WE SHALL NEVER HARBOR LAZINESS OR INDOLENCE AS FAR AS SPIRITUAL PRACTICES, SCRIPTURAL STUDIES, SELF RESTRAINT AND SELFLESS SERVICE TO THE WORLD IS CONCERNED

In great scriptures of the world 4 ways in which soul rejuvenation takes place is mentioned. They are:

1)

SPRITUAL PRACTICES

2)

SCRIPTURAL STUDIES

3)

SELF RESTRAINT

4)

SELFLESS SERVICE TO THE WORLD

1) SPIRITUAL PRACTICES: It is improper that we ignore worship of Almighty God in our daily schedule of activities. Even if our psyche does not get focused fully yet we should make spiritual practices or Sadhana a daily routine. Whenever anyone attains soul energy its basis has been worship of God with faith on a daily footing. It does not matter if we worship Almighty God who is all pervasive, neutral full of justice and who showers happiness or sadness on us based on what type of good/vile actions we execute only for 15 minutes. Yet we should worship him daily even if it means doing so while we are awake or sleeping. The question is how inclined are we to meditate and worship God. Even if one’s attraction for the spiritual path is very little yet bliss keeps increases as days pass by.

True meaning of meditation does not include superficial worship rituals or praying to the Lord to fulfill our selfish desires. The meaning of Upasana or meditation means sitting in the vicinity of Almighty God. If we sit near fire we get warmth from it and if we sit near a huge slab of ice we get coolness from it. Thus true worship and meditation on Almighty God increases divinity in us along with godliness. The ultimate goal of all worship/prayer is to render divine our aspirations and behavior. If this actually happens man conjoins to that great Cosmic Divine Power and thus gets endowed with infinite divine energy.

True meditation takes place when worship rites conjoin to divine sentiments. Even if we execute very little amount of worship rituals yet there should be a deep yearning in the devotee’s soul to merge into the cosmic divine form of Almighty God. One should have deep yearning akin to a mother for her beloved baby, a cow harbors towards its calf, a butterfly rushing madly towards a flame lamp etc. Thus a divine miracle ensues.

Worship rite is one aspect. True spiritual pursuit involves rendering divine our life, behavior and thinking process. If we orient all our action in the direction of pleasing Almighty God our lives will bloom with sacredness and good management. Rishi Valmiki previously was a dacoit but when he commenced spiritual practices albeit in a very immature manner yet a miracle ensued. The credit goes to his intense regular spiritual endeavor. Thus all of us must give due weight age to spiritual practices on a daily basis.

2) SCRIPTURAL STUDIES: We all use soap to clean dirty clothes. Similarly scriptural studies that help us self introspect purify our dirty minds. Man’s specialty is his intellect and rendering our thoughts apt and cultured is dependent on scriptural studies. Today there is a dearth of great saintly people the world over. Since they lack enough time it is difficult to get their sacred association called Satsang. Under these circumstances scriptural studies help overcome this lack of saintly association. Just as due to lack of availability of food/water it is difficult to keep the body alive similarly if scriptural studies are ignored we cannot render our soul advanced and well balanced. No doubt it is best that illiterate people listen to spiritual lectures and discourses. Just as wealthy people earn good merits while donating food items during times of famine similarly it is the righteous duty of saintly people who have mastered great scriptures to read aloud great sacred literature so that those who are illiterate can hear these. Thus the saintly person attains good merits for becoming instruments in sanctifying the souls of those who cannot read and write.

Swadhyaya or scriptural studies involves either reading sacred books or listening to discourses given by great self realized masters/Gurus. Yet know for sure that reading or hearing just about anything under the sun is not Swadhyaya. True benefits of studying scriptures encompass its positive influence on the direction of life after due mental reflection and meditation. We must daily read such literature that inspires us to live lives of greatness and glory.

3) SELF RESTRAINT: Self restraint/control is the fount of infinite energy. Although man has attained a lot yet he can gain much more. In the absence of self control and restraint man wastes his energy resources and thus there is no question of him attaining newer things. Self restraint means obstructing

wastage of energy in dangerous and unimportant tasks and instead utilizing the same for fulfilling great tasks full of human glories.

The arena of self restraint is very widespread. It includes mastering the 5 sense organs, sanctifying one’s behavior, time management and rendering wholesome one’s thoughts and emotions. With such a broad vision in mind all devotees must imbibe self restraint. http://www.shriramsharma.com/true_resolutions_and_oath_of_neo_creation_of_this_era.htm It is most required that we control and master our sense organs. Acts like eating like a glutton and lewd lustful sexual passion must be seriously controlled. Along with this we must master our thoughts and inner nature. In order to obstruct our thoughts straying in erroneous directions we must ceaselessly imbibe great pious thinking. If the intellect is vile our thoughts too will be vile and if our intellect is sacred our thinking too shall be pious. This world is full of dualities. Thus our intellect must weigh the pros and cons of any incident taking place in our lives. Thus in moments of anger, instigation and rank emotionalism a balanced intellect will not act one sided and thus we can face all good/bad situations calmly. Even tiny incidences generally agitate us all. Thus we face a downfall due to wrath, passion, hatred, enmity etc. When we act rashly we do not even for a moment think of the dire consequences we shall have to face in future and thus we marry in haste and repent at leisure. The chief aim of control of the psyche is to give up childish thinking and render it mature, potent and serene. True self restraint involves both controlling the 5 sense organs and mastering our psyche by rendering it sacred and focused.

There are varied forms of self restraint. Examples are marking the time span for sexual continence, controlling taste buds via fasts, observing either silence or controlled speech, time management, wealth management, with an alert mind creating balance of thoughts and sentiments, as per tenets of Indian Culture rendering our needs moderate etc. Thus all who follow this shall benefit both materially and spiritually.

4) SELFLESS SERVICE: In order to gauge how much a person has progressed spiritually he/she should be tested for his/her yearning to serve society selflessly. Selfless service is that fire which tests the purity, sanctity, generosity and spiritual stature of our consciousness. It has been prescribed that 1/4th of our life span should be used for selflessly serving society called Vanaprastha before renouncing the material world and taking up asceticism or Sanyas. Those who shun selfless service and aspire to advance spiritually merely via meditation and other spiritual practice are akin to a child who wishes to graduate to high school from kindergarten directly bypassing all grades in between. Selfless service to society is but the external manifestation of pious thinking. The symbolic proof of purity of one’s soul is selfless service and devotion to spiritual ideals.

Selfless service is directly related to self contentment. When we work for the welfare of others without us wanting anything in return it immediately manifests as self contentment. The latter is that Soma Juice mentioned in Indian Mythology called Puranas drinking which Rishi-Munis entered the portals of divinity. Those who achieve self contentment via great sacred actions never undergo dissatisfaction. From society’s standpoint selfless service has great utility value and this gives an opportunity to fallen souls to rise higher up in life and poverty stricken class get both material and spiritual happiness. Sharing joy and sorrow of others no doubt is Spiritual Bolshevism. If wealthy people share even a small portion of their comforts with the poor fraternity their (rich class) non required burden is lessened and also gets that joy which a person suffering from stomach illness gets by emitting foul air from the body. In this manner if the rich share even a little bit of sorrow of those who are poor the latter’s hardships can be overcome in a big way. http://www.shriramsharma.com/true_resolutions_and_oath_of_neo_creation_of_this_era.htm If one person possesses salt and another person possesses sugar and both do not share these with each other their food is rendered tasteless. But if both share things they can eat both salty and sweet food with taste. In material communism there is a cry for sharing wealth. In spiritual communism world humans must share their joys/sorrows like closely related family members. An active manifestation of this is selfless service to society. Service is very much a part of good ethical behavior, it is the main step of spirituality and it can be termed the pillar of world society’s progress and all round development. The sacred actions of cooperation and congregationalism can bloom forth only in the midst of intellect based generosity. Only then can various countries and hence the entire world become prosperous and advanced.

It has always been stressed that no lethargy should be shown towards spiritual practices, scriptural studies, self restraint and selfless service. Laziness and indolence strangles our life force and hence we must run miles away from them. They are more destructive when they cross all limits so as to deter progress in life. Hence one should not give even an iota of a chance to these foes dwelling in our psyche by rooting them out totally.

We should be very firm and steadfast so that we remain disciplined. Laziness and indolence can be uprooted by taking vows of not eating food before offering worship/prayer to God, not sleeping without studying sacred scriptures, atoning for not observing self restraint and punishing oneself for ignoring selfless service to the world.
