Personal Statement

05 | Shu Xiao | Architecture Portfolio |

Art has always been my true passion, and every forms of art has captivated me since I was a small child. Upon my deep passion for art, my appreciation of architecture, and my yearning to be amongst those who create the changing skylines that form our cities. I decided to further my studies in your prestigious university.

I am always curious about the contradiction and unification of the duality of architecture, such as void/solid, in/out, dynamic/static, heavy/light and etc. I try to explore how such duality can dynamically evolve and be applied across different scales in different resolutions of architecture. Such idea is explored through theoretical research and practice, which are two integrated design development processes that deal with the significance of architecture.

Along with the small-scaled urban architecture, I have also kept a deep interest in the history of previous architectural art forms and buildings. For example, I participated in the Chinese University Student Computer Design Competition in 2017, which is based on traditional Chinese historical architecture. It is a pity that the so many existing sites cannot be restored; hence I came up the idea that restoring the ancient architecture in an animated form. Based on this idea, I tried to apply it in the repair of Zhanghuatai, the name of palace in Qin Dynasty. In order to have a deeper understanding about the site, I visited numerous residents near the site and the surrounding ancient buildings to study the form of ancient buildings and the factors affect the preservation of ancient architectures. Combined with the relevant literature, I made use of the design to intervene and improve the existing situation, and expressed the magnificent history of Zhanghuatai, where the king of Chu lived in the form of Lumion animation. Fortunately, the effect is outperformed, and it’s been displayed on the we-media of the university computer course teaching steering committee of the Ministry of Education and the organizing committee of the Chinese college students computer design competition.

Five years' academic study in the School of Architecture transformed my instinctive excitement and imagination about architecture into systematic knowledge and comprehensive understanding. The study of fundamental architectural courses like architecture structure, makes me realize that architecture design not only gives importance on aesthetics, but also on the more essential functionality and practicality. I yearn to learn more western architectural history, in combination with eastern architectural knowledge I learned at university, to form my own architectural conceptions. I hope to form a sort of architectural design conception with characteristics of China's traditional culture after absorbing modern architectural theories and technologies.

I really hope that my portfolio can show my passion and potential towards architecture since my application for your university stems from my desire to further my studies at your prestigious university. Your prestigious university is recognized as one of the world's leading schools of architecture and graduates from your Master's programs are highly sought after. I hope to work with a team of architects, researchers and built environment professionals to inform my creative design practices. I believe this program will empower me with the contextual knowledge of the history and theory of landscape architecture, alongside the ability to apply research to design and professional scenarios, be they speculative, theoretical or practical. I hope to form a sort of architectural design conception with characteristics of human friendly to help solve some social problems and make a little contribution to human progress. I expect to develop myself into a welltrained specialist in this field who can make important contributions to architecture. Considering my life experiences abroad and my determination to be the best at what I do. Please allow me to move forward and take my education and career to this next exciting stage.

Exhibition Space

The exhibition space consists of two parts, the spiral staircase and the exhibition space enclosed by the spiral staircase. The spiral staircase is dotted with layout books, which can greatly enrich the view of the crowd. The exhibition space enclosed in the middle USES the spiral staircase's own characteristics to generate space division, and has certain symbolic significance.

Reading Space

According to the cutting of the building grid, the reading area is created.According to the height characteristics of different users, the height of the bookshelf becomes more rich, making the flow of people in the reading area more interesting.

Patio Space

Using the geographical characteristics of the site to analyze the Angle between the sun and the site, a certain Angle is set when the skylight is set, so that there are more direct light inside the building. At the same time, the use of this feature can make the building inside at a specific time and a specific place into a certain amount of light, creating a sense of sacredness.
