ABOUT sP+a AND ITS WORKS The principal architect and founder of Mumbai based studio sP+a is SAMEEP PADORA. He is also one of the founding members of the Bandra Collective, an organization of architects involved with the design of public spaces in Mumbai.Sameep Padora completed his undergraduate studies in Mumbai in 1996 followed by post-graduate studies at the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University in 2005.Sameep is also a member of academic councils for a number of architectural schools in India and is a member of the National Technical Committee of Habitat for Humanity, India. The practices has received numerous awards including Wallpaper Magazine’s award for single-family house of the year. His studio’s work has also received commendations at the AR Emerging Architecture Awards and has been nominated for the BSI Swiss Architecture Award. In 2017 sP+a won two prestigious international competitions, for the National War Museum at India Gate in Delhi and the Maharashtra Nature Park In Mumbai. In 2019 sP+a won archdaily’s building of the year award for Maya Somaiya Library sP+a joins Danish architect Dorte Mandrup on the jury for the 2020 AR Emerging Architecture awards
WORKING AS AN INTERN The environment has open flexibility in working and open design process is considered as a major method in the office in which everyone participates in bringing their own field of knowledge and expertise into discussion. The practice of working in groups is followed which helps in many way, i was able to learn a lot from discussing with other employees and trainees about the project when exchanging our opinions and proposals. Another important feature in the office is that there is no real hierarchy, everyone is responsible of everything. The office is for all to share, to be responsible of and to take care of. At sP+a it is believed that India’s vast breadth of socio-cultural environments require multifarious means of engaging with the country’s varying contexts. The studio’s approach hence is to look to context as a important factor in connecting production process and network’s, appropriating techniques beyond their traditional use. This attitude enables the practice to look at traditional project types, projecting their formal / relational history within the paradigms of current socio-economic forces. The studio structure actively engages with research, collaborations and collective models of practice not as isolated individual formats but as symbiotic streams feeding into each other. It advocate this hybrid model as an alternative to the traditional architectural practice, believing that this enables us to respond to the specificity of the local by evolving methodologies of extreme subjectivity.
3
This report shall give an overview on my learning goals before the start of my internship, as well as an insight onto a research about the internship process and design part, a description of the office and most importantly an illustration of the projects I have worked on within sP+a. The studio has allowed me to evaluate and grow upon my role and development. I express my sincere gratitude to allow me this opportunity to work as an intern and improve in all architectural aspects. I was given oppurtunities that helped me challenge myself and goo a step ahead to met the requirements. This dyanamic nature of studio, the ambition of organisation and the team of super cool architects and co-interns made this journey successful.

Cloud forest aviary focused on the nature of environments that was created for birds. An aviary is a large enclosure for confining birds. Unlike birdcages, aviaries allow birds a larger living space where they can fly. Hence, aviaries are also sometimes known as flight cages. Aviaries often contain plants and shrubbery to simulate a natural environment. The project broadly focused on creating a natural experience for user as well as the birds. The project included spaces like bird enclosures, lounge zones, hospital facilities for birds and residential block for the workers. The central “Free Flight Aviary” is the main feature of the design. A lush ambience of tress with waterbody below creates a natural home to all the birds. It allows them to be open to the sky yet be enclosed by a thin net that does not allow them to escape away.

The design is developed such that the enclosures are(the main bird cages) are staggered creating a distinct visitors path and a service path. The enclosures are then placed across the site with respect to the contours and central free flight aviary. 8

They are placed such that the visitors path and the service paths re differentiated on two different levels. A series of ramps and bridges connects the long continuous visitors path while giving the service path a clear way to cater the birds from the lower floor without actually interacting with the visitor. The grand entrance is marked by the canopy which leads to reception areas. The reception area then continues to the visitors path and another to the free flight aviary. The free Flight aviary is a huge open space with series of alternating columns that hold the roof net above. The green roofs are accessible to view the cages from above and also be closer to the birds.

The section rendered by author was published on the architecture review by sP+a. The article talked about the enhanced features used while designing of the temple of steps. “Sameep Padora has prudently chosen materials, improved on the traditional construction techniques and, more importantly, engaged with the pressing issues of water stress. On the sides abutting the temple, he has created a flight of steps to greet the water while, on the other, he has placed a mild mud bund that allows the water body to merge with the landscape gracefully. The steps create a sense of immediacy with the water and help ritual performance, while the less formed edge and the sandy bottom facilitate water percolation.Padora’s attempt, which marks the early stages of an environmental turn in the design of sacred spaces, remains to be further developed. “ source:https://www.architectural-review.com/places/india/stepchange-balaji-temple-in-bilakalagudur-village-by-sameep-padoraassociates?tkn=1

Section pulished on architecture review The main concern was to provide a space which would marry the socio-cultural expectations of a temple with the ecological framework and dynamics of and around the site. The immediate context of Cotton and chilly farms in the region were fed by a natural canal system which had dried up. The ecological strategy for the temple, thus began with recharging of groundwater. Water overflow from the limestone quarries was led to a lowlying recharge pit or ‘kund’: the banks of which was imagined as a social space, in the manner of a traditional ghat, a flight of steps leading down to a water-body. This negotiation of land and water with steps is a significant part of India’s architectural heritage as is seen in the ghats of the ancient city of Benaras.

Option 02- decks
The intension of creating options with double height spaces was the primary goal, so as to achieve maximum FSI consumed on the same plot of land with the same height of the entire structure overall. The atempt of making spaces that work dually with one common central ground of double height was acheived in interlock technique. While the deck option focused on the double height space over dining area creating very interesting interactive spaces with floating bedrooms and bridges connecting each bedroom on differnet floors

The interlock creates double height living space. the stairs take the user to the upper lounge area while below the lounge area we have kitchen. The Facade being long glass panels across creates emense way for light and ventilation. The aim was to create double height spaces that inscrease th FSI consumption.
The Deck option creates an interesting opening at the dining area, the bedroom on the upper floor over looks into the dinning area. A long bridge connects the almost floating bedroom with the lounge area. This helps in defining public and private spaces separately.

P FIERY NATRAJ- THE MATERIALThe small but powerful Bronze Sculpture titled “The Fiery Nataraj” by Indian master sculptor the Late Meera Mukherjee represents the connection between the arts and spirituality. The Fiery Nataraj depicting the descent of the mighty Ganges from the Heavens to the Earth, through the notted and matted hair of Lord Shiva, holds particular significance to Matra Ashraya, since Lord Shiva dwells in the Himalayas where the Collection Museum is located. The Sculpture pays respects to the mighty Ganges, who was named such/took form/came into existence in Devprayag as she descended from Heaven. FIERY NATRAJ SHIVA 108 KARANAS- THE SOUND AND MOVEMENTSThe Shiva Tandava Stotram is considered the most effective and powerful Shiva mantras of all times. It consists of 15 quatrains and 1tricet, with 16 syllables per line. The lyrical alliteration and pronunciation creates resounding waves within both, the Reciter as well as the Listener of this hymn. Sound, Rhythm and Silence: The everlasting, constant sound of the Ganges at the Site as she crashes against the Rocks on the Ghats, eliciting aprimordial sound, complementing the silence/pauses of the 1008tiles(instone/metal/terracotta) on the Facade. Movement and Pause: The indicative fluid movement of the Nataraj in the 1008 statictiles and the larger summative Dynamic form, inspired by Indian Sculptor, the Late Meera Mukherjee. Godrej TDD is a town planning development project in Vijayawada. The project focuses on the various typologies of residential blocks and their relation with the surroundings. The site is located on the edges of dense forest plot which have its impacts on the micro climate. The design and alignment of the plots is given such that they follow this climatical aspect. The second major design consideration is the greens spill-out spaces provided at regular intervals across the site making it user friendly and provoking socio cultural activities. 71
