Hello! I’m Shreya I’m a 21-year old architecture student who believes that architecture transcends beyond the built form; it presents itself as visual poetry, a montage of emotions, expressions and complexities that embody the very act of ‘being’. Architecture to me is an art of passion, and I aspire to craft spaces that evoke experientiality and trigger a greater meaning.

This evolutionary computational process, coupled with an urban tissue undergoing transit oriented development, is aimed to develop novel networks and morphologies synthesized into high density urban models of mixed-use.

Project: Institutional Centre Site: Handicrafts museum, Delhi Semester: 5 Ye a r : 2 0 1 8

The studio brief aims to create a basic understanding between an existing contextual trigger that is functional in nature; and the design of an institution. Placed in the National Handicrafts and Handlooms museum, the project aims to break the existing barriers of institutional design and to bridge the gap between the existing cultural dichotomy of the crafts museum.

INKSCAPE: THE CENTRE Inkspace: A writing arts centre that celebrates the idea of writing, flanked with functions that bridges the gap between the written and spoken word with the idea of sensory stimuli.

Responsive to the existing context of the crafts museum, the institutional development looked at elements such as juxtaposition of formal functions, unconventional spaces that trigger the artistic mind - hence the angularity. These angles serve as a representation of the mind, wavering back and forth, inducing tension across a linear frame of spatiality.

23

This project explores the idea of spatial connectors; a bridge connecting not only the gap between two spaces, but between two functions. The public realm is shifted to the terrace level and uses enablers such as landscaping, standardization and aesthetics to sculpt the experientiality. The use of temporary partition walls across an open space to showcase graffiti art. These visual triggers serve as points of interest across the realm, thus invoking footfall onto the site. The institution was understood to be a project bound by its formalities, yet the idea of sensory triggers through unconventional art, media and poetry was what broke its construct, creating a hollistic space for learning and development, bound by its spatiality.

Architecture is generally understood as a visual and material art form, a s p a t i a l f r a m i n g o f h u m a n e x i s t e n c e a n d a c t i v i t i e s . H o w e v e r, w e d w e l l i n time as much as in space, and architecture mediates equally our relationship with this mysterious dimension, giving it its human measure. In recent architecture, design has prioritized an engagement with time through its creation of temporary and highly flexible structures. There has however been less focus on how the design of such temporal spaces might impact the experience of time of the people who inhabit them. The desire to catch the moment and to leave something behind is part of the creative process. The push and pull of design and construction, and the hard realities of a d e s i g n t e a m w o r k i n g i n a c o m p e t i t i v e e n v i r o n m e n t t o ‘ f i n d t i m e ’, c a n b e achieved through identification of tools of temporality that can help in triggering a temporal experience, for places and duration are integral c o m p o n e n t s o f t h e e x i s t e n t i a l e x p e r i e n c e i t s e l f.
