WHAT DOES T
TETZ MEAN??
The word “TETZ” is the original word which derives from the Japanese word “tetsu / wadachi”. It originally means a track on the ground engraved by a vehicle or a person. In addition, there is the popular saying “Don’t step on the same tetsu.” This phrase is generally used to advise someone not to make the same mistakes. Given that, the original Japanese word “tetsu” seems not to sound positive. I don’t think so. No matter how lame my works are, I believe I could not get the thing I dream of without that sort of any lame stuff. Speaking about the mentality, that similars to American rappers calling their new song “a brand new sh*t”. The word itself is not decent enough, but there is surely the love and passion in their song. As the process of getting better and better, I have kept producing many TETZ. By doing that I believe they lead me somewhere I get excited. The word TETZ is filled with hope, love, humbleness, toughness, and my hip-hop.

Campus Rd
School of Architecture
UHM-West The project site is the one district in the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus. It is located in the westernmost part of the campus and surrounded by many buildings such as Sinclair Library, School of Architecture, Gartley Hall, Dean Hall, and Hemingway Hall. All these facilities are connected via Campus Rd which is jointed into University Avenue. As the center area of the west part of the campus, there are many students all day. While there are so many students accessing the site for various occasions, they must not embrace what is impressive at the site. Campus Rd runs through the site from East to West, so it echos the orbit of the sun. 5.

Positive Aspects at The Site For students coming to the campus from University Avenue side in the morning, they are welcomed by shiny sun lights, and once getting into the campus, Monkey Pod trees on both sides make it milder and give students a great sense of place(Pic. 2). Around 5 - 6 pm after classes and when students leave campus, beautiful sunsets sinking far west side on Campus Rd reward their hard works(Pic. 1). As shown in Pic. 3, since the site is the place for many students, there is a cafe & bar restaurant right next to Sinclair Library. Students can have lunch or dinner here. Especially, because Sinclair library regularly opens 24 hours or closes at 12 pm, the foodservice in Hemingway Hall is really important. So some 7.

students tend to come over to the site to buy some snacks from the opposite side of the campus which does not have any place selling food in the evening. Among all the facilities related to the site, the School of Architecture has great potential. Different from the other facilities, it opens 24 hours for the students and generates many physical outcomes. Albizia House is one of them(Pic. 4). As shown in this example, there must be some other types of exhibitions and works in the future.

Problems & Constraints It’s true that there are already so many great things at the site that it looks there is no need to add any changes. However, once pursuing better qualities both for students and the university as a whole, some renovations would be needed.
are there. However, as shown in Pic. 2 and 3, some of them are not well maintained and the elevational gap makes people difficult to move around. Finally Pic. 5 shows how sad the university entrance is. As the largest gate in the west, it looks unwelcoming.
Looking at Pic. 1 & 4, as you can see, Campus Rd is really dominant despite that here is not officially registered as a part of primary vehicular circulation on the campus. That means the road is covered by many cars for parking while not functioning as an important traffic path. Around Sinclair Library building, many kinds of trees and ground cover plants 8.

Parking Slots In order to change Campus Rd more pedestrian-centered, getting lid of most of parking slots. Thanks to this, it would be possible to create rooms to arrange the site for many other ways.
11.
The Sad Entrance As the largest western entrance in UH-Manoa campus, it needs to be more symbolic and the place giving visitors the sense of arrival. So, this spot pursues the entrance place symbolized by local history and cultural aspects.
Unutilized Areas The area around the library is not for visitors, nor ecology, so all the underutilized areas pursue to be productive for people and habitats for local birds. Judging from the soil characteristics and amounts of precipitation, it must be possible.
Disconnection Although Sinclair Library and Hemingway Hall are really close and characteristically great relationship with each other, the area between them are not well connected. So it needs to be seamless and better place to create students’ activities.
12.
PROJECT GOALS
Contribute to improve the qualities of students’ and visitors’ life on campus. HOW ~~~?????
待 Improving Ecological Quality There are already so many kinds of existing birds and the site has great soil characteristics. So by making the site more habitable for local fauna and flora and create opportunities for people to interact with them, UH-Manoa campus west entrance must be able to be the area for anything on campus in different ways. - You can see more detailed ecological site analysis in appendix pages.
〇 Expand Recreational Opportunity By changing from vehicle centered area to pedestrian friendly place, the project pursues to create rooms which students spontaneously want to generate activities to improve their quality of life on campus.

& DIRECTIONS
16.
PRINCIPLE 01. Rearranging the Axis Layout Currently, the existing axis from the entrance gate to the east side of the campus is winding and has a few elevational differences. That makes visitors not easy to feel the sense of legibility as the important campus circulation. So, as a principle one, by getting rid of bike parking and the parking slots along the axis, it aims to create the room to rearrange the layout. And then, make the axis straight. By doing so, it helps emphasize the existing campus identity symbolized by albizia street running east side to the center. Also, be able to expect the new activities managed by students to improve their quality of life on campus on the new axis.

PRINCIPLE 02. Make Ecologically Interactive! n the existing condition, there is no interaction between visitors and site specificities such as many trees and local fauna habitats. In addition, the conditions of ground cover plants and grasses on the surface are not well maintained, so the site as a whole looks not so healthy. Given that, it pursues the improvements of ecological interaction by emphasizing the existing potentials. In order to do that, the new built structures are needed. These are not just for visitors, but also the local existing birds by supporting their quality of habitats and lives there. New built structures help visitors stay more comfortable outside than existing conditions, new ecological activities would be managed by student organizations.

PRINCIPLE 03. Make Open & Connected!! The area between Sinclair Library and Hemingway Hall which has food services is physically disconnected. In case the first floor of the library is going to function as a study space, there is no need to change the site. But it’s going to renovate into the new cafeteria space. Given that, it would be better that new cafeteria and Hemingwa Hall is connected and the space in between functions as a students’ gathering spot. Therefore, the existing condition needs to be changed physically. In the process of changing the landform, the new elevational gaps appear. Different from existing ones, it pursues to utilize that new gaps as a sitting space for visitors.

From the underutilized vacant space, how it became more interactive with the existing site specificities: ecological variety and vacant space? Given that other areas are utilized mainly for visitors, this place should be focused on local ecology. Because there are many local birds and already great quality of soil, it pursues the place where they can live healthily and visitors can enjoy observing them. To provide great habitat, Sweet potato is a good choice. It planted most parts of the area. Sweet potato plays a very important role in covering the ground, so it provides places to live for small bugs, which is a great feed for local birds and an important structure to compose ecological structure at the site. In addition to ecological performances, Sweet potato is also aesthetically great. The leave’s color is green or purple and the iconic leave’s shape gives the landscape a nice sense of texture. It worth observing from the new wood deck. It would be fun to have a small group event for relaxation. By designing the place for restraining people’s behaviors to observing or just being there, The Meditation Garden pursues a great overwrapping place between people and local ecology.

As explained in the previous chapter, this area pursues to be connected by removing elevational gaps. On the other hand, it is the key that how the new elevational changes which arose in the process of the landform changes are accommodated to make the plaza into one united plaza. To solve this problem, the existing site is changed into the sunken garden plaza. The new elevational gaps are utilized as a sitting space for gathering or a part of the circulation. Since each step is half a feet height, it is comfortable to go up and create a smooth and seamless sunken plaza which allows visitors at the pathway easiler to observe what is happening in the sunken plaza from a little bit higher place. Given the 1st floor of Sinclair Library is going to renovate into a large cafeteria, the plaza must be filled with a lively atmosphere. So this plaza will be the center of students’ activities on the west part of the campus. 36.

Right next to the new axis, there is the space which is part of Meditation Garden and still underutilized. Given that the new axis is already separated with ground cover plant belts, how should the space between the axis and the new entrance of Sinclair Library be like? This spot is like the cross-section of many local species and visitors. Therefore I come up with the idea of the outdoor living space both for local species and students. Then this sort of wood deck structure is invented. This ceiled structure which has both senses of indoor and outdoor provides a great opportunity for them to stay outside comfortable. 42.

As the starting point of the East-West Axis on UH-Manoa Campus, this place needs to give a sense of arrival to visitors and show the legibility. So, including the rearrangement of the axis, many improvements are implemented. First, the new entrance monuments are created. Thinking about the other UH-Manoa entrance places, there are no impressive gate structures. So the new entrance monuments which the campus history graphics are engraved, welcome students and visitors. And between them, visitors can feel a sense of legibility with the new re-arranged East-West Axis. This primary pedestrian pathway is basically for pedestrians except for food trucks around the lunch and dinner times and some emergent situations, so the landscape impression will be totally different from the existing condition. The entrance space and the axis opened for people will generate new activities to improve students’ quality of life on campus. 48.

- PROFILE -
SHUN ISHIMINE Currently a graduate student at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, the School of Architecture. Born and raised up in Okinawa, Japan, which is the southernmost tropical and beautiful island. The experiences that he had been involved in community empowerment activities for urban designs, drove him to get into the world of landscape architecture. How we could support local communities? How can we contribute to reorientation of society for better ways? In order to find hints for those questions, he actively exposes himself to many different design philosophies. What you have seen so far on TETZ, is a one part of them. Most of his designs have been very inspired by the super professors at UH-Manoa and many American landscape Architects. But most importantly, the design mentality itself derives from Japanese Hip-Hop Culture. Don’t miss the still rapidly growing his great amateurism.
