CASE STUDY - 02 JAWAHAR KALA KENDRA

INTRODUCTION: Established in 1982, Bharat Bhawan is a centre for innovative creativity, pursuit of classics and tradition and wide participation in a new cultural upsurge. One of the most unique National Institutes in India, Bharat Bhawan is a centre for performing and visual arts.

LOCATION: Bharat Bhawan is in the Shamla Hills. The site is on a gently sloping plateau overlooking the lake in Bhopal.

TOPOGRAPHY: The site has gradually sloping contours towards the lake.

INTRODUCTION: Jawahar Kala Kendra ia an art and craft centre in Jaipur. The centre provides space to the cultural and spiritual values of India and displays rich craft heritage. The centre in contemporary types is also venue of theatrical and musical performance Museum was inspired from city planning of Jaipur .PROPOSED ACTIVITIES: 1.

8. Classical music as well as folk music.

9. Bhawan also hosts various artists and writers under its artist-in-residence program at the ‘Ashram’.

CASE STUDY – 01 TRIBAL ART MUSEUM, BHOPAL • The museum is designed to create built fabric which the tribal communities could identify with extend and evoice, to repeat themselves and express their own ideas and the way of life with ease and spontaneity.

• Architecture of museum is inspired by tribal rhythms, geometries, materials, forms and aesthetics.

• It is an underground art gallery which exhibits work of artist Maqbool Fida Hussain.

• The cave-like underground structure is made of multiple interconnected domes covered with mosaic tiles.

•The contemporary architecture of the structure draws an ancient and natural theme.

• Domes are inspired by the shells of tortoises and by soap bubbles.

NEED FOR SUCH A CENTRE

I would be conceptualizing and proposing a centre for art lovers where experiential and interactive learning would be encouraged.

The basic thought that drives my idea of ‘centre for art lovers’ is that of its creative users.

And this is what sets the centre apart from any other educational institute because for a creative thinker or a designer every space has to be designed to foster creative thinking

.

▪ To provide a well designed space which would foster creative thinking.

INTRODUCTION ‘Architecture is a visual art, and the buildings speak for themselves’ quotes Julia Morgan. There are three forms of visual art - Painting is an art to look at, Sculpture is an art you can walk around, and Architecture is an art you can walk through states Dan Rice.

Art has important contribution in architecture. But buildings today are islands of well designed elements and scattered spaces whereas they should be a coherent and flowing story.

For example: A long straight road has little impact because the initial view is soon digested and becomes monotonous. The human mind reacts to contrast, to the difference between things and when two pictures are in the mind at same time, a vivid contrast is felt and the experience is felt in a deeper sense.

Design must shape and perhaps more importantly evoke an emotional touch. Hence there is a need for a tool with which human imagination can begin to mould the experience into a coherent drama.

There is one striking and rather unexpected difference between formal and informal design. In formal composition, what we see at first glance is what we get.

Informal design may lack the obvious grandeur, but it can offer a far complex experience, what Gordon Cullen in ‘ The Concise Townscape’ defined as serial vision or what the clever architects who employed it in Disneyland called it as ‘Arrival Sequences’. Formal design is a static composition that works strictly in three dimensions. The dynamic compositions of informal design add the Fourth Dimension – THE ELEMENT OF TIME. Gordon Cullen in his theory has stated examples of elements and factors making up the built environment at a townscape level which helps to experience architecture through time. Whereas through this seminar an attempt has been made to study the principles of the theory serial vision and identify the elements and factors at building level that affect time and help us experience architecture

through it.

INTERVAL

▪ Combination of various events form interval.

▪ Order of the events affect the interval of time. With combination of different events different orders can be achieved which in turn affects the experience and its type.

▪It is about the existing and arriving spaces.

▪It is described as what one might see and experience as one walks through a sequence of spaces.

▪A complete experience where each part of sequence draw a new and changing composition each one blending is next.

▪The purpose of this art is to take all the elements that create the built environment and weave them in such a way that drama is released.

▪The process starts when one walks from one end of the plan to another, at a uniform pace, which provides a sequence of revelations. A sequence where even progress of travel is illuminated by series of sudden contrasts and so an impact is made on the eye, bringing the plan to life

We perceive time as present

The sequence in New Delhi emphasizes the role of levels and screening in serial vision where the picture could have been one but reproduced four different times with different perspectives, with each view enlarging the centre of the previous view and bringing us near to the terminal building creating four separate and unique views.

The significance of all this is that although the pedestrian walks through particular stretch of land at uniform speed, the scenery of plane is often revealed in series of jerks or revelations. This makes the pedestrian experience space on themselves and creates an ever lasting impression.

EXPERIENTIAL AND INTERACTIVE LEARNING CENTRE FOR ART LOVERS It was designed to house athletes for the games.500 housing units were designed as group housing in 35 acres. In the Asiad housing, the urban pattern of Jaipur and Jaisalmer has been explored. A network of streets and squares with vehicular access at the either end of the site, its morphology resembles a traditional village.

The concept was based upon a sequence of open spaces linked by narrow, shaded pedestrian streets and containing both recreational and commercial activities. Cluster planning was adopted for this project. The central spine of the layout was reserved for pedestrian courts and streets of various clusters.

The streets were consciously broken up into visually comprehensible units, often with gateways, so there are pauses, point of rest and changing vistas.

Entrance gateways with linked upper terraces punctuate the sequence of courtyard and garden spaces. The streets become spaces for encounter between people and the squares offer a sense of neighborhood. The central squares forms a community space for the housing units.

The cubic solids and voids are characteristics of the Indian urban fabric.

EXPERIENCE 1: As we move along the village the gateway marks the significant entry to each group of housing units. The first view obtained is that of the huge gateway which also restricts the view of the common space formed by the composition of housing units which in turn provides privacy.

Moving ahead of the gateway leads to the central square which reveals another view of the common space.

Series of such cluster forms super cluster where there is a large central community space revealing the final view and thus bringing the whole composition to life.

▪ Levels below datum gives closed, intimate type feeling whereas above datum gives open kind of feeling.

▪ Levels help to break monotony in movement hence creating interest in arriving spaces.

It is a fantastic example of Nature Integrated architecture. The hotel is conceived as a belvedere OPEN AND SEMI-OPEN SPACES on a series of magical views, as an enjoyment in itself. It is build on a magnificent rock which helped to create variety of spaces like open, semi-open, enclosures,etc thus making the journey a complete experience.

RANDOM PLAN

POSITIONING Planning and positioning of the activities can develop a proper circulation pattern developing a link between spaces.

Transition spaces ▪ Transition spaces develop a link between built and unbuilt spaces.

▪ It weaves together different activities thus providing meaning and connection to all spaces.

▪ It leads to different spaces thus revealing a different view every time.

OPENINGS ▪ Play of light and shadow creates dramatic effect.

▪ They can be used to create contrast in path and break the monotony.

EXPERIENCE 2: Moving ahead leads to reception hall through a tunneled passage which gives way to the sit out spaces, pool terraces and the scenic beauty of the nature around on one side and dark linear corridors leading to the suites on the other side.

The land forming isolates various activities and various levels help us draw onward each part of the sequence from an impulse of delight.

LANDSCAPE ELEMENTS

EXPERIENCE 1: The entrance to the hotel was quite dramatic. It was through a straight avenue, then a curve around a small hill, a large hill and something that appeared to be cave at first but was really the reception verandah of the hotel.

The road jigs and bends, and there was a sense of unfolding, or being drawn onwards, through a composition and that gives a feeling ‘I wonder what’s next!’

EXPERIENCE 3: The spaces were connected with long corridors and passages thus making it of linear kind. Openings and punctures were provided at intervals in the corridor that illuminated it and breaked monotony creating sudden contrast and giving feeling of surprise. By retaining the existing natural elements inside the building dramatic effect was achieved which makes the journey interesting.

CONCEPT – SERIAL VISION

▪ Facades, screens can also be used as design elements to create contrast and mark certain spaces.

▪ Circulation pattern itself can be developed by using facades in proper composition.

▪ Series of plantation along the way leads the path.

▪ Trees, shrubs, earth burms,etc can be used to segregate spaces and create spaces as per privacy.

▪ Pavements, and textured surfaces also serve the purpose.

(Galleries to look at the displayed work– learn from the displayed work – tunnel creates a monotonous path making a space of isolation and thus creating an impact on the thinking process helping to generate new ideas.

Tunnel opens into huge open space with variety of design elements in the space (like caves, sit out spaces, and view of the lake) creating sudden contrast from dark to light and thus revealing a new sequence and making it an element of surprise.

Further travel leads to exhibition spaces on a different level thus breaking the monotony of path and creating interest in the movement pattern.

Workshops being on the lower floor creates another sequence giving feeling of what’ s next!

All the workshop spaces are connected to outdoor learning spaces bringing the spaces to life. Decks and the sit out spaces add beauty to the design also developing spaces for informal discussions and interaction.

OPTION 1: Initially considering the visit of people at different time and for different purpose an option was prepared where each activity had different access. But because of it the spaces seemed to had lost its connectivity and the experience lacked link and story.

OPTION 2: Considering the drawbacks of the initial design some refinements were made in the planning and positioning of the activities.

A forced circulation was created through spaces so that proper connectivity could be achieved.

This forced circulation created a flowing story giving a complete experience.

Concept for zoning - Experiencing spaces through serial vision To walk from one end of the plan to another, at a uniform pace will provide a sequence of revelations suggested in the zoning above, reading from right to left. The even progress of travel is illuminated by series of sudden contrast created by openings and connectivity between open and built spaces such that an impact is made on the eye, bringing the plan to live. Thus making it an evocative plan. the slightest deviation in alignment and quite small variations in projections have a disproportionally powerful effect in the third dimension.

The tunnel is illuminated by lights coming in from the slits giving sharp light and thus creating tension in space
