01 PROJECTION Adaptative reuse of historical prison facility in the city of Hsinchu in Taiwan. #Dark Heritages Reuse #Culture Studies #Panopticism #Immersive Experience The Institute of Architecture at National Chiao Tung University and School of Architecture of the Chinese University of Hong Kong jointly conducted planning and design research on space reuse for the ‘Hsinchu Juvenile Prison Service Official Quarters’. The complex spatial context and related topics for the project include the restoration and reuse of historical buildings, urban renewal and community building. The planning and design tasks are to preserve a specific state of space and time and redistribute the economic value of urban land. At the same time, there must be placemaking that connects the culture and identity of the community. Teachers and students discussed back and forth what was the content of the historical buildings, who was the main object of space creation and what value and feedback could be created by the reuse of space.

What time is this place?
To preserve life experiences of different layers of time in one historical site.
Context: Life in A Place of Being Watched
Reuse: An Environmental Theatre with No Boundaries
Dormitory buildings were designed on the basis of governmental specifications. Space, volume, materials and even location have their own rules. Across the road are the prison wall and observation tower. Through discussion of the hidden power of space and tracing old stories, we developed new perspectives to examine the site.
Environmental theatre aims to heighten audience awareness of theatre by eliminating the distinction between audience and actor space. To preserve specific memories of space, some parts of the buildings are repaired while others are removed. The rebuilt site is then open to performers to represent and create new stories.
Same Environment, Different Projections
To represent the environment from a men's point of view.
To represent the environment from a women's point of view.
To represent the environment from a children's point of view.
Concept: To Preserve The Stories of Living TThe concept is to highlight and represent individuality and diversity in the spatial experience. By drawing a new layer onto the same image of the site, a projection of spatial experience is represented. These are the men, officers of the prison and women, their spouses and main keepers of families and their children. From this practice, it can be seen realised that the watchtower is the most symbolic object, sitting in the background of a unique site.
The original photo of the site.
Operation: To Create a Fluent Context with Symbolic Objects The design operation includes preserving the iconic structure of the dormitories such as walls, fences, columns and floors. It also involves adding new architectural elements to redefine the theatre space, making different types of space that are capable of being used as stages, maintaining smooth circulation when shows are on.

02 HYPERTEXT A library building provides complex functions in a digital era. #Complex Program #Function Assambly #Site Planning A design course in the fourth semester aims to train students to integrate complex architectural functions, while thinking about revolutionary changes that libraries, as important public buildings, face in the digital age. The design work must meet the basic functions of the library, including reading areas, shelving, conference rooms, offices and classrooms and reach a certain amount of area. Depending on the design concept, new functions and areas can be added to the library. The site is at the centre of the campus of Shih Chien University in Taipei, surrounded by many other departments. The existing library is also within the scope of operation. According to the design concept, the original library can either be removed or combined as an addition. The proposal must also consider the surrounding environment of the site, campus circulation and landscape presentation.

The Linking Paths in Between In the digital era, people learn knowledge from hyperlinks which breaks the boundaries of traditional categorisation. To face that and maintain the importance of conserving knowledge, a library needs to respond to its time and provide new possibilities for providing knowledge to users. Through this design, users are encouraged to develop personal routes to absorb knowledge and create news network. Relationships between disciplines are deconstructed and reconstructed all time.
03 ROOM OF GAZE A dressing room of one’s own.
#Representation #Beginner Project #Ergonomics As the first design practice, each student should design a unique small room for themself within the space of 240*240*240 cm. Students are free to decide the function. The purpose of this practice is to get familiar with the dimensions of the human body and common objects in daily life. Students had to analyse the relationship between chosen activities and space and use basic architectural elements for this project. When writing the thesis ‘Projective Symbol: The Construction of Spatial Authenticity’ in 2017, I found the project perfectly represented the existence of gaze in our environment. To develop the concept, representation of the drawings has been optimised.

Is our everyday life a performance?
A House of Two Sides.
#Housing Practice #Public and Private #Urban Lifestyle For the second design project, with housing as the topic students need to design a home for themselves utilising the unique sequences of daily life. This exercise allows students to explore what a living space is, learning to organise functions in a vertical dimension and simple façade design. Shophouses are long and narrow and commonly seen in Taiwan. Only the front and rear facades are adjacent to the street. Therefore, the design of street houses usually focuses on creating diverse forms of space in the interior.

05 ZZSH FACADE RENOVATION A creative facade renewal of a school building in Taipei, Taiwan. #Public Work #Shading System #School Building Renewal School building renovations are common but challenging public projects in Taiwan. Many campuses were built after World War II. After years of use, they have gradually entered the stage of renewal. Architects often need to implement innovative design solutions under the circumstances of financial constraints and short construction periods. In ZZSH High School, the classroom doors and windows needed to be replaced. The school also hopes to solve the problem of sun exposure altogether with limited funds. The team of ARMU d+a made an unreasonable decision, which was to manufacture a specialshaped sun shading system on the facade. The project had gone through a 4-month planning phase and 2-month construction during the summer vacation. Teachers and students were excited to see the brand-new school appearance when they returned and gave high praise.

Building Section
In order to complete the giant and curved shading system, the design team used digital and actual models to review the plan. Also with frequent inspections and supervision on-site to realize the project. The installation details and the weather resistance of the shading system were considered carefully.

06 1 HOUSE FOR ALL A sustainable housing prototype to fill the gaps in cities #Urban Renewal Solution #Reversible Construction #Demonstration Unit The Solar Decathlon Europe 21/22 (SDE 21/22) is the university competition for sustainable building and living in cities. Team TDIS (NCT), as one of the 18 university teams from eleven countries, is developing an innovative housing prototype ‘1 House for All,’ for bringing a sustainable, energy-efficient, and socially responsible future. The prototype is transferred into a demonstration unit and will be built in Wuppertal, Germany this summer. The unit needs to be built on-site in 14 days and will stay in the solar campus for 3-5 years as a part of the Living Lab Project.

The House Demonstration Unit (HDU) Solar panels
From building design to HDU, the geometry is adapted according to the geo-location of Wuppertal. The circulation is re-organized to meet the need for public visits but keeps the sequence from outdoor to indoor, including a community space, a healthy entrance, a living space, a bedroom, and a workspace.
