Reflective Introduction First year of M.Arch at the BAC taught me design approaches, drawing and modeling techniques, and it provided me with practical perspectives. As a non-design background student with little prior experience except for a few months’ self-taught software experience and a few theoretical readings, I have been immersed in the systematical program at the BAC since the beginning of this year. Architecture for me ceased being a mystical palace, but something consistently emerged with daily study and work, and changes my mind in every detailed way. The demanding work of Studio for instance, kept me thinking and observing on a daily basis, using a variety of methods and visualization skills to meet the challenge of alternating presentation and review process. A few points I was inspired during the last two semesters - The most effective way to protect an idea is to realize it (which here means to present it in an at least legible and aesthetic manner). - Show the work that matters following hierarchies. No one understands your design as you do, so mention the angles which you need to highlight and bring conversations. I started my internship program in summer and have had half-year practical experience so far. It was exciting to be involved in both research and design projects, knowing how the design proposals were incubated. The design process in a firm could be hugely different from school assignment, given the limited time and needs of clients. Fortunately, I felt so supported and had more far valuable memories than I expected in practice, and leveraging both academic and practice have been challenging and exciting. Our studio instructor said in the last class: It will never end. If ‘breathing it into reality’ was my goal in the past year, in 2018 I would keep cherishing the opportunity I could study here and create more work bringing meaningful conversation in class.

DIA BOSTON GALLERY

LOCATION Edgerly Rd Playground, Boston, MA

SPECIFICATION Nestled in a residential block of Boston’s Fenway neighborhood. For me, the playground acts as a calling card to celebrate the public space connected with the adjacent plaza pf Berklee College of Music. Individual Work 2017 Spring

3 Art Pieces Project description: A new Boston satellite gallery for the DIA Art Foundation will house three works of art which we may choose. I choose the 3 art pieces below since it represents 3 spatial potentials. Hanging fire flows through vertical spaces; Map of Broken Glass represents the horizontal link; The Artist Is Present project needs less exposed environment. First iteration Statement: A clear circulation was created in order to let people stroll through. Interlocking space provides a variety of viewing points.

A variety of experiences were achieved by the interaction with the outside environment including the streets, plaza and neighbors, and interior vertical connection among those three art pieces. Most private space for the Artist Is Present

Second iteration Vertical space study - Narrow cpmpressed spaces force people taking short-cuts or going up, while wide open space provide venue for arts and potential meditation space for artists and guests.

Third iteration Subtle combination of horizontal and vertical space creates movement and viewing points for both visitors and pedestrians. Visitors are also involved in the scences as objects being viewed.

Final iteration The three art pieces are put in different spots in the project according to their degree of exposure, requirement for light and size in nature. Those three art works arevisually connected by the the spaces created for both movement and viewing. By manipulating narrow and wide spaces, the place controls user’s movement. Shortcuts are narrow and relatively dark. Pause moments are wide and bright such as the platform on the second floor, taking consideration of the site-making conversation with the cross-street Berkelee Plaza. 2nd floor Plaza

Additionally, some spaces in the back are left blank, acting as threshold for the third art piece, which also reflects designer’s understanding of the site.

Grid + Geometry = Order The order could be found clearly in the system, not limited by the grid system it originally developed from.

Language such as the L shape and U shape provide various experiences for visitors and view points in the system. Similar gestures make the vertical connections of floors and art works more legible.

SHARED FUTURE GATEWAY PROJECT LOCATION Fenway, Boston, MA

SPECIFICATION Creating affordable, multi-generational housing in the Fenway neighbourhood. Proposal 1 Knots Plus Courtyard Completed with Salma Nour 2017 Spring

Second phase research and design proposal - Developing conceptual models for an affordable, intergenerational housing model that connects low-income seniors with students in a beneficial manner to the “sharing economy.”

Designers build 3 types of courtyard by building the knot - most exposed, semi-exposed and most private courtyard. Residents in the community could share the common space in various environmental conditions.

In our proposal, precedents The Riad in Morocco was combined with the knot form. The knotting + courtyards concept creates a form that it blurs the boundaries between inside and outside spaces.

LONG WHARF FERRY TERMINAL LOCATION Long Wharf, Boston, MA

SPECIFICATION A ferry terminal located in Long Wharf, a historic pier in Boston which extends half-mile into Bos-ton Harbor, provides cafe, indoor and outdoor waiting spaces in the water front, creates a new terminal for passengers commuting from financial district, city hall center, North End and other parts in city of Boston to East Boston. Precedent Study Zaha Hadid_Landscape Formation One The project conveys the idea of blending into nature through the language of curvilinear channels. By placing the channels parallel to one anther and put one negative secondary channel, it forms the interwoven space which enhances the sense of movement. Simultaneously it creates customized views through varied heights, rendering moments with interaction with surrounding landscape.

Images of the Area North End Park North End Park appears as the edge between the Public Market and the North End area.

North End Hay Market Opens every Friday and Saturday, the open-air market brings life into the community and attracts countless tourists.

Christopher Columbus Park Path The linear pavilion provides a splendid view and extends Atlantic Avenue to the Green Way Park.

Quincy Market Most populated indoor market located close to the historical attractions in New England, the two-floor building celebrates food culture, in a scale larger than other icons.

Site Analysis

Connecting two most visited circles in the area, Christopher Columbus Park, and the end of Long Wharf.

The connection directly forms the primary path of the building, enhancing the original harbor walk. Waterfront linear path would be potential platform moments in the building, giving people visual connection with the edge of the water as well as the skyline of the city.

The secondary space comes from the back of the Marriot Hotel, a path giving limited view unfolding spatial experience. The ‘cut’ through the building visually gives the architectural gesture, providing shortcuts for people coming from the MBTA station from the back.

Movement in Zaha’s LF One was transformed into this model, in which spatical relationship was achieved by various dimensions of the tube.

Internal circulation was the main focus in this model. Vertical spatial experience and visual connection moments were explored throung small, medium and large spaces.

This diagram generates from the square footage of each program in the ferry terminal complex and the estimated frequency of utility of each program in a 24-hours circle. For instance, 5000SF cafe space is highly used during lunch and dinner time.

SPECIFICATION A contemporary staircase form dissolving to surrounding landscape environment, potentially could be applied to different scale including architecture, urban and installation. Getting familiar with algorithm design, using data input contributing to output result.

Step 1 Project the contour on the curved surface rebuilt in Rhino

Step 2 Extrude the contour loft to make the object solid

Step 3 Project the curved surface and divide it to match the steps, applying random cull to choose the steps with pattern

Step 4 Divide the chosen steps and make grid patterns, project the patterns onto the upper surface
