Bulldogs’ Baseball Team Car Show
The Bulldogs Baseball Team had its first fundraiser on November 16th 2013. The fundraiser was an amazing Car Show. With the help of many Angels (too many to name), the Bulldogs fundraiser was a great success. Not only did our families and kids have a great day of fun, but we were also amazed with some very beautiful cars. We are grateful to all those cars and clubs that participated in our event, without their commitment, we could not have been as successful as we were. For that we THANK YOU!!! We had so much fun that we hope to have another Car Show in 2014, in order to help out the team again. Thank you all for your hard work. Be on the lookout for more Bulldog news. Daytona Turkey Run

Rods and Classics USA at Turkey Run Rods and Classics USA visited the 40th Annual Turkey Run during November 29 and 30, 2013. It was a phenomenal event. This year, we saw some unusual crazy innovations in the development of an automobile, such as, the Jet Engine car. Not a car with a jet engine, but a car made from a huge 747 type jet engine. At garage row, many vintage race cars were on display. We also noticed the Miami Police Veterans Association had a 1966 Plymouth Police Car on display. Cop Car #9 had all the correct green markings, red bubble gum light, and police tools from the era. Standing next to the vintage cop car was retired Miami Police Sergeant Harvey Bach. Harvey was surrounded by many curious people listening to his old war stories. We also got to meet some of the stars of the 1973 movie “American Graffiti”. Cindy Williams, Bo Hopkins, and Candy Clark were on hand signing autographs and taking pictures with fans. Cindy Williams also starred in the 1976 TV Show “Laverne and Shirley”. On display were the cars and hot rods used in the movie. The iconic movie celebrates its 40th year.

Turkey Run Brief History The Turkey Run was created in 1974 by the Daytona Beach Street Rods. The club’s president, Stu Sarjeant, and his four year old son, Jim, had previously attempted to enter their 1923 Ford Hot Rod in the 1973 Ormond Beach AACA Gaslight Parade. They were denied entry, as no modified cars were permitted. The following year, Sarjeant started the very first Turkey Run. This event hosted 45 cars and was held at the Howard Johnson hotel across from Bellair Plaza across from the beach. Continuing to grow, the show moved to Seabreeze High School in 1982 and added a swap meet. By 1987, The Turkey Run had grown to more than 900 cars and relocated to a property at the Daytona Beach Airport. In 1989, the Daytona Beach Street Rods Association partnered with the Daytona Beach Racing and Recreational Facilities District (Daytona Beach Car Shows) and found a permanent home in the infield of the Daytona International Speedway. By this time, the show had grown to over 1,520 show quality cars and 250 swap meet vendors. Today, the Daytona Turkey Run boasts over 6,000 show cars and over 1,000 swap meet vendors, making it the largest classic car show in the United States. Rods and Classic USA would like to thank all our Florida friends who attended the 40th Turkey Run. We would also like to congratulate the Turkey Run organizers for putting on a great event! œ

Headers Up-close & Personal TONY DeLEON This month’s Headers is Tony DeLeon. He and his wife, Yamilet, are the founders and owners of Tints and More. It is a window tinting, hydro graphics, and sign shop. They work with one of the most unusual and creative graphic design techniques currently available. In a recent interview, this is what Tony had to tell us. Tony, how long have you been in business? We started Tints and More 30 years ago. It was a time when window tinting on cars had just started to become popular. Yamilet and I had just married. We wanted to start a business together. This was the right business at the right time. Did you tint anything other than cars? Oh yes, we would tint just about anything with a window. Mostly, we worked on cars, buildings, and yachts. Where does the majority of the business come from today? Today, the majority of our business is with cars. New technology has made it possible to use a special wrapping for cars. This is known as hydro-graphics. It is an amazing system. It can be used on just about anything.
18 Rods
&
Classics
How does Hydro-graphics work? It is a very pain staking process. The fenders, panels, and bumpers have to be removed from the car. Each section must be done individually. The wrapping might take 5 to 7 days, but in the end, it looks great. What is the most unusual car you have wrapped? The most unusual has to be a new $300,000 Bentley. We wrapped the car in a British flag. What are Yamilet’s responsibilities at Tints and More? She mainly runs the sign and business accounts. We are a family owned business. Between the both of us, we run the entire operation. Customer satisfaction is the reason we have been in business this long. We value all our customers, and we go the extra mile to make sure they are satisfied with our work. What are your future goals for your business? Our goal is to pass on the business to our son, Anthony.œ

Nostalgia The Kaiser-Frazer The Kaiser-Frazer Company was the partnership of automobile executive Joseph W. Frazer and industrialist Henry J. Kaiser. The car company was one of many that emerged after World War II with the hopes of building a better car. The company was known for building several models like the following: • • • • • • • • • • • • •
1947-48 Kaiser Custom 1949-51 Kaiser DeLuxe 1951 Kaiser DeLuxe Dragon 1949-54 Kaiser Special Traveler 1952 Kaiser Virginian Traveler 1952-55 Kaiser Manhattan 1953 Kaiser “Hardtop” Dragon 1953-54 Kaiser Carolina 1954 Kaiser-Darrin DFK-161 1951 Henry J DeLuxe 1951 Henry J Standard 1952 Henry J Vagabond 1952-54 Henry J Corsair / DeLuxe
These were all fine cars. But, the little car company just could not compete with the big boys of Detroit. Ford, General Motors and Chrysler were just too powerful for the Kaiser-Frazer. The car company went through several acquisitions and mergers to try to stay afloat. In 1955, it closed its doors and went the way of all the others that dared to challenge the Detroit Big Three. So, lets look at a couple of these interesting Kaiser cars. Most Kaisers were recognized by their heart shaped windshield. The engine was a 226.2 Cubic Inch six cylinder producing 100 horse power. They came in two door or four door versions. 1954 Darrin DKF-161 The 1954 Kaiser-Darrin DFK-161 was the first production fiberglass body sports car designed by Howard Darrin. It beat out the Chevrolet Corvette by one month into production. The Darrin was also known for its sliding doors. The doors slid forward into the front fenders when opened. A total of 435 Darrins were produced in 1954, making this car very collectible. They were powered by a Willys Flat Head 161 cubic inch six cylinder engine producing 90 horse power. Features included a three position landau top, full instrumentation, and a floor shift. An over drive was a common option on the Darrin. About 100 left over Darrins were purchased by Howard Darrin and he fitted them with Cadillac V8 engines. Greg Endres’ 1953 Kaiser Carolina If you were at the 2013 Harvest Fest held at
22 Rods

Tamiami Park, you probably got to see Greg Endres’ Cardinal Red,1953 Kaiser Carolina. Greg says his Kaiser Carolina four door sedan is one of seventeen still left. Making this Carolina a very rare car indeed. Greg Endres provided the following information to Rods and Classics USA: On the eve of the 1953 spring selling season, Kaiser-Frazer dealers & distributors were advised that the factory would offer a new price leader series, the Kaiser Carolina. Like the Hudson Pacemaker of 1950 and the Studebaker Champion series, K-F hoped that the cars would stimulate showroom traffic which in turn would lead to sales. Unlike the other two programs, Kaiser-Frazer (in this writer’s opinion) may have destroyed the company’s last chance for success. According to a memo dated March 20, 1953 from Tim Bedford (Vice-President and General Manager, Automotive Division) dealers were NOT supposed to actively push the model and make every effort to sell those interested in the car either a Kaiser Manhattan (not a deluxe) or a Henry J Corsair Deluxe. As Bedford put it: The Kaiser Carolina is a “price leader” and no smart merchant attempts to sell only the “price leader” merchandise, nor does he plan to attain his big volume with his “price leader”. The “price leader” item is used to bring in floor traffic and then salesmanship is called upon to sell up (Bedford’s emphasis) from the “price leader” item to higher-profit merchandise. Carolina models used the 118 bhp version of the L-head 6 as did other Kaiser offerings, and there was a choice of 3-speed manual, extra-cost overdrive and extra-cost Hydra-Matic as options. Rear axle ratios were 3.92:1 with the standard gearbox, 4.56:1 with overdrive and the economical 3.31:1 with automatic. According to Confidential Bulletin #92, no other factory installed options (including white sidewall tires) were available. This made the Kaiser Carolina models the only Kaiser branded vehicles not offered with an Accessory Group. (Oil-Bath Air Cleaner and Directional Signals were standard equipment items). The factory placed an announcement ad for the Carolina in key city newspapers, and made brief mention of it on a couple of the national magazine ads (small print at the bottom where pricing was listed). Other than that, it was up to the local dealer to place ads using mats prepared by the factory or order the Kaiser Carolina postcard as a mailer piece. Interestingly enough, all the advertising materials I have seen so far show 2-door Club Sedans. There are no factory photos of a 4-door Carolina that I am aware of. There are two other tragic aspects of the Carolina’s short life. First, it appears that dealers heeded Tim Bedford’s memo…total production comes to roughly 1 Carolina per Kaiser-Frazer dealer for the entire model year. Second, in a number of cases, Carolina’s became sheet metal or other item donor cars to restore Manhattans and even Dragons. There are less than 25 (total 2 and 4 door types) Carolinas reported buy K-F spotters and some of those were already beyond restoration when sited. ¶
