Answer: M o that’s more re than 2,500 – than in any post-seco oth n d a ry in st itution in th er e province!

SIAST’s education equity program provides a framework within which we work toward developing a student body that represents every segment of Saskatchewan’s population. To achieve our education equity goals, we take measures to identify, eliminate and/or reduce systemic practices that may create discriminatory barriers for members from the designated groups.

How to Apply WHEN SHOULD I APPLY?

You may apply as soon as you are enrolled in the grade level and the courses you require for admission. For instance, you may apply to a program with Grade 12 as an admission requirement in September of your Grade 12 year. Refer to SIAST’s website under “Admission & Registration” for details: www.goSIAST.com/admissions/. Note: The application period for high-demand programs for the following academic year is October 1 to February 15.

HOW DO I APPLY?

You can either apply online at www.goSIAST.com, print a copy of the application form from the website or obtain a paper copy of the application form from any SIAST campus. Complete the application form and submit it with the required $50 non-refundable application fee. Applicants who apply online must be prepared to pay the application fee by debit or credit card (Visa or MasterCard). You may apply for more than one program, but you must submit a separate application form and pay the application fee for each program or program site you apply to. One of the measures we take to increase opportunities for the designated groups in our Education Equity program is to reserve a percentage of seats in programs for applicants from the designated groups. If one (or more) of the designated groups (see page 7) applies to you, please check off the appropriate item(s) on your Application for Admission form.

8

WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO DO?

Along with your completed application form and $50 application fee, we require: • an official transcript of your high-school marks. If you have already completed the high-school requirements for admission, arrange for an official transcript to be forwarded electronically to us by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education or from the appropriate provincial ministry of education if your requirements were completed outside of Saskatchewan; or • a preliminary statement of high-school standing. If you are currently completing high-school requirements for admission, a conditional admission can be granted based on preliminary results. Upon completion of the requirements, you must arrange for a final official transcript to be sent electronically by the appropriate provincial ministry of education. Final official transcripts are required by August 1. • all other forms required by the program. Some programs are designated high demand, and for these applicants are subject to selection criteria in addition to the academic admission requirements. All admission requirements are detailed on our program web pages on www.goSIAST.com.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

In your acceptance letter we will ask you to pay a $300 tuition deposit within 30 days to hold your spot in the program, so plan that cost into your budget when you apply. If you are not offered a seat in the program to which you applied, you will be required to reapply to the next year’s intake. Please visit our website for additional details.

WHAT IF I DO NOT MEET THE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS?

If you do not meet admission requirements, you have several options: • If you have been out of school for at least one year you can upgrade through a Basic Education program at SIAST (see page 34), or through your high school or community regional college. • You may qualify for special admission. Contact a SIAST counsellor at any campus for details. Special admission may include: – use of an assessment tool called ACCUPLACER that tests math and English skills, and/or – consideration of previously completed certificates, diplomas and degrees from recognized post-secondary institutions. • You may be able to begin your studies as a part-time, unclassified student. Note: Because English is the language of instruction and examination at SIAST, applicants whose first or primary language is not English will need to provide evidence of sufficient English skills as an admission requirement. Contact a SIAST counsellor for more information or visit www.goSIAST.com and click Admission & Registration – English Language Requirement.

SIAST Preview 2011/12 How to Apply

After you are accepted into your program, you will receive an acceptance letter from SIAST letting you know your start date, tuition fees and costs such as books, supplies and student fees. If you are a sponsored student, your sponsoring agency will need to provide us with written confirmation of your sponsorship.

READY OR NOT?

We can help. Get a jump-start on your program by signing up for one or more of SIAST’s post-secondary success courses. Choose from Basic Computer Operation, Pre-Technology Math, Student Achievement Strategies and Writing Improvement. Courses run mid- to late August. For more information call 1-866-goSIAST.

Why Answer: Affordable tuition. At about $3,500 per year, depending on the program, SIAST tuition is less than that for the typical university year.

These are some of the benefits of transfer credits: You have knowledge and skills that you have learned formally at another recognized institution

PLAR

Transfer Credits

SIAST values your prior learning

PLAR

Save time and money as you reach your goals. Through the prior learning assessment and recognition (PLAR) process, you can seek academic credit for the knowledge you’ve already gained through life and work experiences. PLAR considers a variety of ways people learn, such as: • independent study • industry training • on-the-job training

TRANSFER CREDITS

• volunteer work • workshops • work experience

Transfer credits are the educational equivalent of two-forthe-price-of-one. They allow post-secondary students and graduates to pursue additional education in a particular field without going “back to square one”. In some instances, transfer credits mean you can get a degree and a diploma in as little as four years.

• G reater flexibility: Diploma programs provide practical training, which gives you marketable skills in two years. Whether or not you pursue additional education, you’ll have in-demand job skills. • B etter return on investment: Tuition costs for a diploma are often lower than tuition for university degree programs, so you save money. That’s better value for your money. • M ore attention for you: SIAST classes are often smaller than university classes, which lets you get to know your classmates better and allows instructors to give you more individual attention. SIAST is continually negotiating transfer credits agreements with universities and other colleges. Check out our website for up-to-date information about transfer credits for the program you’re interested in. Visit goSIAST.com/stuservices/plar/ transfer_credit.shtml.

Industry Accredited The Canadian Council of Technicians and Technologists’ Canadian Technology Accreditation Board accredits most of our Technology programs at the technician or technologist level. After two years of suitable experience, many graduates are also eligible for membership in the Saskatchewan Applied Science Technologists and Technicians as applied science technicians or technologists.

Apprenticeship Training An apprenticeship is a formal agreement between an individual who wants to learn a skill and an employer who needs a skilled worker. Apprenticeship training is an “earning while learning” arrangement for a required term. Under the supervision of a certified journeyperson, an apprentice receives knowledge and develops skills associated with a designated trade through on-the-job training. The skills you learn on the job are supplemented with a required number of weeks each year of technical training. Upon successfully completing an apprenticeship program, you are eligible to write an examination to become a certified journeyperson in the trade. Apprenticeship Contract You may enter into an apprenticeship contract (become indentured) if you: • are 16 years old or older • have the proper educational requirements • are engaged in a designated trade (either as an employee, employer or self-employed shop owner) When designated, the apprenticeship contract is registered with the provincial government. Apprenticeship Training Program at SIAST Technical training provides you with theory, testing and hands-on experience. It is available in Moose Jaw, Prince Albert, Regina and Saskatoon. For some trades, technical training is also available in cities in other provinces.
