01 HERE TO HERE AFTER Focused on Memory, Scene and Memorial Crematorium Design Individual Project | Independent Study Summer 2016 The project address humanity through a series of scenes and engagement to the site.The material, scale ,view are carefully considered.The sea,the sand,the shadow and the light are strong prove of existing time and space.The half buried lighthouse quietly tells the past days.The horizontal volume act as contrast and unity to the existing vertical lighthouse,it disappears into the sand and stand facing to the sea. It speak to every element to the site in proper word. The temporality of human flesh and the eternity of human spirit merger into a seamless whole. In the built space, this seamless whole carries on. “Here To Here After” is a place to recall,to farewell, it’s a place of mourning, a moment to memorize. Here I express my highly respect for nature and life and the miss for loved ones.
SITE MEMORY The lighthouse was lit for the first time in 1900. The lighthouse was built on the coastal slope's highest point. When the lighthouse was built, it was 200 meters inland and there were no large dunes around it. With time the sea moved in closer and simultaneously the wind blew large amount of sand up from the cliff. In 1968 an enormous sand dune devoured lighthouse leaving the tower as the only remaining structure, poised on the edge of the rapidly eroding cliff. The struggle against the sand was given up and the lighthouse lit for the last time. The lighthouse serve the boat for decades and now is people's memory.

Through the whole life time, there are countless moment to capture and life and death, the two opposite state are connected via memory. Memory is stored in the scene. In the built space, this seamless whole carries on.
SPATIAL SEQUENCE
A sequence of memorial scenes is created in general consideration of the activity, people’s mood, site and the traditional Yin Yang theory.

MEMORIAL SCENE A series of scenes is created for people to recall the past, memorize the moment and finally move to the future. Each scene mark the important moment of the whole mourning process. Strong engagement to the site reinforce the memorial atmosphere.

02 MUSEUM IN THE OLD CITY Focused on Context, Intervention and Regeneration Museum Extension, Pamplona Option Studio | Individual Project Instructor: Fernando Tabuenca Fall 2017 The studio work within the walls of the old city of Pamplona (Spain). Its plan reflects the city’s history: the oldest part dates from Roman times, and new neighbourhoods have been added from the Middle Ages up to the present day. I focus on the relationships between old and new buildings in terms of form, texture, materials and architectural language. The aim is to understand the influence of the site and the context in shaping the project, and how this collage of interventions from different periods can work together and constitute a unique and harmonious urban ensemble through the addition and juxtaposition of different pieces. We propose the enlargement of the current “Museo de Navarra” (the regional Art Museum) by the addition of a new building. On the edge of the old city, facing a square to the south and overlooking the mountains to the north, this strategic site offers a good opportunity to create a landmark and contribute to the urban regeneration of this area. Here I express my respect for the past story of the city.

When I visited the old museum, I was touched by its spatial experience. A piece of wall stands in the middle. As you walk around it, you get firstly a bright space, then a dark space. When you go up, the experience is repeated. The museum used to be a hospital before it was converted into a museum in 1930's.The regular facade give the gallery its rhythem of light. The spatial effect and facade indicates its history.

OLD CITY The site is crutial point to get the old city and new city connected. A piece of wall stands in the site. For the outside, it narrows down the street to follow the street width of old city. For the inside, it forms a sculpture garden for the museum. The wall is only 1m high. The connection between the garden and street is close. The urban movement is active.

Ground level is open to public. People come from narrow street to the square and go down to the sculpture garden and you can circulate the garden and enter either way. From the lobby, all the public program are accessible, like cafe, workshop, bookstore, library, auditorium. Those programs are also open to people without ticket to the gallery.

DIALOGUE | Construction Detail & Rendering When you go in from the main entrance, the ceiling is compressed to give you a horizontal view of the old facade. Light comes from the top to lighten the facade. It is like a long painting. You take step by step forward, the fadade gradually unroll in front of you. You finally get a vertical view and you are at the lobby.

SPEAK THE OLD WORDS IN A NEW WAY The new gallery has similiar spatial experience to the old museum (dark and light space) but in a different way. It is flexible space (low and tall space) to accomodate different contemporary artwork. It uses the same local stone that the old museum used but construct it in modern way.
04 PART OF LIFE Focused on Infrastructure, System and Interaction Paper Recycling Factory Redesign | New York Architecture and Ecology Studio | Group Work Collaborator: Xiangru Chen, Zihong Hao, Di Nie, Shiyuan He Instructor: Jesse Le Cavalier & Tei Carpenter Summer 2017 You wake up in the morning every day and never notice that the city is working with all the trucks and machines running invisibly. Infrastructure is usually hidden in city. They are invisible to public. After a close study of paper-recycling process, we find that the city is alive. We believe that infrastracture can generate activity and activity can bring diversity to the infrastructure. Through design, waste can become energy and resource for activities. There can be a healthy relationship between human city activity and infrastructure. The site is in Roosevelt Island which used to be a close island and now is an open system connected with Manhattan and Queens. Here I express my respect to the hidden infrastructure and people that keep the city running.
PAPER RECYCLING| Process study
1. Collection In NYC, trashes from residential buildings are collected by the city and others are collected by commercial trash-collecting companies. Paper are collected from trash bins and deposited in the large recycling containers.
2. Sorting

3. Shredding and Pulping After sorting, the paper is shredding to break into small bits, and mixed with water and chemicals to breakdown fiber and turn it into a slurry substance. Later a large amount of water is added to make pulp and then passed through a series of screens to remove larger pieces of contaminants. Then pulp is mixed up with pulp of longer paper fibers to solidify and form a firmer end product.
4. Filtering and De-Inking The slurry pulp is then filtered to get rid of all the non-fibrous materials or impurities. The contaminants are removed by centrifuge-like process. Then the pulp is put into a flotation device made up of chemicals and air bubbles, to takes away a dyes or ink.
5. Finishing for Reuse The cleaned pulp is blended with new production materials and dried on a flat conveyor belt and heated cylindrical surfaces. Then the pulp goes through the pressure process to press out excess water, after which, there are steam heated cylinders to flatten long rolls of continuous sheets of paper. The resultant paper sheets are then trimmed, rolled, and sent to various business outlets.

The intention of the design is to combine the paper recycling process with people's life and make good use of the output of the system. The site is on Roosevelt Island which used to be a close island for prisoner. Through design, we add it a strong connection with Manhattan and Queens. Physically, through different transportation,like bridge, subway and cable car. Materially, the input come from the nearby city and the output can feed them back.

RECYCLING PROCESS IS A PART OF LIFE There is no more hiding, there is no more waste. The recycling system is no more a undergoing process away from people. It is open and interconnected with people's daily life. The waste become energy, the output feed the city back.
05 FLOW Focused on Praxiology, Linear, Fusion Public Bath Complex Architecture Design, Beijing BJUT Core Studio 6th semester Individual Project | Instructor:Hanwen Liao Summer 2015
The project address humanity through Praxiology, and through two linear space and one central space,inclusion is promoted. Beijing traditional pubic bath used to be an indispensable public space for residence in old Beijing area. Different people come and various activities occurs from the most public to the most private. Now Hutong become more public, how can the collective space include different kinds of people without invading each privacy. The water is the key to solve the problem. In this project, people can feel the existence of each other and the sound of water control the degree of contact between them. The altitude difference between the inside and the outside naturally provide the water different roles in each room. Privacy is Insured, the atmosphere of the bath house is enhanced and more spontaneous activities can be triggered. Here I express my highly respect for traditional Beijing culture and the miss for my childhood memory.
BEIJING PUBLIC BATH | Research and Site It's quite interesting that the most private place known to other culture become the most public place in Beijing. Actually public bath is an indispensable social place for local residents, just like a square in narrow Hutong. Let us see what can happen here. Every person can come no matter who. The limited space offers different privacy level and various activities are distributed naturally from the most public to the most private. With clothes taken off, people see each other as human being and act sincerely towards each other.

Seated at the ending also starting point of the tourist street, near to the residential area, the public bath is a place for leisure and for true Beijing culture experience for tourists and daily routines for local residents.

DEFINE PRIVACY LEVEL | Spatical Model & Typology
RECEPTION
A series of public spaces with different privacy levels is created to encourage multi-level activities between different groups of people. The tourists occupy the outside leisure alley while the local stay inside doing various activities. The two are connected through water. The existence of the altitude difference allow water to pour from the outside alley to the inside room after filtration. There is a mild slope outside insuring the water flow smoothly down. The altitude of the inside go down fast. So, going further to the spiral center, the altitude difference increase. The sound of water goes up and the contact between two flow of people decrease. In addition, the pouring water naturally act different roles at different altitude. All happen naturally and good spatial quality increased people’s disposition towards each other.

06 [IN] VISIBLE GAP Focused on Settlement, Growth, Occupy Transformation of Old Communities Oriented by City Drifter The 4th "CUC Cup" Competition| The Third Prize Group Work| Team Leader Contribution: Concept, Research, Design, Drawing Collaborator: Can Ge, Xiaodan Zhou Instructor: Hanwen Liao Fall 2015 The project address humanity through the design which save diverse opportunity for future and floating people finally can occupy the space and develop their life in the city. We explore the potential of architecture to bring diversity, inclusivity, and necessary unity to the rapid urbanism. Each building was a fixed frame with basic facilities; units were inserted into it as flexible constructions. Residents' self-built process started with the development of living demands. We reach a balance between order and freedom. The system is transformed and grew freely under a unified framework, which could resist drawbacks of pure top-down or bottom-up design process and satisfy diverse and ever-growing living requirements of city drifters. Here I express my highly respect for people pursuing dream in foreign land and for my dad and mum who were Beijing earliest drifters.

Housing Development Timeline
China is undergoing the fastest urbanization known to man. In the next 10 years an additional 300 million people are expected to relocate to urban areas. This speed of development puts extensive pressure on Chinese cities, but little has been done to understand the impact on the daily life of people. We find the urban texture of Beijing is looser than most of high density cities in the world. There are huge urban gaps seem to be invisible for the authority and developer.

Natural construction activities in old courtyard houses during last population exploration in China are considered to be highly reproducible for further design. In some aspects, the project is a vertical version of spontaneous housing development. To deal with different urban situation, different frame system typologies are designed and applied to Beijing’s urban gaps.

The Project offers a flexible frame to the poor people who cannot afford the incredibly high housing price in Beijing. The development system allows people choose, combine and develop their modular space units. As a result, this building will 'grow freely in an organized way’.
CITY STREET
In this system, series of modular units are provided to the residents and could satisfy the basic needs of people’s daily life. In the future, the residents will add new modular units to their home for emerging life or work needs which could gradually fill the frame system in spontaneous way.

WELCOME TO THE GROWING CITY Frame system and modular units could fill the torn urban public elevation and bring diversity to the street. The system saves drifters diverse opportunity for future development, till they finally can occupy the space and dwell in the city.
07 RELATE Focused on Inherit, Enclose, Bridge Student Center Based on Existing Buildings BJUT Core Studio 8th Semester| Group Work Concept, Research, Design, Drawing, Modeling, Construction Collaborator: Can Ge, Xiaodan Zhou Instructor: Li Jiang,Chen Zhe Summer 2016
The project address humanity through respect for the existing historic building and plug them into today's emerging needs of people. While connecting the old and new, the site is full of vitality. Beijing, the ancient and contemporary capital of China, is a mixture of the new and the old. Rapid development brings not only wealth but also heterogeneity in different urban part: huge modern public center mixed with little historic buildings. A thorough research on the exact needs of visitors, students and faculty is conducted, indicating that the needs could be divided into two parts: existing fixed programs and changeable programs. Therefore, instead of demolishing the historic buildings, a horizontal space is added on the old buildings, enclosing heritage and containing emerging needs. This horizontal space forms a sheltered ground floor plaza for outdoor activities and a free large indoor space for exhibition and conference. Also, the light patios offer soft light and fresh air for the activities on the second floor and vegetation on the ground floor. Finally, structure and construction details are considered thoroughly in this project to conduct a dialogue between old historic buildings and modern renovation space. Here I express my love for my college and the desire to communicate in an amazing student center.

The cafĂŠ house, grand hotel and conference hall locating in the corner of the campus are not only the precious heritage of Beijing University of Technology, but also the critical communicating center between university and the public. When the needs of visitors and students grow rapidly, a new renovation project is designed on the existing site. Architecture form follows the thorough research on the needs of visitors and students, adopting old buildings for fixed program and generating horizontal new space for free activities. Light patio not only offers enough light for the middle part of the huge horizontal space to hold an exhibition or conference, but also form a perfect ground floor space for vegetation and people’s activities.

DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE OLD AND THE NEW The indoor view illustrates the scene where old buildings and new space connects. Urban view behind the modern truss structure and historic brick walls stand together in the open space. Soft light from patio offers a comfortable environment for exhibition and the other activities.

Focused on Technology, Practice, Extension Through my undergraduate architectural study, I have been trying to explore the boundary of architecture and I am glad that I have opportunity to attend in real practice project to response to my concern and devote my passion in more creative ways.
CITY OF LOW MEDIUM AND HIGH DENSITY CONCEPT DRAWING: LOW, MEDIUM, AND HIGH-DENSITY
Architecture and Urban Study We focus on the layering circulation networks (segregation of roads, pedestrian movements and intersections) based on the relative density of the area. As a Utopian conditon, city block formats were explored for areas of low, middle and high density. Each system addresses the multi-level nature of human and vehicle interaction and separates the users from the ground condition where it is beneficial.

Architecture and Urban Study As an intervention in New York City, a city block module was developed where a hierarchy of space were created, separeting the urban public, semi-public and private users at different levels, vertically. In a densely populated city, the self-contained blocks with a mixed use programs that incorporate a public area could possibly develop into a series of inter-connected zones, with transition spaces across the blocks at higher levels.
Architecture and Discourse Study In plan, the elements and poche inside the regular boxes define the space where animals and human are suppose to be. The relationship of poche and void would reverse as the circulation go through.
Architecture and Discourse Study In elevation,elements appear as the highly heterogeneous towers encircled by regular bxes, which connect towers horizontally. The seemingly homogeneous boxes in plan has varying levels of openness and materiality. These identities would build rich internal and external relationship.

Wood Structure Study The wood structure is designed, modeled and tested in Karamba (a plugin of grasshopper). Several adjustment were made according to the test result. Element, joint, crosssection and materiality were taken in consideration. JOINT DETAIL

Wood Joint Study This kind of wood joint needs very precise crosssection of beam, bracing, post and stripe. Every element comes together as one piece to hold the structure stable and no nail is needed to hold elements in their position.
Architecture and Representation Study From a single object to the compose of the module. Explore the possibilities with positive and negative of form. Think of solid and void of space.
Architecture and Representation Study I use the same color of wax to represent mountain and water. even if it is less architecture related, I use model to study color and texture. Model is a good way to explore possibilities, to represent ideas and to suggest architecture decisions.
Information Center Project (Constructed) From abandoned house to community information center. The close connection between the inside and outside bring much vitality to both the street and the room.
Shijia 22 Renovation Project (Constructed) The old room is wrapped with cork board, maximizing the function of information center, making the project possible under very tight budget.
Virtual Reality Project During the preservation process of Shenze Wenmiao, we panoramic scanned the ancient architecture and use gyro to control walking in the building and Eye recognition technology to realize immersive experience.
Augmented Reality Project Based on the data-collection and the construct 3D model of ancient architecture, We program and connect the image information with the 3D model to further popularize ancient architecture to public.
Color Drawing and Pen Sketch I like to capture a moment via my pen. The old Suzhou street. Windows have been blocked and opened up for several times. The disorder elevation records the story of the house. I captured this moment in this building's life.
