Penny Lane, Program Director

3:16 For many years now, My wife and

These people are not millionaires—

I have been under a huge debt. This came about through our own mismanagement coupled with economic factors that increased the load exponentially under the laws of compounding interest. Three years ago I lost my job. Three weeks after that, my wife lost hers. We were not bitter, nor did we point blame. We remained at rest, trusting HE would take care of us. Accompanying that was a unusual sense of excitement, knowing we were in a position to learn more of His provision than we could ever learn if we had steady paychecks. As Christians it has always been important to do what we say. We believe we honor our Heavenly Father by keeping promises we make and paying off debts we incur even if it brings hardship our way. But as time went on, paying the debt became increasingly heavy. And I said, “Lord I can’t possibly pay this off in my lifetime. It’s too great.”

October 12 we got a call late at night

by some people that had lent us a vast amount of money. They said, “The Lord has been stirring in our hearts. This is not a “gift”. He told us He wants us to make an offering of all you owe us to Him. Your debt is wiped out.”

far from it. They are hard working and frugal. I knew the debt they were “offering” represented years of their life. Years of waking up day after day and working hard long hours. Years of sacrifice, carefully saving and investing the fruit of their toil. This was no easy “offering” from people that had an infinite supply. But in a way their massive “offering” was easy because they love the Lord. He is far more valuable to them, than what they own. But I knew what was going on. What was going on was Jesus. He was thinking bout my wife and I. We were on HIS mind. Jesus wanted to lift our burden of debt. He is all about paying your debt. And you know what? It didn’t come cheap. We look at God and we think He’s got these vast resources. He does. But to pay your debt costs Him everything. Everything that was precious to Him. His only Son, Jesus— it cost His precious blood. It cost Him suffering torment for your sake—to be tortured—to die a horrible death—to face the enemy in Hell. No, paying your debts did not come cheap. It cost Him everything. And He was willing because you are precious to Him.

Let me tell you something. Do you want

to walk free today? God wants you to do so. It is very, very important to Him. It is intensely important to Him. The most important thing on His heart is YOU.

Dave and Anita Rogers reside in Kerrville, Texas. Dave is pastor of Church of the Hills in Ingram and Founder of Lamb Creek Family Adventures. “Hidden within the pages of time, every town has a story to tell. They are stories of greatness. Stories with seed potential; each possessing the ability to inspire that same greatness in later generations.” Dave Rogers

Many are laden with debts of all

kinds. Some are financial. But there are other kinds of debt, such as holding unforgiveness toward others. Some reading this have been molested as children and you can’t forgive the person that did it. Every day of your life you wake up with anger in your heart. With others it’s rejection or having grown up in a home ruled by the tyranny of addictions. Others cannot forgive themselves for things they have done. The unforgiveness debt load can be lifted in an instant. It has already been paid for in full. The payment is in a heavenly bank account ready to be drawn upon the moment you forgive those toward whom you hold unforgiveness. I read an article recently about a revival in China in the 1920-30s. The Shantung revival. I found a first hand account about a young man named, Ka Chung Shen that hated Christianity. Ka Chung had been wrongly accused of murdering his own father and was thrown in prison. The real murderer had hired witnesses to swear Ka Chung was the one responsible for his own father’s killing. In prison, the young atheist came to know Christ. While there Ka Chung came to a place where he was able to forgive the man who murdered his father and put him in prison. He completely erased the debt owed him. He was able to do that because he had come to know the forgiveness of Jesus Christ for all his past sins. (You can read Mr. Ka Chung Sheng’s full testimony online at: missionsforum. wordpress.com/tag/shantung-revival).

You can say, “You don’t know what has hap-

pened to me.” You say, “You owe me” in your heart, “You molested me.” “You cursed me.” “You caused my business to fail.” When someone has stolen from you, they have become a debtor to you. Whatever your debt of unforgiveness is, it is not greater than what you have been forgiven of. Why do you think Jesus gave the example in the Bible of the man who had been forgiven a vast amount, but he wouldn’t forgive a little bit to someone who owed him?

Through the work of Christ

on the cross, we have been forgiven by God for infinitely more wrongs than what people have done against us. You don’t have the luxury as a Christian not to forgive. It’s too heavy of a heavy load to carry.

You want to see blessings flow?

Forgive those who have wronged you.

Why does Jesus go to the trouble to leave us such a powerful blueprint in the Lord’s prayer? “If you want the Father to forgive you, then forgive those whom you owe.” This part of the “Lord’s Prayer” are not magic words. They are not some incantation one says by rote then declares “Oh that prayer is so sweet,” then goes away unchanged.

The truths in this prayer hold the power to break bondage in your life.

They hold the key

to breaking oppression in your life.

FORGIVE OTHERS! As you have been forgiven.

Start living debt free.

Today. Lord, I thank you for giving your life that I might have life. I freely forgive all who have wronged me; and gratefully receive your grace, forgiveness and love for me.

Flu Season

Nature’s Remedies

Flu season

usually runs from November through March. Most of the time Influenza is more of just a bad cold but in some people it can be much worse. It can lead to Pneumonia and Bronchitis which can be life threatening. About 35,000 people in the United States die from Influenza and its complications each year and in a bad year where Influenza is pandemic it can be much worse than that. In 1918 the Spanish Flu killed between 20 and 100 million people worldwide. Prescription antiviral drugs may ease symptoms of the flu when taken shortly after you get sick. In many cases, however, simple home remedies may be all you need for relief of mild to moderate flu symptoms. Drink up. The flu can leave you dehydrated, especially if have vomiting or diarrhea. So be sure to get enough of the right fluids.

Sip some soup. For generations, caring parents have been serving

chicken soup to kids with colds and flu. But was mom right? Possibly. A study published in the journal Chest showed that chicken soup may help with symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections like the flu.

Be a couch potato. Listen to your body. ing the body’s ability to fight infection.

Rest is another way of support-

Humidify. Breathing moist air helps ease nasal congestion and sore

throat pain.

Make a tent. Need a quick way to open clogged airways? Bring a pot

of water to a boil and remove it from the heat. Drape a towel over your head, close your eyes, and lean over the water under the “tent,” breathing deeply through your nose for 30 seconds.

Try a warm compress. On the forehead and nose, a warm cloth is a great way to relieve headache or sinus pain.

Be a sucker. Cough drops, throat lozenges, and hard candy can be surprisingly effective at easing a cough or sore throat. Some doctors swear by lozenges containing slippery elm. Others recommend zinc lozenges to help shorten cold symptoms.

Swish and spit. Gargling with salt water helps get rid of the thick mucus that can collect at the back of the throat, especially after you’ve been lying down. Try nasal irrigation. To ease stuffiness and post-nasal drip -- and

perhaps cut the risk of getting a sinus infection -- some doctors recommend nasal irrigation. You can buy a neti pot in health food stores and drugstores, or opt for a saline squeeze bottle.

Line up a caregiver.

If a friend or family member offers to help, even if it’s only to stop by and check in on you, count your blessings -- and take them up on it.

Herbal Comfort

Many herbs are used to decrease the severity of colds and flu. While research has been mixed, many of them were proven to aid healing.

Echinacea

is the best-researched herb for enhancing immune defenses to help prevent respiratory tract infections. Several well designed studies support the use of this herb for the treatment of acute viral upper respiratory infections.

Andrographis

seems to be an up-andcoming cold season herb.

Elderberry.

A time-honored European cold and flu remedy is a tea of elder flowers and peppermint leaves.

Ginseng and Eleuthero.

Asian ginseng, American ginseng and eleuthero (aka Siberian ginseng or Eleutherococcus senticosus) all have been reported useful in fighting respiratory viruses.

Licorice root

has many properties that can relieve cold and flu symptoms. Licorice root is sweet and makes most herbal blends taste great. One study found that drinking 6 cups a day of a tea containing licorice relieved throat pain. This tea, Throat Coat, also contains slippery elm bark, marshmallow root, wild cherry bark, bitter fennel fruit, cinnamon bark and sweet orange peel. However, don’t take licorice for more than four to six weeks — it causes your kidneys to retain water and sodium and lose potassium. Don’t take it at all if you’re pregnant, have high blood pressure or low blood potassium, or take a potassium depleting diuretic.

“Winter Tonic”,

a product of Celletech, is used by many to combat winter illnesses. For the past 100 years, the alternative health care community has had their own answers to “winter illnesses.” “Winter Tonic Plus” is a proprietary combination of every “winter illness” type from 1918 to the present. It is updated every year with the latest “winter type”. It is reported that this product is updated every year with the latest “winter types” combined with additional targeting agents that can help your body adjust and respond to this year’s “winter illness”. This product is available at many quality health food stores for around $16.

Here’s to your health!

“Cracks on the floor, lines in your face Marking the time in this beat up place Hours and days, scratches and scars Old Towns, broken down cars What is left behind is just an empty shell What lives on are the stories they tell” Owen Temple

T

his new CD by Owen Temple, a young man (young to me!) who once graced the roads of the Texas Hill Country, writing about “Mountain Home” in his last CD, is a collection of songs by a writer who has matured. The depth of his songs causes me to wonder if he has been reading Joseph Campbell? Or if he has been hanging out with new people. I heard a rumor that he has spent time around Hal Ketchum, and that would explain some of the influences I hear. “Stories They Tell” is a keeper! I played the song, “Make Something,” for my freshman composition class, and they said things like this: “His song, “Make Something,” outlines the process of creating,” “Listening to the song makes me want to do something with my life,” and “His songs have references to finding yourself and your dreams.” Yes, all good things for college students to hear. And Owen had agreed to come visit the class someday. We watched his channel on youtube, and we were able to watch interviews about the CD we were hearing. Ah…technology’s not all bad. September 27 was Texas Heritage Music Day, and Jon Hogan and Maria Moss stayed over the next Monday and visited my class. We gathered outside under the spreading oak tree while they played music from another era. I watched my students respond, once again, to the power of stories and songs and Jon explained the history of the songs, and Maria talked about the creative process.

On September 27 over 50 performers gathered on the Schreiner campus, after a small jam the night before at the YO Ranch Hotel. At the jam I heard George Ensle show us why he is considered a great Texas songwriter, John Casner bring his stories and songs, and we heard Karen Abrahams stop all action at the bar with her voice and passion. Not enough space here to cover the day but a few highlights include hearing The Muses sing, President Summerlin sing a Jimmie Rodgers tune, David Harris surprise me as a “walk-on” (what a voice!), Stephanie Urbina Jones singing “Volver, Volver,” and on and on. Thanks to Chumbe Salinas, we have a short film of the day on the THMF Facebook page and website. Tony Navarra brought Jimmie back to life as always. Thanks to all!

The evening concert was a special tribute to Texas songwriters with Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines. My thrill was to give her letters from my students! The thank you letter she wrote me later also thrilled me. All about the heart…as Schreiner says. Learning by heart.” A full house sat in awe as Terri shared her life with us. I say let’s make this night a tradition in September.

O

ctober 2 is my birthday coffeehouse with guitar master and performer Will Owen Gage. He was showcased at Schreiner when he was about 15, so this return was sweet. And he has his debut CD, “Travelin’ Man,” to send home with fans so they can continue to travel with him. Les Mizell showcased him October 19 at a house concert. Yes, we all love Will Owen Gage. And I did some dancing.

T

he road was full of adventures, including a run up to New Art, Texas, to the studio of Bill Worrell on the Llano River outside of Mason. I was filled with the creative spirit as I drove in about 4 p.m. on a Thursday. We watched the river run, met with Samantha Little, and did some video interviewing with her. The three of us talked creativity, and Bill is a huge voice for coloring outside the lines. His new book, Places of Mystery, Power and Energy, is his story of his own experiences in this magical place called life. . I ordered mine immediately from Amazon and plan on writing a review. I read his copy while I was there, amidst all his painting, music, and sculpture. Of course, Ellie May Lucille Worrell was always close by, a big black poodle mix companion. Samantha Little from Mason, Texas, who plays around the Hill Country, was a surprise guest to me. Her first song talked of thunderstorms and the weatherman. Then she told us the back story, waiting on some good news that never came. Dashed expectations. I grabbed my video camera to capture the rest of our conversation, knowing that capturing the story in the moment made a difference. Now I am her newest oldest fan! Check her out.

T

he next day I headed back to Kerrville to accompany Rod Kennedy to the Schreiner Mansion music series, a collaboration between Schreiner University and the Kerrville Folk Festival. Dalis Allen, a gracious host, also acknowledged Rod as founder of the festival. All the artists playing acknowledged that they enjoyed seeing Rod while playing. At the festival, he sits backstage behind them. I was moved by the circle of love and respect that I felt as Albert and Gage took the stage. Chris Gage is a monster with various instruments; Christine Albert is a monster in the world of music, heading up the Recording Academy, Swan Song (her own non-profit that plays songs as a last request for people), and is recording her next album. I am honored to have an interview with her in my first book on Texas songwriters. Rod just kept beaming as a beautiful woman kissed his hand. He has always loved Christine. My favorite moment was “La vie un rose” by Piaf. Chris had the according bringing us France, and Christine has always paid tribute to her French heritage. Next up was Hal Ketchum with Kenny Grimes. The energy between them was contagious. Hal was a New Folk winner at Kerrville years ago, then went on to be a country star, met with a health challenge and learned to play music all over again through painting, and now shares himself with young songwriters, and is working on refinishing a old, old building into a studio near Fisher. Yes, he played his “hits” and shared some new songs off an album soon to be released. I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of that music. Meanwhile, “I know where love lives,” satisfies my heart! Thanks, Hal.

A night at Roddy Tree

with the trio called Slim Bawb. Jeff Hogan, a special person and wonderful percussionist, invited me, and I left with music to play in my car. Udu Swamp 1 and 2 are rhythmic vibes that fill your body. Yep, I said that. Go to uduswamp.com and get yours now. Then tell me how you feel listening. This is music to make you move. A discovery for me! Udu Swamp. November 6 is the Texas Music Coffeehouse featuring Oliver Rajamani and Texas Gypsy Fire, just back from Germany where he was sharing Texas culture and diversity. Expect an amazing blend of sounds as we dedicate this coffeehouse to Schreiner diversity. His new CD, Texas Gypsy Fire, features the music of India and the Middle East along with 7 Texas musicians!

Kathleen Hudson, Ph.D, is in the English Department at Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas. She founded the Texas Heritage Music Foundation in 1987 out of a commitment that stories and songs make a difference in the world.
