1.1 Mumbai Metro and Mix use Development around it The thesis is an attempt to capture the spirit of Mumbai. Mumbai is a city with a wide range of cultures and communities. Simultan eously, it is growing to a far greater extent by extending and attracting a larger range of communities. A study of pros and cons of Mumbai was done.

How can this ‘con’ be converted into a ‘pro’? AIM: To implement transit-oriented development and create mix use development in Mumbai around TIA (transit influenced areas) considering upcoming and ongoing Mumbai Metros as the main link for development. OBJECTIVE: To connect architecture and built environment with help of the existing public metro transit in order to built multi functional spaces/ structures surrounding it so that a lower impact will be created on the roadways and will eventually reduces congestion and will also facilitates multi modal interchange (MMI) bringing public transportation closer to users. NEED FOR THE PROJECT: Transit Oriented Development is one of the most successful strategies for encouraging this transition, since its principles focus on compact development within easy walking distance of transit stations, bringing potential riders closer to public transport amenities. As a result, this thesis will improve Metros at a smaller level and if this happens on a larger scale throughout, it will surely be a success.

Mumbai, as the country’s financial center, draws people from all over the world to seek various opportunities. People from all over the world are flocking to it in search of work. However, this creates an issue of population concentration on a massive scale. Large concentrations put a strain on amenities including housing, infrastructure, pollution and most importantly transportation.

CHEMBUR

1. Locating Metro Stations

2. Locating Metro Station Junctions

After analysing and detailed swot analysis, the conclusions on site selection were: 1.Chembur though is commercial area creates a threat to the project due to already established options around. 2. Kanjurmarg offer better oppourtunities for mix use hub. 3.Thane site being uncertain in nature creates doubt for future developments. Therefore, Kanjurmarg becomes the most potential site among all the three due to its potential of becoming a hub in coming years.

10

3. Three Potential Sites

“ In 5-6 years, Kanjurmarg will

become the interchange zone for Metro lines and if you look at the routes, then commuters from the distant suburbs of MMR like Badlapur and Ambernath can come here and board another Metro, either to south Mumbai or to the western suburbs. Through one site, we shall be able to provide easy connectivity to different parts of the city,” said an MMRDA official.

2.1 MODULAR-SHIP Modular-ship is a project that focuses on a mixeduse housing(smaller township) based on the residents requirements with modular design that can be replicated easily. The construction methods are applied in such a way that each unit or entire housing community buildings can be easily moved from one location to another location so that within days of time the resident shall be able to live in the same unit after relocation of the building. The current situation of covid-19 for months is forcing people to stay inside their homes more than ever. This requires a better planning of interiors and designing them where limited space is used for multiple purposes by all household members. A modular mixed-use building aims to combine three or more uses into one structure such as residential, commercial, retail, cultural, and entertainment. Whatever the combination, it brings together several uses within either one building or a small area.

Project Type: Architecture Design Project Year: 2020 Duration: Semester 7 (Group Work) Group: Shreya B, Mitali T, Nidhi M, Urvi J Site Location: Seawoods, Navi Mumbai 22

The site is located in Seawoods Navi Mumbai, it’s connected to the palm beach road from one side surrounded with residential area, mixed used buildings and the NRI complex towards the south is the water body with mangroves the whole site area is surrounded with trees and a small water body on the site. Major part of the site context consists of residential buildings.

WHY TRIANGLULAR GRID? Triangular grid have been used in modern archultecutre which help us to design flexible structural system. Assembly of different module and form of structure with repitation and combination. All the modules were developed such that the triangular grid is projected outwards. The edge of grid hence becomes the interesting triangular balcony spaces.

Site is abundunt with greens open pockets for social interactions. These pockets come in with sit outs as well as with amenities for the users. Each block have public spaces on the ground floors so that the users will have eyes on the site at all times. Enough parking spaces for both car as well as bike/bicycle. -The site is divided in to two major parts. The public sector and the housing sector. -There are four entries provided, including the pedestrian entry access from the service road side. -The waterbody has public attractions around like library and open gym. -The central walkway/emergency vehicular way divides the site equally for access to each part of entire site.

-The modules make up the building and are placed on site in staggered manner in plan as well. -The central pathways around each building creates attraction and socialising points for users. -The social activities and relaxing landscape is provided at such interactive corners.

25

The site has both public and private zones. Both come with abundunt green areas that act as small pockets for social interactions. Each balcony of all modules overlooks into these small green pockets and provide relaxing environment. Apart from the buildings, the design has amenities like club house, kids play area, open gym as well as open sit out spaces near the water body. The central walkway/ emergency vehicular way divides the site equally for access to each part of entire site.

2.2 COWORKING SPACES: a place to unite Coworking is a recent movement in workspaces, having developed as a formal working style. It describes the act of sharing a physical workplace and office resources with other people who are not employees of the same company that-is having similar common shared activities but performing then in their own provided space. The program was proposed in Khandeshwar, Navi Mumbai. It was right adjacent to the creek. The site included some part of the waterbody inside the side. The Khandeshwar railway station was within 1Km away from the site making it the perfect location for working group to access easily. It is between the extreme built environment and open play grounds and barren space. The design program included spaces like main co-working unit, cafe, seminar rooms, podcats rooms, auditoriums and library. These were divided into two parts, one for only co-working users and another accessible for both public and co-working users. The structure is divided accordingly considering two frames for each part i.e the working part and public part. Spatial factors investigated include openness, proximity to others, flexibility, privacy, distraction, and territoriality, presence of landscapping, daylight, and window views were considered before hand.

On the one hand we find very densely packed residential units in a linear manner facing the back to the site, while on the other hand we have open lands of playgraounds and barren land. Also the creek adjacent plays an very important role as it affects the climatic aspect of the structure. The part of creek that enters the site is treated according to the requirements of the user.

Exploded axometric showing interlocking of frames

34

Architecture Design Portfolio 2017-2022

The concept comes from the idea of having the vertical transition separate from the actual working part of the building. The views and its site analysis was the reason of its orientation.

The concept was finalised creating a ‘Frame’ with only vertical transition on edges of the structure.

The interlocking of similar Frames was considered keeping common areas on ground floor. The frames varied in heights and length to make interesting form.

35

Two Frames are alloted for public access and are given on lower floors, while other two higher Frames are purely for the coworking blocks. The entry to the blocks are common, creating larger covered semiopen spaces on the ground floor, which are alloted to be used by public for community programs and other functions.

3.1 VERSATILE SPACES FOR ALL Dadar, which is a key connecting point for central and western part of Mumbai. The scale of crowd is huge, and the moment it steps on to the road, it faces a space crunch as a result of encroached footpaths. It not only has high rise structure, but also is amalgamation of low rise structures with very immediate interaction with its streets. The site is located in Dadar such that it is central part of both, high rise and low rise, skyline of the surroundings. The project brief was providing a multifuctional public structure with Library as the main element. The other public activities were Digital convenience centre, Learning centre, Seminar rooms, Art galleries, Day care centre and Cafe

All these public spaces with variety of activities and user groups were considered while conceptualisation. The spaces imagined are an amalgamation of different styles with much inspiration from postmodernism, brutalism, and ancient architecture.

The site plays the important role in the placement of the activities around. Only one accessible road is available. The view from the site were focusing on the surrounding rigid strcutures, but the side with low rise structures had a farther view. Site being very near to a junction, becomes very noisy and continously active throughout the day, so bufferes around the site were placed accordingly. The main street was enchroached by the vendors and small shops creating hustle right next to the site entry road.

development of form

The form was decided on the basis of various activities. the activities were classified in two blocks-- a silent zone and a hustler zone. The orientation was decided according to the views to and from the site. Then was raised and placed on top of each other. The silent zone (library and learning centre) was kept above the hustler zone (digital centre, cafe and seminar room). To add lesser ground coverage yet have open terrace cafes and more coverage above, slant walls were added to the main three walls which protrude outwards progressively.

The project broadly focused on creating a natural experience for user as well as the birds. The project included spaces like bird enclosures, lounge zones, hospital facilities for birds and residential block for the workers. The central “Free Flight Aviary” is the main feature of the design. A lush ambience of tress with waterbody below creates a natural home to all the birds. It allows them to be open to the sky yet be enclosed by a thin net that does not allow them to escape away. 46

4.1 WHATS HAPPENING IN BKC? an urban planning project The project brief was to smartly plan the existing E block of BKC complex and come up with solutions to the existing problems faced there. BKC being majorly a commercial area rich in resources and technology is connected to ongoing metro line 3. This factor was taken as a important feature of the site and was planned accordingly. The project acknowledges many existing features and its problems. Further it describes how urban design parameters were used to plan and improved area. BKC sits on marshy land on the north side of Mahim Creek and either side of the Mithi River. The aim to develop BKC: To decongest and decentralize south Mumbai. Its central location, ample availability of land and close proximity to the airport has made it one of major office hub location in the country. Road networking ( Easy accessibility) - Excellent connectivity to South Mumbai, Central suburbs & Metropolitan area of Thane. The Vision is to create a more accessible and liveable BKC, with respect to the context, including the Mithi river front development, tackling the problems of congestion and introducing lively spaces . Opportunities - BKC is an emerging well planned real estate commercial area, easing the burden on South Mumbai. - By 2030, it is expected to be the most significant commercial area in the entire Mumbai city. - The future focused on three key aspects i.e. Liveability, Workability and Sustainability. - The buildings in E block that will soon be listed for redevelopment. These include offices of central and state government bodies, as well as private organisations and multinational corporations. - To reduce the public density on the road, the travelator is supposed to be designed interconnecting all the new developed structures. -Mithi River beautification work includes a garden development to beautify the landscape, pave a block road, build stormwater drains, illuminate the area, installation of seats and dustbins.

Challenges - As a part of the mithi river development project : 1. The river sections were widened and deepened along its complete stretch. 2. Retaining walls were built to stop the water from overflowing into the developed area. - Despite of all these improvements the mithi river continues to flood and it brings the city’s road and rail network to a standstill. - Provision of social amenities should come up simultaneously with the development and disposal of lands. - The existing road over-bridge at Sion station is too narrow. It needs to be widened suitably in time. - The existing sewer outlets should be immediately tackled by Bombay Municipal Corporation so that the nuisance of the untreated sewage flowing into the creek would be stopped at once.

5.1 EXPOSITION SPACE The project was to design an exposition hall using portal frames. The goal was to create a charming, protected area that is exposed to nature from the inside and serves as an exhibition hall. Exploration and 3D visualisation were used to carry out the design. Portal Frames are used as the load bearing elements in this long span roof system. The construction is made even more streamlined and light due to the utilisation of steel components joined by lattice frames. The parallel portal frames are joined by steel purlins on top that support an opaque sheet that serves as a covering. Polycarbonate sheets are mostly used on the structure’s skin. Better bending capabilities are offered by polycarbonate sheets. A crucial region for receiving the most natural light and ventilation is the monolithic elevation, which is joined by glass frames.

6.1 PARK FOR ALL What is landscaping? “A profession and academic discipline that employs principles of art and the physical and social sciences to the processes of environmental planning, design and conservation, which serve to ensure the long-lasting improvement, sustainability and harmony of natural.” The site located in Sanpada. It is in the amidst of the residential areas from three sides while Palm beach road adjacent to the creek. This puts a an interesting point as it is located around the residential area. Site analysis includes the analysis and description of all aspects (or layers) of the composition of a chosen landscape or landscape design in a known context. Not only its form is involved, but also its function and the way it has been made. As a result we acquire specific knowledge from an determined object in a determined context.

6.2 SAFE CHILD: pediatric clinic The integration of design details such as the shape, size, colour, and light can change our thought of how spacious a place is and these elements are responsible for the feeling and emotion of that space. This project tried to create visual illusions that change the way the user look space and its spaciousness. Colour is an integral element in my work, although is rarely the leading component in the drawing. The colour responds to the spatial qualities and mood evoked by the drawing. This site for this project is located in Panvel, Navi Mumbai. The project was to design interiors for Paediatric clinic. The children are the primary users of the space and hence the arrangement of spaces are provided with environment that they are makes them less concentrated on their medical condition and create playfulness around. The concept for the design was ‘strips’. Strips create an illusion of extra length. As the module to be desinged was very compact, this illusion helped to neglect that structural element. As discussed above, the interiors plays major role in influencing the mood of the user. Therefore the colour tones are used such that they create harmony around. The adjacent drawing suggests the colour tones and varoius elements used the different spaces of the clinic which was designed. 7.1 KUMARTULI: creative space of local artisans of Kolkata In the narrow alleys of Kumartuli, traditional artisans give shape to the divine. Tucked inside north Kolkata, Kumortuli is a maze of lanes and by-lanes where deft hands mould clay to give shape to divine forms. Rows of idols in various stages of completion stood inside the dark workshops. It is amazing to see how the craftsmen painstakingly create the marvellous idols out of mere clay. The space becomes lively during the three months during Durga Pooja, these rudimentary frames will emerge as the ten-handed Goddess Durga standing over a lion in her demon-slaying pose.

Plan of The Durga Charan Banergee Street, Kumartuli

Besides meeting the domestic demand for celebrations this hub caters to the international market too.About 528 families of idol-makers live today spread on a contiguous area of about 1.3 hectares in an old quarter of the city of Kolkata. Moreover, the colony is visited by numerous skilled and semi-skilled artisans who migrate from the larger city-region during the peak months of production. Kumartuli is a live example of a creative cluster. This documentation portrays the richness of the space due to the creative craftsmen and there works. As it has very closely packed yet very impactful surroundings with many different activities that take place through out at the same time.
