Where is 2011 going? FRIDAY NIGHT AND ONBOARD Friday night club has been very successful with many new faces appearing over the summer, and now it’s not just the kids coming along -‐ adults are joining in too as not only is there general sailing coaching, but race training as well. A huge thank you to all the helpers who come on Fridays, with a special thank you to Joe Smith who has given up a lot of Ame and effort to make these sessions happen. The Onboard scheme has also proved very successful with BreF out Onboard coordinator working very hard to introduce new children to sailing through our links with local schools. We are delighted that this is going well and hope this conAnues to be a lucraAve endeavor for the future.

Another Update from Rob Watson and it is almost September! We have had a difficult time at the Club with security issues over the Summer and your committee are taking this very seriously. Nick Waters has led a sub-committee which came up with various proposals and a course of action has been decided upon by the Main Committee. It has been very difficult to balance the need to increase security without affecting the unique atmosphere of the Club. The biggest contribution we can all make is to take responsibility and be more vigilant; ensuring that strangers are always politely challenged and that we actually lock up after ourselves. Hopefully this will provide a deterrent but if anyone has any good ideas, please let us know...Enough ranting! With water levels at their lowest for about four years, we need STW to give us back our pond. Unfortunately, water levels in the Dove and , presumably, energy costs are not helping too. Again, Nick Waters is in constant communication and, hopefully, we will soon see an improvement. Hope to see you all on the water soon. Peter E SHSC Commodore

Once again I’d like to thank the many people who give their Ame freely to help to run the sailing school at Staunton Harold. All of our instructors and helpers volunteer to help during their weekends, evenings and even their holidays simply because they enjoy it. We are very lucky to have such a large team of instructors – bigger than many commercial sailing centres – and that number has just got bigger. “Well done!” to the 6 new DIs we have fresh off the course this Summer -‐ ALL of them have already volunteered at least 2 days during the summer training week. Thank you. 2011 has seen the re-‐introducAon of the Level 3 course Those of us who have been instrucAng long enough will remember it from the old days. In fact a Level 3 student was one of my first ‘clients’ as a paid instructor in my first summer job – I got to follow him round in my Laser all day – great fun! The Level 3 course which we ran at Staunton Harold over 5 evenings during May and June was just as much fun. We ran the course around what the students wanted to do which meant spinnakers, spinnakers and more spinnakers! We can tailor the course to meet the needs of the students, the only real requirement is that it builds on the Level 2 skills and introduces some of the skills from the advanced modules – spinnakers (!), racing and seamanship skills. It certainly fills the gap between finishing the Level 2 course and being confident enough to sail alone on a Saturday aXernoon or Friday evening. The next step is to run some of the advanced modules. We already have one booked in the calendar – Chris Cousins is going to run the ‘Performance Sailing’ course on 12/13th November. I’d like to run a Seamanship course before the end of 2011 and possibly another Level 3 if we can fit it in. I’m really keen to help club members progress further in their sailing and racing, especially those who have just learnt to sail and need a bit of extra guidance, which is where I’ll be moving my focus next year. This brings me nicely to my next point -‐ I need someone to step forward who is willing to organise the day to day running of the beginners’ dinghy courses, adults and juniors. This involves taking and chasing bookings from non-‐members, compiling details of parAcipants for the Senior Instructor and recruiAng instructors and helpers for each session in line with RYA raAos. I’d also like someone to take on the role of ‘Principal’ – this could be the same person or the roles could be split. I plan on maintaining a very acAve role in the sailing school and will conAnue to administer the powerboat courses, order logbooks and cerAficates and keep the kit store in good order. If you think you might be interested in this role, or even part of it -‐ please do get in touch – if you think you might want to give it a go but aren’t sure, I’m willing to try and persuade you further – seriously, this would be a really good Ame to take this on if it’s something you want to do – especially whilst the outgoing postholder is conAnuing with several parts of the role! Our junior courses have been fully booked this year, so if you have children who want to learn to sail next year, please get them booked in early to avoid disappointment. The juniors (and instructors) always have lots of fun – I’m looking forward to the course next week as I type! Powerboat courses have again been popular – these will resume in November – if your name isn’t on my waiAng list and you want to do either the RYA Powerboat Level 1&2 course (complete beginners) or the RYA Safetyboat course (already got PB2 and at least a year’s experience) please email me and I’ll send you details nearer the Ame so you can book a place. We have got a Powerboat Coach in to run another Powerboat Instructor course in the autumn (18 Sept, 2 Oct and 22&23 Oct). There are 6 spaces on this course. It is suitable for anyone with several years of powerboaAng experience who is a very competent and confident driver and powerboat handler. The minimum requirement is PB2, although if you have a safetyboat cerAficate it would be advantageous. Please get in touch if you think you might be interested in this as I suspect spaces will go fast. I think that’s it – if I’ve forgoFen anything, please let me know and I’ll try to remember to include it next Ame! ROSE SAYS PLEASE “KEEP THE DINGHY PARK TIDY AND DON’T FORGET TO USE THE LAWN MOWER REGULARLY!”

SAIL4GOLD REGATTA

FIREBALLS A good season so far for the Balls. Not as much traveling as usual but some quality results!!....... Becky and Tim won Budworth Open on 9th July – last won by a SHSC boat in 2002 by a Foske] and Jones pairing! At the FB worlds in Sligo – Tim Saunders came 7th crewing for Alan Krailing (double Lark na7onal champion) and Richard Pepperdine came 9th crewing for the legendary Tim Rush. We only have a couple of boats at the Na7onals in August; Tim is having another shot with Alan Krailing and regular pairing, Simon Kelsall and Tom Williamson will be looking for a good placing. Back at home, things are steady though s7ll missing regular contribu7ons from Dog and Pete. Hopefully, Autumn will see some of our idisposed, errant, lost or wandering souls return to the fold for some great racing and the Open MeeJng 15/16 October. Rob Watson

In recogniAon of the Weymouth sail4gold event and inspiring sailors to celebrate the 2012 Olympic countdown we held our own regaFa: A great day enjoyed by all combining regaFa and fun races 36 boats took part in 3 regaFa races plus an OpAmist paddling race and a 2-‐up Laser race with Le Mans start They S4G decoraAons, posters and balloons plus the DVD playing in the clubhouse provided a great atmosphere Four of our members had also just returned from Weymouth, having been involved in Race Management at the official Sail For Gold RegaFa and one had taken part so there were lots of tails to tell about the previous weeks racing At the prize giving the winners all received gold, silver and bronze medals and official S4G wrist bands. Everyone felt it was a great day providing lots of fun and entertainment for sailors and non-‐sailors of all ages Despite the occasional drizzle, several visitors enjoyed the spectacle, most probably having heard the radio broadcast the previous day.

BEYOND STAUNTON HAROL D CRUISING UPDATE Hello to all the cruisers out there, hope you are enjoying the summers sailing. Apologies for not making it along to many cruising sessions, but we all lead busy lives. Anyway, as we are nearing the end of the Thursday/Friday summer sailing sessions at SHSC, I think it would be a good idea to bring cruisers together for a bit of a sailing and social bonanza. Please try to make it along to the club on Friday 26th August, and let’s make this a busy evening for cruisers. Hopefully the weather will be perfect for sailing, and it would be nice to finish this off with a BBQ aXer, so please bring along some food to cook. I would like to take the opportunity to get to know you a liFle beFer and to find out what you would like from the club in 2012 (apart from some more water). What can we do beFer to support cruising? Any and all ideas welcome. So, please put the date in you diaries and I hope to see you on the night, if not before! David Ewbank

BAC K PAG E UNUSUAL GOOD NEWS ABOUT DUTIES! I am pleased to be able to report that as a result of over 100 members volunteering for extra duAes plus the intake of new members we have an improvement for the rest of this year over the situaAon reported at the last AGM. Firstly, we can now provide Galley cover for the rest of the season on Saturdays. Some of these Saturdays are now covered and I am asking those members who have not volunteered for their full quota to cover the rest. Secondly, the requirement for frequent sailors to undertake an extra duty can be suspended for the rest of this year. I should emphasize that this improvement is mainly due to those who have volunteered to do extra duAes and our sincere thanks go to those people. It makes all the difference to the running of the Club and is a tribute to the quality of our members and the efforts they put into making it a great Club. It is too early to determine our duty strategy for nest year and this will be reported on at the next AGM. With best regards

HAND BOOKS

NEW KEYS FOR OLD!

There are a good quanAty of 2011 handbooks that haven't been colected from the clubhouse. They'll be there for another fortnight so please collect yours if you haven't already.

As you know, following the recent break in we have had to change the locks at the club so your current club keys will not work. You can either have your key modified by bringing it to the club and seeking out Tim Gray, or by contacAng Di Pepperdine "shscmembership@yahoo.co.uk" and asking her for a replacement.

SECURITY UPDATE -‐ PROTECT YOUR POSSESSIONS! The main improvements, which you will see being introduced over the next couple of months, include: • Strengthen changing room locks – but we’d sAll recommend not leaving valuables there when sailing, as personal valuables are not covered by the club’s insurance policy. AquaPacs are suitable for taking electronic car keys out on the water safely • An “automaAc” lock with keypad on the front door. This can be latched open during busier days, but will prevent unwelcome visitors just walking in on quieter evenings or during training camps • A small personal effects locker for training courses/corporate events in the wet-‐suit store. Note that we don’t believe that these are appropriate (or parAcularly secure) for all members in the clubhouse • Improve the alarm system to include the training boat container and add a confirmaAon indicator to show that it is armed • Improve the web-‐cam for use as a simple CCTV system • Clearly mark the road to clubhouse as “private”, make it easier to chain up the gate and ask all members to get into the habit of locking it. We recognise that this is inconvenient, and we looked hard at various automaAc gates. A good quality one is around £5-‐6k installed, so we want to see if this simple soluAon works first, then discuss at the AGM in November. • Encourage general aFenAon to security. In parAcular, we’d ask everyone to keep the boathouse roller-‐shuFer doors closed whilst the RIBs are on the water, don’t leave club keys lying around and talk (politely) to anyone you don’t recognise around the club – most of them will be newer members and so this is a good way of gevng to know people! • Finally, and perhaps most importantly, OODs and Thursday/Friday Evening safety drivers – you must check that all the club doors are locked and the alarm set before leaving, along with the padlocks on all the gates. If you have to leave before the bar closes, please ensure that someone has agreed to lock up on your behalf – it’s sAll your responsibility to ensure the club is secure. We hope that these measures will help avoid further incidents. If you have any quesAons or comments on this, please discuss with any CommiFee member.
