It’s here…summer! The kids are out of school and we are all ready to get away. As we put this publication together we are planning our vacation. Of course, for you moms out there, sometimes it’s easier just to stay home. The work involved in getting it all together is exhausting! When my sister and I were growing up our parents provided all we needed. That being said my dad worked late most every night, in the oil field, to make that happen. There were some things we probably went without having, but a family vacation every year wasn’t one of those things. My dad was home and we were all together.
There is no question that this it not a political issue. We need something bigger and a lot more effective than a government program. We need men to fight back! Dads, you provide more than a source of income to your family’s needs. You are the head of the household, the leaders of our churches, and the man our daughter’s first fell in love with. Dads, plan that vacation and start making memories that outlast the latest iphone!
We have a real father crisis in our country these days. Virtually all-major social pathologies have been linked to fatherlessness: • 63% of youth suicides are from fatherless homes (US Dept. Of Health/Census) – 5 times the average. • 90% of all homeless and runaway children are from fatherless homes – 32 times the average. • 85% of all children who show behavior disorders come from fatherless homes – 20 times the average. • 80% of rapists with anger problems come from fatherless homes –14 times the average. • 71% of all high school dropouts come from fatherless homes – 9 times the average.

becoming a man
It seems we have a problem in our society today with “delayed manhood.” This phenomenon was depicted
in the 2006 film Failure to Launch in which a 35 year old bachelor played by Matthew McConaughey is content to live with his parents and hang out with his buddies. I learned from a colleague who teaches young married couples that this problem of delayed manhood is also a big issue even for married men. They think they are still in their fraternity days and regularly are on the town with their friends or spending all of their time on video games. Proverbs 29:18 tells us that, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” Just because you can grow a beard does not mean that you have become a man. Young men need guidance and vision of what it is to truly be a Godly man. 6 | Faith & Family
In 1990, Bill Mccartney, then the football coach for the University of Colorado, and Dave Wardell were inspired to begin an organization called Promise Keepers. During the 1990’s, Promise Keepers filled stadiums with tens of thousands of men who prayed together, worshiped together, and encouraged one another to be strong men of faith. I remember the powerful influence Promise Keepers and similar organizations like Patrick Morley’s Man in the Mirror had on me as a young man. Speakers like Steve Farrar challenged me to be a Godly husband and father and to create a spiritual legacy for my children. They provided vision for what it looks like to be a man of Christ. Even before I had children, I was inspired by Robert Lewis’ Raising a Modern Day Knight. Lewis did a great job of teaching how to develop a young boy into becoming a real man. My good friend Jay Harvill who lives in Memphis takes his role of raising a Godly man seriously. I recently had an incredible opportunity to spend a weekend with him and six other men to celebrate his son Kenton’s 13th birthday. Jay used this milestone birthday to speak into his son’s life and to cast a vision for manhood. Each man there was given a topic to spend some one on one time with Kenton discussing. The weekend was filled with fun and “manly” activities such as chopping wood and shooting skeet. Kenton fasted during the weekend and the celebration ended with a huge feast of all of his favorite foods.
It was rare sight to table of chocolate doughnuts, macaroni cheese, and fried chicken all served up for a meal! While this type of event is probably not for every father and son, what struck all of us there was the intentionality and purpose that Jay has about raising a Godly young man. We were all inspired to go back home to our own families and be more purposeful! As followers of Christ, we are provided such a vivid example of manhood. Our Savior could wield a whip and run the moneychangers out of the Temple, but also tenderly care for children. He withstood the brutal scourging of the Roman soldiers, and yet showed compassion for his tormentors. We see in Him incredible strength and humility. Every generation of young men have to find their way to becoming real men of God. I am so thankful for the people and organizations that spoke into my life during my formative years. I hope that new leaders will continue to rise up and cast the vision for today’s youth about what it really means to be a man. However, as a father, I know ultimately it is my job to raise my son so that he has no confusion about what a Godly man looks like. On this Father’s Day, I hope we will show honor to those dads who had paved they way for all of us…they deserve it!

you don’t have to live in paranoia and there is a freedom and trust with one another. We must recognize that Satan is out to destroy the family and he is so conniving and smart in how he is doing it. It all starts out so innocently and before you know it, you are involved in sites or chats with people that will lead you down the wrong path. Decide today to take some control and shut some things off and apply principles in your life that will help you as a couple to walk in the freedom of the Lord. Galatians 5: 13 says, “For you were called to be free, brothers, only don’t use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but serve one another through love.”
Is technology jeopardizing your relationships today? Just a couple of weeks ago, Deb and I were in the Atlanta airport and we ran into Chili’s and grabbed a bite of lunch. After being seated, I looked up at the people in the tables next to us (there were 6 tables, side by side) and EVERY person was on their cell phone or computer. There was no communication going on other than by their phones and Ipads. How is the tech world that you live in impacting your family and your relationships? We are growing a society that does not know how to communicate. We have a generation under 30 that would rather text than to talk “face to face.” Let me give you some ways to“Win the Tech Battle at Home.”
7 | Faith & Family
1. Have some “No tech time” in your home. Have a time every night that all the electronics are off, and not just on silent. Provide an atmosphere where there can’t be any distractions so your family can talk about their day and “slow” down.
Steve and Debbie Wilson www.marriagemattersnow.com
2. Build some standards or principles for your “tech world” that protect you from temptations. In 1 Timothy 6:11, it says, “But as for you, O man of God, Flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.” Ask yourself what you need to delete or not use to guard your mind and heart. 3. Do not have secrets anywhere in your life especially in your “tech world.” I want Debbie to check my emails, my texts on my phone and voice messages. This way I know we are protected as a couple and we are not hiding anything. Plus…..

THE SEEN AND THE UNSEEN
The Limits of Human Reason and the Knowledge of God There is the seen, and there is the unseen, the material and the immaterial. That which is material can be scientifically examined and experienced, the immaterial can only be seen and experienced spiritually. These are two worlds that are only seemingly at odds with one another. If you attempt to examine that which is of a spiritual nature using a science that is by its very nature meant to explore the material realm, you will fail. The things that are of God are far beyond the capabilities of our finite mind to comprehend. The divine can only be known through the nous, that place in the heart that is our true center. It, unlike
the brain, is capable of knowledge that is beyond human comprehension, coming as it does from noetic knowledge. When we try to apply words to the noetic form, we fail. We can no more explain God than we can explain quantum physics, since both are unseen. God is outside the realm of human intellectual understanding. The Eastern Church approaches things of God as holy mysteries, since God can only be known in His divine energies, not in His essence. If a scientist can believe in quantum physics, the unseen, why can he not believe in God Whom he has not seen? If we can believe in the concept of infinity, something that goes on and on without end, why can we not believe in God? The science of the soul is noetic and can be examined and experience only through the activation of the nous.
The nous in Orthodox Christian theology is the "eye of the heart or soul", the mind of the heart. God created us with the nous because the human intellect is not capable of knowing Him without it. The intellect alone can not know God, for human reasoning is limited to the things that are of a material nature. God is unknowable without His divine revelation, and only the nous can perceive this knowledge. God's essence remains inaccessible without noetic knowledge. Science has it's place, but only the heart can know God. Love in Christ, Abbot Tryphon

Dear Kayla,
Dear Rebecca, There’s nothing morally wrong with receiving food stamps, as long as you’re not lying about your income or situation in order to receive them. The biggest problem with food stamps, and other forms of government assistance, is many times a person becomes dependent on someone else to take care of them. I don’t want you and your kids to develop a victim mentality and become trapped in a cycle of substandard living. You said you were a nurse before you came home to be with the kids, right? I’d suggest updating your nursing certification, if necessary, and going back to work in your field—maybe even as an emergency room nurse. I know the hours can be weird, but the pay is great. It would really get your income rolling again, plus you could afford to pay someone to look after the kids when necessary. You’ve been through a lot, Rebecca. Life has knocked you around lately, so it’s okay if you need to take food stamps for a little while. But I’d encourage you to start thinking from a long-term perspective as to what it’ll take to move forward and generate a good, livable income for you and your kids. Get into attack mode, take your nursing degree, intelligence and experience, and create a quality life for your family. I know you can do it! —Dave

I understand the feelings involved, especially if you’ve spent all of your time home with your child. But don’t make the mistake of blaming the debt if you simply want to go back to work. You’re not a bad person if you have kids and you work outside the home. I have several ladies on my team who have young children, and they work 40 hours a week. Guess what? They’re excellent mothers! Anyone who says a woman can’t be a great mom because she works outside the home is full of crap. On the other hand, if anyone says you’re not fulfilling yourself as a person or you’re stunting your intellectual development because you’re a stay-at-home mom, they’re full of it too! I’d advise you and your husband to sit down, talk about this a lot, and pray about the situation. Don’t worry about what anyone else thinks, because it’s none of their business. You guys are in charge of your lives and your family. That makes it your job to decide what’s best. If you want to stay at home, and you guys can make it happen financially, that’s a great thing. If you can’t right now, or you simply want to go back into the workforce, that’s fine too. It’ll help solve your debt problem. Then after you’ve got your money under control, you might find you want to come home again. The option will be there. For now, I think you should go back to work. Why? Because you want to! —Dave

LICHEN OR NOT You’ve probably seen lichen in one form or another growing on rocks, walls, monuments or trees. Lichens are actually two organisms in one, composed of a fungus and often a green alga, growing together in a symbiotic relationship. The fungus needs the alga’s chlorophyll-containing cells to synthesize carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water using the sun’s energy. In most cases, neither can grow independently of the other. Symbiosis comes in a variety of forms, but it’s always about dissimilar organisms using one another, sometimes to the benefit of both, sometimes to the benefit of only one. (Wikipedia.com; thefreedictionary.com; American Heritage Dictionary) I noticed this lichen-covered branch one day on a walk and thought it strangely beautiful. And that got me to thinking about relationships. Many different kinds of personalities touch our lives – in families, social situations and business. Over the years, I’ve had the misfortune to deal with a number of pushy, opinionated people whose corporate motto has been “my way or the highway.” Not only do they think they know what’s best for them; they think they know what’s best for me!
11 | Faith & Family
I remember one in particular. This person had a variety of interests, some of which intersected with mine. But over time, as our friendship developed, I found that every pastime and every hobby I enjoyed automatically became the new favorite of my friend, with regular input on the way it should be done. Everywhere I went, the friend wanted to go. Every need I had, expressed or implied, was instantly filled by the friend. This quickly became tiresome, irritating and confining, because it was all about the control and appropriation of my time. And, the friend, when refused constant inclusion in every aspect of my life, became sulky and depressed. The relationship did not last because I felt smothered and ended it to save my sanity. Now think about the gentleness of our Lord. He waits and waits for us to come to Him. Yes, the Savior of all mankind, the God of the universe, waits upon our contrary natures and whims! He waits to talk to us. He waits to open His Word to us. He waits to feed us with spiritual food. He waits to give us the advice we have sought from everyone but Him. He waits to comfort our broken hearts. He waits to help us with our human relationships. He waits to have a relationship with us! He is never pushy. He lets us make mistakes, but He never lords them over us. He waits and
waits and waits - until we are ready. We are always free to choose, because Jesus is a gentleman in every sense of the word. Lichen or not, users, narcissists and controllers will always be with us, scrambling over one another to grab our lives and rob us of peace. Don’t let them do it. Whenever possible, run away from them and into the arms of the One who lets you keep your life, but makes it oh, so much better! Dianne B. Howell Shreveport, LA

n June 2, 2012, 9-year old Shelby Patrick was found at the bottom of the pool at East Ridge Country Club where she had been attending a birthday party. No one knew how long she had been under water, and she was given CPR until the medics arrived. At the hospital she was in very critical condition, and the Patricks were informed that Shelby was not expected to survive; however, God had other plans

Next, Shelby left for Baylor Our Children’s House for therapy. Shelby’s school, South Highlands Magnet, held a fundraiser for her medical expenses, a local business woman staged a fashion show, Shelby’s friends ran lemonade stands, meals were provided every day for the months that Shelby was in the hospital, and all of the local news media gave continuous reports and updates on Shelby’s miraculous recovery process. Once home from the hospital after a long summer of therapy,
Shelby began her fourth grade year where she was noticeably weaker in many of the cognitive skills which had, before her accident, been her strengths. Tamika was extremely concerned, as 4th grade is the year in which students must pass the LEAP exam to continue to 5th grade. As Tamika sifted through her piled up mail from their lengthy hospital stay, she noticed three flyers from LearningRx, a local brain training center. Soon after, she received a text message from her friend Elizabeth Enochs, the Community Liaison for LearningRx, who encouraged the Patricks to consider intense brain training for Shelby to recover the cognitive skills that had weakened due to the traumatic brain injury. Shelby took her cognitive skills evaluation, and then Tamika and Shelby met with Donesa Walker, owner/executive director of LearningRx Shreveport/Bossier, and Rebekah Lewis, director of the Pines Road center, and immediately knew that this was an open door in the plan of God. “The first thing that Rebekah said to me,” shares Tamika, “was ‘We have been waiting on Shelby all summer!’” She, Donesa, and Elizabeth had been praying for Shelby since the day of the accident and had followed each step of her recovery. Knowing what amazing results personal brain training guarantees, Donesa was positive that LearningRx would be the perfect step on Shelby’s road to recovering her full cognitive skills. Rebekah, now Shelby’s personal brain trainer, says, “I loved Shelby from the moment I said the first prayer for her to survive, and now here she is with me almost every day. I am so blessed; I get to

witness this miracle over and over again as the brain training rebuilds and strengthens cognitive skills that everyone thought would be forever lost.” Since she began LearningRx last fall, Shelby’s visual and auditory processing speed, focus & attention, short & long term memory, and her logic & reasoning skills have soared. She is confident, intelligent, and walking sunshine to everyone she meets. Tamika says, “I am so grateful that Shelby loves LearningRx and is always eager to come to her sessions. LearningRx has restored her confidence and cognitive abilities, and she loves learning new skills (and is very competitive with them!). Reasoning Brain Cards are her favorite. I am so pleased with the progress she is making, and I look forward each time she goes to session to see what she has accomplished and the huge smile on her face. “Above all,” shares Tamika, “I am grateful that God chose our family to show there are still miracles to be done in this world. Every day we look at Shelby, we see a miracle. Thank you, God, for surrounding us with so many caring people. Thank you God for saving Shelby’s life.” Tamika and Shelby both agree that seeing all of this showed them the love, humanity, and compassion of people, and they will never forget and will always be grateful for this wonderful community of Shreveport/Bossier and LearningRx. One more thing… Shelby passed the LEAP exam with flying colors! Way to go, Shelby!
rain training is basically a system of exercises and challenges that strengthen mental abilities that make you smarter. The idea of brain training is relatively new, because until recently, scientists believed IQ and intelligence were fixed at birth. However, modern brain science revealed the brain’s neuroplasticity — its ability to build new pathways, memory, and reasoning “power centers.” This plasticity means the brain can be strengthened, IQ can be increased, and quite often learning disabilities can be eliminated. At LearningRx during one-on-one brain training sessions, personal brain trainers focus on strengthening the weakest cognitive skills. Cognitive skills are the underlying mental skills that allow us all to think, learn, reason, remember and pay attention. They include skills such as memory, attention, processing speed, logic and reasoning, and visual and auditory processing. After testing to determine which skills are weak, personalized brain trainers will target those weak areas with brain-building exercises. They quickly push their student onto faster, harder, more intense exercises, with lots of quick corrections, immediate feedback, and extensive distractions. Brain training differs from tutoring in that tutoring is a short-term fix

which addresses the symptoms of learning struggles by simply reteaching academic information that the child should have already learned. Brain training is a lifetime solution. It attacks the source of learning problems by strengthening core learning skills, and eliminating the problem. But brain training isn’t just for struggling learners. Across the country, people are hiring professional brain trainers to slow age-related cognitive decline, get a mental edge at school or at work, and reverse the effects of stroke. In many areas, U.S. soldiers enroll in brain training programs to help recover from traumatic brain injury. And they’re seeing amazing success.
The 2011 Report of LearningRx Training Results shows impressive gains for students of all ages and levels of academic abilities, including adults and “gifted” children, and those diagnosed with TBI, dyslexia, ADHD, speech and language disorders, autism spectrum disorders, and general learning disabilities. That study of more than 2,500 students showed LearningRx brain training programs resulted in an average IQ increase of 14.9 points. contined page 17

Summer is upon us and any woman, anywhere is probably ready to pull their hair out or at the bare minimum looking for escape from the overwhelming responsibility of kids, family, work and anything else that falls in between! Sit back and grab a cup of coffee and let’s absorb God’s Presence for a moment together! First of all – God speaks to us from so many different avenues but the main one is His Word. So many times in my life I have been overcome with needs, the unknown and life that spills over onto everything I do. Busyness is a constant for me. Many times I have to STOP myself and absorb God’s Presence so that I can energize my batteries for another day in the world of ME! The way that I do this is I STOP – EXALT GOD – ABSORB – FEEL HIS PRESENCE! While this may seem foreign for some – it is the ONLY way I can maintain my life! I rely on passages from the Bible like Isaiah 25:1 – which says “Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your name, for in perfect faithfulness you have done wonderful things, things planned long ago.” Ahhhh – just absorb that with me! ‘In perfect faithfulness you have done wonderful things, things planned long ago.’…sometimes I need to recharge myself in knowing that God, who is greater and higher than my ways designed my path and my future which is full of promise according to the Bible! This gives me great hope to be able to continue no matter what I am facing! What are you facing today? Does life seem mundane, overwhelming, and problematic? God says that He has in His perfect faithfulness done wonderful things – FOR ME AND FOR YOU! Our job is to believe Him! If you are a mother, you can see God’s faithfulness in the face of your children; if you are a career minded woman – you can see God in the job that He gave to you; if you fall in between and nothing is working out for you – you have the HOPE of a future in God when you turn toward Him and exalt Him and praise Him for the love He gives! You see, there is ALWAYS a reason to call upon the Presence of God – from any place in your life – the good and the bad! God’s faithfulness has not changed that is what makes His Presence something we need! We just have to be looking for that Presence in our lives. Go ahead and enjoy that coffee and turn your face to God and rejoice in His Presence today! He made this moment just for you girlfriend! JoAnne Timothy www.heartsfireministry.com

Wise Words Some thoughts from Proverbs:
He who corrects a scoffer gets himself abuse, and he who reproves a wicked man incurs injury. (9:7) The wise of heart will heed commandments, but a prating fool will come to ruin. (10:8) Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses. (10:12) Wise men lay up knowledge, but the babbling of a fool brings ruin near. (10:14) A prudent man conceals his knowledge, but fools proclaim their folly. (12:23)
Translation: Be careful what you say and Do. Not. Feed. The. Trolls.

continued from page 13 eta Broome has always been a voracious reader. Since as far back as she can remember, Terry Broome (Leta’s grandmother) says that Leta could not get enough to read. Terry shares, “At night when Leta was supposed to be in bed, her Grandfather or I would pass by her room, and she would hide a flashlight under the covers and have her books lined up beside her down to her feet.” Leta had been blessed with a wonderful gift – the love of reading. Terry’s favorite memories are of Leta reading to her grandfather, and seeing both their eyes light up with the pleasure of sharing a good book. As Leta grew up, her love of reading continued even as she took on a new focus: swimming. She began attending swim meets and winning. A goal of the 2016 Olympics became ensconced in her mind, and she strove determinedly toward that objective. In addition to her reading and swimming talents, Leta was a wonderful, intelligent young lady who brought home excellent grades and a loving smile to her family. Leta spent most of her elementary years crafting her talents of reading and swimming. She always joined the summer library reading club, reading over 100 books every summer. She became a better, faster, stronger swimmer, and Leta was happiest when she was sharing these gifts with her loving family. As the years progressed, however, Terry noticed a change in Leta that concerned her; Leta had begun to shy away from books on her own reading level. Her reading comprehension was not what it should be. Leta had difficulty with new concepts and organizational skills, as well as her focus and attention. Leta noticed it too. “One day,” shares Terry, “Leta came in from school and slumped in her chair.” Leta cried to her grandma, “Gram, I am having problems, real bad problems, and I am struggling just to keep up in school…in every class.” Terry’s heart broke hearing the sadness and anxiety in her usually cheerful granddaughter’s voice. She knew that she had to get help for Leta, and fast. Leta and her family attended a

Battlewings game during her 6th grade year. LearningRx was sponsoring the halftime games where Leta took on several of the challenges. Leta was excited and begged her grandma to let her go to LearningRx to strengthen her brain. Unfortunately, LearningRx at that time was too far away to be feasible, especially with several serious health issues going on in Terry’s immediate family. Throughout the next few months, Leta kept asking Terry to enroll her in LearningRx, and finally one day a miracle happened…a LearningRx opened almost
right in the Broome’s front yard! Terry knew this had to be a sign from God. The only obstacle was the financing. On the spot, Leta’s grandfather and grandmother decided it was better to pay now to avoid a lifetime of defeat for Leta, and immediately enrolled her in the Einstein Program. Once the decision was made, Terry was so impatient to get her started, pressuring Donesa almost every day. Donesa, however, would not be pressured. She knew, as she told Terry, that the right trainer for Leta was Sara Antone, and Sara was just about ready for Leta. Terry says that waiting for Sara was the smartest thing she ever did. The moment that Leta met Sara, she
wanted to learn all that Sara could give her. Sara and Leta worked together and something incredible happened: Leta’s love of reading returned, thanks to Sara and LearningRx. When Sara encouraged Leta to pay her library book fine so she could start checking out books again, Leta immediately did so and began to check out and read 20 books at a time, on and above her skill level, too. As Leta entered her 7th grade year at Youree Drive Middle School, her enthusiasm blossomed like wildfire. She said that 7th grade was so easy, and she loved school once again when only a year before she had hated it. Leta’s confidence improved and she also cut time in her swimming events throughout the year. Her focus and self-image was improved; she will be a community Service Senator for Youree Drive Middle School for the 2013-2014 school year, and is well on her way to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janiero. Her grandparents never dreamed that
coming to work on her cognitive skills to help her in the classroom would transfer to the pool. As Leta began to flourish, her academics soared and her swimming times got faster. Her anxiety lessened as her processing speed increased and she began to score record times in the pool moving up in groups and winning matches. Terry is so thrilled and relieved at the changes in Leta since she began LearningRx, and says that “the proof of value is the return to the love of reading, even surpassing her reading level, and enhancing of Leta’s confidence in her own self-image. She was finally tapping into the potential that God had given her.” Terry shares that the results of Leta’s participation in this program are exponential; no amount of money could buy the image they see nightly once again – Leta reading under her bedcovers with a flashlight. “As long as I live, I will never be able to thank LearningRx and Sara Antone enough
for the positive difference and influence that they’ve had in our lives,” says Terry. With God, nothing is impossible. And the latest update on Leta? She made ALL MASTERY scores on her LEAP test! How Often Should we Work Out? Our individual genetics, circumstances and nutrition will determine how often we should train. As a general rule, workout stimulation should only happen after we have fully recovered AND have had additional time for adaptation. In my early days of training, I thought that once my soreness had subsided a little that I should workout again to finish off the soreness and speed up my progress. However, if we are sore, it is an indication that we haven't fully recovered from our previous workout. Further, if we are training to stimulate our body to make some specifically defined change, we should rest even more so that after our body has recovered, it can have adequate time to produce the change we are seeking. Factors that will affect how fast we recover and change include (in varying degree): genetics, nutrition, stress, training intensity and training frequency. Too often trainees believe that they should workout 3 times per week. Yet, that has been a generally recommended exercise protocol for many years and was based on ideas that were untried. Today we understand better how the body deals with stress (exercise being a controlled physical stressor). What I mean is that workout frequency should change based on how hard we workout, what kind of stress we are dealing with in our life and how willing we are to eat cleanly! If we are training for peak performance in sports, the frequency should change so that we are ready to perform well in that event. If we are training for weight loss, the same is also true. To make sure that we are training with the right amount of frequency we have to listen to what our bodies are telling us! Sometimes we might be training with the right frequency, but our nutrition needs to be better. Sometimes, we might be having difficulty getting

soreness and fatigue are indications that you need more rest or a reduction in training intensity. It can also mean that you need to eat better. If you aren't feeling much of anything, you probably need to workout more often and/or workout harder! Pay close attention to how you feel before and after your workouts. Eat clean, train hard and give your body time to change! Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself! Yet, be disciplined! Keep training with consistency and know that I believe in you!
