collaboration
Maman Hamissou
This is a representation of the Design / Build project at the graduate studio level and is intended to record high wind in the Silo City, downtown Buffalo. The design form is inspired from the bell shape, which is 12 feet high and is materialized with pure geometry. As the wind blows, the wood frame will swing and hit the steel tube for double effect: visual effect (A pendulum) and sound effect (A bell). The materials chosen are wood (cedar) and steel. This will integrate the project to the contextual environment, and over time it will have the same appearance with the steel rails and wood rail ties.

Paper Dome: Wear_Stamping & Embossing time
Fall 2012
location
University at Buffalo, NY
collaboration
Chen Lin
This project seeks to examine wear within a context that considers its potential for object enhancement. While the effects of wear are often resisted, the group's position was established at the onset of the investigation to consider the possibilities for wear to enrich an object and in turn, allow for a deeper appreciation of the object within a greater public setting. This investigation began at various paper stamping effects by typewriter. The stamping presented a rich example of wear and became the focus of this inquiry, and later on succeeded by the embossing process along with the production of paper. The final phase was a material construction optimizing use or wear in practice. Its articulation as a oneto-one scale artifact is a further speculation of the diagram stage in threedimensions and shall be situated in a setting of social consequence. Wear: The erosion of material from a solid surface by the action of another material.
The research started from the process of the WEAR of "Stamping" given from typewriter to paper, then moved to the study of "Re-stamping" given to a pre-stamped area.

Thickness: of tectonic hybridity time
Fall 2012
location
University at Buffalo, NY
This project is conducted at two levels from intellectual to physical, as well as two steps from earlier research out of precedent case studies to designs related to further development. All of these processes are simultaneous and intertwined. The research starts from two of the most typical cases illustrating the terms of “thin” and “thick”, along with surveys on materials and tectonics. It moves to the prototyping and designing a new thickened system through the entire semester and ultimately to conclude a synthesis stage of the design proposal. It will lead to a new hybrid of two architectures, becoming the template for a new unprecedented architectural proposal, where tectonic performance and applicability shall be tested, their spatial characteristics measured within this new thickened territory between core and facade. Thickness: It can mean a dimension, a material consistency or a defined volume, architecturally the one defining tectonic unity. In this project, all these meanings shall be assumed with particular focus upon the tectonic territory mediating "core" and "surface".

stone, concrete and steel
This building is bulit of continously site-cast concrete with its reinforce steel frame gradually merging out to shape a truss on top part of it. The lower part of the concrete is encased with stone pieces which disapprear while the steel frame shows up. Hence the steel plays the key role of this structure which has a reversal application from the inside "core" to finally the outside "skin".
Proposal of 3-Dimensional Integration
The stairs are not simply connections between each two layers but also parts of the main body, by chopping off useless parts and leaving behind the stairways. There are mainly two shapes of the stairways, the linear one and the zigzag one. When the stair meets different levers, there are openings on the facade and also the platforms on each level, which provide the connections both horizontally and vertically.
The building has four sides, two of the longer sides integrated with the stair circulation, two of the shorter ones as horizontal connections. This building is built mainly as an enclosed wall structure, which means every part of this building is strongly interactive with the rest parts. It is also like a well fabricated piece, like a shell. There is no longer any core, or facade. There is just one large core, or one continuous facade.
The horizontal sections better illustrate the relationship, i.e. circulation and space, in and among each layers.
The most typical part is circled in blue ovals

In the bottom part, the concrete is poured into and encased by exterior stone pieces. As it grows up, the stone disappears while the concrete shows up. As it continues to grow up, the steel frame which once reinforces inside the concrete is merging out of the concrete and spreading in flat sheet to cover the top part of the building.
Chongming New City time

Unit Architects Team
This project is located at central zone of Chongming New City. Chongming is a "garden" town north to Shanghai. This project is part of Chongming's planning strategy to be a national ecological model, by building this complex of business, residence and landscape. Through research and planning of 4 blocks, we are designing a riverside new city of vigour and livability.
General Site Analysis One Core, Two Axises, Three Blocks, Four Directions This project is located at the core of Chongming New City's central zone. It is next to the central waterfront landscape axis and transportation axis. The urban design of these three blocks will have great influence to the adjacent areas.

Maple Garden Complex time

collaboration
Unit Architects Team
This project is located at City of Changzhou in Yangtze River Delta. It is a competition in building a complex of a top-grade hotel and a state guest receiption hall for the Town of Zhonglou in City of Changzhou. It is at the southeast corner of the Maple Garden and shall concordantly become part of this park as a highlighted landmark.
SITE ANALYSIS: Maple Garden is a new-built public park located at the south neighbor to the Town Hall. The site of this project is highly natural endowed although it has some effect of the context as the already been buildings. Here are the Pros and Cons:
Scenic park with large green coverage
Fine scenery of Town Hall
Distinctive circulation in park Garden club buildings blocks the view of park, Need to resolve the relation with the new complex
The quality of buildings and landscape planned to build
Corner site, easy for administration and circulation Tiny area for design
Unbuilt area Baolong Plaza is under construction
DESIGN ASSIGNMENT: 1. State Guest Receiption Hall For the receiption of distinguished VIP guests. Function includes receiption rooms, meeting / symposium rooms, dining rooms, indoor pool, gym, mini library, wine cellar and luxury suites. 2. Garden Hotel 112 guest rooms including 5 suites fully equipped with high quality facilities to best accomodate every guest, accredited with 4-5 star hotel level.

DESIGN PROCESS: Two buildings have different orientations and axises. The receiption hall faces directly towards waterfront. The garden hotel is carefully examined through its connection with the receiption hall as well as its physical composition. This layout allows the ultimate scenic views for most of this complex.

DESIGN STRATEGY: Maximum utilization of the site: The entrances orientation and the circulation in the complex functionally differentiate two buildings, and enrich the stratification in the entire park.

DESIGN STRATEGY: Enlarge the spacing between the two buildings to create a feeling of real Garden hotel. Make the best of the lake scenery by creating dimensional and spatial composition in this design.
