Preface There are too many paths in our life that we could take. The selection of the one means most to us from those paths becomes a critical point of our life. So it is my decision to pursue a master degree in Landscape Design at your prestigious university. For four years, I have been fascinated by the wonderlands of Landscape Design, Architecture Design and Interior Design. But Landscape Design is the one speaks to me. Landscape Design is where my heart and soul lies. Together, we overcame a lot of diiculties: reinforce and innovation. With my love for Landscape Design, I was able to endure countless practices to cultivate industry expertise and logical thinking. Landscape Design is a masterpiece that integrates nature into human life. It urges me to consider about issues such as inhabitations, environment and eco-systems. The skyscrapers might produce strong visual impact, but an environment providing comfort and access to nature appeals to our emotional needs. For me, studying Landscape Design at graduate level will enable me to realize my dream of becoming a professional Landscape Designer that embrace originality and creativity. With this portfolio, let me share with you my passion and inspiration towards Landscape Design! Thank you, Shulan Kuang
Space & Form Road & Door
The first step for the project is finding an interesting composition form in a large planar graph. I keep optimizing the interactions of the lines and enlarge their sizes to determine the ideal form. Then, I transfer linear variations into tridimensional building structure, in which roads and doors complement each other to achieve over-arching theme.
1. Find an interesting composition form in a planar graph and then enlarge the form.
2. Transfer linear variations into tridimensional building structure and express the idea of Road & Door.

Space & Form
Plane & Space
“How to connect two separated spaces?” is the core issue of the project. The two spaces I designed are open to the outside while maintain certain sense of privacy. “T” shape walls are not applied in my design since they will form obstacles and break the consistency of the space. Between the two spaces, I design a semi-open road with one side facing columnar forms and the other fully-closed walls. Such element will add interest and give life to the space.

Intermountain House This project is located in the mountain of the East Lake Scenic Spot. The house faces East Lake in the North and mountains in the south. The challenge of the project is how to use the slope in design and solve the problems of humidity and illumination. Most of the year, the northeasterly winds blow here and bring moisture from the lake to the road. In addition, Wuhan is impacted by the subtropical monsoon climate. Considering such climate and environment, I attach great importance to ventilation and moisture-proof. In my design, the moveable walls are used to repel moisture and provide comfort. In addition, inspired by the lighting in the classical buildings of Huizhou, I use patios to allow in more natural lights.

As the residence is surrounded by lush green tress, I elevate its height to a certain degree to provide owners with a broad view to the outside and thereby enable the owners to admire the stunning lake view.

The gentle slope at front of the house provides people with easy accesses. The low arbors and shrubs on the slope will not block the views of owners. A single lane surrounding the house will save space and ensure convenient traic .

Moveable Patio Huizhou Patios, named as “Patio in the Sky”, are located in the center of the building to let in more sunlight and wind. Patios also serve as air conditioners for the locals to keep the interior of house stay warm in winter and cool in summer.
Considering the local climate (damp and rainy in the summer; cold and dry in the winter), I design a terrace with retractable curtain walls.
I use the principle of Huizhou Patio in my design. It will enable the mountain house to receive sufficient sunlight. In addition, the collected rainwater could be used for recycle and temperature adjustment.
Patio Quiet Space
Wet Season During wet seasons, the retractable curtain walls could be closed to prevent the moisture that brought in by the wind.

Campus Renovation In my design, the route frequently taken by students is to be paved into road easy to walk on and beautiful to look at. With the running water, rest chairs and convenient roads, this place shall achieve convenience and eloquence at the same time.

The MInoe Source of people
The area I have chosen is the open space behind the teaching buildings. While the open space is the most convenient road to teaching buildings, its roads has not been paved. It only has bare hills, unattended lawns and few trees.

How to figure out an Interesting Terrain in slope?
My inspiration come from a white cloth randomly placed on the desk. In my imagination, the folds are the ridges and valleys. As for my design, while the relatively high point of the slope becomes ridge (stage), the low point becomes valley (sidewalk).
GzvtcevkqpBVgzvwtg
I design the steep slope as the bleacher for students and teachers to watch movie at weekends or to organize social activities such as dancing and singing competitions. The place will greatly enrich our campus life.

It is in our nature to like to be closed to water. Therefore I design a water system running between the wooden footways. A manmade waterfall cascades down the slope. The waterfall will be a treat to eye and ear at the same time.

Small Public Building Art Center
Nowadays, many public spaces and buildings are surrounded by steels and concretes with green landscape diminishing and ashes floating in the air. How to enable people to interact with the nature is the focus of my design. In the meanwhile, since the public building is designed for art center, I apply the elements of arts in my design. Inspired by geometric formations in the works of Piet Cornelies Modrian, I mainly utilize squares and lines to design the art center.

Located by the side of Shahu Lake, the project faces a vast area of lake. In my design, based on the lighting of Wuhan City, the building will face the north to ensure suicient light throughout the year. Also, it looks out to the stunning lake.

The Wavy Commercial Strip It is a renovation plan for a high street. The original street is in the “L” shape, which fails to attract the attention of pedestrians. What could I do to add some personality into the street? An image of sea waves crashing into the straight coast come to my mind. A construct between “curve” and “straight line” will light up the atmosphere of the street. Therefore I add elements of “curve” into the street. In addition, for the convenience of pedestrians, I remove several extra steps. Without such steps, the road will be easier to go through for the young, elderly and disabled.
