The Sahawe Indian Dancers will perform at 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. in the parking lot located across from the Cactus Hotel – 17 East Twohig.
This event takes place during the Art-Ober-Fest celebration in downtown San Angelo on Saturday, October 12, 2013 following the Angelo State University Homecoming Parade. The Sahawe Indian Dancers were formed under the leadership of the Boy Scouts of America Troop 81 in 1950, later renamed the Boy Scout Troop and Venture Crew 181 – Concho Valley Council.
10
The Sahawes have performed thoughout Texas and learned their dances from visiting Indian events as the Gallup Intertribal Ceremonials in Gallup, New Mexico and the American Indian Exposition in Anadarko, Oklahoma. The elaborate costumes used by the dancers, made by the boys and leaders, are fashioned after ones seen on their trips to Indian gatherings and museums. During the years that a young man is a Sahawe he will learn through his training dedication, responsibility, leadership, fellowship, and reliability which will help him to become a good citizen. The Sahawes now perform 60 to 70 shows during the year at fairs, festivals, sporting events, conventions, and special events throughout Texas, surrounding states, and into Mexico. To date, the Sahawes have performed in over 200 cities in Texas. Each summer, the members are rewarded for their hard work with a trip to various parts of the country. They have traveled to 27 states in 50 years and have visited places like Yellowstone, Disney World, Grand Canyon, St Louis, Denver, and Santa Fe. During the past 50 years several hundred boys have gone through the Sahawe program, performing over 2000 shows. They have been designated as Uvalde’s “Ambassadors of Good Will” and were selected as Uvalde’s #1 tourist attraction by the Texas Travel Writers. The Sahawe organization is made up of boys ranging from 5th grade through high school and beyond. Many former members still perform with the group when their schedule permits. Along with their Sahawe activities, the boys are also active in their schools, churches, and other activities. Many excel in athletics, band, scholastics, and 4-H, winning local, area, and state awards.

November 9th - Karrin Allyson (NYC - Multiple Grammy Nominee) “She’s been described as a “musician’s musician,” and for once the overused term actually makes sense — one of the jazz world’s finest.” — Don Heckman, The Los Angeles Times. Legendary jazz critic Gary Giddins in The Village Voice says, “Allyson coolly stakes her claim. She brings a timbre that is part ice and part grain — incisive, original, and emotionally convincing.” The Houston Press agrees: “If there’s a choir in heaven, someday the exquisite vocalist Karrin Allyson will lead it. She’s such an otherworldly talent that the creator probably already has her on heavy rotation.

Ready, Set, Run! Several years ago, the
need for a breast cancer fundraiser in which all of the proceeds raised would stay local and assist women in the Concho Valley was prevalent. In 2008, the Shannon Pink Ribbon Run was born and is now the largest annual race in San Angelo.
“Proceeds from Shannon Women’s Imaging Center and its corresponding programs,” Michelle Snuggs, M.D., Shannon Women’s Imaging Center chief radiologist said. “Regular mammograms can detect cancer in its early stages and give women a head start on treatment. The Shannon
Women’s Imaging and MRI Center performs more than 10,000 mammograms a year. Our capability to provide digital mammograms allows us to view mammogram images more clearly, further helping to diagnose and begin treatment in the early stages.” between a one-mile walk/fun run, 5k or
a t-shirt and breast cancer survivors are acknowledged with a pink survivor shirt. “We appreciate all the support we have received from our community and are excited to honor breast cancer survivors and grow,” Dr. Snuggs said.
