Stone Oak Girl Scout Writes a Children’s Book for Her Gold Award Submitted by: Risa Weinberger, GS Volunteer

of the disease and treatment for other kids who have family members with cancer.

Olivia Martin, a high school Girl Scout in Troop 1097, wrote a child-friendly book on what to expect when a parent has cancer called, “C is for Cancer.” With this very important and impressive Girl Scout Gold Award project, Olivia is going to impact a lot of young lives in our community and beyond.

“As I read through it, I was amazed. I thought it was not what I expected. I thought (that) the points she was making are exactly what I think children have to ask themselves and they do ask themselves,” said Dr. Steve Weitman, a pediatric oncologist at the Cancer Therapy and Research Center. Weitman helped edit the book. He said it’s different from others because the author really knows what it’s like to have a parent with cancer.

In October, Olivia was interviewed on KSAT 12 about her Gold Award project. During the interview, Olivia explained how she came up with the idea to write a children’s book to help children understand what is happening to their parent or that special person in their life who has cancer. Olivia explained during the interview, “In 2005, my mom was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. I was very scared and, of course, I was nervous my mother was going to die. I also wanted to know what cancer was.”

In this book, kids can find assurance that cancer is not contagious and that it’s not their fault. There are also ideas on how to be a great support to their loved ones during treatment. “I put in there (that kids) can help around the house, doing some chores, (or other) little things just to help around the house,” Martin said.

Only 7-years-old at the time, Martin remembers having a lot of questions about the “C” word, and also feeling the stress of the unknown. “Even if you don’t exactly know what’s going on, you can feel the stress around you by the body language of the people around you,” Martin said.

Her hope is that parents will read the book alongside their kids as a conversation-starter, so kids will feel comfortable asking more questions throughout the process. Martin’s book will only be published online so that there will not be a cost incurred.

Her mom is a survivor and Olivia Martin is now a 15-year-old Girl Scout who chose to write her book, “C is for Cancer” for her Girl Scout Gold Award project. Her goal was to take the mystery out

She wants her book to be a free resource for the community. Her (Continued on page 3)

book is published online as a free resource for anyone interested. Currently, it is posted on the CTRC website http://www.ctrc.net/ ctrc1p.cfm .

In recent weeks you may have noticed landscaping activity on Huebner Road between Blanco Road and Stone Oak Parkway. As the trees have grown on these islands, more shade has been created underneath; therefore, we have incorporated river rock and mulch into the design, as well as shade and drought tolerant plants. In addition, this project involved removing sprinkler rotor heads and replacing them with drip lines. All these items contribute to water conservation, yet help us maintain a look unique to the Stone Oak area.

According to her troop leader, Mary Ann Salinas, “Troop 1097 is very proud of Olivia for finishing her Gold Award and making a very “sustainable” impact on our community. You Go Girl!!!” Olivia would like to thank Vicky Smith, Becky Jennings, Courtney Cunningham and the Gold Award Advisory Committee for approving this project for her Gold Award. Olivia will receive her actual Gold Award at the Celebrations award ceremony hosted by Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas in the spring.

In the Spring, compost will be added to these islands, as well as throughout Stone Oak. Compost will further retain the water, thus helping us water less often. We also hope to convert more rotor heads to drip line, thus saving water and money.

Please take some time to do some research of your own regarding drip line irrigation and drought tolerant plants. Our combined efforts have saved us one-third to one-half on our water bills in comparison to last year. When coupled with mulch, compost, and other water retention efforts, we expect 2014 to be a low cost, yet green, spring.

Safety First Tips To Protect Your Home

Sources: http://www.sanantonio.gov/sapd/CrimePreventionTips.aspx

Don’t Advertise That You’re Away •

Make sure your answering machine message says that you cannot reach the phone, and not that you are away from home.

Have your mail delivered to a temporary P.O. Box if you’re going to be gone for a long period.

Before traveling, stop newspaper/delivery services.

If possible, keep your lights on. Give the appearance that someone is home.

Maintain your lawn and alley; it reduces the amount of cover a potential burglar may use.

Secure Your Home and Belongings •

Invest in reliable locks and security systems.

Keep a record of your valuables and keep them hidden and secure.

Install a 190-degree door viewer or door scope on your front door. Always look before you open the door.

Make sure all windows are covered and that all windows and doors are locked before leaving the house.

Put bells on your gate and front door so you know when someone is entering.

Take time to sit out on your front porch so people know you are observing your block. (Continued on page 5)

Know Your Neighbors •

Have neighbors keep an eye out and report suspicious activity.

If you suspect someone is in your home, get out immediately and go to a neighbor’s house. Call 9-1-1!

Get to know your neighbors by organizing an annual National Night Out event for your block.

Tips To Protect Your Car Secure Your Vehicle •

Lock your car and roll up the windows.

If you are running errands and have valuables in your car, carry them with you or hide them before reaching your next destination.

Keep all money, purses, wallets, valuables and electronics (including chargers) out of plain view, even while parked in front of your home or in the driveway.

Invest in anti-theft devices for your car.

Avoid Danger •

Park in well-lit areas and as close to the door as possible.

Learn your neighborhood.

If you feel you are being followed, DO NOT GO HOME. Go somewhere safe, such as a gas station or other open businesses, a police sub-station or fire station. Call 9-1-1 immediately!

4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, each 4 ounces 1 cup chopped onions 1/2 cup smoky or hot salsa 1 cup chopped fresh tomatoes 1 cup chopped fresh cilantro 6 flour tortillas, each 8 inches in diameter 1 cup shredded reduced-fat cheddar cheese Directions Preheat the oven to 425 F. Lightly coat a baking sheet with cooking spray. Cut each chicken breast into cubes. In a large, nonstick frying pan, add the chicken and onions and saute until the onions are tender and the chicken is thoroughly cooked, about 5 to 7 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in the salsa, tomatoes and cilantro. To assemble, lay a tortilla flat and rub the outside edge with water. Spread about 1/2 cup of the chicken mixture onto the tortilla, leaving about 1/2 inch free around the outer rim. Sprinkle with a spoonful of shredded cheese. Fold tortilla in half and seal. Place on a cookie sheet. Repeat with the remaining tortillas. Lightly coat the top of the tortillas with cooking spray.

Halloween Safety Tips It is that time of the year again when little ones get excited about choosing costumes to wear and look forward to going out to collect bags full of candy. Please make sure your kids are safe by following a few safety tips provided by Metro-Health: • Purchase or make costumes made of flame-retardant material and avoid lengthy pants or dresses that could pose a tripping hazard. • Wear bright, reflective costumes or decorate them and trick-or-treat bags with reflective tape or patches. • Carry a flashlight to increase visibility and light your pathway. • Do not wear costume accessories or masks that could hinder vision, including cosmetic contacts. (Note: It is illegal to purchase ANY contact lens without a prescription. Improper use of contacts can lead to eye infections, injuries or blindness.) • Avoid costume accessories with sharp or pointed ends such as knives, pitchforks or wands. • Parents should join their children as they trick-or-treat, not only for their safety but to enjoy the exercise as well. After Halloween, make a walk through the neighborhood a daily routine to improve or maintain your health. • Teach children to visit only familiar homes that have the porch light on.

• Trick-or-treaters should be careful crossing streets and drivers should keep an eye out for them. • Avoid unfamiliar and stray animals. • Residents and businesses should remove all tripping hazards from porches, sidewalks and entry ways. • Provide healthier treats for trick-or-treaters such as individual packs of raisins, trail mix or pretzels. • Consider non-edible alternatives such as stickers, party favors or fun pencils and erasers. • Parents should carefully examine all treats for signs of tampering BEFORE allowing your child to eat them. If you question an item’s safety, throw it away. • Pay particular attention to young children as they eat their treats, especially items that could present a choking hazard. • Keep allergies and health conditions in mind and remove items containing ingredients that could be harmful to your child. • Just as with food – think portion size. Make an agreement with your child as to how much candy they will be allowed to eat at a time and when. • Remind your child to brush and floss after eating sugary treats to avoid cavities. • Plan other fun activities for your child if diabetes is a concern and access to candy would be a health risk.
