01. REVERSE CITY Spring Semester, UMICH Intructor: McLain Clutter | Team Work with Yiwei Huang, Shreejit Modark Sept. 2014 - Dec. 2014 Location: Benito Juarez Airport, Mexico City D.F., Mexico Inspired by the walled city in Medieval times, our proposal turns this historic precedent to the contemporary enclave inside out, forming abrupt walls for the adjacent enclaves and allowing the center of our enclave to complete a network of green space spanning the city from the north to the south. The result is a network of public space at a scale never before available in Mexico City.

ENCLAVE OF INCLUSION

Portfolio of SHUYA XU • 1

+

BACKGROUND Redevelopment of the Benito Juarez Airport gives the city of Mexico an opportunity to cultivate a huge mass of land into a new center of advancement. Thinking on a city level, this chuck of undeveloped mass now gives an opening to create a hub for commercial development and its supportive communes. We see the opportunity to establish different nodes within this enclave and connect them through transit stations. The commercial activities will mainly happen along the east – west connector (road) which links the two major highways in Mexico City, and later on will become the main chuck of the commercial center that we initiate. LANDSCAPE CONNECTION The two “walls” adjoining the other enclaves’ act like edges. The aggregation of building types selected makes them porous and solid at the same time. These two separators emerge from the landscape and at moments become the part of greens. This enclave creates an opportunity in bringing and linking the two main large eco-parks next to the site, and this creates a larger system of connected landscapes making the city follow the sustainable culture which then ends at Lake Texcoco.

The design of the Reverse City is composed of two major vehicular connectors with the ring road which goes all around other enclaves. It gets divided into tiers according to the density designated to every function. This helps in making the internal circulation of the Reverse City completely pedestrian. The landscape designed becomes the part of the architecture and sometimes emphasizes the language of architecture types used into the design. Taking the sustainable move from linking of greens, the retention ponds and the mounts designed help in water purification and directing the flow towards Lake Texcoco. Portfolio of SHUYA XU • 5

PUBLIC, CONNECTED AND INCLUSIVE Through the redevelopment of the publicly owned market site, the design proposes a model of public-private investment to finance a suite of public facilities, commercial uses and mix-income housing. The intervention gives visibility to the public programs serving the surrounding areas including a modernized public market, a community center and library, leveraging profit through additional programs, and leaving the public grounds open and adaptable to serve the many manifestations of public life in the metropolis. By investing in social infrastructure, this catalytic project explores a sustainable model that ambitions to bring back the livability of public space by reinventing the model of public market.

XOCHIMILCO, ANOTHER REALM OF MEXICO CITY DF

The zone of Xochimilco, 28 km to the south, is the only remaining reminder of the lacustrine landscape of the Aztec capital, where the conquistadores destroyed the monuments and drained the canals. On the edge of the residual lake of Xochimilco (the southern arm of the great driedup lake of Texcoco where the Aztecs had settled on a group of islets linked to solid ground by footbridges), and in the midst of a network of small canals, are still some chinampas, the floating gardens that the Spanish so admired. This half-natural, half-artificial landscape is now an 'ecological reserve'. By rebuilding the hydrology system, this design builds on the identity of the place bringing back historical canals and artificial islands, to achieve the balance between tourism development and ecological conservation.Thiis concept further integrates environmental and economic design to achieve a balance in development and conservation. There are four different strategies include hydrologic reversion, path generation, edge fixing and pocket catalysis.

1

INSPIRATION

The concept is inspired by an old Chinese mythology named Peach Colony. A Long time ago, a fisherman found a harmonious village hidden in a cave accidentally after he miss his road wondering in an amazing peach blossom. This story ended with the village disappearing again when the fisherman leads a group of people to find the harmonious basin. 22 • Portfolio of SHUYA XU

2

SITE

The story reminds me of the way people drift down from the Aztec city to Xochimilco village since 200 years until as late as 40 years ago and also the loss of Xochimilco in urbanism, economic and cultural aspect happening now. (The sprawled out, Mexico City D.F, used to be Lacustrine Cities with 5 lakes. Xochimilco was one city located in the southern lake from the Aztec period. And now, is the only one delegacias with a lake and the biggest area of surface water in this mega-city.

PROJECTS

To bring back the cultural memory, the project will re-establish wo historic harbors in the east. The construction of the harbors will promote tourism development creating synergy with the new metro line. From four different strategies, hydrology reversion, path generation, edge fixing and pocket catalysis, this concept integrates environmental and economic design to achieve a balance in development and conservation. Beyond how to bring back its network of canals and artificial islands, this design tries to increase the meaning and benefit could come along with them and achieve the balance between tourism development and ecological reservation

Durban, a coastal city in eastern South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province, is known for its African, Indian and colonial influences. The Port of Durban, commonly called Durban Harbour, is the largest and busiest shipping terminal on the African Continent. It is also one of the few ports in the world located in close proximity to the central business district. Durban is not born from a center, but consists of a series of micro-cities that have been connected. Based on the new masterplan of Durban Harbor, our project will propose a new idea of areas connect these islands and that have functional diversity and flexible feature for different users.

Water-lilies Installation Many rural inhabitants have no access to power or running water, meaning that any lowcost water purifier must be able to operate in the most basic environment. As a low cost alternative to sewage purification, the system mimic the natural method of water purifying: The first step allow the space hold very limited amount of water as the process of Plant-microbe Interaction; The second step happened with a complex multi type structure mimic the Plant Physiological Control process, then the water from different path comboine into one again for the last “Soil Chemical and Biological Processes”, which might cooperate with microbiological water purifiers. Again, the form inspiring by the master series painting “WATERLILIES” by Claude Monet, this system, which simulates natural aquatic plants strengthen the purification function of water.

Cleveland is home to four of the parks in the countywide Cleveland Metroparks system, as well as the: Washington Park, Brookside Park and parts of the Rocky River and Washington Reservations. Known locally as the “Emerald Necklace”, the Olmsted- inspired Metroparks encircle Cuyahoga county. Included in the system is the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Located in Big Creek valley, the zoo contains one of the largest collection of primates in North America. In addition to the Metroparks system, the Cleveland Lakefront State Park district provides public access to Lake Erie. This cooperative between the City of Cleveland and the State of Ohio contains six parks: Edgewater Park, located on the city’s near west side between the Shoreway and the lake; East 55th Street Marina, Euclid Beach Park and Gordon Park. The Cleveland Public Parks District is the municipal body that oversees the city’s neighborhood parks, the largest of which is the historic Rockefeller Park, notable for its late-19th century historical landmark bridges and Cultural Gardens.

To improve the legibility of stream, bring people back to engage water, raise the visibility of water and identity of the brook, and encourage exploration of local residents and university students. More specifically, our goals are: 1. To improve the legibility of stream and increase visibility: we will daylight part of the stream in Ambler park to celebrate water around University circle. Our intervention will also require to manage the existing vegetation to create more physically and visually permeable boundaries. 2. TRAN[S] ULI HINES STUDENT COMPETITION 2015

The design strengthens principal connections to major areas of downtown New Orleans while maintaining its character. A significant advantage is the location in historic Treme and direct proximity to new developments that will put the neighborhood on a trajectory toward renewed economic prosperity and growth. With many cultural resources in and around the development, the site offers a unique opportunity to attract visitors and residents in the extension of the downtown districts, through the development, and the city beyond. At the regional level, the development connects the greenway system from New Orleans City Park to Louis Armstrong Park in both the human and ecological dimensions. Stormwater management extends from Lake Pontchartrain and the Lafitte Greenway through the development in green infrastructural systems along St. Louis Street and under the I-10 Corridor Park. The development schedule is heavily front-loaded to achieve positive cash flow as soon as possible. Through a $20 million equity investment and a $100 million debt, majority of which will be used in the first 3 years, the project hopes to construct a variety of building types and uses to attract a diverse set of people to the area. The development will acquire 1.6M SF of land roughly worth $15M. Several parcels in the plan are owned by the government, requiring a creative approach to land acquisition. The project envisions exchanging lot J for a long-term ground lease on the Greenway Belt lots.

EXISTING CONSTRUCTURE

S M L XL flexible scale (AA Beijing ) The construction of the two symbolic venue sites of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games cost lots and managed to attract a great number of visitors. However, there has been a sharp decline in their numbers of visitors after the games. To ameliorate this situation, new attractions to visitors is needed to be create. The causes of such a decrease in the number of visitors include bad utilization of space, unsatisfactory connections between important nodes and lack of attractive events, which is, in term, due to the incapability of the two structures to held events other than sports games.
