URBAN ESTUARY
RESEARCH ON MANGROVE DEFORESTATION Aquaculture has been the primary reason for mangrove deforestation since the 1970’s with the rise of shrimp farming. The ideal shrimp farm habitat are identical to mangrove estuaries in terms of temperature, brackish salinity, soil, and tidal forces to move water. However, many of the estuaries such as the Cojimies shown to the right have lost over 95% of their virgin mangrove area.(shown in the mapping on the right) As the mangroves disappear, the waste water from the shrimp ponds are released into the estuary killing the remaining ecosystem and that water is pumped back into the ponds poisoning the shrimp as water quality decreases.

REBUILD BY MANGROVE
In the master plan, we propose to use nature framework to redefine the informal urban structure as well as to rehabilitate the environment system. It not only help the coastal village recover from the earthquake, but also build up a more resilient and sustainable community.

HYBRID MANGROVE PARK For the last century in Latin America, mangrove forests have been treated as a wasteland waiting to be developed. In order to ensure the survival of restored mangroves, the cultural view of mangroves must be changed and show to have social and economic benefits. The urban mangrove park provides an educational public space to redefine what beauty is and educate the population about red, white and black mangroves and how they integrate with the urban system. The shrimp pond is converted to be a hybridize natural and semi-intensive system based on research from the silvofishery system.

CONVERSATION WITH THE HISTORY - SPANISH CRAFT CENTER DESIGN The design for the Spanish handcraft center is not just the building itself. The site layout emphasized its relation to the existing castle. The plaza in-between is designed to bridge the conversation between the new building and the existing castle. The landscape and architecture are integrated to create a new picture for local landscape.

The site design is coordinated with architecture and civil to create satisfying living environment and to meet the local committee design requirement.
