Introduction

The SIAST Nursing Division celebrated remarkable achievements in 2013-14 and contributed significantly to the advancement of SIAST’s vision and strategic directions. We successfully launched SIAST’s inaugural degree program, the Bachelor of Psychiatric Nursing (BPN) Degree Completion program. The BPN program is not only the first degree program for SIAST, it is also the first psychiatric nursing degree program in Saskatchewan. We completed the initial development of the Saskatchewan Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing (SCBScN) program, in partnership with the University of Regina. With the implementation of the accelerated option, we delivered all four years of the program. SIAST and the University of Regina established a distributed education site in Swift Current for the delivery of the SCBScN program with a cohort of eight students, in collaboration with Great Plains College and Cypress Health Region. We collaborated with the University of Regina for the development of the Collaborative Nurse Practitioner Program (CNPP) leading to a Master of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner) credential and prepared for the launch of the program in September 2014. This type of collaborative nurse practitioner program is the first of its kind in Canada. We celebrated the first graduates of our new Critical Care Nursing program, which was offered in North Battleford and Prince Albert. The distance-based program, developed with extensive consultation with nurses and managers from the health regions, will establish standard education for registered nurses working in ICUs across Saskatchewan. The Perioperative Nursing program capacity was expanded for a total of 46 seats to meet the growing demand for perioperative nurses in Saskatchewan. As well, the Orientation to Nursing in Canada for Internationally Educated Nurses program celebrated with their 41 graduates, its largest group of graduates to date. We established two Nursing Division Leadership Team awards to celebrate the leadership and academic excellence of our students. The recipients were Alixe Dick, second year SCBScN student and Devon Stelwagen, second year Practical Nursing student. Left: Award recipient Alixe Dick
