A strong democracy will have a platform for people to meet, deliberate and let their opinions be heard. A Public Space can make democracy possible. Unfortunately, it does not ‘allow’ democracy. PUBLIC SPACES ARE NOT DEMOCRATIC

There is restriction of usage by uncomfortable furniture . Exclusion of public by non-involvement in processes of planning and decision making. Open spaces which are for the public are disregarded by being designed for cars not for people. there is a prise tag for freedom of expression. Billboards endorsing consumerism rule our visual landscape.

PUBLIC SPACES HAVE BECOME ECONOMIC ENTITIES. Architecture is that manifestation of the current ideologies, which will stay even after the ideologies and people perish. Globalisation is making cities identical without a trace of culture in the context.

CITIZENSHIP IN PUBLIC SPACES SHWETA MANIKSHETTI Public Space can be defined as a ‘space of ideology’ and a ‘space of human artefacts’ in a common shared world, where individuals can disclose their identities and establish relations of reciprocity and solidarity. The project Citizenship in Public Spaces, is a humble attempt to find ways in which architects and non architects can work responsibly work towards reaffirming citizenship by engaging in common action and collective deliberation.
