Sid Sidebottom MP
… for a fair go in Braddon
MEDIA RELEASE 23 September 2010
UNCERTAIN FUTURE FOR CARPET FACTORY SAD NEWS News that Devonport carpet maker Tascot faces an uncertain future is sad news for the NorthWest and most especially the workers and their families says the Federal Member for Braddon Sid Sidebottom MP. Mr Sidebottom said the carpet factory has had a long history of producing quality carpets, however, but has been unable to compete in the very fierce textile, clothing and footwear sector. “This has not been from a lack of effort, expertise or financial support from government over the years,” Mr Sidebottom said. “I have spoken to management to express my sympathy and to offer my support for the company and employees, whatever course this may take. “While it is no substitute for the continuation of the enterprise, there is a structural adjustment program to assist redundant workers in the sector, along with support from the North-West local employment coordinator, productivity places program and other Job Services Australia programs. “It is to be hoped that these programs will assist some of the workers transition into further training and or alternative employment. Likewise it is to be hoped that some may find employment with some of the enterprises expanding under the $17 million North-West Northern Tasmanian Innovation and Investment Fund. “This further blow to manufacturing on the North-West Coast is hard to take but the Coast continues to diversify its employment opportunities in spite of this.” For more information or to arrange an interview call - Luke Sayer on 6431 1333 or 0458 311 355
