Letter from the Editor It’s been nearly a year since we set out on this new adventure to bring Pinky’s Passion Motorcycle Travel Magazine to the public eye. With this 6th issue, we will celebrate the completion of a year’s worth of issues and the next issue published will mark our one year anniversary. In this issue you’ll read about the Cajun Pawn Stars, enjoy popular ride stories and maps, read about Places To Go by Johnnie Covington and all those features you’ve become accustomed to. New in this issue is Ask Amy, Tech Talk by Amy Irene White and upcoming events such as the Easyriders Bike Show and the Shreveport O’Reilly’s World of Wheels. And, in the February issue, our anniversary, we’ll have plenty of new material and will announce details of our plans for an annual event to celebrate. We would be amiss if we didn’t take an opportunity to thank our sponsors who have advertisements throughout the magazine, without whose contributions we would not be able to succeed. Please visit them and let them know “Pinky sent you”. Thanks to all who came out and supported our Lupus Fundraiser which we co-hosted with the Shreveport chapter of the Iron Order Motorcycle Club. We were able to raise over $1,700 for the cause due to your efforts. And, as always, if you would like to contribute, please send suggested content and letters to the editors to Pinky’s Passion Motorcycle Travel Magazine, 600 Pine Cone Drive, Haughton, LA 71037. Finally, from our house to yours, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Safe riding!

LAGNIAPPE Mardi Gras in Louisiana by Johnnie Hall Covington Mardi Gras in Louisiana, especially in big cities like New Orleans, is a huge, extravagant celebration which can begin as early as Twelfth Night, January 6th which is 12 days after Christmas. The Carnival Season always ends at midnight on Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday which introduces the 40 day Easter season. Enormous amounts of money are spent on balls, costumes, parades, floats, food, throws, etc. Large corporations, news agencies, and wealthy celebrants often reserve hotel rooms with balconies along the parade routes as much as 5 years in advance. It truly is the Greatest Show on Earth. “Laissez les bons temps rouler,” which means “Let the good times roll,” is often heard. Mardi Gras in rural southern Louisiana is quite different. It is called Courir de Mardi Gras, Mardi Gras Run, and is the “country mouse.” Courir de Mardi Gras has its roots in Medieval France where the land and money were held by the upper class and royalty. At the end of a long, hungry winter, the poor would gather in groups and go from castles to manor houses singing, dancing, and begging for food. They would disguise themselves and conceal their identity so they could poke fun at authority figures like nobility, the clergy, and the educated. Role reversals were common: men dressing as women and women dressing as men. Masks and tall pointed hats, capuchons, were typically worn and the colors green, purple, and gold, representing faith, justice, and power, were predominant in the costumes made from tattered fabric. Feathers and other animal parts like beaks and claws were used as adornments. When the French settled in South Louisiana, they brought Courir de Mardi Gras with them where it is practiced today in small towns and villages like Eunice, Basile, Choupic, Church Point, Duralde, Elton, Faquetaigue, Gheens, Mamou, Iota, and Soileau. In Eunice, men and women dressed in costume gather on Fat Tuesday (February 12, 2013) on horseback and flatbed trailers to celebrate like their ancestors. They travel a 13 mile route, going house to house begging

LAGNIAPPE for gumbo ingredients like chicken, sausage, onions, bell peppers, celery, and file’. The group is directed by a captain, Le Capitaine. The chickens which are donated are alive and they’re not just handed over to the captain. The chickens are thrown into the air and everyone joins in the chase. They look like a bunch of football players trying to recover a fumble. Participants pay the donors with song, dance, and music along the route. In Basile, the runners beg for nickels called cinq sous. If a nickel is not put into their open palms, they will jokingly dig in your pockets searching for coins. In Choupic, only young unmarried men are allowed to participate and they ride on ATV’s and in their pickup trucks. Church Point’s run is reserved for costumed men only on the Sunday before Mardi Gras. In the Duralde event, you must wear white face. The Faquetaigue Run does not allow anything like beads thrown. The participants must be in costume and the music live. Their route always takes them to the cemetery where Cajun fiddler Dennis McGee is buried. In Gheens, ghouls with bells on their costumes give participants a playful switching with a willow branch. In Mamou and Iota, burlap whips are used instead of willow switches. The Mamou events end at Fred’s Lounge, renown for its Cajun and Zydeco music. People gather in the street for a dance, a fais do do, and wait for the gumbo to be ready to eat. You can get more information about Courir de Mardi Gras at Church Point by going to www. churchpointmardigras.com or cpcityhall@charterinternet.com or by calling 337-684-5692 . Extend your riding season

Stay warm through the season’s worst weather.

A lot of people are amazed, and some just a little bit jealous that I ride my motorcycle year round. For those who might question whether I’m just stupid, or just acclimated to the cold, I’ve got an answer. There are several ways I manage to stay warm in less than ideal winter temperatures. And, I don’t have to look like the Michellen Man or the Pillsbury Dough Boy while doing it. I believe if you dress appropriately, there is no reason you won’t be able to withstand temperatures dipping into the teens. Some of my tips to extend your riding season and stay warm through the season’s worst weather follow: First, you should learn to layer your clothes. Thin layers are best. Cotton, flannel and wool are good inner layers. Under Armor makes a quality thin insulated under layer for about $50 per piece in fashinable colors and fits for both men and women. The product can be found on line or at local stores like Bass Pro Shop and Academy Sports. Select a good outer layer to stay insulated, like a good leather jacket. Leather is a perfect outer layer that will cut the wind. Leather gloves, a full faced helmet, warm socks and leather riding boots can all help you stay warm and extend your riding season. Still not warm enough? Heated gear might be the answer. Gerbing heated gear offers an option for those who want to continue to ride year round in the harshest of conditions. Gerbing offers liner systems which are both battery and/or power outlet enabled. They offer jacket liners, heated pants liners, heated gloves, glove liners and heated shoe inserts which all can be adjusted with the temperature control system. I have both the jacket liner and heated glove liner, and find the combination of both items make it possible for me to ride year round. The power supply connects directly to your motorcycle’s battery and is easy to install. Minden Motorsports is a local provider and installer of heated gear. See their ad below, give them a call, and tell them Pinky sent you.

SENA MOTORCYCLE HEADSET BLUETOOTH CAPABLE SOLD AT MINDEN MOTORSPORTS , Minden, Louisiana

There are a few pieces of gear that I can’t, or wouldn’t want to, do without, like heated gear in the winter months, avaiable at Minden Motorsports or one find I recently found that I don’t ever want to be withouth, the SENA Motorcycle Headset. This headset fits easily into a full faced helmet, like mine shown above. Installation only takes a few minutes, and with it’s bluetooth capability, I was able to connect to my cell phone in just a few more minutes. Electronics are often bothersome because of their difficulty in use, but I found that the SENA headset was idiot proof. Once installed, I could nestle my cell phone in my saddlebag or windshield bag. This bluetooth capability does away with yet another mount for the phone on the handlebars. Because I was synced to my cell phone, I was able to ride and listen to my iPod. The full face helmet and quality speakers make it easy to hear the music, and a large, easy to find volume control allowed me to increase the volume when I turned on to the interstate. Since up to four units can be synced, I was also able to talk to my husband who was riding beside me. Gone are the days of having to try to get his attention to pull over for a break. Now I can just tell him when I’m ready to stop. I can also point out interesting things on the road, so he doesn’t miss anything, and he can do the same for me. The ability to warn of dangerous situations on the road, by voice rather than signaling is another great bonus. It wasn’t long before my phone rang, and with just a touch of the button conveniently located on the left side of my helmet, I was able to answer. When the call was completed, my music went back to playing. It wasn’t long before I decided I wanted to place a call, and I found it was really easy to dial by voice command. As long as the number is saved in my smart phone, I am able to place a call while on the road. Some say this is just too much technology and takes away from the freedom of the ride. I say it enhances it. The SENA Motorcycle Headset is available at Mindent Motorsports (see ad adjacent page), for about $400 a set. 11

Speaking of gumbo, did you know that chicken and sausage gumbo are typically served in the fall and winter and shrimp and okra gumbo are served in the spring and summer?

Along the Mississippi River levees in Louisiana, communities like Reserve, Garyville, Gramercy, Lutcher, and Paulina, revelers welcome Papa Noel on Christmas Eve by simultaneously lighting huge bonfires. It is a custom that Europeans brought with them to the banks of the Mississippi in the 1720’s. Families start collecting firewood for the fires well in advance. Children who are out of school for the Thanksgiving holidays join in the fun of collecting and stacking the wood. Before the fires are lit at 7:00 P.M., there’s a party already going on. Everyone brings lawn chairs, even those that come by boat. There

Enoch’s Stomp Vineyard and Winery is located at 871 Ferguson Road (FM4312) Harleton, Texas 75651 which is about 15 miles northwest of Marshall in Harrison County. Enoch’s Stomp sits on 90 acres and was founded by Altus Koegelenberg and Jon Kral. Altus is a fifth generation grape grower from South Africa who relocated his family to East Texas in 2003. He met Jon Kral, a chemist, and the two started Enoch’s Stomp. Special events like wine festivals are held during the year and you can tour the winery or stay in the lodge. It’s such a beautiful setting, people even get married there. Enoch’s Café is only open on Fridays and Saturdays and they serve a variety of dishes including the following: Flatiron Steak Crostini for $14.50 which is a dozen slices of toasted baguette, spread with herb butter, and covered with thin slices of rare flat-iron steak; Croque-Monsieur with side salad for $12.00, a grilled ham sandwich with Gruyere cheese and Bechamel sauce; and a dessert of Blueberry Gateau with lemon whipped cream for $5.00. LAGNIAPPE an anniversary or second honeymoon. You can get more information by calling 903-2401587 or by email at info@enochsstomp.com A pasty [past ee] is a baked pastry that is the national dish of Cornwall, Great Britain. It is shaped like the capital letter “D” and is filled with beef or some other meat and root vegetables like potatoes, onions, and turnips. Cornish miners have eaten them through the centuries and now they’ve spread around the world. Miners liked them because they were a complete meal which could be carried easily and eaten without cutlery. The crust would not crumble easily which allowed the miner to hold the pasty on the very edge because miners’ hands were often contaminated with arsenic. The miners’ wives who baked the pasties joked that the pasty had to be tough enough to survive a fall down a mine shaft. The crust would be discarded to be eaten by the “Knockers,” spirits who inhabited the mines and made knocking sounds to warn the miners of impending tunnel collapse. Calumet, Michigan, a small town in the Upper Peninsula, hosts a Pasty Fest every year in late June. Copper miners, many originally from Cornwall and other parts of Europe, introduced pasties to the Red Jacket area long ago. At the annual festival there are pasty eating contests, games, and events like tug-of-war where the losers must dive into an inflatable pool filled with ketchup. Almost anything can be put into a pasty. Pork, venison, or mutton often replace the beef. Some people like carrots in the pasty and others say carrots don’t belong in a true pasty. It’s generally accepted that the turnip must be a rutabaga. If you have no meat, double up on the potato and the pasty is then called a “tiddy oggy.” Here’s a playground rhyme from the 1940’s: “Matthew, Mark, Luke and John ate a pasty five feet long. Bit it once, bit it twice. Oh, My Lord, it’s full of mice.” Other cultures make pastries like the pasty: Italian calzones, Spanish empanadas, and Natchitoches meat pies. Pasty Crust 3 cups plain flour, 1 ½ sticks cold butter, cut into small pieces, 1 ½ teaspoons salt, 6 tablespoons cold water. Cut butter into salt and flour and start adding water 1 tablespoon at a time and mix. You may not need all the water. Form dough into a large ball, dust with flour, wrap with plastic wrap, and chill at least 30 minutes. Filling 1 pound ground lean beef, 1 pound ground pork, 5 shredded carrots, 2 large chopped onions, 2 peeled and cubed potatoes, ½ cup peeled and chopped turnip, 2 teaspoons salt, ½ teaspoon black pepper Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Divide dough into 6 equal parts. Roll each piece of dough into a ten inch circle on a lightly floured board. Put 1 to 1 ½ cups filling on one half of the round. Moisten the edges with water and fold over and seal by crimping with a fork. Transfer to a greased baking sheet. Cut small slits in the crust to allow steam to escape. The miners’ pasties were often personalized with their initials. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Put a pat of butter on each pasty and let them cool on the sheet 15 minutes. These can be served warm or cold and are often served with ketchup. (I suggest that you precook the filling until the vegetables are almost done. Cool the filling before using it to fill the pasty dough.) Genuine Cornish pasties can be ordered from Pasty Central in Calumet, Michigan, at 1-877-727-8911. Natchitoches Meat Pies have been called “one of the 500 things you’ve got to eat before it’s too late.” One of the best places to do that is Lasyone’s Meat Pie Restaurant (318-352-3353) in historic Natchitoches, Louisiana. Lasyone’s is located at 622 Second Street and is open Monday through Saturday 7:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. Maybe you’ll have a Natchitoches Meat Pie with Dirty Rice, Fried Green Beans, and Bread Pudding with Rum Sauce for dessert. more.

Jimmie’s sons, Chad, passed away on Oct. 22, 2006 in a plane crash carrying Jimmie, Peggy, Jenny (Chad’s wife at the time) and a private pilot. Chad was the only fatality in the crash. He was a cue collector and a good player with a huge personality. There is somewhat of a memorial shrine to Chad in the store that includes quite a bit of pool memorabilia. I stopped in the store and visited with Jimmie, chatted about my motorcycle and his riding experience. When I showed Jimmie my brother’s memorial bike, he told me about his son’s death. He said he was so close to the plane, but couldn’t get to Chad to save him. He showed me two black and white bracelets that he wore, one on each wrist, to memorialize Chad, and told me that each day he gave one away. That day, Jimmie took a bracelet off his arm and handed it to me. As I was placing it on my wrist, he said “You don’t have to wear it all the time. Just put it somewhere special, and when you look at it, remember Chad, and remember how short life is, and how quickly it can be taken from you.” I did that, and I think of Chad often and honor him by keeping my family close, and giving thanks for them each day. Thank you Jimmie!

Gold & Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas, made internationally famous in HISTORY’s hit series Pawn Stars, isn’t the only family-run shop in America that’s bursting at the seams with one-of-a-kind historical items and fascinating stories. Silver Dollar Pawn & Jewelry Center in Alexandria, Louisiana owned and operated by Jimmie DeRamus and his family, is a colorful place that collects an eclectic array of historical merchandise, with a daily stream of quirky local characters attempting to sell, purchase or pawn items - including livestock. Jimmie, a.k.a. “Big Daddy,” has been buying and selling for over 27 years and, no matter whether he’s haggling over the price of a vintage 1936 Ford flathead V8, a herd of donkeys or Jerry Lee Lewis’ first recording, he’s as savvy as they come. That said, it’s also important to Jimmie that both parties leave the deal with smiles on their faces. That’s how they do things in central Louisiana, where many of his customers are his neighbors. Jimmie is a walking encyclopedia when it comes to valuable and historic collectibles. He’s a cautious buyer - one has to be to survive in this business - but also unafraid to make a bold move when he spots a true gem. For example, in the premiere episode, he doesn’t think twice about making a staggering $500,000 offer to acquire rare $10,000 and $5,000 bank notes. Silver Dollar Pawn is one of the biggest shops in the 14

south, a whopping 20,000 square feet that houses more than 100,000 artifacts. It’s a veritable museum, frequented by school and bus tours. Each episode will focus not just on interesting items but the unique dynamic of Jimmie and his family, his daughter Tammie DeRamus and his younger brother Johnnie DeRamus, and their circle of expert appraisers and buyers from the area. Cajun Pawn Stars is produced for HISTORY by Leftfield Pictures. Executive Producers for HISTORY are Paul Cabana and Mary Donahue. Brent Montgomery and David George are Executive Producers for Leftfield Pictures. Joel Patterson is Showrunner for Leftfield.

For the ladies

Motoress Beauty Gear truly is for women who ride. I met the owner, Vicki, on line and she sent me some samples to review. I’ve tried the lipstick, lip glaze, lip gloss and shimmer powder, all of which are excellent products with a luxurious feel. The Lip Stick: At $17, you might scoff and say, “That’s just too much to pay,” but I promise, when you slide the creamy, luscious stick across your lips, you’ll relent. Enriched with Vitamin E, known for its soothing and healing properties, this lipstick is a must have. It comes in four subtle colors, and like all Motoress Beauty Gear, is hypoallergenic, fragrance free, allergy tested and you don’t have to worry about it clogging your pores as it is noncomedogenic. The black Pinky’s Motorcycle PassionDec 2012

case is sleek and pretty and stays closed. The Lip Glaze: What I like about the glaze is that it’s not sticky, it has glitter and is very shiny. It also has a nice sheer feel with just a hint of coloring, and tastes good. I’m told it has a fruit berry extract. It comes with a sponge wand applicator and retails for $14. It comes in three subtle colors. The Lip Gloss: This product comes in 12 colors and is formulated to give you extreme shine. It is designed for women riders and it stays on for a long time. Also, with the fruit berry extract added, it is flavorful. I like the fun, motorcycle themed colors like Scootin, Twisty, Feisty, and Torque. Cost is $16. The bronze: This is my favorite. Motoress uses only the finest 18

pearl mineral powders to help create a light touch of glimmer! It can be applied to face or body or both. The easy applicator is compact enough to take along on trips, and secure enough to keep from getting broken. It comes in its own applicator tube with brush and powder pump in two shimmery colors. Cost is $38 but it’s long lasting, has a quality brush, and feels good--well worth the expense!

You know you are a woman biker when: You wave at a rider from your vehicle and they don’t wave back. Don’t they know you would rather be riding? You own one pair of boots (ha, right just one) that cost more than the other 20 pair of shoes in your closet combined. You go shopping and are excited that you found chrome nail polish. Your bikes have a place in the garage but the cars have to tough it outside. You own more than one set of gloves and sunglasses. Your face is tan except for the racoon eyes, and chin strap. Your arms are tan but your hands or white because you always wear gloves OR you have a Harley logo tanned on your hand because you gloves have a cut out. You have more tshirts with bikes or Harley logos than without. You search ebay or google for bike parts instead of household stuff. Your are folding your laundry and realize everything is black. You give a thumbs up to another woman rider. You take off your diamond rings because they hurt when you grip. You plan your vacation around a bike event.

Amy Irene White, author of the Wicked Bitch, and writer for this magazine, made the long trip from Hot Springs to Haughton for one reason - to help raise money for the National Lupus Foundation. The day before the trip, she wasn’t certain she would make it because her Lupus was flaring up. The problem with the disease is that you never know when you’ll have a bad day, and it can come upon you suddenly. Lupus is her nemesis, but she doesn’t let it get her down. Amy is a talented writer and is passionate about bringing Lupus awareness to the community and helping to fund research. Even though she wasn’t feeling well, she grabbed her high heels, threw a smile on her face, and greeted the crowd as only Amy can. Her bubbly personality and outspoken manner commanded attention, and her support of the event, combined with the IOMC Shreveport, and Pinky’s Passion, contributed to raising $1,765.00 for Lupus Awareness. The location, Camp Joy Marina on beautiful Lake Bistineau, was an appropriate venue for the event with plenty of parking, awesome lake views, friendly and courteous staff, and several vendors supporting the cause. The Doc Woody Band, against the cypress tree and lake background, provided musical entertainment while a poker run, vendors, face painting, food, and a bike show kept those in attendance busy. The good times continued throughout the night with a Halloween costume contest at Camp Joy and time well spent with good friends. Thank you to all those who took time out of their busy Saturday to stop by and support this cause, and to all those who donated their time and money. If you missed it, you can still donate by logging on to www.lupus.org.

Safe group riding in mountainess areas by Luke and Amy Stetson

Isn’t it fun to ride the twisty turns in various mountain areas with your friends? This feat is easily accomplished by following safe riding guidelines. Here are some tips: Group riding in the twisties is a real thrill but has different challenges from that of the flat lands. When group riding, in most cases, ride single file instead of the staggered configuration. If possible keep the closest rider in your line of sight. Have an agreed upon meeting point in case of trouble. Ride in the center of the lane in order to avoid deer and other wildlife which may come from either side of the road. Riding in the center also gives leeway if an oncoming vehicle crosses the center line into your lane. Don’t ride real close to the yellow center line; your handlebars should be inside your lane. Watch out for oilslicks in the center lane, however, Straining cars may overboard transmission fluid while going up steep grades and make a real mess. Pay close attention to posted speed limits in curves. When advisory signs are very slow speed (like 20 mph) they mean it. Also watch for warning arrows which are black on a yellow background and indicate curves ahead. Upon entering a curve, focus way ahead on the roadway. When leaning into an extremely tight curve, don’t look right down in front of you. If you scrape the roadway in a curve, don’t panic, and don’t straighten up the bike as this action could cause you to go off the road. Look out for tar snakes (these are snakey shaped repairs done on the road). If it has recently rained, they’re slippery; likewise if it’s very hot. If you travel across them in a curve,

you may think something is wrong with your steering as it may cause your bike to slip an inch or so out of your travel path. Watch for brake lights on the bike in front of you. However, if this rider is gearing down, then you won’t see brake lights so keep a reasonable distance. If you have a passenger, this person should be checking your rear view mirror for upcoming traffic, or for any obstacles in the road. Honk at bicyclists if they’re riding side by side to make them get over and ride single file. Lead riders should alert following riders that bicyclists are being overtaken. An overhead signal pointing to the right side of the road lets followers avoid bicyclists. If you have a passenger, this person can do the signal and the rider can keep hands on the handle bar. Don’t be fooling around with high tech equipment or gadgets when riding in the mountains. Focus and concentrate all your attention on riding. If you really insist on riding fast, then pre-ride your route by yourself so there are no surprises. Here are some items you might want to carry with you: a loud survival whistle, an ace bandage and emergency blanket, a compass, emergency contact list. Have fun and always ride safe and smart.

Ask Amy …. Tech Tips and Tricks Winterizing Your Motorcycle After all the rides have been ridden, the leaves have fallen, and there is a definite chill in the air, it’s time for many of us to put away our babies until spring. Here is a guide to help you ensure that your baby is in prime condition when spring first shows her pretty warm breezes. Give your bike a thorough cleaning. A gentle wash with detergent and water will be fine. Just make sure to get off all the funky stuff like road grime and bugs to protect the finish of the bike. Avoid spraying water directly into the opening of the muffler. If baffles get wet and are not dried prior to storage, it could cause rust on the inside. Likewise, avoid moisture in the air cleaner housing. If the housing becomes saturated, it could act as a choke, making cycle difficult to start. If you have an oiled air filter such as K&N, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for properly cleaning and oiling the filter. Make sure inside the housing is good and dry before you put it back together. Dry completely with a good chamois. Clean and polish all aluminum and stainless surfaces with the appropriate metal polish. Finally finish up with a coat of good wax polish on all painted and chrome surfaces.. I am fond of Nu Finish and Mothers products. Clean the chain (if you have one) or check your belt for wear or damage. Spray off all the built-up residues with WD40. Don’t forget to lube the chain. Of course it’s best to have a clean dry storage building or shop for your machine, but if that isn’t possible, there are still steps you can take to protect it from the elements. Never, ever cover it with a cheap plastic tarp. Not only will this hold moisture from the ground and cause rust, the movement of the wind can cause the surface to rub back and forth against your bike and ruin a paint job. It’s better to let it sit in open weather than to leave it covered in plastic if you can’t afford a real bike cover. If inclement weather forces you to cover it with a tarp, cover it first with quilts or soft blankets before you put the tarp on. Remove the tarp as soon as the bad weather is gone because the sunshine on the plastic will cause condensation. If your storage location is bare concrete, we suggest parking the bike on a piece of plywood, MDF, or old thick carpet. This will insulate the bike from becoming damp. We also suggest storing your bike with all the weight removed from the wheels. A bike stand or some blocking works if you have a wheeled lift. A center stand and some blocking will work too. Do not store your bike near any ozone emitting devices

such as motors, freezers, furnaces or electric heaters. The gasses created by the above will deteriorate rubber parts. Clean and treat all leather with a high quality dressing. With a clean cloth, wipe good quality light machine oil over all the metal surfaces, except the disc brakes, of course. Spray a little WD40 in the tail pipes. Cover your tail pipe opening and the air intake with plastic wrap and a rubber band. You can also cover drain hoses as well. This will prevent any critters from making a cozy winter home in your bike. Add a fuel stabilizer to the gas tank.. my favorites are Lucas products. Fill your tank with gas as full as it can go. This is very important. As fuel ages, more volatile components tend to change, leaving sludge and gummy substances that can affect the carburetor, gas lines, and fuel filter. Run the bike so the gas and fuel stabilizer get to the carburetor and fuel injectors… then turn off the fuel and run it dry. If you have a carburetor, don’t forget to drain your float bowls. Shut off the gas petcock and drain the gas from the carburetor bowls. Consult your manual for location of drain screws. Of course if you have a fuel-injected bike, there isn’t anything to drain. (IF you don’t know whether your bike is carburetted or fuel injected, you should probably be letting someone else do this step in the first place. Once the engine is warm, you can change the oil and filter. Oil chemistry changes over periods of extended storage, and could cause sludgy black build up in your engine components. Old oil can develop acidic qualities, which can corrode engine parts. Some people prefer to leave them in the dry over the winter, but I always add the clean oil before storage to keep everything well lubricated. You may want to remove the battery. Some batteries may require charging every four weeks with a “Battery Tender” type of charger. Built up sulfates on the plates can ruin a battery during cold storage and inactivity. A thin coat of Vaseline to the terminals on the battery can prevent corrosion. This small step will mean an easier spring start up and no extra cost of battery replacement. Never set your battery directly on a concrete floor as this will ruin it. Place a piece of thick cardboard or carpet underneath the battery. If your bike has a liquid cooling system, check the level of antifreeze with a hygrometer. Drain, flush and replace antifreeze if necessary. We suggest this replacement be done every two years. Do not leave the antifreeze level low or empty; this could lead to rust or corrosion of the cooling system. Check all other fluid levels at this time. Remove spark plug wires, and carefully remove the plugs with a spark plug wrench. Be sure to get some motor oil down in the cylinders--approximately one teaspoon of oil in each. Tuck the plug wires away somewhere safe so they do not arc, then spin the motor with the starter for a few revolutions to get the oil spread around. Remember to keep your face away from the spark plug holes. Oil will squirt out! Clean or install new plugs…don’t forget to gap them.. and put them back in. Replace plug wires. Put oil over the stationary tubes on the front forks. Get on the bike, hold the front brake and bounce the bike up and down to work the front suspension. This will keep the rubber seals from drying out and protect the exposed fork tubes. Lube your cables, suspension and pivot points, and the drive shaft too if you have one. Check the air cleaner and the fuel filter. Look at brake pads. Give your bike a good onceover. Resist the urge to start it and let it run for short periods of time as this can lead to condensation due to engine and combustion byproducts in the oil. By following all these steps, you can be sure that your motorcycle is ready to go as soon as you are… Take care of it, and it will take care of you. ~Amy Irene White 25

Pinky’s Motorcycle Passion Dec 2012

By this time of year, it’s cold in Michigan and most of the motorcycles have been put into storage. So, what’s a man or woman to do? Whitetail deer hunting is a fun and very challenging sport and can provide a diversion during the winter off-riding season. During the fall and early winter, when the days are shorter, the whitetail become more active. Glands cause the deer to enter breeding season called the rut. The males, called bucks, start chasing the females, does, and fighting each other for territories. They don’t want other bucks to have their does. Even brothers will lock horns and fight each other for the right to mate. The bucks use their hooves to scrape the surface of the ground. Glands between their hooves leave a scent . Overhead the bucks will rub their foreheads against overhanging branches, again transferring a scent. The bucks are communicating with other males as well as the females These areas are called scrapes. Whitetail deer are somewhat nocturnal, that’s why you see more deer in the early morning and just before dark. Of course they do move all day, just not as much. During the rut, the bucks can be caught off guard more easily than any other time of the year. They are not as concerned about running across humans as they are the rest of the year. They are more concerned about does or other bucks. The bucks can be seen walking through the woods with their noses in the dirt, sniffing for scents. The rutting season is no doubt, the best time to catch bucks off guard. Now, when hunting whitetail deer, there are a lot of variables and a lot can go wrong. Usually it is the equipment that fails so check your equipment every time before you go out. The cold, freezing temperatures or even wet weather can and will take a toll on your

equipment. When it comes to whitetail deer hunting, the chances are you are only going to get one shot, so practice, practice, practice with your bow, crossbow, or whatever weapon you are using. Where I live it is shotgun or muzzle loader only. Some people use buckshot but that is usually the ones that are hunting in really thick shrubs or the ones that don’t shoot very well. Buckshot is like ten shots in one but the wounds are a lot smaller and there is less blood for tracking. You will probably have to track your game unless your shot is within 10 or 15 yards or if you are really lucky. Snow does help a lot for tracking but if there is no snow, tracking is tough because there is a lot of red in the leaves on the ground. In order to cover your human scent, you’ll need to use a product to mask your odor. You’ll have to experiment to figure out which ones work best in your area: an apple scent for hunting in apple orchards or a pine scent for hunting in the pines. They make an earth scent too, but if you’re going to use that, you might as well just rub some dirt on yourself and your clothes. It’s free. Some people put animal scent or urine on their boots before they walk into the woods. Some examples are fox or raccoon, but there are several kinds. It’s not wise to use deer scent or deer urine on yourself though. Bucks in the rut have been known to attack humans with deer scent on them. Fake scrapes can work too. Use a stick to scrape the earth and pour a purchased doe scent on the spot and see if the bucks are attracted. If the deer do hit this scrape, you can hunt just off of it with good cover and a wind advantage. Obviously, make sure that you are downwind from the scrape so that the deer don’t get your scent. Just remember that whitetail deer are smart and fast.

Hunting is his hobby Pinky’s Motorcycle Passion Dec 2012

They are born and live in the woods and are totally familiar with their surroundings. They have runways in the woods that can be used for escape routes. If you shoot and miss, they are gone. That’s why you mustn’t miss. Some people hunt off these runways, especially if there are good signs like scrapes, rubs, or signs of a lot of traffic. Where two or more runways intersect is called a runway crossing and is a good spot. You can double or triple your odds of seeing deer or getting a shot at these crossings. Remember that you have to catch whitetail off guard and they are usually pretty aware and alert. Leaving your cigarettes in the car is a good idea, especially if you are not in a blind with lots of cover. Deer look for movement and can see movement from far away and every time that you take a drag, you are moving. They will likely see you and chances are that you will never see them. You must sit or stand still--completely still. This is hard to do sometimes and takes practice. Sometimes you can hunt deer on the edge of a field or meadow where it meets the woods. Deer are known to travel along power lines and fence rows too. Deer love tall grass, not only to eat but to bed down in. If there is a really thick area in the woods, you can hunt that edge too. Deer hide in these areas during season and you can have much success hunting these edges. The edge of a swamp or river can be good as well. Don’t forget to give yourself a wind advantage. There are natural tunnels in the woods too, as well as in the fields out in the open. These tunnels are a good place to get deer. Once again, set up downwind and make sure that you have good cover. Still hunting is also fun and can bring success, especially on a rainy day when it is too wet and cold to just sit. Still hunting

is walking very slowly through the woods watching for deer. Just take a couple of steps and stop and watch and listen. Then take a few more steps and stop, look and listen. When the leaves are soaked with rain, you can walk slowly making very little noise. The rain also helps to keep your scent down, so there are truly some advantages to still hunting, especially on rainy days and when there is snow on the ground. Just remember that when still hunting, time is not of the essence. You are alone with all of nature’s creatures and you can hunt any one of them if you have the proper license. Don’t forget that it is as much fun seeing the creatures and being in the great outdoors as it is getting the meat or the horns, so hit the woods and have lots of fun.

Customs and Courtesies This column will describe some of the customs and courtesies adhered to in the biker community. Please send your comments to letters to the editor at maric12@gmail.com GREMLIN BELL Have you noticed that some riders have a small bell hanging off their motorcycle frame or handlebars? Have you wondered what the purpose is? That little bell is more than decoration, it serves a very important purpose – it wards off gremlins, also known as evil road spirits. You see, there are motorcycle gremlins that LOVE to ride, but they are also mischievous little devils and they cause all sorts of problems for you while you are riding. Some say they are responsible for that old lady in the minivan not seeing you and cutting you off in traffic. Or, you may be having trouble shifting smoothly, your battery goes dead, your turn signal suddenly refuses to work, an oil spill appears out of nowhere, you hit a patch of black ice, etc – you get the idea. Those little gremlins look for trouble and try to steer your bike towards it. Now, once you get a bell on your scoot – it wards off these attacks from the little gremlins, not allowing any more to get onto your bike. If you already have some gremlins riding with you, they will get trapped in the hollow of the bell, and the constant ringing will drive them insane – causing them to lose their grip and fall to the roadway. Do you have the protection of a gremlin bell? If you buy a gremlin bell of your own, the power works. If you receive the gremlin bell as a gift – the powerful magic of the bell is doubled. Do you have a friend who does not have a gremlin bell yet? Why not be the person to give them one, they’ll thank you! The bell, and a good preventive maintenance program by the bike’s owner, will help eliminate the gremlins. To purchase an authentic gremlin bell, visit www.gremlinbells.com

NEWS SPEED LIMIT

85

Texas Highway now has 85 mph speed limit. The highest speed limit in America was officially unveiled in November, and drivers on one portion of a Texas highway are now allowed to reach 85 mph without keeping an eye out for police cars and speed cameras. The 85 mph limit will be enforced on 41 newly built miles of Texas 130, a toll road in the Austin area. A 19 mile stretch of Texas 130 is already 80 mph. This road is popular for those traveling to and from the Republic of Texas Motorcycle Rally held in June each year. Safety advocates are not thrilled with the change.

“The research is clear that when speed limits go up, fatalities go up,” Russ Rader, a spokesman for the nonprofit Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, tells the AP. The road’s designers and state officials maintain that the highway is designed for the new speeds. But others are noting that raising the limit isn’t just about personal freedom and horsepower — money also plays a role. “This is no small financial matter to the state,” wrote The Austin Statesman’s Ben Wear back in April, when the bill setting the limit was passed. “Its contract with a consortium led by Cintra, a Spanish toll road company... specifies that TxDOT would get an extra $67 million if the speed limit is 80 mph. Set the limit at 85 mph, and that premium rises to $100 million.” In a move that presents drivers with a stark choice, the Express reports, the speed limit on a highway that runs parallel to Texas 130 has been lowered, from 65 to 55 mph.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON the 110th Anniversary Badges

Likely to first catch your attention on each of the 2013 limited-edition 110TH Anniversary Edition motorcycles is the beautiful and distinctive commemorative fuel tank badge. Like a fingerprint, each badge – forged from solid bronze – is subtly unique, thanks to an innovative manufacturing process. “The inspiration for the logo was Willie’s desire to design ‘living art,’” explains Ray Drea, Harley-Davidson Vice President of Styling. “The distressed finish, or ‘living finish,’ was a concept Styling had wanted to use on a bike for many years; the 110TH Anniversary bikes seemed like the perfect place to tell that story.” After it is plated with black nickel, each badge is distressed, with buffed highlights and an antiqued patina in the recesses – similar to what you would see in a bronze statue. Once just the right look and finish are created, each badge is sealed with a clear coat to prevent oxidation and maintain consistency during mass production. A bright gold-tone Bar & Shield cloisonné is then inserted into the main body of the “single wing” badge. The result is a highly distinctive design that gives each bike a one-of-a-kind “modern vintage” look that perfectly complements the Anniversary Vintage Bronze/Anniversary Vintage Black paint scheme – and boldly celebrates the 110-year Harley-Davidson legacy.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON the 110th Anniversary Restyled Street Bob

If the fuel tank badge weren’t the first feature of the 110th anniversary edition Harley-Davidson models that caught your eye, it would likely be the significant changes to the Street Bob. Noteable in this design is that the ignition switch has been relocated from the steering head to the tank console. Other changes include a blacked out powertrain and triple clamps, a chopped rear fender with side-mounted license plate and new stop, turn and tail lights. Tapered mufflers, a round air cleaner and new paint options are also features. Options include mid or foward controls with peg relocations, ABS and security systems, cast or laced wheels and a 103 engine. The paint option also includes the new hard candy design with eight layers of paint and a clear coat.

Belief behind the bar Rev. Tony Nations

I write this article the morning after the Presidential Election. I must admit that I was surprised by the outcome. I wouldn’t begin to stereotype bikers in general, as belonging to one political party/ philosophy or another. I’m sure there is quite a range of opinions about the candidates who were running, and the platforms that they were attempting to advance. Whoever you voted for, and whatever cause was closest to your heart, the details are as much as moot now. The President has won re-election.

Pinky’s Motorcycle Passion Dec 2012

That is a fact. However, it is still the truth that there is a God in heaven, who dearly loves his children, which includes all of us. Along with the love he gives us, he also gives us free will. Did the majority of the population vote against his will for the United States? I’ll let you readers be the judge and debater of that question. I just hope the conciliatory tone Mr. Obama used in his acceptance speech wasn’t all rhetoric and sound bites. The next four years can be more of the same, which in my opinion, would be disastrous. Or the next four can be an opportunity for bipartisan cooperation toward achieving greater prosperity for all Americans. I hope and pray the latter is the case. Whatever your views, I challenge you to pray for our great country; that God will bless our devotion to him, whether it be individually or as a nation. No doubt this election will be bantered about till probably the next one and beyond. Just remember, as I have already alluded to here—the facts may change, but the truth never does.

I met Bree’s sister on Halloween night when she stopped by with her little girl to trick or treat. Of course, it was a treat. She and her husband are Harley Riders and they live in our subdivision. I spoke to her for several minutes to and learned of her sister’s death at the wheel. Unfortunately, Bree was texting when she met her final destiny head on at the grill of an 18 wheeler. Bree’s family lost a beautiful 31 year old young lady and her two daughters lost a mother, all because of a text that just couldn’t wait. I can’t imagine how I would deal with the loss of a child, but I have to give credit to Bree’s family for their method of grieving. To help them get through this terrible ordeal, they are helping to save the lives of others by running a Facebook page, “Promise Me and Bree, Please Don’t Text and Drive”, and a web page www.thebreepromise. com. The pages get the information out, and remind us all

of the tragedies that can be caused by inattentive driving and especially when one is texting while driving. I believe this family was brought to my doorstep to give me the opportunity to assist in getting this message out to the public and provide yet another outlet to make you think before you pick up that phone and send a text. All we ask is that you pull over and make the text if it’s that important, or wait until you arrive at your destination. It’s really not that difficult. Some of us actually remember when we didn’t have cell phones, and it wasn’t even a choice we could make. The text can wait, and that’s the message. Log on to Bree’s Facebook page and make the promise. You can also buy merchandise like bracelets to remind you of your promise and to use as a tool to tell others about the promise. Don’t let Bree’s death be for naught. Sign up today, and make the Bree Promise, Don’t Text and Drive!

The Bree Promise is here to raise awareness of the potential hazards of texting and driving. Why would you ever put yourself or others in a dangerous situation? Texting and driving is illegal in many states; however, people continue texting and driving. Family and friends of Bree have come together to create this page in hopes of preventing another family from losing a loved one due to texting and driving. Bree’s family hopes that once you read their message you will pass this website on to your friends and family as a reminder of the potential consequences of texting and driving, or any other driving distractions.

A message from Bree’s father: “Sabrina Marie Wilson, 31. Bree Wilson is what most of her friends knew her by. I was awakened at 1:30 a.m. on Friday, June 22, 2012 by the coroner. The coroner asked, "Are you Dennis Wilson, the father of Sabrina Wilson?” My mind went numb as he was telling me about a fatal accident nine miles outside of Douglas, Wyoming on Hwy 59. The coroner explained that it was a Head-on collision with a semi truck. All the things that passed through my mind, the disbelief and non acceptance, how could this be true, what about her kids? She's my baby, how can I go on? I didn't sleep for days. Just catnaps and I’d wake up crying. This was by far the hardest thing I've ever done. All the prayers I received gave me the strength to carry on. The Wyoming Highway Patrol report says she was texting around the time of the accident. That hurt me even more. This was not one of those "Live and Learn" things. So I say to you my friends and family, let's not have to do this again. Pull over or wait until you get where you're going to send a text. Please DONT text and drive, and for those of you who do, I want to tell you, "I love you,” one last time. I didn't get to tell Bree I loved her that day. Think, and please don't put any of your loved ones through what I just went through. It's way too hard. I love you all. Thanks for everything you did for us. Dennis Wilson, The father of Bree”

Sabrina ‘’Bree’’ Wilson, 31 years old, was taken from her family on June 21, 2012. Bree was texting and driving when she slammed head on with a semi. Bree was pronounced dead at the scene. The semi driver suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment. However, this man now has to live with the fact a young woman was killed by an unfortunate event that could have been avoided. Bree not only left her family and friends behind but she also left behind her two little girls ages 7 and 10.

Well, here we are at the end of October, and my article for the December edition was supposed to be about our vacation, but instead I am writing about the Trip That We Didn’t Take. We started our vacation with the Run with the Nuns, an annual Shreveport, Louisiana, children’s fundraiser sponsored by Christus Schumpert Hospital. It was a wonderful day to see old friends and meet new ones. The chilly ride to the Red River District was brisk and exhilarating. The food was the usual fare but we really appreciated the good hot coffee. After the run, we had planned to leave on our trip, but we decided not to go. Instead of traveling down the highway to a leisurely fun-filled week, we rode home to a long list of chores. The only riding I got to do was to breakfast and dinner on our anniversary. And now it’s raining so “boo” to a long week. The rain does bring to mind another ride Jim and I did some while back. It was late spring and even though the weatherman predicted rain, it looked clear to the south of Interstate 20. We went south and darn if the rain didn’t catch up with us. No matter which way we went, the rain followed. It was a fun ride though because we went down some unknown roads and hid from the rain under interesting old buildings. We were wet and we laughed and acted silly all afternoon. I felt like a kid again and, if possible, it made me love my sweetie even more. I learned from that to always take extra gloves, rain gear, and socks in my side of the bike, because that would not be the last time we got caught in the rain.

Northwest Louisiana Scenic Biway Hwy 2 88 miles, 2 hours

A paradise of rich history, tradition and beauty, Louisiana Highway 2 in Northwest Louisiana, and a network of other nearby scenic trails, reflect “the other side” of Louisiana and its lesser-known cultural aspects. It’s about peas and cornbread, fried okra, and fresh corn on the cob. It’s berry picking on a bright sunny morning or a lazy afternoon of catfishing on a Cypress tree-studded lake, pond or river. It’s rolling hills and pine trees, oil and cotton, Saturday festivals and Sunday night “sing alongs” at the local church. You’ll find a place where life still moves at a slower pace, where folks still wave, and where the area’s own colorful history is celebrated at seemingly every turn in museums that are dotted across the rolling hills on and around Louisiana Highway 2. They celebrate everything from agriculture to outlaws and from the oil industry to famous faces with local roots. Plain Dealing - This town was named after the plantation of a prominent early settler of North Bossier Parish who bought land in the area in 1839. Sarepta - This quiet community is home to country music star, Trace Atkins. Shongaloo - The name is an Indian term meaning cypress tree or running water. Besides the Log Cabin Museum in Shongaloo, points of interest include the nearby Old Salem Church and Cemetery, which was built by slaves in 1863. Two miles north of town is an old Indian Campground on Indian Creek. Homer - One of the oldest public buildings in continuous use in the The Shongaloo Museum is a log cabin structure state, the Claiborne Parish Courthouse is a central stopping point for behind the Civic Center. The antebellum courthouse, a classic example of Greek Revival architecture, is the anchor of the town’s famous and historic courthouse square just to the south of Highway 2 following Highway 9. Take a trip through time at the Ford Museum in the historic Hotel Claiborne which faces the courthouse on the courthouse square in Homer. are nearby. The 6400 acre lake which offers swimming, camping, fishing, skiing and other water and outdoor recreation, is eight miles east of Homer off Highway 146. While in Homer, visit Valhalla Motorcycle Campground and Bar. Lisbon - The Rocky Springs Baptist Church in Lisbon is the birthplace of the Baptist Chronicle, the forerunner of the Baptist Message. The church was organized in 1845. Lisbon is on Scenic Byway 2 between Homer and Bernice. The Lisbon Cemetery is right next door to the Baptist Church. Highway 2 Connections - These short side trips easily reached along Highway 2 are worth the trip: Oil City - South of Vivian on Hwy 1 - deeply rooted in the oil industry (go figure), thus the name. Visitors will want to check

The museum chronicles the growth of Oil City with exhibits featuring the Caddo Indians and a variety of early oil field equipment. The museum was formed in 1969 by a group of citizens dedicated to preserving the historical importance of the area as the site of the 1911 “Ferry No. 1” well, one of the world’s first over-water discovery wells. Artifacts include a wooden flow line pipe, an electric motor patented in 1899, a steamdriven fluid pump, pipe tongs and other equipment. There is also a large collection of early boom town and gusher photographs. Another part of the museum, the Caddo Indian Room, features

Welcome to Oil City, Atrribution: Steve Snodgras Caddo Indian relics and arrowheads dating back 10,000 years. And, be sure to visit the oil derrick and historic boom town buildings just outside the museum. Munn Hill - On scenic Byway 2 between Sarepta and Shongaloo, catch a unique snapshot of history on a farm that includes tenant houses. Muscadine time - Pick your fill of muscadine grapes at Jack Martin’s winery. This rare find is at his home near Rodessa off Highway 1 north of Vivian (318-223-4545) Hot off the grill - People drive for miles for the steaks and ribs at Moon’s Grocery and Deli on Scenic Louisiana Hwy 9 north of Highway 2 from Homer (318) 927-3687. It’s a self proclaimed hole in the wall cafe. It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but at Moon’s they cut their own steaks. You buy a bottle of booze, mixers, whatever, and serve yourself. No tables for two or candles! There’s Moon Pies, Swiss Rolls and Zebra Cakes on the dessert menu. Some delicacies include pickled eggs, pickled pigs’ lips, pork hocks, pigs’ feet, dill pickles, and jalapeño peppers.

Sunny Daze

This is part VI of the continuing story of Sunny Daze and her motorcycle adventures. Read previous insallments of Sunny Daze at www.pinkysmotorcyclepassion.com

Fiction by Mary Baker

All characters appearing in this work are fictitious. Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.

Moose was Charlie’s brother and best friend, and although it had been 10 years since Diedre had wielded the gun and ruthlessly pulled the trigger, Moose had not forgotten and he would have his revenge. Not only had the useless bitch killed his brother, but she had his baby and is allowing the boy to be raised by a cop and a black woman. Sure Charlie, Jr. was staying with the rich, prominent family, the Bransons, but it was apparent that the black woman, Tomeka, was raising him, and her with a white man, a cop no less. “If she thinks she’s going to get out of jail and take the boy and live a life of leisure like nothing ever happened, she’s got another think a coming.” As President of the Hell’s Prospects Motorcycle Club, (HPMC), Moose was well known both to law enforcement and to his adversaries. He had a long rap sheet that included drug possession, racketeering, kidnapping, and attempted murder. Fortunately for him, but not so much for the law enforcement community, his rap sheet also shows a lot of dismissals, probation, and county jail times. He was once tried under RICO but released on a technicality. RICO stands for Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act that is a United States Federal Law that provides for extended criminal penalties and focuses on racketeering. It provides for leaders of an organization to be tried for crimes which they ordered others to do or assisted them in, and closes a perceived loophole that allowed someone who had told someone else to, for instance, commit murder, to be exempt from the trial because he did not actually do it. RICO was enacted in October, 1970, and was just about the only thing Moose was afraid of. It was now 1995, and RICO cases were common. Because of RICO, Moose had to be very careful in how he handled his revenge, but he would find a way. In fact, he had a plan, a plan that would not involve the club. No, Moose was going to take care of Deidre himself. The club wanted to be involved, because Charlie had been a member of the HPMC, Nashville Chapter, and they felt it their duty, but Moose had spoken, and they would let him handle it. ___________________________ Ringo fanned his fingers through his long blonde hair, rubbed his tired eyes, and leaned back in his chair. The events of the last week were catching up to him: the accident, the funeral, the beating of the Vicksburg chapter, and Sunny. “What the hell was he thinking, sleeping with a 17 year old?” “What the hell?” He had been reading the secret Rebel Horsemen Motorcycle Club, (RHMC), forum and sorting through emails for the last hour hoping to hear from the Congressman. Time was running out and Fatboy would soon be well enough to be transferred to the jail. Then it would be difficult to get him out. He was so tired. Resigned, he sighed, and reached forward to close the lid on the lap top in front of him. As the lid went down, he heard the “beep” of an incoming email and thought, “Damn, it’s never ending, is it?” Ringo picked up his glass and swigged the last of his whiskey on the rocks. “It could be Jameson. Just one more, and then I’m done.” He opened the lid and looked at the “From” box of the new email. It was him. His curiousity got the best of him. Maybe the Congressman had some good news. He sure could use that about now. He read the email: “Be prepared for what you are about to read. You will want to be alone. Anne, darling, I have enjoyed our time together. You are a sweet flower who brought beauty to my messed up life. Don’t grieve over me, darling. I am but a passing distraction to you. You have a good Christian man who I could never light a candle to. Go to him. Make things right. I’m sorry for any pain I may have caused you, Dear.” Ringo glanced up at the “cc to” block and noted that the email was copied to both Anne and the Judge. He Pinky’s Motorcycle Passion Dec 2012

Sunny Daze continued reading. “Ringo, you’ve got what you want. The attached video will give you the fuel necessary to light the fire under the Judge’s ass and get him to do whatever you want. All I ask, Ringo, is that when you get Fatboy released, you take care of that sorry assed judge. Don’t let my death be in vain.” “Judge Warner, you read that right. You don’t even need to watch the video. Trust me, it incriminates you. You need to run; run as fast as you can. But, no matter how fast you run, know that you will be hunted down. The Rebels will find you. You’re a dead man; just as dead as I am. I’ll see you in hell, and soon, no doubt.” Ringo sat up straight. He took in all the information, and the thoughts ran through his head. “Poor Sunny, her mom’s secret is out,” he thought. He was sure Sunny didn’t know about Anne and the Congressman. He was keeping the photos that the prospects had taken the other day to himself. He intended to use them only if and when necessary. He couldn’t protect her from this now. Or could he? Since the email was just sent, maybe the police didn’t know yet. Maybe he could get to the laptop and delete it. “What was it that incriminates the Judge?” He was pleased to know that whatever it was, it would surely be enough to get Fatboy out. He clicked on the attachment and the media player opened. The still picture was enough to make him sick. He saw the Judge standing naked before a little boy. As his stomach turned, he pushed play. The video replayed a scene that Ringo wished he could erase. No matter how much this video helped his cause, he wished he could undo the events taking place before his eyes. He had seen enough. Before he even finished watching the clip, he slammed the laptop shut, silencing the video. Ringo picked up his cell phone and called Nosey, “Dude, I need you over here now.” “On my way,” came the answer.

Anne lay spread across the bed with her television watching her sleep, and her laptop on the bed right where she had left it when she had drifted off. The bottle of Bacardi was on the Queen Anne table beside her with her glass of melted ice leaving yet another ring on the hardwood finish. The ding of a new email woke her. She opened her eyes and looked at the computer. Maybe it was her lover, the Congressman. Maybe he wanted a rendezvous. She smiled and opened the lid. She looked at the “From” box of the new email and saw that it was indeed from him. When she opened the email and looked at the other recipients, she paused. “Why would he copy the Judge and Ringo, President of the Rebel Horsemen?” she wondered. She noticed the attachment titled “The Judge and his

3214 Barksdale Blvd Bossier City, LA 318-549-0119 Boy,” and wondered what the title meant to her. Was it sent to her in error? She shrugged and then began to read the email. The warmth drained from her body as a chill came over her. Her hands flew to her mouth 51

Sunny Daze Smitty. It’s my little nephew. How could he do this?” Smitty turned to his wife and took her in his arms and soothed her as she cried. The Judge was at a social event when the email was sent. He wouldn’t have an opportunity to watch it alone. He wouldn’t have an opportunity to run. Ringo and Nosey gassed up at the Walmart pumps. Then they went inside for some items: duct tape, a couple of steaks, a lighter, some charcoal, and some lighter fluid. They placed the items in the saddlebags and strapped the charcoal to the passenger seat using bungee cords. First they would take a ride to the clubhouse and give instructions to the prospects. The prospect’s job would be to break into the Congressman’s house and get the laptop. Then they would drag the body outside by the grill and start a fire. While the steaks are cooking their instructions are to soak the siding with lighter fluid and burn the Congressman’s house down making it look like a grilling accident. And, they had to get in and out of there without being seen. It wouldn’t hold up to close scrutiny, but initially, first responders would assume they’re dealing with an accident scene. Only upon further investigation and the autopsy report, would they realize they were dealing with a crime scene. It would give the club time to incriminate the Judge in the death of the Congressman.

to cover her scream. “No, it can’t be.” She read the entire email and read it again, and again, and yet again. Through tears she tried to make sense of it. And then she remembered the attachment, “the Judge’s Boy”. She clicked on the link and just like at Ringo’s place, the video player opened with a snapshot of the Judge naked, standing before a little boy. Upon closer inspection of the grainy film, she realized that it was her nephew, Mike. She pushed play and as she watched, horror filled her soul and she screamed loudly and sobbed uncontrollably. Smitty heard her screams from downstairs and ran to her. He flung the door open and shouted, “What is it, Anne, what is it?” She turned the laptop screen towards him and said, “Just watch, just watch,

Sunny Daze Ringo and Nosey left the clubhouse and went to pay the judge a visit. They drove in a cage to keep from alerting neighbors of motorcycles in the area. Earlier, Ringo had made some phone calls and was certain of the Judge’s location at the social event, and knew when to expect him home. He had indicated to their source that he would be making it an early evening since he had court to attend in the morning. He had even bragged about the worthless low lives whom he would ruin for good by putting them behind bars for a very long time, their source relayed. Ringo and Nosey would enjoy getting even with the Judge.

I like. It’s been so long since I’ve had any time to myself, you know. You are a Godsend, Sir. Thank you very much.” And, she bowed. “If she only knew”, he thought. When the Judge pulled up into the driveway, Ringo and Nosey were already inside. They sat comfortably on the sofa and waited for him to flick on the light. Soon, they heard the key turn in the lock, and they pointed their weapons directly at the door. As expected, the light came on, and they were shocked to see him standing there with the little boy. “Close the door,” said Ringo to the Judge. To the boy he said, “It’s o.k. Mike, come over here. I promise we won’t hurt you, and neither will the Judge any more. We know what he’s done to you, and we won’t let it happen again.” The boy walked toward Ringo’s outstretched hand as he placed the gun on the coffee table and coaxed Mike. Nosey kept cover on the Judge, and Ringo said, “I said close the door!” The judge followed his orders and replied, “Now there, there’s no need for guns. What is it you want? I’m certain I can help. You want bail for your man, John Richards, right? I can make that happen.” “Shut up,” said Ringo. “Take him in the bedroom, Nosey. Tie him up. Make sure he’s gagged and I’ll take care of the boy.” Mike was crying, the tears rolling down his cheeks as Ringo led him to the kitchen. “Sit down here, Mike. Do you want some water?” Before he could answer Ringo was filling a glass for the little boy. “Here you are now. Just let me make a phone call and I’ll get you back to your Mom, o.k.?” Mike nodded and sipped on his water, never taking his eyes from Ringo as he continued to sob.

The Judge shook hands with the Governor of Louisiana and the Mayors of Shreveport and Bossier City. He crossed paths with Sandra Bullock and Tom Cruise who were both in the area filming their new movie, The Pathfinders, to be released next year in 2014. He smiled and made small talk with millionaires and every influential person from miles around. He talked politics and noted how the country has suffered under the Democrats for the past five years. He promised his support to Governor Jindal when he runs for President of the United States in 2016. The Judge made sure he had seen and been seen, but it had been a long week and he needed to prepare for court in the morning. He was going to stop by and see Mike first, though. Mike lost his father to cancer two years ago and was being raised by his mother, Joan, Anne’s sister. Joan worked as a court recorder, and had logged many cases for Judge Warner. She flirted with him relentlessly and even invited him to her house on several occasions. That’s how the Judge met Mike, gained Joan’s trust and began to mentor the boy. At first, he took the boy to ball games, the State Fair, and the movies. They always stopped for pizza, hamburgers or ice cream. Then one day, he took the boy to a hotel room and molested him. He told the boy that if he told anyone, his mom would lose her job and he would have to hurt Aunt Anne. The boy was only 12 and believed him, of course.

In the bedroom, Nosey quickly secured the Judge to the chair. “You’re going to regret you ever lived when we get done with you. We’ve got a wood chipper planned for your future, or maybe a concrete grave. Or, maybe alligator bait would be a suitable demise. No, you’re too nasty for a gator”. And, he laughed heartily.

The Judge had told Joan that he was going to pick up the boy and take him to a movie. Since it would be late he told her, “Why don’t I just keep him overnight and drop him off at school in the morning on the way into work?” She said, “You’d do that for me? That would give me a chance to relax and enjoy the night alone for a change. I could catch up on some reading, do some cleaning, and even run around the house naked,” she winked, “if
