The evolution of
Kierra Sheard .........................10
I remember hearing Karen Clark Sheard’s “Finally Karen” CD for the first time in November 1997. Like so many other gospel music enthusiasts, I was amazed at how the producers managed to fuse contemporary and traditional gospel so beautifully. One of the major highlights of that album though, was the collaboration with Karen and her then 10-year old daughter, Kierra. From the moment she uttered the lyrics, “The Safest Place”…..we knew she was born to sing! She showed and proved on her debut project “I Owe You” in 2004, and six albums and a decade later, she has become the voice of a new generation. I had the pleasure of interviewing Kierra two times previously, and she was the same every single time- jovial, kind-hearted and real. The only difference this time was that she was now a reality star! I think you are really going to like what she has to say in our One on One interview with her.

GET TO Know LISA KNOWLES
HASAN JAMES
She is undoubtedly one of gospel music’s best-kept secrets that have already made quite a name for herself in the quartet world. Does Lisa Knowles have what it takes to re-invent herself from quartet singer to a solo artist?
6 | ROOT
Do you realize you are gospel music’s bestkept secret? LK: I guess so. However, I never really thought of it that way although, I’m honored to be considered as such.
You are best known from the popular quartet group, “The Brown Sisters”. When you release your debut album are you going for that quartet feel? LK: It’s gonna be totally different. I’ve done quartet music for 21 years and I think there is more to me than just the quartet sound. I definitely want to show more versatility as an artist on my solo record. Can you give us a feel of the type of album you want to create? LK: Right now I’m still open to accepting songs from different writers and producers. However, if I had my pick then I would definitely want to work with one of my favorite producers Ayron Lewis and a guy from Memphis by the name of Marque Walker. As far as songwriters, I am still open to that. I talked to a few songwriters who would like to write for me, like Deon Kipping and Pastor Charles Jenkins. I don’t know exactly what we will end up with but I do know that it’s gonna be a great project and so
many people want to contribute their talent, so I’m very excited. Are you really related to Beyoncé? LK: That is one of those questions I get all the time. People harass me in the airport, in the grocery store…it doesn’t matter where I go, when they see the name Knowles, they just go crazy. I had a girl following me around in the airport and she said, “Oh My God, are you kin to Beyoncé”? (Laughter) I couldn’t believe it! My dad always tells me that we are related because Knowles is not a common name but who knows. For me to be in Media Takeout was crazy! At least they said that you were Beyoncé’s beautiful cousin. LK: Exactly!
You have such a distinct and amazing voice. Who influenced you to want to sing gospel music? LK: When I was younger, I always wanted to infuse quartet with contemporary gospel music. I was a huge LaShun Pace fan and as the years progressed, I became a Kim Burrell fanatic and I always loved Dorinda. So those are my three favorite and they all inspired me to create a sound.
During last year’s Stellar Award weekend, you sang “My Soul Loves Jesus” as part of the BMI Trailblazer’s Luncheon that honored Kurt Carr, Tramaine Hawkins and Edwin Hawkins. What was that experience like? LK: I still consider myself an up and coming artist and I realize that there are some major artists out there who have never been afforded that opportunity, so I was very nervous and I just wanted to deliver. I just thank God for the anointing and I’m very humbled by it. That experience has opened up so many doors for me.

Oh, Happy Day Edwin Hawkins
The year was 1969 and for the most part gospel music was only sold in “Mom and Pop” shops in urban neighborhoods. A San Francisco disc jockey played “Oh Happy Day” on his radio show and within weeks the single sold an astounding 900,000 copies and shot all the way to the #4 spot on the Billboard Pop charts; forever revolutionizing the sound of Gospel music. You simply cannot go anywhere overseas and not sing “Oh Happy Day” if you call yourself a gospel singer.
02
Stomp
Kirk Franklin & God’s Property
Kirk Franklin’s debut album was the first gospel debut to reach platinum status and went on to spend and astounding 100 weeks on the Billboard charts. That’s why it was no surprise when “Stomp” catapulted to the top of the charts with the melodic voices of God’s Property, the commanding voice of Salt from Salt & Pepa, complete with a “One Nation Under a Groove” sample that could even make George Clinton blush.

You Brought The Sunshine The Clark Sisters
The Clark Sisters were known throughout the country as the Saved, Sanctified and Holy Ghost filled daughters of Dr. Mattie Moss Clark. After the release of their 1981 classic “You Brought The Sunshine” was released, many people questioned their secular sound. The song was reminiscent of Stevie Wonder’s “Master Blaster”, as Twinkie Clark later confessed that their song was indeed inspired by Stevie’s song. “You Brought The Sunshine” was such a hit that The Clark Sisters were asked to perform the song at Studio 54 in New York City for an undisclosed amount of money but refused.
04
Addictive Love BeBe & CeCe Winans
With clean production values and style of contemporary R&B, this brother and sister duo scored big with “Addictive Love”, the lead single from their fourth album, “Different Lifestyles.” The song spent two weeks at the top of the Billboard R&B charts, ranked #364 on the Songs of the Century list, pushed “Different Lifestyles” to sell over three million albums and win the Grammy for Best Soul Gospel Album at the 1992 Grammy Awards.
05
Open My Heart Yolanda Adams
Known simply as “The Princess” of gospel music, Yolanda Adams is one of the most diverse gospel artists in history. Her Jazz and R&B tinged sound transcends race, age and denomination. Thanks in part to the award winning writing and production team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Adams’ “Open My Heart” was a mainstay at secular radio and on BET’s “Midnight Love.” Yolanda’s album reached double platinum status and introduced her to entirely new audience.
06
We Fall Down Donnie McClurkin
Dolly Parton wrote and recorded the song “I Will Always Love You” but when Whitney Houston recorded it for The Bodyguard soundtrack, it became a smash! The same can be said for the song “We Fall Down.” Various artists recorded the song but Donnie McClurkin DELIVERED the song, even with the simple chorus, minus the verses that are in the original song. At one point, “We Fall Down” was the most played song on the Steve Harvey Morning Show due to the many requests and popularity of the song.
07
It’s Time The Winans
In the early 90’s, Teddy Riley was known as the architect of New Jack Swing, and although artists like Keith Sweat, Heavy D and Bobby Brown benefitted heavily from this new genre of music, quartet brothers, The Winans, would not be left out. “It’s Time” was a well- crafted, bass heavy track that offended some church folk, but surprisingly made their “Return” album their biggest selling album to date. Yep Yep!
08
Shackles Mary Mary
Perhaps the most commercially successful gospel act of the 21st century, Mary Mary is indeed a force to be reckoned with. Out the gate, the sister duo’s inaugural hit single “Shackles” (Praise You) was a Top 10 R&B hit, a Top 40 pop hit, and peaked at #28 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It became the first gospel song in five years to crack the R&B top ten and gained wide exposure on both MTV and BET video cable channels. In addition, “Shackles” was one of the few gospel songs to receive significant airplay on many CCM stations.
09
Optimistic
Sounds of Blackness
Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are most known for their impeccable work with acts like Janet Jackson and New Edition, but in 1991, Janet Jackson herself convinced Jam and Lewis to sign Sounds of Blackness to their new label. The end result was the group’s debut album, “Evolution of Gospel,” which contained the group’s biggest hit to date- “Optimistic.”

Never Would Have Made It Marvin Sapp
To some the number seven represents luck. To others, the number seven represents the number of completion. For Marvin Sapp, the number seven more than likely represents a little bit of both as Sapp’s seventh solo album, “Thirsty,” spawned the impromptu hit “Never Would Have Made It.” In a time where mainstream music has lackluster sales, “Thirsty” eventually went gold and “Never Would Have Made It” was certified platinum by the RIAA. A song that derived from a place of pain after the death of Sapp’s father, turned out to be a blessing to the world.

THE
EV L U KIERRA VALENCIA SHEARD Hasan James
At only 26 years old, Kierra Sheard has already been crowned a legend in the making. She comes from one of the most successful families in gospel music and from the moment sang the first note on “The Safest Place” from her mouth on her mother’s debut album, “Finally Karen”, expectations were high. >> 16 years later, she has managed to bridge the gap between young and old and continues to reinvent herself. “Kierra Sheard is one of my favorite female vocalist. She’s a legend in the making. She shows so much heart and feeling every time I hear her sing! I love how she allows God’s love; power and light shine through her. That’s my little sis…Kierra Sheard.” - Jonathan Nelson Your docu-series “The Sheards” was a huge hit for BET and has been green-lit for a second season. How hard was it for you to be so transparent while the world was watching? KS: For the first season it was really hard for me to open up and let the WORLD in on my life. However, I find that the show is actually a form of therapy. It gives me the opportunity to expose my issues, play back how I respond to them and evaluate what I need to change, rather than someone else trying to expose them. It also gives me the opportunity to be more transparent and to let my issues help someone else before they make the same mistakes that I’ve made. It also allows me to share my life with other young adults and give them someone they can relate to. They can see that they can be in Christ in still enjoy life. You’ll definitely see more of that in this next season of The Sheards. Thanks to all of you who supported and kept the rating high. Throughout the show we saw you struggle most with trying to balance business and family. One instance in particular was when you chose Rodney Jerkins song over your brother’s song. Although “Trumpets Blow” had a great sound & reached #1 on iTunes, it was not a huge radio hit. Do you regret not picking J. Drew’s song as the first single? KS: Picking Rodney song was really not my choice. I always wanted to go with my brother’s song. It was kind of forced from the authorities behind the scenes. However, it was definitely encouraged by my manager to choose Rodney’s song over my brother’s. I like trying different things and going for a change. I don’t ever want to keep myself stuck in a box. But my true heart’s desire was to go with my brother’s song, and even if it was not that particular song, I would’ve loved for my brother and I to have gone back to the drawing board and chose a better song even if we had to go back and forth to get a hit. I wanted my brother and I to take advantage of the platform

that we had at hand! “Trumpets Blow” was not my favorite, however, I definitely considered it a blessing to have had the opportunity to work with Rodney Jerkins again! I mean, that’s almost every aspiring artist’s dream! But I really wanted my brother and I to have that opportunity on television. Speaking of your music, you have not made one disappointing album in ten years. When can we expect your next full- length project and what can we expect from it? KS: I am more than excited to release new music! It is totally different from the last record. You will definitely hear the evolution through the sound and the lyrics. I was blessed with the opportunity to work with Rodney Jerkins, Harmony Samuels, Israel Houghton, Diane Warren, Babyface, and last but not least my amazing brother J. Drew Sheard! Working with all of these amazing writers was a dream come true. My desire is to give my generation what they are looking for in Christian music! I’m fighting another world for the souls of my generation, so I have to make sure that I have the same creativity and amazing sound to offer this fast paced generation. I hope I can give them what may be missing in gospel music on my upcoming record. It has been said that imitation is the highest form of flattery and I know that you have a great sense of humor, but Lexi did a parody of you from your show “The Sheards”. Did you find it funny or were you offended? KS: I found it funny and I was somewhat offended. However, I understand that we all do things to stay popular. I chose to do ministry and I chose this career and with that territory comes parodies. With the dream that I have, there will be so many more parodies and attacks! Life goes on, it was cute. I’m ready for it all! Since the show ended you lost a considerable amount of weight? Did you go through with the weight loss surgery? KS: I didn’t go through with the surgery but I started eating better. However, you should definitely tune in to the next season of our show to see the later choices that I made. CelebrityNetWorth.com has your current net worth at $10 million. Do you think people underestimate the money that is accumulated in gospel music? KS: I think people do underestimate the money that is accumulated in gospel music. However, I have great parents who taught me not to rely solely on my music career. They taught me to invest my money into other things so that I can receive other streams of income. I’m blessed to also have a great manager who helps me expand my brand and take my faith to other territories. I’ve invested in real estate, stock, and my grandfather taught me “If you get dollar, keep a quarter,” I’m blessed though! I wish I could say I had the full ten mil’ in the bank. (Laughs)

SHINE YOU DON’T KNOW HIM YET BUT YOU WILL. ETHAN KENT IS GOSPEL MUSIC’S BEST- KEPT SECRET.
-Martin Williams
Your sound is so out of the box. How did you construct your unique sound? I deliberately constructed concepts and songs that were different from what we’re used to hearing in church. I love and study several genres of music: Jazz, Gospel, R&B, Pop, Rock, Hip-Hop, and Country. I’d like to say that I’ve pulled something from each area and applied it to my own style and delivery as a singer/songwriter and producer. What demographic are you trying to reach with your music? I am a church boy with a heart for the un-churched. I really believe that gospel music isn’t just a genre of music for “church people”, or just for “black people”. It is for all people, especially those who have never heard the good news before. Where do you see yourself five years from now? Five years from now I want to be known as someone who has been a good steward over the platform God has provided. I see myself developing as a strong brand, producing and writing for the best in the industry. Listening to your music, it is a sound that gospel has been waiting for. Where have you been hiding? That is a question I’ve been getting a lot. People think I just popped up out of nowhere, but I’ve been cooking for a minute. I’ve been serving in my local church for the past 17 years. I started playing and singing at church at a young age. I grew up directing the band, teaching the youth choir, leading worship and the whole nine yards! After getting married in 2011, my wife Audrey and I committed to getting the original music God had given me off my computer hard drive and into the hands of the people. So we’ve been working to get to this point over the last two years. I’m excited and I believe this record is going to be a big asset to the Kingdom.

During the show it seems as if you and your ex-fiancé were still very much in love. Do you think you guys will ever get married? KS: Not right now. I don’t see it. However, he is an amazing friend. Your brother is getting his feet wet in the R&B world. Do you really think that R&B is his lane, or do you think that he is just being rebellious, given the fact the way the two of you were raised? KS: I don’t think he’s just being rebellious. I’ve never seen my brother do things only to get under my parents’ skin. I believe that this is what he wants to do, it is his dream and he’s really following through with it. He is not allowing other people’s opinion weigh in on what he wants to do either. Given the fact that he’s young
If you acknowledge God’s grace, stay humble, stay clothed with humility, and continue to aim at having a clean heart, I believe the Lord will bless you...
and doing the total opposite of what our entire family has done, it may come off as rebellion when it’s really something that he wants to do. The city that you were born and raised in and that has birthed many gospel greats and the Motown sound is currently bankrupt. What are your thoughts about the state that Detroit is in? KS: Detroit will be fine! Detroit has hit many hardships and rock-bottom moments, but WE have always come back! Once we get the proper leadership in place and stop focusing on past mistakes, I believe we will make it! It’s just a matter of shifting gears and putting the money where it needs to go! I believe in my city! You are one of the premier voices of this new generation and from the outside looking in, it seems as though you are actually living the life that you sing about. What advise can you offer up and coming gospel artists regarding their life-style? KS: Be open and use discretion! I’m not perfect. The world doesn’t know my secrets and I don’t plan on them knowing them. However, I believe if you stay transparent, you leave no room for anyone to expose anything. If you acknowledge God’s grace, stay humble, stay clothed with humility, and continue to aim at having a clean heart, I believe the Lord will bless you and strengthen us to do what’s right so that we live the life that will match what we sing about. I really do believe that we have to mean this Jesus-thing…I mean it… I really do! What are you most proud of as it pertains to Kierra Valencia Sheard? KS: I’m most proud of my evolution in every way! I’m proud of my growth and never getting to a place where I’m okay with not growing or moving forward!

BEYOND
J.S. WI L L I A M S The only way I can explain it is you are the next best thing since Tommy Simms. Are you a fan of his? I’m a huge fan of Tommy Simms and have real appreciation for his art. He’s been very influential to what I offer through my music. So much of his music is timeless, and that’s what I strive for. Music like James Taylor, Donnie Hathaway and others drift through genres. You are not a gospel artist per se but your music has so many spiritual overtones. What genre would you place your music in?
S LEON B TIMBO Best of Both Worlds
It’s so hard to pick a single genre. Most days I’m R&B, soul and folk all rolled into one. At the core of who I am is a combination of Peter Paul & Mary, and the Temptations. I’m a hybrid of sorts because of how I grew up, and Gospel will always be a part of who I am. Congratulations on signing with Riverphlo Entertainment. How does your sound fit in with Vonnie Lopez, Keith Staten and Andrae Crouch? It really speaks to the vast musical intelligence of Mano Hanes. He’s a producer’s producer and has the ability to articulate different perspectives. Each of us receives the rare benefit of
a great producer that can successfully exist in any genre. Riverphlo has depth because of Mano. With songs like “What Took You So Long” and “Don’t Call”, are you talking about anyone in particular? Yes, and no. Both of those songs have references though. “What Took You So Long” was more of me being a narrator, interpreting a subject I was discussing with Tyrese. Everyone had a chance to see that play out online. “Don’t Call” was a personal experience. I wrote and lived Don’t Call some time ago. Both songs are me articulating a process I strongly believe in.
When and what can we expect from your major debut release? My new single, “What Love’s All About,” hits radio January 2014, with the entire project under the same title to be released in late April. The entire album is a definition of love. “What Love’s All About” is thematic; you can take every line from the single and realize it will be answered in the entire album. I’m a student of certain era’s that lean to artistic expressions. It’s like the old saying “When good music was popular, and popular music was good”. This album returns to that time. It’s a complete work, and a labor of love.
SWV Break Up to Make Up Hasan James
Diana Ross and Beyonce Knowles are two women in music who became megastars for their undeniable talent. However, both women received a massive amount of success as lead singers of girl groups. Speaking of girl groups, SWV or Sisters With Voices, were one of the most popular girl groups of the early 90’s. Hit songs like “Weak”, “I’m So Into You” and “Anything”, propelled the group to multi-platinum status and made them the voice of a generation. So why did the group break up after only six years? An even better question is why do girl groups always seem to break up to eventually get back together? SWV is back and Root Magazine got an EXCLUSIVE interview with all of the ladies and they gave it to us straight with no chaser! It’s hard to believe that SWV broke into the music scene over 20 years ago. What are your fondest memories of when your debut project “It’s About Time” was released? Coko: I can remember one day I was living in the Bronx and it seems like the next I thing I knew I had to move fast! SWV took off so quick and I can honestly say that I wasn’t prepared. I remember just traveling the world singing & selling millions of records. I also remember the along backlash that I received from the church because of it. We see time and time again how reality shows break up relationships. Do you think doing the show has strengthened SWV’s relationship or damaged it? Coko: I think this reality show has strengthened SWV. We actually went to therapy and spent so much time together. Although it was a little different from what we were used to, I think that strengthened our relationship. During the 90’s there were an influx of Girl Groups like EnVogue, TLC, 702, Destiny’s Child and SWV. In this day and age, there are literally no girl groups on the charts. Why is it so hard for girl groups to stay together?
Taj: The first season of our show is based on the beginning, ending and the reemergence of SWV. What do you love most about Lelee and Coko? Taj: I love Lelee’s crazy recklessness. She will do and say anything at the most inopportune time. Most of the time it’s hilarious! I love Coko’s style. She knows all about every name brand there is. She is always dressed to the nines with the latest fashions. You’ll never catch her off guard. That’s dope! You have done reality television before, so you know firsthand what it is like. Was the process hard for the other girls to adjust to with the cameras following their every move and revealing things that were difficult to reveal to the world? Taj: As a group, we’ve shot videos and television shows and they were a part of my show. They were very prepared and comfortable with the cameras being around. They’ve been doing and living with cameras for over 20 years so it’s nothing new. How did the concept of a reality show come about?
Coko: Women are catty! If there is no unity, communication or loyalty, you’re doomed. I have a girl group that I am working with and I’m teaching and grooming them the way I wish we were groomed. This business is tough and there are a lot of snakes out there! You have to be careful who is in your ear and be careful who you listen to.
Lelee: Well to be honest, we were approached a while ago about the idea, but I don’t think we were prepared as a group to take that risk. After seeing where the real promotional machine was (TV), we felt as if we had noting to lose. Our manager at the time (Cory) called the WETV offices, set up a meeting and they thought we had something interesting and profitable. The rest is all history!
You had a measure of solo success in the secular and gospel field after SWV broke up. Now that the group is back together, how does SWV conflict with your gospel career?
You are the one who put SWV together and you all went on to sell three million copies of your debut album. Did you ever think that the group would be so successful so soon?
Coko: I think you already know. SWV has some songs that I don’t care to sing anymore. While the girls respect it, they don’t like it. But I stand strong & firm on that.
Lelee: I never thought the group would take off the way it did. None of us did. We were just happy to be in the matrix. I kinda knew we had something because there was no girl group that ever represented “US.” We were from the hood, proud and we looked like black girls in every hood. That was cool for us. We got paid for being ourselves and for looking like ourselves. We had
Your new show on WeTV is highly anticipated. We are so used to the drama that goes on in most reality shows. What is the premise of this show?
no Puffy, no Dr. Dre. It was just three brown girls from the Bronx and Brooklyn who loved singing and wearing doobies (Laughter). Although we’ve done well for the industry, we still don’t feel like we got the respect that a lot of the other entertainers got. During SWV’s hiatus, Coko launched her solo career and got married and Taj “Married A Baller” but the world did not really know what was going on with Lelee until the infamous Sister 2 Sister interview where you stated that you fell on hard times. People seem to think that once you make an album you are automatically rich. Can you explain to us what happened to you during that time when SWV was out of the spotlight? Could you not just live off of royalties? Lelee: Wow, that was the most misunderstood interview ever!! The bottom line is, SISTERS WITH VOICES made a lot of money, but when the percentages changed, everything changed. Everyone was taking from us and we gave Power of Attorney to the wrong people. I didn’t know what Power of Attorney was. I got to the point where I was tired of frontin in front of people. I had to think about my kids being fed. I was still working in the business doing plays here and there, but no one really knew what was going on. I went back to school and got my GED and that was the best thing I’ve ever done in my life. I’ve never been a big spender and I’ve never spent money I didn’t have and I’m like that until this day. It’s just like if someone has a good job making six figures, if they have only the money they had up until they lost their job, bills still have to be paid. Eventually you spend more money than you have coming in and you can’t hold on but for so long. I got royalty money that I lived off of for a minute, but I used that to take care of my kids. I realized my kids and I needed health and dental benefits, so I axed the industry and got my butt a real job (Laughter). I wasn’t making the money I was used to, but I knew what I was bringing home and I met some great friends along the way. The moral of the story is to be in control of your own stuff and don’t allow pride to be your downfall. Pride almost drove me to a quick death. I know a real person who never left me and his name is Jesus. You better know him!

Sister J.S. Williams
I
It’s been 14 years since sister duo, Mary Mary, burst onto the scene with their smash hit “Shackles”. Since then, there hasn’t been a sister duo in gospel music that has given the Mary’s a little friendly competition. With their latest single “The Light”, could Tobbi and Tommi be the next sister duo to make their mark on the gospel music scene?
have to see what God puts together as far a particular sound for Tobbi and Tommi.
Your version of “Through The Fire” from Donald Lawrence and Co. YRM album was so amazing that it prompted even Chaka Khan to flip it to gospel. What are your thoughts on that?
Tommi: We’re sisters and best friends so you know how that goes. We laugh, cry, argue, but hey we are sisters! At the end of the day, we love each other and we will do it all over again. We come from a family of six and we know our big brother would like for us to keep it a secret, but yes we all sing! (Laughter)
Tobbi: I think that is absolutely amazing! For Donald to choose Tobbi and Tommi to sing that type of song was amazing in it self, but then to influence an R&B icon like Chaka, speaks volumes to us. The two of you have sung with Donald for so long. How does it feel to finally be on your own? Tommi: It’s an awesome feeling to actually do what God has graced us to do. Being in the limelight is a big thing and we are excited to take such a big step in the forefront. Singing in the background for various artists in the gospel industry has been an honor and blessing. So coming from behind the artist to being in the front line is a privilege that we do not take lightly. However, we still minister with Donald Lawrence and are still glad to be apart of the Company. That’s our family and we love what we do with one another. Donald has poured so much into us and we intend to utilize everything he’s taught us. Your current single, “The Light” is infused with a little CCM flavor. Is that going to be the sound of your upcoming project? Tobbi: Well, there are many flavors if you will to Tobbi and Tommi. We come from a traditional, yet contemporary church background, so our style in music varies. You will
What’s it like ministering alongside your sister? Do you come from a big family where everyone sings? Tobbi: (Laughter) It’s actually fun and I wouldn’t want to do this with anyone else. I think it’s an honor and privilege to be able to minister alongside those whom you love the most.
There hasn’t been another successful sister duo to come out since Mary Mary came on the scene in 2000. Do you feel any pressure there? Tobbi: Mary Mary are the sister duo icons of gospel music. They are like our big sisters in our heads (Laughter) and they are amazing artists. We are all representing the kingdom, so there’s no pressure at all. Tommi: Well one thing our mentor Donald shared with us is that we are aware of who we are and what we are anointed to do. We love the ministry of Mary Mary and we are operating in our “Grace Place”, working to make Jesus famous! We pray that we will tour and minister to the world together some day!

Top
Gospel Industry of 2013
There were so many ups and downs in the Gospel music industry in the year 2013. A few labels changed their name, while other labels restructured their top executives, leaving the industry wondering if the changes would affect the music. In some cases, it did, but we still managed to keep it moving. Where we lacked in music though, we more than made up for it in other avenues like television. Never in the history of gospel music has our adorned artists been “Water Cooler” talk by millions of people around the country. This year’s Power Players list is versatile in nature and we have 11 new entries, proving that so many executives made major power moves and great strides in 2013. We have crowned a new #1 as well, so sit back, dissect the list, and let the conversation begin. Compiled by Adrian Warren, Hasan James & J.S. Williams

Fashion Stylist, J. Bolin, has made quite a name for himself as Fashion Stylist to the Stars. He is the publisher of Denim Magazine, and has styled everyone from Housewives of Atlanta reality star, NeNe Leakes, to actress, Niecey Nash. In 2013, he extended his client base and styled a plethora of gospel artists for various award shows like the Stellar, Grammy and Dove Awards. The list included Tasha Cobbs, Michelle Williams, Vashawn Mitchell, Mary Mary, Sarah Jakes and Serita Jakes and others. At the end of 2013, however, was the first time his choice of style was met with controversy when he adorned Grammy winner and Reality TV star, Erica Campbell, with a form fitting white dress that sent shock waves through the gospel community, causing millions of people on social media and on various radio shows to have major debates on a dress that covered her up from head to toe.

James Fortune is a two-time Grammy Award-nominated record setting Gospel artist, songwriter and producer. His hit song “I Trust You,” became the longest running #1 hit single of any genre at an astounding 29 weeks. He is also a three-time Stellar Award winner, six-time ASCAP award winning songwriter, and President and CEO of FIYAWORLD Music. “Are you feeling fortunate”? I’m sure James Fortune is, as the tagline for his syndicated radio show has swiftly resonated with his listeners. With his “JPod Hit of the Week,” he keeps his listeners engaged and wanting more. In mid 2013, after the resignation of CoCo Brother ( Jesus Baby), James was tapped almost immediately by Radio One founder, Cathy Hughes, as the new host of his very own “James Fortune Show.” Going into radio was a smart move for Fortune, as his numbers tripled that of his predecessor in just six short months. Aside from being a label executive, Thornton came into this business as the mastermind behind shows like “I Married A Baller” starring Taj George from SWV and her husband, former Tennessee Titans player, Eddie George, Lisa Raye: The Real Mckoy and the R&B Divas franchise, proving that he has major leverage at TV One. Catherine Brewton VP, Writer/Publisher Relations, BMI
2013 started out a little shaky for Deitrick Haddon as he broke his silence on Inauguration Day about why his marriage to Damita ultimately failed. Whether it was true or not, the story gained some buzz even outside of the gospel community. However, even in the midst of the drama, Haddon still managed to release his latest offering, “R.E.D”, at the top of the Billboard Gospel charts and his DVD for his 2012 movie “A Beautiful Soul” were selling out at WalMart locations across the country. By October 2013, Deitrick Haddon became the break out star on Oxygen’s hit docu-series, Preachers of LA Haddon’s over the top personality and personal drama made for an intriguing storyline, making Deitrick Haddon a household name. Haddon is also producer and co-creator of the show.
Jojo Pada Independent Publicist, Ignition PR
13 This pint sized, no nonsense young lady is no stranger to hard work. From her days as publicist for the now defunct Motown Café, to her years as Senior Director of Publicity at Verity Records, Jojo Pada has come up through the ranks as one of the hardest working publicist in the game. Her client list in 2013 included the likes of Vashawn Mitchell, Anthony Brown, Erica Campbell, Israel Houghton and the I’m In Love With A Church Girl campaign. At the top of 2013, Jojo received the prestigious Sista Friendz- Stellar Women of Gospel award during Stellar Awards weekend. During the 2013 Celebration of Gospel, Anthony Brown and Group Therapy’s performance was stellar and Smokie Norful and son Ashton; shocked the world with their infectious performance of his single “Say So.” The story behind the music is that Pada had to fight tooth and nail to get both artists booked on the show in the first place, ultimately causing BET to cancel a certain Grammy Award winning artist and his group from the line-up.

11 Catherine Brewton can be laughing it up with Lil Wayne one minute, producing a major CD release the next, and sitting on a couch across from T.D. Jakes on his new talk show, “Mind, Body & Soul” all in a matter of a few days. Catherine Brewton is a renaissance woman in every sense of the word. As the highest- ranking African American at BMI (one of the top songwriting and publisher guilds in the world), she is responsible for making sure that some of the biggest gospel and secular artists in the world; receive their royalties. Let’s just say that Nicki Minaj, Donnie McClurkin, Future and Kirk Franklin all have her number on speed dial. In 2013, Billboard Magazine named Brewton one of the Top Women in Music at a luncheon held in New York City. She is also responsible for producing the BMI Trailblazers of Gospel Music Live 2013 CD, released in partnership with eOne Music. The CD is a recording of January 2013’s Trailblazers of Gospel Music event, at which BMI honored Gospel pioneers Edwin Hawkins, Tramaine Hawkins and Kurt Carr. “BMI Trailblazers of Gospel Music Live 2013” hit the top 10 on Billboard’s Gospel Albums chart, and is the first for a performing rights organization.
Ben Tankard & The Tankards Artist/Reality TV Stars
10
VP, Marketing & Brand Development/Co-Owner, Ten2One Ent.
12
Let’s keep it real; last year around this time if we heard the name Ben Tankard, the main thing that would come to mind is the top selling gospel jazz act that sold millions of albums while on Verity Records. In 2013, not only did we learn more about Ben Tankard the man, we also learned about his family- The Tankards, on their breakout hit reality TV show, Thicker Than Water. Whether positive or negative, The Tankard’s have become a household name due to their extravagant lifestyle, outlandish personalities and their love for the finer things in life. Whatever your opinion is of the modern day “Brady Bunch” with a twist, the final four episodes of Thicker Than Water reached a whopping 8 million viewers, making Thicker Than Water the highest rated freshman show of All Time for NBC/Bravo TV!
At the young age of 33, Phil Thornton has accomplished more over the last five years than many people accomplish in a lifetime. The former manager for Jessica Reedy has been a great fit as VP of Marketing and Brand Development at Light Records. Under his helm, marketing campaigns in 2013 for the Light Records roster, via television, radio and print were more effective than they had been in times past.

Mary Mary Artists/Reality TV Stars
09
Loretha Jones is the President of Original Programming for BET Networks, a unit of Viacom Inc. and the leading provider of entertainment for the African-American audience and consumers of Black culture globally. As President of Original Programming, Ms. Jones oversees original programming, news, development, planning and acquisitions for BET including such hits as Let’s Stay Together and The Game. However, it is her leadership on the hit gospel reality singing competition, Sunday Best that makes Jones a viable force at BET Networks. Last season’s finale (season five) set records for the network, delivering 2.6 million viewers, making it the #1 Sunday Best telecast in BET Networks’ history and highest rated season for the gospel series franchise.
Whether they are together or apart, sisters Erica and Tina Campbell are simply bankable stars in gospel music. In 2013 their hit show that adorns their name is one of WeTV’s toprated shows. Season 2 of Mary Mary, ended with a viewership of 5.2 million and Season 3 is trending to be one of the most watched seasons in franchise history. In addition to being executive producers on the show, Erica and Tina Campbell stayed busy in 2013, with not only their collaborative brand, but with the launch of Erica’s solo career. Even in between albums and while on hiatus, Mary Mary is still very much viable to the market place. Had it not been for them, there would most likely not be shows like The Sheards, Preachers of LA and Thicker Than Water.
Geo Bivins
General Manager, RCA Inspiration
08
Vicki Mack-Lataillade Co-Owner, Central South Distribution

In 2013, Vicki and Central South Distribution continued to soar with the 2012 releases of Tamela Mann’s “Best Days” and Lecrae’s “Gravity.” At Root press time, “Best Days” was still the #1 gospel album in the country with 375,536 units sold, while “Gravity” was the #8 gospel album in the country with 262,295 units sold. CSD distributed releases from Isaac Carree (Reset), Earnest Pugh (The W.I.N. Israel Houghton and Galley Molina Artist/Executives/Movie Producers, RGM-NEW BREED Music
05 In the early part of 2013, Israel Houghton was the recipient of yet another Grammy award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Song, proving that he is still one of the most prolific songwriters in the game. Towards the latter part of the year, Israel struck a deal with one of the biggest gospel labels on the planet, RCA Inspiration, to distribute his future recordings. Houghton merged his NEW BREED entity with Galley Molina’s RGM (Reverence Gospel Media) creating RGM-NEW BREED Music, a new multimedia and music company. Houghton also put his money where his mouth was and partnered with Molina to produce the independent film, “I’m in Love With A Church Girl.” The film is based on Galley’s real life experiences befre he found faith and stars multi-platinum artist, Jeffrey “Ja Rule” Atkins, Toby Mac, Stephen Baldwin and former “Cheetah Girl” and current Co-Host of “The Real”, Adrienne Bailon. The movie did relatively well considering it was only in 458 theaters nationwide. In it’s opening weekend the film grossed an impressive $971,826 and a domestic total gross of $2,387,730 in just five weeks.
Larry Blackwell VP & General Manager, Motown Gospel

Later, he became the Vice President and General Manger of EMI Gospel and was credited for increasing the visibility and sales of Grammy Award-winning acts, The Clark Sisters, Donald Lawrence and the Tri-City Singers, along with Smokie Norful, Kierra Sheard and Vashawn Mitchell. In April 2013, Motown Records announced a joint venture with EMI Gospel, creating the new label Motown Gospel. Blackwell continued his duties as Vice President and General Manager. Much of the roster from EMI Gospel continued with the new brand, including Stellar Award- winner Pastor Charles Jenkins, Dove Award winner, Tasha Cobbs and Grammy-nominated artist, Anita Wilson. He is credited with the successful career re-launch of Tye Tribbett, who experienced Billboard chart success and won a Soul Train Music Award for Best Gospel/Inspirational Performance. At Root press time, Motown Gospel garnered a record, five Grammy nominations with Tye Tribbett receiving three nods and Tasha Cobbs receiving two.
Kirk Franklin Artist/Host/CEO- Fo Yo Soul, Entertainment
03 In business circles, it is a common strategy for organizations to leverage their brand equity to increase awareness and profitability. Kirk Franklin led Gospel in 2013 with strategic brand extensions that included combining with Sirius XM Radio. On May 22, 2013 Sirius XM Radio announced that its gospel music channel, “Praise,” would be known simply as “Kirk Franklin’s Praise,” a commercial-free music channel presenting Gospel music, ranging from contemporary to traditional. For almost two decades Franklin, a multi-platinum selling Grammy award winner, has bridged the gap and united audiences. He continued this effort by joining GSN’s successful program, “American Bible Challenge” as co-host to the ever- popular Jeff Foxworthy. In addition to his hosting and executive producing duties of his high-rated BET “Sunday Best “gospel talent show, he also worked closely with the House of Blues in creating a brand new gospel brunch experience that was featured in locations throughout the country. As if those power moves weren’t enough, Franklin found time to sign a label deal with RCA Inspiration to establish his Fo Yo Soul Recordings in between tour dates. He used his popularity to introduce his first signing, The Walls Group, who has been experiencing BDS chart success with the release of their single “Perfect People.”
Congrats to Holly and Lemuel for grabbing the #1 spot!

He continues to grow in Hollywood for his influence in film. He released the biopic Winnie Mandela and Black Nativity to the big screen, as both movies starred Academy Award winner, Jennifer Hudson. Black Nativity starred Academy Award winner, Forest Whitaker and Academy Award nominee, Angela Bassett. In September of 2103, BET unveiled Jakes’ series “Mind, Body and Soul” with the hopes of capitalizing the nearly three million viewers of his “Get Ready with T.D. Jakes” television program. The talk show was a success for BET and featured A-List stars like LL Cool J and Steve Harvey.
Holly Davis Carter & Lemuel Plummer
Executive Producers/ TV Show Creators Releve Entertainment & L. Plummer Media
01 Holly Davis Carter is the epitome of a visionary. Over the past two decades she has worked in many different facets of the entertainment industry, first as a casting agent on shows like “Martin,” “Roc,” “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” and “In Living Color.” Holding a Doctorate of Divinity, Carter’s first love is ministry. As founder of Releve Entertainment, Carter has managed the careers of Donnie McClurkin, Mary Mary and Kierra Sheard. According to Nielsen, 1.2 million viewers viewed the 10:00 p.m. series premiere of The Sheards and when combined with The Sheards’ 11:00 p.m. encore, the episode attracted nearly 2 million total viewers. Oxygen’s, Preachers of LA had five consecutive weeks of growth in the network’s targeted demo of young women, according to Nielsen. Never Too Late Kris Erskine
GOSPEL NEWCOMER TONYA LEWIS-TAYLOR, HAS UNSELFISHLY LOANED HER TALENTS TO EVERYBODY FROM JAY-Z TO THE INNER CITY HIGH SCHOOL KID WITH NO HOPE. NOW IT’S HER TIME TO LIVE OUT HER DREAM ROOT: I had a chance to listen to your single and I like the sound! It sounds churchy yet contemporary. I think it’s in the vein of where music is right now. What are your thoughts on the Gospel music industry as it stands now? TONYA: I think that gospel music is growing and is finally at a place where it can reach the masses. My sound is an eclectic sound, but if I had to classify it, I would say that I am more in the vein of a Christian Contemporary or Worship & Praise artist. Therefore, my music has a lot of influences, but the goal is to make sure I’ve reached my core audience, which is urban youth, young people and people from all walks of life. I’m not just focused on the black church, I want to be able to go to any venue and be able to minister. ROOT: “Delayed But Not Denied” that’s the title of your upcoming album? What does that title mean to you? TONYA: Many people don’t know my background, but I aspired to be an artist before I started working in the entertainment indus- try. When I graduated from high school, I went on this quest to become an artist and there were so many roadblocks in my path. The music industry is not kind; people can be cruel and can really try to diminish your dreams. They tell you that you’re not cute enough, you’re not skinny enough, you don’t have enough hair or you’re sound is not like someone else’s sound. So, throughout the course of my life, I’ve realized that I’ve had opportunities, I’ve sang background for people like Mariah Carey and Mary J. Blige, and through those opportunities I was able to travel the world. Eventually I worked behind the scenes in the music/entertainment industry as a publicist, representing A- list clients. What I’ve learned from all of those experi- ences is that my first passion is doing music. So, “Delayed But Not Denied” speaks
26 | ROOT
to anyone who has had a dream in their life and you’ve been delayed, but God says you are never denied and if you pick up that dream and walk in the area, God will give it to you. So that’s the story of my life.
{
“Many people don’t know my background, but I aspired to be an artist before I started working in the entertainment industry.”
{
ROOT: As a publicist, you’ve worked for artists like Jay Z, Jamie Foxx and others. When it comes to music it’s so hard to work from the bottom up, but you have already been in the business for a while. TONYA: I was a publicist for Jay-Z and Rockafella Records for five years before I started my own Event/PR firm. I had a num- ber of celebrity clients and I must say that God has really been good to me. ROOT: I’m sure you saw some of the things they go through as artists. Do you have any reservations about being an artist? TONYA: “I’m not as concerned about the art istry as I am the ministry. For me, it’s about ministry and what God wants me to release into the world, and I didn’t feel like I was accomplishing that because of all the delays in my life.” All of the songs on the album I’ve written and co-produced. So being an artist is all about me doing the will of God and making sure that I complete the assignment that God has given me. ROOT: Talk to us a little bit about the Entertainers for Education Alliance. TONYA: Entertainers for Education Alliance, is a non-profit organization I started with my husband seven years ago. After doing PR for so long I was burnt out, traveling all over and going to every award show known to man. At some point you just get burnt out from the music industry and I felt like something was missing. It all began with a social initiative we started when we took some of the Rockafella Records artists to a school in Brooklyn. The principal said to me, “You know when the kids find out that Rockafella Records is in the house, my attendance is going to shoot up! My kids don’t come to school and I have about a 50% attendance rate.” That was a light bulb moment for me so it was in that moment that I realized that there was a big problem in our school sys- tem. After seven years, we are running after school programs, dropout prevention programs, and have been in over 200 schools throughout New York City. We have also been recognized by the Mayor’s office for outstanding service. ROOT: Do you feel that you are finally living out your dream? TONYA: I am. I’m so grateful that I have a second chance to do my music. I listen to the album as it’s being mixed and can’t even believe that it’s me! I can tell you I am in awe of everything that is unfolding. God said if we are faithful to Him that He would be faithful to us. I am just receiving everything He has for me.

Many people in their teens are still thinking about what they want to do when they grow up. At 16, you are already a sought after preaching and singer. How does it feel to be living your dreams at such an early age?
, d o
Are you most comfortable preaching the gospel or singing the gospel?
g
JC: It feels great to live my dream. God revealed my future to me and it’s amazing to see it come to pass. There is much more that I want to accomplish and this is only the beginning. I look forward to what God is going to do in the future.
JC: I honestly can’t say that I’m comfortable choosing one over the other. I love both preaching and singing equally. They are both my calling and I would not trade either one of them for the world. What is a normal day like for you? Do you attend high school or do you have a tutor? JC: A typical day for me is doing classwork because I am homeschooled. I also spend time with my family, go to the movies, get my hair and nails done and hang out with my friends.

he name Timothy Wright is synonymous with choir music. Before his untimely death in 2009, Wright gave the world hits like “Who’s On The Lords Side”, “I’ve Been Born Again,” “Trouble Don’t Last Always” and countless others. But with tragedy, comes triumph and the Wright legacy continues with his sons. Brooklyn native, Derrick Wright, has been surrounded by music all his life. As musical director for Grammy and Academy award winner Adele, Derrick Wright fearlessly returned
Do you think that there is a stigma placed on youth who are called to preach or sing the gospel, that they have not been through enough life challenges to effectively do either of the two? JC: There maybe a stigma, but I believe God calls both the young and the old to spread the gospel. Bobby Jones said “God doesn’t call the qualified, he qualifies the called” and I believe that to be true. No matter where you are in your life, God can use you if you allow him to. People share their testimonies with me all the time and tell me how my ministry has impacted their lives. This proves that God uses young people to spread the gospel and to save souls. Your latest album “Greater is Coming” was well received. Who did you work with on this project? Do you write as well? JC: Yes, I do write. My Dad actually produced the album, and he and I both wrote the songs on the album. What is the biggest challenge being a teenager in this day and age? JC: Challenges come from not knowing who you are in God and not knowing your purpose. I believe if you know who you are in God and ask God to reveal your purpose, it will eliminate many challenges that many teens face today.

SHOWER DOWN! Meet Gospel Music’s Newest Family
Comprised of ten real life siblings, The Showers are the latest family collective to take the gospel music scene by storm. Quickly likened to the genre’s prized family acts like The Winans and The Hawkins, the Louisiana natives first gained notoriety aboard the success of their top-selling 2009 independent debut album ‘Hear My Prayer’. This effort landed the group industry honors from ‘Rhythm of Gospel’ to ‘En-Sound’ Awards. The album also courted acclaim from some of entertainment’s most endeared critics.
Their highly anticipated, self-titled followup album, due in summer 2014, will act as the group’s national debut. Led by the empowerment anthem “Praise Your Way Through”, featuring production from Bruce Robinson, Jr. (Justin Bieber, Fantasia, Joshua Rogers) and vocal production from GRAMMY® award winner Myron Butler (Tamela Mann, Marvin Sapp) and Shawn Willis, the song made its way through to the Top 30 on the Mediabase Gospel Songs Chart with an accumulative listening audience of over 1 million ears shortly after being christened Bobby Jones’ October “Power Pick of the Month”.
TYE TRIBBETT
The Showers debuted their latest single on BET’s Bobby Jones Gospel Show in Nov. 2013. Their emotionally driven 2nd single, “Better” written and produced by one of gospel’s most noted artists, Deon Kipping, is currently gaining traction at radio. This dynamic family act is slated to release their national self-titled debut album in summer 2014.
#1 ALBUM OF 2013
Sacoyah Montgomery
In a year when so many gospel releases were lackluster, Tye Tribbett’s Greater Than was a breath of fresh air. This offering was Tye’s make or break album, due in part to the disbandment of G.A. and the lackluster response from his previous album “Fresh.” His Motown Gospel debut, Greater Than, more than compensates for that though. From beginning to end the album is solid and Tye produced so much of a masterpiece that it is hard to pick a favorite song. “Beauty for Ashes” is prolific in nature to say the least, while “What Can I Do” and “The Worship Medley” is straight Praise and Worship at it’s best. “If He Did It Before (Same God)” is a perfect song for radio, but even that song can’t compare to the energy and musicianship on “He Turned It.” “He Turned It” is a musician’s dream and has turned out to be a fan favorite. In this day and age, it is hard to find an album with no fillers; but we found it. Greater Than is one for the history books. This project is Tye’s best to date and the BEST project to come out in 2013. Point blank, period! 30 | ROOT
THE REBIRTH OF D. HADDY
Jeanelle Drysdale
Award winning artist, Deitrick Haddon, opens up about the inspiration behind R.E.D., Preachers of L.A., his new life as a father and husband and ex-wife Damita! You are a singer, songwriter, producer, pastor and actor. Aside from being a preacher, songwriter, producer and actor, you are a popular artist known for your contemporary style of music and style of fashion. Tell us about your experience in knowing that you were different, in being called to preach and sing the gospel. DH: I was raised to be different and unique. At an early age my parents instilled in my siblings and I that we were cool just being who we are. If you wanna wear your clothes like that, wear it. Growing up in that atmosphere with parents that understood the call that was on my life, it really helped shape the person I am today. That was years ago but it’s amazing how your foundation can play a part of your entire life. So I’ve always marched to the beat of my own drum, I’ve always been confident in how I see things and how I give folks my music and fashion sense. God wants to use our uniqueness. How has the church at large embraced you because we know how many church people don’t like to embrace anything different. DH: In the early years of my career, it was more challenging, but now people are more liberal and open- minded. I think it’s because of time, you can only hold on to tradition for so long. It’s amazing how the contemporaries of yesterday become the traditionalists of tomorrow. What was once thought of as edgy back in the day has now become the standard. Sometimes my edginess has worked against me because a lot of times people are not ready to go there. My last album was called ‘Church on the Moon” and in my opinion it was perfect timing, but there was a group of people that just couldn’t understand how in the world can you call a gospel album “Church on the Moon”, as if I started some religion. It’s nothing but a title of a record with really great music. It’s my way of saying we’re having church out of this world, but people could not grasp it. On the other hand, there was another group of people who loved it to the point that it won a Dove award for the Best Contemporary Gospel Record of the Year. That lets you know that even though some people are trying to hold on to tradition, it’s progressing. You have been in this industry for well over a decade; please share your most triumphant moments, your most disappointing moments and what you learned from both? DH: My triumphant moment was the first time I was ever nominated for a Grammy! Also, winning that Dove award was very huge for me! I think my lowest moment was most recently when I made a mistake and had a baby out of wedlock. That was really a low moment in my life. I felt like I failed God, failed myself and failed the people that trusted me to minister to them. God really made a miracle out of the mess that I was in. He blessed me with a beautiful baby daughter who is the joy of my life. I appreciate your transparency. People need to know that we all go through something. You know how many people have done the same thing and God has helped them to bounce back? DH: There’s something about the breakthrough you get after falling on your face. Please tell us about having your daughter out of wedlock and how even that situation has been turned around for your good. DH: Well, it gave me the message that I have right now; really learning from that test gave me so much wisdom and understanding. Sometimes God has to knock you off your high horse to show you who he really is. You can’t go to the next level unless you pass the test and I feel like I passed the test. God spoke to me and gave me a movement about branding R.E.D (Restoring Everything Damaged).

I realized that I’m not the first person that has gone through this and I’m not the last. When God allows you to go through something, He allows you to go through it so you can testify so others are overcome by your testimony. God is in the restoration business not the condemning business. God came to restore us and to save us from ourselves, so without that situation, I wouldn’t be the man that I am today. I set out to be the perfect model of a gospel singer and a believer because the church where I come from, they preach holiness but I had the wrong understanding of it and I failed miserably. That’s when I really grasped the revelation of grace, mercy and the blood of Jesus. It’s amazing how you can have one perspective and then when you go through it, your whole perspective changes. Now I have more compassion and more love for people than I had before. Your sixth RCA Inspiration release, “R.E.D.: Restoring Everything Damaged.” It’s a rousing, multi-faceted divinely human experience. Please explain why you believe this album is a divinely human experience. What makes this album different from the others? DH: I wrote it in the when I was in the middle of my test; these are the songs that I sang to encourage myself. I would look at myself in the mirror and say I feel a breakthrough. Like David? DH: Exactly, there’s a song on the album called “You’re with Me’’ that I would sing to encourage myself. There’s another song called “Have Your Way” and when I got the track, I went straight to the studio without a paper or pen and the lyrics just came to me. I think this record is the most transparent record and it captures the mountaintop as well as the valley that I was in. I was singing these songs to myself and I was able to produce these songs in the middle of my test. “R.E.D.” seems to come out of personal experience. What are your favorite songs on the album and why? DH: All of them are my favorite songs. I recorded at least 45 songs and there were 16 that made the album. The few that’s truly dear to my heart is “God at Work” because my baby daughter is on there and she was just starting to talk and I was able to capture that on the beginning of the song. “Say A Little Prayer” is a very authentic foot stomping, hand- clapping song and I’m really singing from my heart. I mean I can go on and on. “Strange Land” is one of my favorites because it was the first song I started when making the record. I was in a strange land literally and spiritually because I had just moved to Los Angeles and I was really trying to find my way and I wrote that song in a strange land. My wife’s favorite song is “Just As I Am” as the message is clear and she loves the harmony. So I have my favorites and she has her favorites and my daughter who is now 17 months, knows them all. She can barely speak yet, but she knows the words to all of the songs of the album. Well she’s around music all the time so I’m sure it comes natural. DH: Since she was born that’s all she’s heard was the R.E.D. album so she knows all the songs. You recently got re-married which indicates that you had to go through a divorce. You have gone through things that everyday people go through. Please share with us the two greatest lessons you have learned from this life transition. DH. That was a tough one because I just don’t believe in divorce, but I understand that there are things that happen in your life that causes you to make decisions and once you make those decisions, you can’t make them based on being influenced by anybody else. Whatever God is telling you to do, you have to find it in the Word and so many people say that God is telling them something, but God is not telling them anything because it does not line up with the scriptures. I don’t think people get married to get divorced, and a lot of people say to me “You got a divorce, you better go back to your
make in their life. Nobody knows our journey and the things that only Damita and I know that are solely between us. We made a very hard decision and we moved on. We moved on with our life but we’re still friends and everything is cool. You can’t afford to look back, you just gotta move forward, you know! So you’re a dad now and I see that you’re enjoying it. How is it being a dad? DH: I love it! When I heard I was having a daughter, first I said, “Lord am I being punished?” (Laughter) Hahahahaha! DH: But then God reminded me that I know some good men who raised good women and that’s what I’m doing. I love that she has helped put things in perspective for me, so it’s an amazing thing to have a daughter. You are currently apart of the cast of the new show “Preachers of LA” on the Oxygen network. What was your initial reaction when you were offered the opportunity and were there any concerns that you had about making this move to reality TV? DH: Well, people are not gonna tell you this but I’m gonna tell you first; it was actually my idea! Oh wow! DH: I’m actually one of the producers of the show. When I was in Los Angeles I came up with idea and I spoke to some preachers and got them all on board and we made some things happen. So I already knew the effect it would have on the culture. We talked about it earlier, being ahead of the curve and being edgy, I believe that God gave me the idea and the next dimension of winning souls for the Kingdom is being transparent and going into unknown territory. And the reality in this mission is unknown to us; all we know is that we have an agenda to win souls by being truthful or being transparent. I am finding that a lot of people cannot handle the truth but it is the truth that makes you free, I think a lot of people have shunned away from church because we paint this perfect picture and people feel like they cannot live up to all those standards that we as a church project. To be truthful about it, the reality of it is we are all human and we all have flaws but it’s through Jesus Christ that we are made perfect so we have no right to judge people or shun people away because of their imperfections. I just think that the show is going to have a profound effect on the culture. The trailer was very edgy so it had a lot of people talking across all cultures. People are talking about it; they’re saying that these preachers are living these lavish lifestyles, what is this about? You’re in this new season of your life, what great things do you believe will come out of this new season? You have ‘Preachers of LA”, being on tour for ‘R.E.D’ and you’re a new father and husband. DH: I think people are definitely going to get to know me and know my story. I’m letting people into my life and I feel like God has given me a testimony to tell and it has no power unless I tell it, so I’m compelled to tell my story. People are going to love me or hate me, either way at the end of the day they’re gonna say Detrick is the truth! They may not be able to swallow the truth or handle the truth but I’m telling you the truth. When you run into Detrick, you run into a brick wall of the truth so that’s just the way I am. What do believe is next for D Haddy? DH: I have some big news in the works, I just found out last night, huge news that will shake the culture even more! I’m excited about some great things that are getting ready to take place in the near future. We’re working on our next film “Blessed and Cursed 2” and it’s going to go into production after all this reality show stuff dies down. So that’s pretty much it, I will always be making records and doing my little independent films, until God tells me enough is enough, I will be doing me. One last question, what do you know for sure? DH: One thing I know for sure is that God will never leave you nor forsake you. I know God has proven himself to me over and over again. I know that God is alive and I know He’s real. He’s confirmed Himself when I felt like He wasn’t around; He shows Himself, and He reveals Himself. God is definitely real!

THE BENEDICTION: Kim Burrell’s ‘Everlasting Life’ Thomas Warren
G
reat music stands the test of time. Appropriately, Kim Burrell’s second offering, “Everlasting Life” demonstrates her timeless musicianship. Released over 15 years ago, it is still musically relevant in both gospel and secular communities. Songs like “I’ll Keep Holding On”, “I Come To You More” and “Holy Ghost” are a few of Kim’s classics. Moreover, the musicianship on “The Tribute” remains technically unmatched by most contemporary releases that followed. Great music sounds better with time. Kim’s musical sound has breadth and depth. It spans the genres of Jazz, Gospel and R&B. We take a glimpse at her versatility on this

offering with songs that have traditional gospel rhythms (“I Found Him”) to melancholy jazz overtones (“Oh Lord”). Her warm alto to roaring soprano pitch, help deliver each song and its message. “Everlasting Life” deliberately showcases Kim’s musical prowess and control. Great music captures timeless moments. “Everlasting Life” is a classic and ultimately became a career milestone for Kim. What she delivers effortlessly on this project has become musical inspiration to vocalist and musicians alike. Over these years, Kim’s signature voice has become richer and more robust and sought after across the genre lines of the music industry.
Is it then conceivable that the album’s title is a double entendre? In as much as the content delivers the message of “Everlasting Life” from a spiritual perspective, could it simultaneously be introducing the idea of the timeless quality of music? Presumably not its primary intention, it does bare some weight for consideration. If we see how referential this moment in music was, and how relevant that moment still is, it makes sense to credit the title with double meaning. “Everlasting Life” has everlasting amenities, music being one of them. What’s even more peculiar is the fact that Kim did not release another album of new material for 11 years after “Everlasting Life”, proving that this offering was a hard act to follow.
