1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE Unlimited Intrigue within Simpleness

7

The president for this practice is the gene structure. The lines pile up to create the surface and twist a little bit with each other to create volume. It seems like a unlimited 3D stripe with interesting volume space. My design seems very 2D from the elevation and top view, which is arranged in a line. While the space division is very intersting and intriguing within it, the different functions are performed for people to sit, stand and lying down, and also for sheltering and hiding for pedestrians. Intrigue within the simpleness outlooking is the conceptual I developed for this.

1.2 MASS CONTRAST BETWEEN STRAIGHT AND CURVE LIGHT FLOW CHANGES

Row House in Sumiyoshi, Ando Tado

Light only flows down into the center atrium and spread to the rest part of the house. With the contrast of the mass and coldness, slight changes of light is able to be seen on the concrete walls.

DESIGN CONCEPT My design was about to indicate routes by light changes. The only one light source is down from the central top to the lowest ground, from clear bright light to the dim dark light. Different layers of light was shown on the reflection of mass. The forms of the concrete walls also differs obviously from the straight above to curve below, which infuluence the light flows and bring more interesting interactions between light and mass.

1.3 FRAME & INFILL EXCAVATED CUBE MULTI-FUNCTION

15

HOUSE NA, By SOU FUJIMOTO House NA is composed by many staggered platforms. It seems many cuboid of different sizes are assembled together. The form between frame-infill is simple, but the form of assembly is intriguing, which achieved quite well in space performance. This “tree idea for living spaces challenge the conventional residential house.

DESIGN CONCEPT The conceptual idea for my design is an excavated cube. It consists of many cuboids of different sizes but assembled coherently. It is seen as a square from either the side views or the top view. Space devision is intriguing, including the totally open space, half open space, half closed space, and complete closed space. This rule is leading up to the highest cube, from open to closed, which lead people walk through the crowed to the quite.

2.0 HERRING ISLAND. SOMETHING LIKE A PAVILION

20

21

This site is far from the furry landing that not too much people would go directly here. So it is relatively hiden. The riverside view is also pretty good. And there is the North Landing for other boats.

2.1 SITE ANALYSIS

I was impressed by the steep slope that suddenly occured and ended the straight walking path to turn it right. It seems the road dissapeared suddenly. People who walked here are likely to continue going for steps to see directly for what is it below the steep slope, because the turning right road is also leading the path down. Pedestrians want to know what this road leading them to. I choose this site as I want to built something growing up from the low ground to attract pedestrian`s curiosity, which can perform the driven force of leading down in a more straight forward way and attract people to interact with this pavillion.

23

2.1 CONCEPTACLE & Prencedents

For conceptacle, I considered about the two fundamental elements for my design, the power of leading people down and making them feel lost. So the order of leading down hiden within the disorder outlooking is what I want to achieve for my pavillion. When I was making my conceptacle model , I used metal wire as that could easily achieve a very organic shape. This conceptacle was made of the only one wire. When I rubbed it up, the direction of the stripe path went very intriguingly. It seemed disorder, but actually they all came from 1 point and ended at 1 point.

24

SERPENTINE GALLERY PAVILLION, SOU FUJIMOTO Sou Fujimoto described his Serpentine project as “...an architectural landscape: a transparent terrain that encourages people to interact with and explore the site in diverse ways...”

25

2.3 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN I was inspired by Serpentine Gallery Paviilion. My “Secret concept was developed from cloud. Cloud has got great ideas about secret, infinate changes, no shapes, no edges, obscure and hazy. From the concept of cloud, I decided to use repeating units as the main elements. Cloud is composed by the infinite water molecules, though it is able to change into any states and any shapes. Repeating units can easily create something irregular, organic, looks not like an architecture, but actually work very architecturally and objectively to interact with people. And also, the repeating units could create a sense of homoheneous, which can make people fell lost but not in a chaos.

26

2.4 Design Development

- Cloud The three fundamental units that can infill the surface as I knew are triangle, suqare and hexagon. When they apply for space infilling, they become tetrohedron, cube, and hexagonal prism. I tried piling up tetrohedron, but I found them very dense and make too much shading. That was because of the degree of the sides was relatively small, which created much overlapping. Since the size of my unit was large, cube was not approriate that would make the view very transparent. Hexagonal prism is best one among the tested repeating units. This shape also remind me that the concept of this pavillion was cloud and the function was encouraging people going down. When cloud is falling down, it becomes either rain or snow. The structure of snow crystal is also hexagon. So this form made the concept more interesting and poetic.

2.4 Design Development

- Mass The Mass part design also perform the role of leading people down. It is hiden by the cloud structure, only when people go within the cloud pavillion, they would find the entrance. This route leads to a video display room. There are “T shaped daylight gaps, which idea is from my mass drawing that light is penetrating. But the walk tunnels are all halfly shaded by mass material, so it is still dark and people still hard to see who is walking on the way. Jouney is continueing lost.

*These two designs have the same unity that both is leading down. They also have contrasts, which shows on daylight penetrating, and structure of frame and mass.

3.2 FINAL DESIGN - Lost Journey Detail

36

The Lost Journey When people stand on the upper ground, they only see the white branches growing up from the unseen below and also the light gaps. This distinct stunning looking unknown things easily gains curiousity from the pedestrians. For the “cloud”, It is not easy to recognise the entrance only if people walk near to it. Once they entered, the next step is immediately down. So the people would seemed disappeared suddenly for the other people who are still on the upper ground. People who entered would also likely seem to disappear for each other, as the narrow walking tunnels are spreading to different directions, not in one plane, and the rest space are all infilled with the repeating units. These hollow hexagonal frames obscur the views but not hide completely. So people might see someone disappear and then potentially appear again. The routes inculding going up to the front top for a great view of the river side , leading to the two in-air half-enclosed shlter spaces at different layers, leading down to the lower ground and the most sheltered space at the lower ground. The route also leads to the mass secret hiden underground, which only can be accessed by those who entered the framed “cloud”. People will go to the video room follow the only way. All these routed are sending people down at the end.

4.0 Reflection

The tectonic studies were quite interesting and inspiring. It taught me to know and understand the interactions betwen architecture and the site, which largely influneced my final design. And also in terms of architectural design, I had better understandings for the relationships between the three basic architectural forms and the space expressions. I also really enjoyed doing blog research and did learn a a lot from it. Many great precedents have been researched and learned. I am no longer just see the outlook, but also getting to know this architecture, to understand what the the architect wanted to express and why he did this design. During my final project design, I was keeping on progress and developments for the latter 6 weeks. The way of starting a project from a conceptacle was realy interesting and helpful for me to learn a complete architectural desigining process. It made my design to be more logical and rational. Also, my tutor`s feedbacks inspired me a lot, which greatly helped me to review the miss-consideratyions and improve the project to achieve better. Earth is my first architecture studio. I really enjoyed it and also learned a lot from it. I understood Architectural design concerning various considerrations, such as the site, the nartual elements and also the artificial elements. The concept of architecture for me became more clearly and rationaly, which is no longer only about an amazing ourlooking.
