Jared
Mathieson
Jared Mathieson definitely had his eyes on a career when he enrolled in SIAST’s Instrumentation Engineering Technology program. “There was a wide range of career paths you could follow with the program: mechanic, programmer, sales.” He had checked out various post-secondary institutions before settling on SIAST. “It offered the only program of its kind in Saskatchewan. And it was a three-year co-op education program, so I had actual experience in the field when I graduated.”
6
Career starter.
But it wasn’t just SIAST’s career focus that appealed to Jared. “I liked having small classes in a small community. The family atmosphere was one of the best things about the program; that and the hands-on labs.” The co-op work terms alternated with academic terms. This gave Jared a chance to earn a paycheque while learning his trade. By the end of the program, he was well on his way to achieving technologist and journeyman status. Jared pursued both, and is now an Engineering Technologist and journeyman Industrial Instrumentation Mechanic. Can you say career mobility?
Some of these measures include: • arranging testing accommodations • assisting with tutorials and note taking • coordinating access to programs • coordinating technical aids • pre-testing • program planning • providing culturally sensitive counselling • providing pre-admission consultations
Education Equity
Counsellors at each campus are ready to offer guidance related to the services and provisions available. Talk to us if you are a member of one of the designated equity groups: • people of Aboriginal ancestry • women interested in trades and technology • people with permanent disabilities • members of visible minority groups

SIAST is committed to developing a student body that represents every segment of Saskatchewan’s population – our Education Equity Program provides a framework to achieve our education equity goals. We take measures to identify, eliminate and/or reduce systemic practices that may create discriminatory barriers for members of designated groups.

How to Apply WHEN SHOULD I APPLY? You can apply as soon as you are enrolled in the courses and at the grade level you require for admission. For instance, for a program where grade 12 is an admission requirement, you may apply in September of your grade 12 year. Refer to SIAST’s website under “Admission & Registration” for details: www.goSIAST.com/admissions.
Answer: SIAST has more than 150 programs to choose from, ranging from Practical Nursing to Professional Cooking.
Note: The application period for high-demand programs for the following academic year is October 1 to February 15.
HOW DO I APPLY? You can apply online, in person or by mail. Apply online at www.goSIAST.com, print a copy of the application form from the website or obtain a paper copy of the application form from any SIAST campus. Complete the application form and submit it with the required $50 non-refundable application fee. Applicants who apply online must be prepared to pay the application fee by Visa or MasterCard. You may apply for more than one program, but you must submit a separate application form and pay the application fee for each program or program site you apply to. One of the measures we take to increase opportunities for the designated groups in our Education Equity Program is to reserve a percentage of program seats for applicants from the designated groups. If one (or more) of the designated groups (see page 7) applies to you, please check off the appropriate item(s) on your Application for Admission form.
WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO DO? Along with your completed application form and $50 application fee, you will need to include: • an official transcript of your high-school marks. If you have already completed the high-school requirements for admission, arrange for an official transcript to be forwarded electronically to us by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education or from the appropriate provincial ministry of education if your requirements were completed outside of Saskatchewan; OR
8
• a preliminary statement of high-school standing. If you are currently completing high-school requirements for admission, a conditional admission can be granted based on preliminary results. Upon completion of the requirements, you must arrange for a final official transcript to be sent electronically by the appropriate provincial ministry of education. Final official transcripts are required by August 1. • all other forms required by the program. High-demand programs have additional selection criteria on top of regular academic admission requirements. All admission requirements are detailed on our program Web pages on www.goSIAST.com.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? After you are accepted into your program, you will receive an acceptance letter from SIAST letting you know your start date, tuition fees and other costs (such as books, supplies and student fees). If you are a sponsored student, your sponsoring agency will need to provide us with written confirmation of your sponsorship. In your acceptance letter, we will ask you to pay a $300 tuition deposit within 30 days to hold your spot in the program, so plan that cost into your budget when you apply. If you are not offered a seat in the program to which you apply, you will be required to reapply to the next year’s intake. Please visit our website for additional details.
plan. If you do not meet admission requirements, you have several options: • If you have been out of school for at least one year you can upgrade through a Basic Education program at SIAST (see page 37) or through your high school or community regional college. • You may qualify for special admission. Contact a SIAST counsellor at any campus for details. Special admission may include: - use of an assessment tool called ACCUPLACER that tests math and English skills, and/or - consideration of previously completed certificates, diplomas and degrees from recognized post-secondary institutions.
Note: Because English is the language of instruction and examination at SIAST, applicants whose first or primary language is not English will need to provide evidence of sufficient English skills as an admission requirement. Contact a SIAST counsellor for more information or visit www.goSIAST.com and click Admission & Registration – English Language Requirement.
READY OR NOT? We can help. Get a jump-start on your program by signing up for one or more of SIAST’s postsecondary success courses. Recognition of Prior Learning PLAR
TRANSFER CREDITS
Save time and money as you reach your goals. Through the prior learning assessment and recognition (PLAR) process, you can seek academic credit for the knowledge you’ve already gained through life and work experiences. PLAR considers a variety of ways people learn, such as:
Transfer credits are the educational equivalent of two-for-theprice-of-one. They allow post-secondary students and graduates to pursue additional education in a particular field without going “back to square one”. In some instances, transfer credits mean you can get a degree and a diploma in as little as four years.
• independent study • volunteer work • industry training • workshops • on-the-job training • work experience
These are some of the benefits of transfer credits: • Greater flexibility: Diploma programs provide practical training, which gives you marketable skills in two years. Whether or not you pursue additional education, you’ll have in-demand job skills. • Better return on investment: Tuition costs for a SIAST diploma are often lower than tuition for university degree programs, so you save money. And with diploma programs, you get started on the career of your choice in two years or less. That’s better value for your money.
SIAST VALUES YOUR
PRIOR LEARNING PLAR
TRANSFER CREDITS
10
You have knowledge and skills that you learned through experience or non-formally
You have knowledge and skills that you learned formally at another recognized institution
• More one-on-one attention: SIAST classes are often smaller than university classes, which lets you get to know your classmates better and allows instructors to give you more individual attention. SIAST is continually negotiating transfer credit agreements with universities and other colleges. Check out our website for up-to-date information about transfer credits for the program you’re interested in. Visit goSIAST.com/stuservices/plar/ transfer_credit.shtml.
Hands-on Learning SIAST can take you from high school to the career of your choice in as little as two years. Think about that. Two years from now you could be pulling down a good wage working at a job you enjoy. Your fast track to a career starts at SIAST.
Behind the scenes, program advisory committees ensure your curriculum is relevant and up-to-date. Innovative networking events connect you with potential employers. And, with many programs, the door is open to use your SIAST credentials as a stepping stone to a university degree, professional designation or advanced professional standing.
GET OUT THERE There’s a reason almost 97% of recently surveyed SIAST grads said they’d found work.* Our programs are careerfocused and results-oriented. That means our graduates are job-ready. That’s a big advantage in today’s market. Top employers are competing to recruit quality employees – and they like the blend of knowledge, skills and experience SIAST grads demonstrate. A SIAST education gives you an edge in the job market from Day 1.
Recognition of Prior Learning / Hands-on Learning
SIAST teaches the skills you need to succeed. Our co-op education terms and workplace practicums mean you get on-the-job experience. Class projects focus on real-world topics and attract industry participation. Smaller class sizes mean more one-on-one time with your instructors. When you are in class, the focus isn’t just on lectures; it’s about learning hands-on skills in labs and demos.

Chantal
St.Denis Personal attention.
Like many high school grads, Chantal St. Dennis was eager to jump right into the workforce. But after two years of manual labour, she knew it was time for a “serious life plan.” “I had always enjoyed accounting. So it only made sense that, since I was still dreaming of being an accountant after two years out of school, I needed to go to SIAST.” SIAST not only had the program Chantal wanted – Business Accountancy – it also had consistently high in-field employment rates for grads. That impressed her; so did the small class sizes and the campus activities. Chantal got involved as the Aboriginal Liaison for the Palliser Student Association. Oneon-one attention from qualified instructors was also appealing. “My instructors knew what was most important. They focused on those elements and drilled them into us until they were blue in the face.”
26
Her instructors opened other doors, too. “Having instructors with real-life experience meant they could offer advice, not just about employment but also about professional designations, like CA, CMA and CGA. I was aware of these, I just didn’t know the difference between them or how my SIAST education gave me a huge step towards getting one.” As a freshly minted Business Accountancy graduate, Chantal sees a professional designation in her own future. For now, she’s enjoying the thrill of being a hot commodity in the job market. “I’ve been trained to do everything you need to do to excel in the accounting field, so I’ve been able to hit the ground running.”

It takes wide-ranging expertise to manage Saskatchewan’s vast fisheries, forests, wildlife and parks. SIAST offers training in vital areas. Consider Resource and Environmental Law if you want to ensure resources are protected for future generations. Explore Integrated Resource Management or Forest Ecosystem Technology to play hands-on roles in stewardship, or Geographic Information Systems (GIS) if you’re interested in helping map vast databases of information.

Our connection to industry also lets us offer you training opportunities with First Nations and Métis communities, natural resource-based industries and more.
Natural Resources
Natural Resources practitioners are analytic thinkers with good communications skills and a love of the outdoors. Your education will combine classroom learning with practical outdoor experiences. This emphasis on hands-on learning and broad-based environmental education ensures you’re ready for the workforce at graduation. Karen
O’Neill Uplifting.
When Karen O’Neill was 29, she decided to go back to school. She was looking for a new direction, a chance to spread her wings – only in her case, it wasn’t a cliché. Karen enrolled in SIAST’s award-winning (yeah, we’re proud of that part) Commercial Pilot program. The program is a partnership between SIAST and the Saskatchewan Aviation Council (SAC). It let Karen take ground school training through SIAST while getting her actual flying hours through her local SAC-approved flying school.
34
“The best thing about the SIAST program was being located at the airport and being able to see all types of aircraft landing and taking off. It also helped having educated instructors in the aviation industry; there was always extra help for students whenever you needed it.” The SIAST program plugs directly into the aviation industry, a connection that helped Karen land a summer job with a regional airline. Now in the final stages of becoming a qualified commercial pilot and working toward her multi-engine endorsement and instrument flight rating, she is working part-time for the same airline. She sums up her decision to follow her passion at SIAST in one word: “Uplifting!”
APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING
TRAINING PERIODS
An apprenticeship is a formal agreement between an individual who wants to learn a skill and an employer who needs a skilled worker.
More information about apprenticeship training and start dates for specific training periods may be obtained by contacting the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission at: 2140 Hamilton Street, Regina SK S4P 2E3, Phone: (306) 787-2444, Fax: (306) 787-5105, Toll-free: 1-877-363-0536, www.saskapprenticeship.ca
Apprenticeship training is an “earning while learning” arrangement for a required term. Under the supervision of a certified journeyperson, an apprentice receives knowledge and develops skills associated with a designated trade through on-the-job training. The skills you learn on the job are supplemented with a required number of weeks each year of technical training. Upon successfully completing an apprenticeship program, you are eligible to write an examination to become a certified journeyperson in the trade. You may enter into an apprenticeship contract (become indentured) if you: • are 16 years old or older • have the proper educational requirements • are engaged in a designated trade (either as an employee, employer or self-employed shop owner) When designated, the apprenticeship contract is registered with the provincial government.
APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING PROGRAM AT SIAST Technical training provides you with theory, testing and hands-on experience. It is available in Moose Jaw, Prince Albert, Regina and Saskatoon. For some trades, technical training is also available in cities in other provinces.
Answer: Employers love SIAST grads – almost 97% say they’d hire another SIAST grad.
