A unique opportunity to enjoy a winter recreation usually only enjoyed by those living to the north will be offered when “Eisbahn,” will make its return to Marktplatz. The ice skating rink will open the day after Thanksgiving, on Friday, Nov. 29, and continue to run daily through Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014. Eisbahn is open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Sundays from 1-8 p.m. Monday through Friday hours (before school is out for the Christmas break) are 4-8 p.m. but always 10 p.m. on Fridays. After school dismisses for the holidays, Eisbahn will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. In addition, the rink will be open on Christmas Eve from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. It is closed on Christmas Day. A come-and-go pass will be $10 and will include the rental of ice skates. Eisbahn’s setup will transform the Kinderhalle Pavilion into a winter wonderland, where ice skaters can zip around to music while benefitting a local school, a local charity and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The rink began in 2005 as a fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis, thanks to the Fredericksburg Lifeline Foundation. After three successful years, in 2008, the foundation found it necessary to find a new entity to manage the rink and run Eisbahn. With the backing of more than 150 volunteers, including parents, grandparents and students, Heritage School stepped in to save the Eisbahn tradition for the community. Since its inception, Eisbahn has grown in popularity each year — from 4,300 skaters in 2008 to a record 8,000 skaters in 2012. This year, organizers are expecting to play host to an estimated 8,700 skaters during the festive season. Those who enjoy the rink will be helping contribute proceeds that will be shared by the hosting Heritage School with its two designated co-recipients this year — the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Boys and Girls Club of the Texas Hill Country in Fredericksburg. Heritage School is a private, non-denominational classical-Christian school offering services to kindergarten through 12th grade students. ith the holiday season getting into full swing in Fredericksburg, the weekend of Dec. 6-8 offers plenty of activities — from honoring military veterans to shopping sprees to art appreciation events — to keep locals and visitors in the area celebrating. h First Friday Art Walk h h Friday, Dec. 6 h Highlighting Fredericksburg’s expansive artistic community, locals and visitors alike will have a chance to “pop in” on a walkable art trail offered all day on the first Friday of each month, which, in December, will fall on Friday, Dec. 6. Starting at 10 a.m., patrons will be welcome to more than a dozen local galleries, who will showcase various artists and mediums through demonstrations, opening receptions and casual art talks. Hours will be extended until 8 p.m. to allow everyone ample time to make it to all the participating venues. A specific listing and map of December’s participating galleries will be published in the Nov. 27 issue of the Fredericksburg Standard-Radio Post, as well as online at www.FFAWF.com. Many galleries will pay tribute to their spotlighted artists with a special meetand-greet reception, featuring wines, hors d’oeuvres and live entertainment, while others will offer art enthusiasts up-close and personal art demonstrations.
GETTING INTO the holiday spirit, visitors and locals will gather at Marktplatz for “After Glow” and “Light The Night” activities Friday, Dec. 6, sponsored by the Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce. — Standard-Radio Post file photo
h After Glow on Marktplatz h h Friday, Dec. 6 h Sponsored by the Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce, the family celebration “After Glow” will kick off on Marktplatz at 3 p.m., Friday, Dec. 6, when children’s activities and holiday vendors will be featured on the downtown square, amidst a scene of holiday lights and figurines, the community’s 30-foot Christmas tree filled with hand-crafted ornaments by local artisans and the 26-foot-tall Christmas Pyramid, a hand-made fixture from Germany which rotates various directions and spotlights different layers of holiday ornamentation. Traditional Christmas pyramids originated in Germany, appearing first during the 16th century. They are carousel-like structures made of wood with Christmas motifs depicted on several levels. The pyramid’s rotation is traditionally caused by spinning propellers at the top of the structure which are powered by rising heat from candles. However, the large-scale outdoor pyramids now featured during the holidays in many Germany towns rely on electricity for their powered rotation. Also featured during the afternoon on the square will be Eisbahn, the outdoor ice skating rink operated by Heritage School from Nov. 29 through Jan. 4. Cost to enjoy the slippery fun is $10, which includes the rental of skates. There will also be plenty of food and drink available on site. These activities will continue on the square until 10 p.m.
h Light the Night Parade h h Friday, Dec. 6 h Holiday cheer will shine through the Fredericksburg night sky in a lively style promptly at 6:30 p.m. with a laser light show — front-and-center on Marktplatz, facing the 100 block of West Main Street. With last year’s debut laser show being met with much success, the show was “a must” again this year … with some added new components. The show is free to watch from any other block, but those who prefer to get a frontrow look at the huge screen may want to consider purchasing a $15 ticket for reserved bleacher seating. Tickets may be purchased for those preferred seats in advance at the Chamber of Commerce’s Visitor Information Center, 302 East Austin Street. Just after the lasers have finished their wild spectacle, the community will be treated to Fredericksburg’s traditional lighted night-time Christmas parade. The large procession — all units of which will be adorned with holiday lights of some fashion — will wind from the front of the square down to the intersection of South Washington Street (at the Nimitz Museum) and back up the street so that the parade is passing itself in both directions at some points. The annual parade creates a festive atmosphere for holiday revelers, which is only added to by the fact that all of Fredericksburg’s historic district buildings are completely outlined in white lights, there are 80 five-foot diameter Christmas wreaths Cont. on page 15

h Kinderfest h h Saturday, Dec. 7 h Continuing a local holiday tradition, the annual Kinderfest celebration will be held Saturday, Dec. 7, by the Gillespie County Historical Society. The event is held at Pioneer Museum, 325 West Main Street, from 2-3 p.m. and is designed to bring the wonder and delight of Christmas holidays to the faces of young ones. Enter the museum through the Dambach-Besier House at the intersection of South Milam Street and Main Street. Children 10 years old and younger are invited with their adult companions to bring their Christmas stockings from 1:30-2 p.m. to hang above the gigantic hearth inside the museum’s historic Kammlah House. From there, visitors will be escorted to the nearby Historical Society’s social hall for a session of singing, refreshments, storytelling and hands-on crafts. Once the party is over, youths will return to retrieve their stockings and discover what St. Nick has secretly left for them. h Pearl Harbor Commemoration Ceremony h h Saturday, Dec. 7 h Although Main Street will be well into the holiday season, filled with locals and visitors partaking of Christmas cheer, many will take time out on Saturday, Dec. 7, for the more somber occasion of honoring those who have served in the military and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice during a day that will “live in infamy.” The Pearl Harbor Commemoration Ceremony will begin at precisely 12:25 p.m. (the recorded time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in Oahu, Hawaii) in the Memorial Courtyard of the hosting National Museum of the Pacific War. Admission to the observance is free. Special seating will be provided for Pearl Harbor Survivors in attendance, as well as sons and daughters of Pearl Harbor survivors and World War II veterans, so that proper recognition can be paid in gratitude for their efforts in preserving this country’s liberties. The museum, 340 East Main Street, is the only one of its kind in the continental United States dedicated primarily to telling the story of World War II in the Pacific Theater. Known as a “world-class” facility, the museum is named for Fredericksburg native Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz and all those who served in the military under his command. h Tree Lighting h h Sunday, Dec. 15 h Continuing a more than four-decade holiday tradition begun by President Lyndon B. Johnson, the 44th annual Christmas Lighting Program and Evening Tours will be held in Stonewall on Sunday, Dec. 15. Once again, the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site and the LBJ National Historical Park will hold the tree lighting ceremony, evening tours, holiday music, refreshments and a visit from Santa Claus. Presenting the annual event are the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and the National Park Service, along with members of the Stonewall community, who volunteer their time. Beginning at 6 p.m., the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony starts at the Visitors’ Center of the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site, located just east of Stonewall on U.S. Highway 290. Members of the Johnson family are once again expected to attend and turn on the colorful lights strung on the large tree. In conjunction with the tree lighting, a short program is held in which representatives from Stonewall churches take part. There also will be a live nativity scene. Following the ceremony, activities and entertainment are planned at the Visitors’ Center, including ornament making, holiday music, the nativity scene and a visit from Santa. Light refreshments will be available and the park store will be open to help shoppers find unique items for those on their holiday lists. The National Park Service is lighting up the LBJ Ranch for the public to see, and the Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm inside the state park will be open to visitors, featuring state park personnel dressed in the style of the early 1900s giving tours through the houses. A dining table located in the farm’s home will be full of foods prepared by park interpreters. Visitors are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and bring a flashlight for the short “Walk Back in Time” to the Sauer-Beckmann Farm and the “Memory Walk” to the statue of the former president. Along the trail, the Buffalo Soldiers will be doing reenactments and the National Park Service chuck wagon will be set up.

Local talents step in spotlight to sing Christmas cheer When traveling on vacation, kids often ask their parents, “Are we there yet?” During the Christmas holiday, the question changes to, “Can we open our presents?” This is the time of the season when procrastinators rush out to complete their Christmas shopping list. Others use it to finalize plans for Christmas dinner. h Rockbox h h Nov. 29-Dec. 24 h Rockbox will celebrate its seventh Christmas season with a variety of holiday music. They find it difficult to get into a “good old Texas Christmas” without a little help from talented songsmiths and singers. Their plan is to get those sleigh bells ringlin’ and those guitars tinglin’. They believe that “if this Christmas ain’t gonna be a white one, it’s definitely going to be a merry one!” Rockbox Theater is located at 109 North Llano Street. For more information, visit www.rockboxtheater.com or call 830997-ROCK (7625). h FTC Show h The Fredericksburg Theater Company production of Sanders Family Christmas will conclude with performances FridaySaturday, Dec. 20-21 at 7:30 p.m. and then on Sunday, Dec. 22, at 2 p.m. The musical is set in the early 1940s and focuses on the The Sanctified Sanders Family Singers singing a bittersweet goodbye to their only son, who is shipping off with the Marines as World War II begins. Sanders Family Christmas is a sequel to Smoke On The Mountain. h Live Entertainment h Other live entertainment during the week will include a Boxing Day at Becker Vineyards (Dec. 26) and an Ausländer Winter Music Festival (six nights of big-name live music from Dec. 26-31). Ausländer is the German word for outsider, foreigner, or tourist. Check listings in the Entertainment section of the Fredericksburg Standard-Radio Post for more events and music performances. h After Christmas shopping h Streets and most halls will stay adorned in Christmas regalia, and lights will twinkle, making the time after Christmas ideal for shopping. For some, it’s a chance to grab bargains to complete next year’s Christmas shopping. Some prefer to just take a stroll to enjoy the season.
FABULOUS 40s — Last year’s holiday show at the Fredericksburg Theater Company was “The 1940s Radio Hour” where players performed songs like “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, a la the New York Radio station WOV for overseas troops.
