BETWEEN

AND

EMOTIONS

Haryana, India Semester 10

This thesis aims to question myths, try to change mindsets and educate even the most educated men and women in an area of their life that they never openly talked about. An architectural insert that reaches out to a wide audience (specifically children) with varying backgrounds wherein the content of the gallery is conveyed via short stories, artworks, installations, the play of light and volumes. The visitor needs to be treated carefully through a structured narrative whose elements may be followed in order to join the dots of the story. Meanwhile, it is also important to succour the survivors of violence by providing a safe environment where they can rebuild themselves. HOSPITAL

Zoning Options

The diagrams show different options for zoning. Emotions in architecture evoke when an architectural object transmits a message to the user and successful architecture must be capable of attracting our senses whether smoothly or brutally - whether through indifference or excitement - whether through happiness or tumultuously.

TOURIST

CENTRE

Mumbai, India Semester 9

The site under consideration ranges from Dockyard Road Station to Mazagaon Garden. In a radius of 1.2kms around the area of consideration are important places like Joseph Baptista Gardens locally known as the Mazagaon Garden, Rani Baugh, J.J. Hospital and Medical College, heritage structures of historical importance in Dongri, Synagogues, etc. It has activities like ship building and maritime services going on in it’s east, J.J. Hospital having roots since the 19th century and dense housing in Dongri to its south-west and Cotton Green with its strong role in Bombay being known for textile, to its north. Sattelite Image of Eastern Waterfront,Mumbai

Principles of Intelligent Urbanism Balance with Nature

Human Scale

The area lacks open spaces. Mazagaon is dominated by industrial and residential landuse. Most streets look dull because of the underutilized industries adjacent to them.

There is lack of proper pathways on the roads.

Balance with Tradition

Opportunity Matrix

The area in and around Mazagaon lacks balance with tradition because of the slums coming up right next to the vintage homes adjacent to the Dockyard Road Station.

Mazagaon is dominated by industrial and residential landuse which promotes economic growth. Social amenities like schools and hospitals cater to the residents.

Conviviality

Balanced Movement

Mazagaon Garden being the only space of its kind serves as an open breathing space in the vicinity. However, the garden lacks a proper access and recognition it deserves.

The pathways are not maintained and do not encourage pedestrians. There is no proper public transport from east to west and the Station fails to have a taxi stand.

Efficiency

Approprite Technology

Dockyard Road Railway Station lacks efficient public transport which encourages private vehicles thus increasing congestion on the road.

Though it is illegal and should not be promoted, the use of light weight roofs on steel structures at the steep Bhandarvada hill is remarkable.

ISSUES

Lack of access to Mazagaon Garden

ADVANTAGE

OPPORTUNITIES

Neglegance of user friendly design elements at Dockyard Road Sta on

Proximity of the site to the Dockyard Road Railway Sta on

Opening up Mazagaon Garden to a larger audience

Taking advantage of the vantage point

Designing an interes ng journey from outside to the garden

Inadequate parking at Hutatma Marg Road Hutatma Marg Road being predominantly a residential lane demands for an adequate parking space which it lacks. Parking of vehicles on the roads causes congestion and decreases the effective road width. It also makes the space unsafe for pedestrians as the foothpaths are blocked and cannot be used to their full potential.

Existing section through Hutatma Marg Road

Proposed section through Hutatma Marg Road

Decrease in Effective Road Width Parking of cars and heavy duty vehicles under the Eastern Express Highway and on the road side causes decrease in the effective road width.

Existing section through Kasakar Basin Road

Proposed section through Kasakar Basin Road

Existing section through Malet Bunder Road

Proposed section through Malet Bunder Road

Inadequate infrastructure at Dockyard Road Railway Station Dockyard Road Railway Station which comes under the Harbour Railway Line is not frequented by a lot of people and hence there are only two platforms on the station. There is no connection between the two platforms via a foot-over bridge and both the platforms have two separate entrances. This encourages people to cross railway tracks and causes confusion to the visitors.

Two humongous volumes with multiple horizontal voids are placed parallel to each other, running east-west across the site. The idea was to give back a freely accessible ground plane that subverts the typical tower/podium model, with public amenities wedged to it such that they bring back the missing “open space - built mass relationship of the city. The multiple double height voids and terraces play an important role in vertical community integration. Defined sidewalks and drive ways provide for a safe environment at the stilt level The entrance for the commercial spaces is kept seperate from the main entrance, althought the residents do have a direct connect with the commercial street.

EXTENSION

OF

CDSA

Pune, India Semester 2

The extension to Centre for Development Studies and Activities, Pune, is an attempt to eliminate the typical notion of what a reading and working space should look like. Play of levels significantly helped in abolishing the need of furniture thus establishing a direct connect between the structure and the user. A formal working / meeting space is wedged to the ground level with more informal activities happening on the levels above. The basic design principles of gradient, connectivity and alternating repitition have been used as part of the design process.

Project Description

38 & Banyan is a project in which the site is nested among large chunks of residential area with copious amount of green cover. The form of the building grows out of the lush tree cover as a physical response and includes active interaction with trees volumetrically. It’s a 10 storey high end residential project with 38 apartments. The objective of the project was to achieve quality living within a small framework.

Responsibilities

The major responsibilities carried out by me in this project was detailing the landscape sections, presentation of landscape, design options of landscape, making working drawings for the joinery, handrails, elevations and updating the floor plans, schedulees, joinery and elevations as per the changes discussed in weekly on site meetings, over the course of time.
