking up a set of clippers, it was an eye opener to see that steer change. While this was just the beginning of a friendship with “ Hirch,” we knew the fun was still to come.

C O M P A N Y

Travis and Beth’s story doesn’t start here though. The couple both grew up in the registered seed stock industry., Travis with registered Angus in Oklahoma and Beth with registered Limousin cattle near Lexington Kentucky. Both grew up as active members of their breed associations and showed cattle and also helped promote their families’ operations at events all across the United States. It didn’t take long for both Travis and Beth to develop a deep passion to continue their careers in an industry that had given them so much. Still not knowing each other at the time, the two started helping some of the larger purebred seed stock operations across the country, mostly working on show cattle and helping exhibit cattle at State Fair’s and all the big national shows.

In 1995 the Pembrook’s finally met when Travis went to Lexington Kentucky to help with some Limousin show cattle at an operation managed by Beth’s father. At that time Beth was in charge of the show and sale cattle there. As you can imagine the rest was history from there. Fast forward to 1996, and Travis and Beth were married and had serious aspirations of building their own program. The couple both knew in order to do this they needed a place to settle and land for cattle. After visiting with family, they learned that the same family land that Travis grew up on in Oklahoma could also be available to them. Together they both decided to make the move from Kentucky to Oklahoma and it was also a unanimous decision between the two that their main objective would be to raise and market Registered Angus cattle. Once back in Oklahoma, the couple took over helping manage the Angus cattle that had already been put in place years ago by parents and Grandparents along with adding fresh genetics purchased mainly from bigger Angus herds throughout Montana. In addition to raising Angus cattle, the couple also decided to use

the talents they had gained over the years working on show cattle to start a custom fitting service that would get cattle ready for shows and sales for other operations across the country. Within two years the custom fitting business had gotten bigger than the two could have ever imagined. There were times when the two had more than 80 head that had been sent in from all across the U.S and Canada. The cattle that came in were to be shown at State Fairs and all the big shows like the American Royal, North American, and National Western. Many of the cattle that came in were also slated to be sold at the Winter beef expos as well. While exhibiting at these shows the Pembrook’s say they were extremely blessed to have multiple national champions in several different breeds as well as work for and learn from some of the

greatest minds in the cattle business. The Pembrook’s also add that many of the people that they were working for were teaching them valuable lessons in marketing and breeding cattle as well. Along with family, Travis and Beth feel like they have to mention a few of the people that contributed to much of their success, people like Dan May, Bill Couch, Jim Williams, Donnie Robertson and Kirk Stierwalt just to name a few. The Pembrook’s both say that they have gained valuable knowledge over the years from people like this, that were always willing to spend a little extra time and share the skill sets that they had developed. People like this they say has contributed greatly to the overall success of Pembrook Cattle Company. While the custom fitting was in full swing, Travis and Beth were also

increasing their Angus cowherd numbers along with starting to have sales of their own as well. Their breeding cattle operation had started to grow and was starting to over shadow the custom fitting business. The Pembrook’s were starting to market a lot of cattle and the cattle were going out and winning at numerous shows around the country. Travis and Beth contribute much of this success not only to the cattle but even more so to being blessed by getting the cattle they raise and market into the hands of wonderful people. People they say, Instill the same values of hard work, family and most importantly God in their children just like they grew up with and try to instill in their two boys as well. This is what led to one of their current ad slogans of, Putting Good Cattle into the Hands of Great People.

Both Travis and Beth contribute any success they have had over the years to the people that have been placed in their lives. As Pembrook Cattle Company has grown the importance of partnerships and COOPs has been key in helping sustain that growth. Many of these have been formed with customers and involve using the genetics they have purchased from PCC and successfully shown and promoted over their years. This has not only been a good fit for helping customers generate income but has also helped the Pembrook operation meet their needs of needing more cattle to fill their market. One key partnership the Pembrook’s mention that has been great for their program is their partnership with Scott and Shanna Standridge in Arkansas. The

Standrige’s started out like many, purchasing cattle from Pembrook Cattle for their three children and as the years went by the Standridge’s had a pasture full of previous champions whose genetics needed to be used and taken advantage of. The Standridge’s now provide many of the Red Angus, Simmental, and Angus that are offered in various PCC sales throughout the year. Today, Travis and Beth along with the two most important additions to ever come along at PCC, Bret age 10 and Bryson 4, have four sales a year. A production sale on October 20, the Holiday Lights Sale in December, a bull sale the end of March, along with selling cattle in the Texas Limited Edition sale also the end of March. Together the family also hosts three small group cattle camps at PCC

during the summer months that help train youth and their parents in the basic skills of show cattle selection, preparation, nutrition, and showmanship. Both Travis and Beth have a strong passion for working with the youth of the livestock industry and passing down the skills that have been given to them. The pair also feel blessed to be raising sons Bret and Bryson in a setting that teaches so many real-life skills on a daily basis. In working with Ag Youth on a daily basis the Pembrooks can’t help but be excited and optimistic to see the changes and progress that the future generations bring to our industry. The couple believe we are in good hands. •

FRANKS IGNITE YOUR PASSION BY SIERRA FRANKS, TX

RALPH WALDO EMERSON

his quote has been one of my favorites to describe myself ever since I came across it back in high school, a quote that rings true to this day, here is why….

I grew up in the passenger seat of my grandpa’s feed truck. Feeding pastures of cows, listening to gospel music on the radio, hearing stories of Pa and his cousin Jimmy hauling open cattle back in the day. I took in what I loved the most, spending time with my favorite person, and our favorite thing, Hereford Cattle. To say my four siblings and I were raised in a barn, would be an understatement. Born Ranches runs along the Kiowa creek in the North East Corner of the Texas Panhandle, where the wind blows, the plains roll, and trees are far and few between. Sheldon, Sheridan and I grew up exhibiting our ranch raised Hereford steers across the country. Shayne and Sheyenne are still making their mark in show rings across Texas. Our parents and grandparents are the core of our family. My Dad, Gene Franks is a Crop Insurance Agent, and Risk Management Specialist for Hulsey Insurance. Mom, Terri Franks is a stay at home mom. She has her hands full with all of us, taking care of the house, and the show steers that are in the barn every day. Pa and Macaw, Stanley and Ronda Born, are full time farmers and ranchers, running cows, raising wheat, milo and hay. They keep us busy and hold us to a higher standard. They instilled a deep passion for the Livestock Industry from the moment we took our first breaths. We were expected to help in feeding cows, working cattle, wheat and milo harvest, along with all of the other ranch and farms tasks,

including sale preparation. Halter breaking, washing, drying, scratching while Scott clipped, making/delivering meals, or providing entertainment, no matter what it was, we all had our jobs. While the years flew by, we continued to climb the totem pole and grew into greater tasks. When I reached high school, I was your typical teenage girl, I was a cheerleader, ran cross country, and played softball. I was very active in FFA, having been our District President, and Area Officer, and of course continued to show my steers, but somehow in the middle of all of that, I picked up a hobby, that at the time I had no idea would change the course of my life…. I picked up a camera, and honestly never set it down again. My best friend had a full frame Nikon camera that became like another part of me, I was constantly taking photos of our friend group, capturing ranch life, or just anything we thought would make a “pretty photo”. When Pa caught wind of this new-found hobby from Mom, he immediately started suggesting combining my hobby, and my livelihood. He always used Katie Johnson Edwards as an example that by not only knowing cattle, but also knowing how to use a camera, and take a photo could possibly come in handy down the road. By Winter I had purchased my first camera, a Canon Rebel T3i, a small crop sensor camera that I felt fit my needs best at the time. February rolled around, which meant Fort Worth had passed, and it was time to prepare Power of the Plains Sale cattle. That was the very first time I would ever picture cattle for a sale. Talk about nervous! I made it through those chilly, windy two days with a few struggles, lots of questions, a million pointers, but mainly prayer! The final evening, I uploaded them to the laptop to begin editing, and had no idea what to do from there. Dad opened photoshop and explained

to me how to remove halters, and we went from there. Walking into the weekend I was nervous, and very unsure of myself, but I learned quickly to bypass my pride and just ask questions. I truly believe that was one of my greatest learning moments up to that point. I moved on to find my passion in photography, with every click of a camera, I found happiness.

I had gotten away from who I set out to be. Instead, I was continually comparing myself and sizing myself up to who I thought I should be at that particular time. I didn’t realize that by doing this, I was adding toxicity to my life. I contemplated selling my cameras, going back to college, finding what others thought was a “Real Job”. It wasn’t until I caught pneumonia in the middle of the Fall run last year that I realized who was truly in charge of my happiness. It was myself, it wasn’t in how successful I was,

THE SHOWTIMES / SEPT/OCT 2018

From that first experience in the picture pen to today, I have had the greatest blessing of being able to work closely with some of the most talented photographers in the industry! One being Joelynn Rathmann, who in the beginning of my journey was my greatest role model, and who I now consider a dear friend of mine. I caught my first big break the fall that I graduated High School. I had sent some photos and a resume to ShowChampions and was immediately hired to work Tulsa for them. I worked closely with Bruce, and learned all about the Canon 5D Mark iii, and taking ring shots. I was blown away by how much I learned in those 8 days in Oklahoma. In January, I was exhibiting a steer on The Hill in Denver, after taking my backdrop Joelynn grabbed me to ask if I was going to work in Houston. I was completely awe struck that they would even want me back. March rolled around and I found myself in Houston, sporting a back vest for 10 days; soaking up a show that I had exhibited at, and was now able to give back to. I’ll never forget after one very long day in the ring, I was completely exhausted, but the second I returned back to the office I saw a smile on Joelynn’s face and was very quickly reminded why I was there. Time passed by, I began to shoot more and more shows, but my favorites were always when I was wearing a JRP shirt, and repping a woman who I considered the Boss Babe of them all. Joelynn not only taught me how to shoot at a backdrop or how to tune in on my camera settings, but she taught me that hard work doesn’t go unnoticed. She taught me that when you love the industry, the kids, the stock, the families, and breeders, your true flame will ignite, you just have to stay grounded. I will never be able to thank Joelynn for keeping me sane in those three and a half years. For the late-night chats about life, for her always reminding me why I had chosen that particular path. That was the catch, why had I not been able to keep my reasoning in the forefront of my mind? Why did I struggle to find my passion and continue to keep my flame burning?

“I TRULY BELIEVE GOD PLANTS OBSTACLES IN OUR WAY TO HELP US GROW INTO WHO WE ARE MEANT TO BE.”

it wasn’t about how many people knew my name, my happiness didn’t lie in a number. I wasn’t a number, so why should I believe that I was? I spent a month recovering from that nasty sickness, the majority of it spent at home resting, and contemplating just what exactly I was going to do. Would I give up, sell out, and move on, or would I stand back up, dust myself off, and continue to pursue the dream I had. We rolled right through Denver, Fort Worth meant another week in Cowtown, then time to clip, picture, and video babies. Scott Prewitt has helped our family for the last 13 years, and at this point he truly is like another brother to my siblings and I. While he clipped, we talked about the future and what it held, we discussed my dilemma, and how to get back to the path I began on. He knew that I planned to photograph Oklahoma Youth Expo with Heidi Anderson and the rest of the Legacy Livestock Team. It was my last straw, if it didn’t go well, and I didn’t come home loving every second I was going to walk away. He told me, “Sierra, you have it, you have what it takes, you just have to find it again.” Walking into OYE, I kept in

mind what he said, and I found it. I found exactly what I was looking for, a family. A family on the road, when we spend months away from blood relatives. I had known Heidi and Charles for a few years, Charles was actually my uncle’s College roommate, back in the day. I didn’t expect to find my place, but I did, thanks to them and the entire team of extremely talented individuals. A week spent in Oklahoma laughing, smiling, enjoying every single second. Heidi constantly asked me how I felt, and what I thought, and I told her exactly every feeling I had. Nothing but pure bliss. Fast forward to May, we had the first ever Legacy Livestock Team Retreat, at 1Eleven Cattle Company! Heidi and Charles had a special four days planned. Monday morning, we all had breakfast, and got right to it. The beginning of a new era for Legacy. Official Staff Members. While Heidi and Charles discussed their ideas for the future, I couldn’t help but glance around the room, a room filled with the most talented photographers, videographers, social media experts, graphic designers, and just phenomenal people. We all came from different states, families, and backgrounds; but God perfectly timed our paths to meet. We spent a lot of our time with the Drager family who, if you haven’t met them, are second to none. When our few days together concluded we all walked away with a few more tools in our belt, and a decision to make. Heidi and Charles asked each of us to fill certain places within the Legacy, and I gratefully accepted the Southern Region

Now, back to that quote at the beginning, “What lies behind you and what lies before you are tiny matters compared to what lies within you.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson Our past is just that, our past. I truly believe God plants obstacles in our way to help us grow into who we are meant to be. Without a challenge we all would stay in our comfort zones, and never truly reach our full potential, or much less know what we are capable of. Our future is full of limitless possibilities, but it all depends on our many choices. Choices surround every single thing we do. Now, the fun part, what lies within us? Our past and future are huge, they hold what has made us into who we are, they hold the unknown, but inside of our present, the magnitude is almost immeasurable. Our passion ignites the flame that will be carried into our future, just remember that the flame that you ignite within yourself, is without comprehension the largest force in the direction of your future. This is me, this is what I live my life by, I wouldn’t be who I am today without my family, and friends. I have been

blessed with a talent that has opened the door to many opportunities to travel extensively and meet some of the most extraordinary people in the world! I am true believer in surrounding yourself with good people and good things will happen. In fact, I probably use that statement too often, but it is true. In our world today, it is a necessity to have good people in your corner if you are going to stay afloat. Young people, thank every person in your corner, because I promise, not every day is guaranteed. Live every day as though it were your last, and for all its worth, laugh, love and have fun. •

Greg Harder’s Background Greg Harder’s entire life has been dedicated to the livestock industry. He was the Assistant Livestock Judging Coach at the University of Minnesota for 26-years, worked at the Minnesota State Fair as the Coliseum and Livestock Superintendent as well as acted as the Co-Coordinator of the Minnesota State Fair Beef Show for over 30-years. One could say working around the youth and future leaders of this industry is what he was meant to do. Running the shows is not Harder’s only experience. Throughout his life, he has judged in over 20 states including at the Indiana State Fair, Wisconsin, Iowa, the Dakotas and the Big E. Harder’s love for Aksarben dates back to 1974 when he exhibited there for the very first time. He has years of

exhibiting stock (such as the Champion Shorthorn at the Chicago Stock Show in 1974) and being an active member of 4-H, FFA and the National Junior Suffolk Association. This involvement and exposure to youth activities has him excited about Aksarben going in that direction – Youth, not just 4-H.

The NEW Aksarben “The NEW Aksarben is about teaching and encouraging the kids.” Greg Harder explained. “It is very youth oriented and will drift away from the typical 4-H ran show atmosphere.” When asked why people should attend and exhibit at the show, the number one reason was the fun. It is Harder and his team’s goal to make showing at Aksarben a positive experience. “It will be a fun and prestigious show to be a part of. A cool one to win and the social aspect will be like never before! Being ran by someone on the inside, that has done all of the aspects of a show – fitting, showing, judging and running – it will be a huge change!” While Harder takes Aksarben Stock Show on his maiden voyage implementing new changes such as requiring no DNA on feeder calves, using weigh cards and no retagging – he states that this is only the beginning. Down the road he plans to slowly add states eligible to show and boost the show even more. Look for full coverage from the 2018 Aksarben Stock Show on The Showtimes social media as well as the November/ December 2018 Year End Edition of The Showtimes Magazine. •

THE SHOWTIMES / SEPT/OCT 2018

ebranded with a new logo and a new vision, the 91st Annual Aksarben Stock Show will take place September 27-30th in Grand Island, Nebraska. For over 90 years, the Aksarben Horse and Livestock Show has been drawing in exhibitors to the state of Nebraska. While the show has a long history of producing a youth focused event of exemplary livestock, 2018 will mark the start a new era for Aksarben. Leading this change is Greg Harder, originally from Mountain Lake, MN. With the goal to combine the rich traditions of the show with his past experience and knowledge of the livestock industry, Harder portrays the NEW Aksarben will be better than ever before!

ver the past 12 years we have had the opportunity to travel to many different states covering shows. We’ve been to Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, Wisconsin, California, Illinois and Iowa just to name a few. This Fall, we get to add a new state to the list! We are excited to be traveling to Pennsylvania to cover the 2018 Keystone International Livestock Exposition! We will be taking photos and bringing you live updates and videos from the KILE! We will also be selling two cool Showtimes KILE caps as well!

See you this Fall!

We hope you enjoyed reading our Sept/Oct 2018 Fall Edition! This issue was packed with so many different exhibitors! It is really neat to see so many different success stories and how youth succeeded at some of the toughest shows in the country. Our Show Results included more action and behind the scene photos than ever before! We always enjoy seeing the backdrop photos, but the shots in the ring and the barn are the ones that truly capture the moment!
