design by nayeli jimenez Greystone Books is committed to reducing the consumption of old-growth forests in the books it publishes. This catalogue is one step toward that goal. We acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, which last year invested $153 million to bring the arts to Canadians throughout the country; the British Columbia Arts Council and the Province of British Columbia; the Government of British Columbia through the Book Publishing Tax Credit; and the Government of Canada for our publishing activities.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE

As I write this note in mid-September 2017 and reflect on the past year, I am struck by what a fine year it has been for Greystone. Our good group of people has remained together, we’ve added strength in the international territories we are developing, and we have had by far the most successful publishing year in the history of Greystone Books. Many of the new books we have released over the past twelve months have outperformed our initial expectations, some by very significant margins. And one stands out from all the rest. The paradigm-changing The Hidden Life of Trees, by German forester Peter Wohlleben, took us all by surprise when we published it in English markets around the world. We knew from the beginning that the book was special, and we hoped we could convince readers to take a look. And they continue to look, proving that good books are still able to find readers. As I look forward to spring 2018, I know that Greystone is continuing to walk the right path. New books by Canadian and select international writers sit comfortably side by side. And many more of both are in the pipeline for future publishing seasons.

Ir an: A destination that is seldom seen by westerners yet often misunderstood. A country that simultaneously enchants and enrages those who visit it. A place where leading a double life has become the norm. In Couchsurfing in Iran, award-winning author Stephan Orth spends sixtytwo days on the road in this mysterious Islamic republic to provide a revealing, behind-the-scenes look at life in one of the world’s most closed societies. Experiencing daily what he calls the “two Irans” that coexist side by side—the “theocracy, where people mourn their martyrs” in mausoleums, and the “hideand-seekocracy, where people hold secret parties and seek worldly thrills instead of spiritual bliss”—he learns that Iranians have become experts in navigating around their country’s strict laws. Getting up close and personal with locals, he covers more than 8,400 kilometers, peering behind closed doors and blank windows to uncover the inner workings of a country where public show and private reality are strikingly opposed.

Stephan Orth is an award-winning journalist and best-selling author. For nine years, he was online travel editor for Der Spiegel, one of Germany’s top news magazines, and he has contributed to National Geographic, the Courier-Mail, and Time Off magazine, among other publications. His next book, Couchsurfing in Russia, will be published in fall 2018. He lives in Hamburg, Germany.

EXCERPT Forty-four million Iranians, 60 percent of the total population, are under thirty. I have met only a few dozen of them. My travels are not a representative survey but encounters with a select group, a group who speaks English, is interested in travel and life in the West, and striving for more freedom. A group who has developed a remarkable routine of breaching laws despite the threat of draconian punishment. Never in the thirty-five years of the Islamic Republic have there been so many of them. Their social revolution takes place behind closed doors. And in the digital world. Flirting on Viber, putting their headscarves aside on Facebook, posting scandalous clips on YouTube. The Internet allows more freedom than reality does. It is still an escape from the public arena, but at some stage testing the boundaries online will appeal so much that they can no longer accept being contained offline. “The change in Iran must come peacefully and from within,” wrote the Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi. I have the impression that the young Iranians haven’t yet realized the power potential provided by sheer numbers and that they have a real chance to transform their country.

From the Danish concept of hygge (or “coziness”) to the Swedish fika (or “coffee break”), when it comes to enjoying the good things in life, the Nordic countries tend to know best. And dessert, Bakeland reveals, is no exception. Written by Marit Hovland, the Norwegian graphic designer, baker, and photographer behind the popular Instagram account and blog Borrow My Eyes, this gorgeous recipe book is a remarkably innovative homage to the beauty of the world around us that will delight lovers of baking, crafting, nature, and all things Scandinavian. With fifty tempting dessert recipes and 140 stunning color photographs, Bakeland is as much a treat for the eyes as it is for the taste buds. Hovland offers a sweet, playful approach to the New Nordic cuisine trend made popular by chefs like Magnus Nilsson. Her belief that “inspiration can be found everywhere” shines through in each of her culinary creations, which replicate the most striking aspects of the natural world. From chocolate sea shells to pinecone-shaped gingersnaps, Bakeland takes readers on an artful, tasty trip through nature in Norway, season by season. Better yet, each recipe is detailed, precise, and easy to follow, with no special equipment required. With step-by-step illustrated instructions and an emphasis on simplicity, Hovland’s approach to baking is as accessible as it is delectable. WELLMANIA Extreme Misadventures in the Search for Wellness Brigid Delaney “I laughed so hard, I choked on a doughnut reading this book. I’m so glad Brigid Delaney tried all of this crazy stuff so I never have to.”

– Jen Mann, New York Times bestselling author of People I Want to Punch in the Throat Bridget Jones meets Morgan Spurlock in Wellmania, an in-depth, laughout-loud exploration of the best and worst of the wellness industry.

Cold-pressed juices, “clean” eating, colonic vacations, mindfulness apps,

and Paleo: health-care trends and miracle diets seem to be more plentiful each year. But do any of these tactics actually work? What does “wellness” even mean? In Wellmania, longtime journalist Brigid Delaney tackles the good, the bad, and the just-a-little-ridiculous of the wellness industry, using herself as the guinea pig. Starting with a brutal 101-day fast, she leaves behind her thirtysomething-year-old lifestyle of late-night parties and all-day hangovers to test the things that are supposed to make us healthy and whole: yoga classes, meditation, CBT, Balinese healing, silent retreats, group psychotherapy, and more. Writing with self-deprecating wit and refreshing honesty, she sorts through the fads and expensive hype to find out what actually works, while asking, What does all this say about us? Is total wellness even possible? And why do you start to smell so bad when you haven’t eaten in seven days? According to comedian Judith Lucy, the result is “a bloody entertaining read that leaves you wondering whether you want to do yoga or get mindlessly drunk and despair at the state of the world.”

his best-selling book, The Obesity Code. Now he has set out to do the same for type 2 diabetes. Today, most doctors, dietitians, and even diabetes specialists consider type 2 diabetes to be a chronic and progressive disease—a life sentence with no possibility of parole. But the truth, as Dr. Fung reveals in this paradigm-shifting book, is that type 2 diabetes is reversible. Writing with clear, persuasive language, he explains why conventional treatments that rely on insulin or other blood-glucoselowering drugs can actually exacerbate the problem, leading to significant weight gain and even heart disease. The only way to treat type 2 diabetes effectively, he argues, is proper dieting and intermittent fasting—not medication.

how his dream of playing hockey was stolen from him by his mentor, the charismatic predator and now infamous coach Graham James. He recounts the mental torment he suffered both during and long after the abuse, including years of struggle to overcome substance abuse, eating disorders, self-harm, and selfsabotage. With vivid language and gripping honesty, he provides a deeper look into the terrible reality behind the sanitized term “sexual assault.” Graham James confessed to sexually assaulting Sheldon Kennedy and Theo Fleury and was convicted of both crimes. But he neither confessed to nor was convicted for his sexual assault of Gilhooly, depriving Gilhooly of the judicial closure he craved. In I Am Nobody, Gilhooly draws from his experience as both a victim and a lawyer to provide a valuable legal perspective missing from other abuse memoirs, delivering a powerful indictment of a legal system that, he argues, does not adequately deal with serial sexual child abuse or allocate enough resources to rehabilitation of either the abuser or the victim. But most important, Gilhooly offers hope, affirmation, and inspiration for those who have suffered abuse and for their loved ones.

Greg Gilhooly is a graduate of Princeton University and the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law, and has held senior positions in numerous corporations. He has shared his story with the Globe and Mail, the Toronto Star, CBC, and other media, and is in demand as a public speaker and a media commentator. He lives in Oakville, Ontario.
