Introduction

Site mapping

Historically, streets have many functions, mainly related to traffic communication and social interaction. However, in the 20th century, street design began to center on the largest spaces for traffic and cars, while public life was marginalized into narrow sidewalks With the development of the Internet of Things and the popularization of autonomous driving, there will be a shift from car-led urban streets to pedestrian-led urban streets in the future. However, the existing car-based road system design is not conducive to the driving of autonomous vehicles. Therefore, our project hopes to discuss the mutual influence of landscape design and transportation technology and provide a solution strategy to rethink the integration of the existing highway system into the public transportation system, form an efficient transportation system, and combine transportation infrastructure and public domain design with the application of shared autonomous vehicles.

Problems of exsiting traffic system

SITE

site analysis The traffic congestion in Los Angeles is one of the worst in the world. It is the city that spends the most time in traffic jams during peak hours of any city in the world. This is related to his car-oriented development strategy. The site is located on Interstate 405 in the west of Los Angeles, which is a two-way ten-lane road. The site lacks a northsouth public transportation system. At the same time, due to the barrier of mountains, this highway has become a necessary section for north-south commuting. Meanwhile,it is connected to various employment sub-centers in Los Angeles from east to west, so it is in a relatively important traffic position.

Highway construction accelerates the suburbanization

What will the street be like in the era of auromated vehicles(AV)?

The railway system promotes suburbanization

Broaden the road and enter the automobile age

Master plan

There are two phases in our design.Phase 1 is the transition phase, when traditional cars coexsit with AV.And phase 2 is the complete phase when there are only AV on the street. This master plan shows the street design in phase 1.

A multi-purpose AV system with no need to transfer

08:00 Running

AV will be used as a multi-purpose unit in a means of public transportation. The occupancy of one AV unit is up to 4 people and this unit can group together. The unit can find other units that have same direction as passengers put information of their destination into the system by smartphones. This is a new type of public transportation with the Internet of Things Technology

03 Transient Landscape A strategy to make the idle space in cities useful

Individual Project 2020.11~2020.12

In order to find the most suitable strategy for these sites,I studied the process of constructing a building. Then I learned the concept of transient landscape which gave me inspiration. These sites all have their fixed idle period, from several months to a couple of years.During this time, they can be used to make profits for the city. From the research I studied,I put my focus on soil cultivation.

This design aims to turn the shallow pit into a public place where people can see how soil is cultivated.People can participate in the process of sowing, irrigating and harvesting. The feeling of space changes while digging.

The design for a deep pit is mostly finished by machines, with less participation of people. Because as it gets deeper, it is not convenient for human to cultivate. So I decide to let the excavator to culticate the soil. In addition, most greening plants can't live in a deep pit, so moss is chosen as a soil cultivation object.
