Hearts & Hands for Kids January is School Board Recognition Month and the Alamo Heights Independent School District is joining other districts across the state to thank these community volunteers for their commitment and contributions to our public schools. “School board members serve countless hours working to make public education the best it can be for every child,” said Dr. Kevin Brown, AHISD Superintendent of Schools. In a climate of change and challenge, they develop policies and make tough decisions on complex educational and social issues that affect the entire community and the lives of individual students. They bear responsibility and oversight in Alamo Heights ISD for an annual budget of $61 million; 4,700 students, in grades Kindergarten to 12th; more than 625 employees; and five campuses. Preparing today’s students to be productive citizens and the leaders of tomorrow is a tremendous task. As elected officials, school board members are the voice of their communities, serving first and foremost in the best interest of our schoolchildren. “We proudly salute these education advocates as they provide vision and leadership for student achievement, academic programs, district funding, and school facilities. Their service ensures that decisions about local public schools are made by those most familiar with the needs of our community’s children and families,” said Dr. Brown. “These dedicated

individuals deserve recognition and thanks for their unfailing commitment to the continuing success of our students now and in the future,” he said. The men and women serving Alamo Heights ISD are Melissa Vaughan, President; Lott McIlhenny, Vice President; Joseph Dubrof, Secretary; Bonnie Giddens, Assistant Secretary; Lynn S. Thompson, Trustee; Mike Morell, Trustee; and John Tippit, Trustee. Great leadership always begins with a willing heart, a positive attitude, and a desire to make a difference. AHISD applauds these local leaders for truly caring about our kids.

Alamo Heights Water System On Tuesday, December 3, 2013 the City of Alamo Heights Water System (PWS ID: 0150039) received notification that a raw ground water source sample that was taken on Monday, December 2, 2013 tested positive for E. coli. from well #6 located at 6116 Broadway at the City Facilities. Alamo Heights Water System immediately removed the well from service. Wells produce raw water, which is groundwater from a well before being treated/disinfected, and before entering the distribution system. All raw water is treated/disinfected before entering the distribution system as finished water for human consumption. Alamo Heights Water System collects 15 treated water samples each month from the distribution system and none of these samples indicated the presence of E. coli. This is not a boil water notice and residents do not need to treat their water prior to consumption. The City continues to investigate the possible source of the bacteria from the first test and will follow Texas Commission on Environmental Quality guidelines to treat the well. For more information, please contact Alamo Heights Water System at 882-1518. Under the Groundwater Rule established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Alamo Heights Water System will provide public notice if a water well tests positive for E. coli or fecal bacteria.
