For the first time in furniture history, a sheet steel chair frame has been crafted with cuttingedge technologies from auto engineering. An organic shape has been fashioned that fuses with the seat shell to become a distinctive whole. KORT is a multi-purpose chair that has won many awards. Chair

Breaking the Boundry Designer’s idea was the sparkling beginning of the story. The aimed objective was to create a new masterpiece: like a stylish leather bicycle saddle, or the gear of skateboard. The chair was to merge stability and technical precision with a contoured shape. Something for people to sit on that never losesits fascination. A chair that lightweight, easy to get hold of and comfortable, ergonomic. These visions led unprecedented manufacturing technology taken from auto engineer.

With persuasiveness and tenacity the idea gradually began to take shape. The first prototype were welded together from 11 handmade components. The form was complex and the radii were small. One of the toughest challenges was also to achieve maximum strength with a minimum of steel. Luckily, we met chassis this time.     A chassis consists of an internal frame work that supports a man-made object in its construction and use. It is analogous to an animal’s skeleton.     When KORT came onto the market 2011 it was the first chair to be produced from deepdrawn sheet steel, like the bodywork of a car.

Our job is not to fulfill the market.

Its form results from a special industrial process involving considerable investments for the development and construction of press dies to make the steel light and stable as well.

In the production process, an industrial press forms and stretches the pre-cut fine-steel metal at 300 tonnes of pressure to make the seat and backrest frame.         Further, factors including the geometry, pressure in the press, speed and damping are attuned so that no tears occur to the pre-stamped components during the deepdrawing process. Four laser-cut piece of metal are incorporated to provide the parts for connecting points. Stability is created by the formed structure and not the amount of material used—avenge raw materials and its weight.

Production Process

Serial Manufacture

Cropping the disposed croppings of metal are used to produce the four connecting points, so that virtually no wastage is created.

Compressing industrial press forms and stretches the pre-cut fine steel metal at 300 tons of pressure to make the body frame.

Galvanization a galvanization process is usually adding a thin layer of zinc onto the sheet steel to protect it from corrosion.

Drying the frame is drying in the air and waiting for post-production throughout leather padding by masterfully handcraft.

A robot then welds the frame, connecting points and legs together before powder coating them. The exchangeable seat and backrest shell, made of finely grained polypropylene, is industrial design at its best. It is form-fitted to the frame using a patented, concealed connecting method.

Working as the producer, KORT had the oppor tunity to make a chair by industrial means for the first time.
