Although the wells within the fort still provide a regular source of water, the town has no permanent source of water. Consequently, the inhabitants with their cattle herds keep on moving from one place to another. The region of around 60 km’s from the city of Jaisalmer is hard undulated stony soil with numerous rocky elevations. Those on west of Rangarh continuous like mountains with deep defiles in between while in the area of Pokhran tehsil and Deda in Sam tehsil, the land is gravel (magra). The sand deposit here appears like a limitless sea which overnight changes its position having been blown from one place and deposited at another.

In the ancient period, the women’s used to bring water from the nearby lakes by carrying matkas on their head. The lakes were divided according to the community. Every community has their separate lakes and they were only allowed to take water from the allotted lake.
