HOUSTON AREA

NON PROFITS

By Claudia Richter

Providing resources and necessities for living through funding from resale shops, donations, and a community of dedicated volunteers. With the invaluable services and resources provided by Houston-area non-profit groups, multitudes of families and individuals have had and continue to have, a place to turn to when in need of basic life essentials, and so much more. Most of these non-profits rely on much-needed donations, volunteerism, and the sharing of special knowledge for training and information. Since the donations go to help 501 c 3 organizations, they are tax deductable. Donations given to local non-profit groups by December 31, will count for the year 2013. We are pleased to feature the following esteemed organizations in Resale Houston Magazine. Each has a rich history in our area and a passion for helping others when they need it the most.

Tri City Churches Resale Shop Serving Stafford, Missouri City, and Sugar Land As a part of the East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry, the Tri-City Churches Resale shop, which opened its doors in 1975, has become an invaluable community resource. If you live in the area and have household items, clothing, electronics, furniture, or sports equipment to donate, you will be helping fund the pantry and financial assistance programs designed for people in Fort Bend County. Also, if you have garage sale items, are moving, remodeling, or simply cleaning out your closet; please consider donating these items to the Tri City Churches Resale Shop. Donations are accepted daily. Large items can be picked up. To schedule a pick-up, call 281.499.8833. The resale shop is also a great place to shop. Designer and vintage clothing items are commonly found and for much lower prices. Current donation needs at the food pantry are: flour, jelly, crackers, bar soap, diapers (especially toddler size), toilet paper, feminine items, toothbrushes, and sample size toothpaste and shampoo. Hours of operation are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, 10 am – 4 pm, Wednesday, 10 am – 7:30 pm, and Saturday, 10 am – 4 pm. The shop is located at 425 Stafford Run Road, Stafford, TX 77477. For more information, visit www.humanneeds.org.

The Charity Guild Shop

Continuing Its Legacy of Service

What began as a group of local Catholic ladies coming together to help needy children in 1922, has grown to a legacy of service that has given, in the last ten years alone, approximately $3 million to children’s charities. The Charity Guild has maintained its status of an all-volunteer organization of exceptionally dedicated women. Forms can be obtained online to register to consign items at the Charity Guild Shop. The categories include clothing consignments for adults and teens, clothing for children, and jewelry consignments. Apparel can be consigned once a month and household goods once a week. Hours are Monday – Saturday, 10 am – 3:00 pm. Furniture is consigned by appointment only. Clothing items that are not accepted are uniforms, wedding dresses, lingerie, vintage clothing, homemade clothing, bodysuits, hosiery (unless new with tags), leotards and stirrup pants, socks (unless new with tags), swim suits (unless new with tags), adult/teen shorts, and pajamas and gowns (unless new with tags). For a complete list, and for more information, visit www.charityguildshop.org.

Houston Junior Forum

A Non-Profit Women’s Service Organization

Since 1946, the Houston Junior Forum has provided over 1 million hours of community service, nearly $10 million in support of HJF facilities and volunteer service programs, which also include nearly $800,000 in scholarships to more than 150 students since 1976. The non profit is open to women age 20 and over with the strong desire to help others in the Houston community.

The Houston Junior Forum is the founding chapter, and now includes nine chapters in Texas. Over its 66 years in existence, many awards have been bestowed upon the much-revered organization. HJF has been recognized for years of service, building a better community, and as an outstanding community service organization. Donating to the HJF funds the HJF College Scholarship Program, the HJF Endowment Fund, the HJF Community Grants Programs, and Memorials and Honorariums for loved ones and special friends. For donations through the mail, send to Houston Junior Forum, PO Box 7941, Houston, TX 77270. For online donations and to learn more about HJF, please visit www.houstonjuniorforum.com. St. Christopher’s Thrift Shop

Depending on Volunteers to Help Community St. Christopher’s was formed in 1954, and formed a parish in 1956 in the Spring Branch area. St. Christopher’s helped start Memorial Assistance Ministries (MAM), and provides outreach funds as well as volunteers to many vital community organizations and services, such as the after-school care at St. Christopher’s Day School.

St. Christopherʼs Hospice Thrift Shop

The St. Christopher’s Thrift Shop was started over 45 years ago by a group of local moms that had leftovers from a church garage sale. The shop moved into its own building in 1980 and by 1986 the thrift shop had raised over one million dollars to fund outreach programs in the community. In recent years, the thrift shop joined with Houston Hospice.

Fort Bend Habitat for Humanity

Celebrating 20 Years!

Most people are familiar with the goal of Habitat for Humanity and may know someone that has been a volunteer for this group that is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide. Founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller, Habitat for Humanity International is a non-profit Christian housing ministry that makes affordable homes and invites people from all faiths and walks of life to work together to make happen. Since 1992, Fort Bend Habitat for Humanity has built 66 houses, and this fall construction began for four more. You can help with financial support to fund homes, to purchase land, or to build infrastructure on property. Sponsorships are also needed. Each home relies on a sponsor organization to partner with Fort Bend Habitat and a home owner. Volunteer support includes helping to build homes, working in the Restore thrift shop, and assisting with office support systems, as well as mentoring families. Families are carefully selected, help in the building process, and receive financing through Fort Bend Habitat on a 0 percent 20-30 year mortgage. Each home built brings together many people from within the community that work toward a common goal, and in the end results in a stronger sense of community There are many types of donations needed at Fort Bend Habitat. Building materials from items that you are taking out of your home that may be going to a landfill, such as doors, windows, cabinets, building or remodeling materials that are in good shape, and working appliances that are 10-years-old or less can go to the ReStore shop to be recycled. If you have a vehicle to donate, call 877.277.4344. You can donate online or by mail or phone. By mail, please address to Fort Bend Habitat for Humanity, 13570 Murphy Road, Stafford, TX 77477. For more information, or to make an online donation, visit www.fortbendhfh.org.

Memorial Assistance Ministries

Shop at MAM Resale Store

There are many reasons that donating to MAM is a good idea. The Family Assistance Programs include rent and utility assistance for families in danger of losing their home or having their utilities turned off. The Medical Assistance can help access care for urgent physical illness and mental illness, procure insurance for the uninsured, and provide preventive health services. It is the goal of this program to help prevent workplace absences and school absences that would result in lost income and falling behind in school work. Clothing is provided by giving vouchers to redeem at the MAM Resale Store for children and adult clothing, which includes scrubs, steel-toed boots, nursing shoes, and other footwear. Food services include lunch bags and referrals to partner neighborhood food pantries; MAM also provides staff to assist with food stamp applications. Transportation assistance provides vouchers for gasoline or for Metro-money to enable travel to work, job interviews, or medical appointments. Other programs include self-sufficiency programs and classes, citizenship classes, back to school programs, and Christmas Share. You can help MAM prevent homelessness and provide services for families in crisis, as a volunteer, by shopping at the MAM Resale Store, by attending an event, or by becoming a MAM Young Leader. Humble Area Assistance Ministries

A Mission of Help and Hope

Formed 23 years ago, the Humble Area Assistance Ministries is the largest and most comprehensive social service agency in the area. HAAM serves much of northeast Harris County under the Comprehensive Energy Assistance Program and the Emergency Food and Shelter Program. Core services also include services to better prepare children at school, and also adults needing to receive education needed to qualify for better jobs. HAAM is supported by 30 Covenant Organizations, and many local businesses, individuals, and groups make it possible to offer a central location for a food pantry, avoiding the need for pantries to be divided between many churches and locations. A resale store helps fund efforts. Furniture donations, such as sofas, love seats, tables, chairs, drawers, chests, coffee, side, and end tables, armoires, hutches, and ottomans are appreciated. The resale store also features jewelry, computers, books, music, home décor, floral, housewares, linens, clothing, pictures, toys, and electronics. All proceeds from the store go toward the much-needed community programs, which without, would deny many basic human needs. These donations can supply a family with groceries, pay a senior’s utility bills, supply an adult with materials needed to learn to read, or help a job seeker craft an effective resume. Support HAAM and you will also be helping to fund a back-to-school program, summer children’s programs, job fairs, and holiday meals. Store Hours are Monday – Saturday, 10 am – 5:30 pm. For more information, please visit www.HAAMMinistries.org.
