Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen revealed 3D-printed garments and accessories “grown” with magnets during her ready-to-wear show in Paris two days ago. “Magnetic Motion” was the title of the Dutch designer’s SpringSummer 2015 show and it was inspired by the Large Hadron Collider aer she visited CERN (The world’s largest particle physics laboratory) in Switzerland earlier this year.

Elie Saab’s model army walked to a military beat the designer exchanged his signature fairytale romance for something darker, harder and tougher, "the way of the woods", we were told. So structure and gilded buons were all key, as was a khaki dark colour palee on trailing capes and stand-up straight collars. There was lots of fur trim on coats made in mind for protecting you from whatever the forest may have on offer hiding among it.

Giorgio Armani showcased his Haute Couture at the Palais de Tokyo, with a collection that opened with a range of small pea jackets and shorts in paerned fabrics with a quilted effect. These were then followed by short jackets with three-quarter length sleeves and crape woolen trousers, which demonstrate a simplicity and grand elegance.

WARNING In keeping with Lamborghini tradition, the new Huracán is named aer a courageous fighting bull - in this case a famous example from the Spanish Conte de la Patilla breed. The latest product of Sant’Agata definitely has all the prerequisites to take over from the Gallardo, the most successful Lamborghini model of all time, while taking on its close rival from Maranello. The new 610HP ‘baby’ Lamborghini moves the game on significantly. At first glance, the Huracán represents evolution, not revolution, when compared with its predecessor. Low, clean, sharp-edged design combined with all-wheel drive and a V10 engine is a familiar – and winning – formula. But the devil is in the detail. The new Huracán is both lighter and more powerful than the equivalent Gallardo and features a new 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

The design is simple and pure, with one continuous line taking the eye from the base of the windscreen right through to the tail. Overall, the look is cleaner, sharper and chunkier. The signature hexagon appears in various design details, including air intakes. Inside, the cockpit is dominated by a full-colour 12.3-inch TFT instrument panel for all car information, from satellite navigation to revolutions per minute. Huracán blasts from 0-62mph in just 3.2 seconds, with a top speed (you do have a private track, don’t you?) of 200mph. The ‘Lamborghini Dynamic Steering’ variable steering ratio system and magneto-rheologic suspension damper control are both available as options. www.lamborghini.com

BUGAT VIRTUAL SUPERCARS

Bugai has unveiled its Vision Gran Turismo, a hypercar designed for Polyphony Digital's everexpanding slate of fanciful, incredible cars designed for Gran Turismo's virtual world. It will be on the floor of the Frankfurt auto show later this month. The company says that the Vision Gran Turismo car celebrates Bugai's history, but you can clearly see strong elements of Veyron in here, and they've previously hinted that design elements on this car would foreshadow Bugai's future. In other words, we're probably seeing at least a few elements here from the Chiron, the company's next hypercar expected to launch next year for in excess of $2 million with well over 1,400 horsepower and a top speed approaching 300 miles per hour.

The designers have unmistakably transferred the most important characteristics of Bugai's design DNA into the styling of the virtual race car. Consequently, the side view of the Bugai Vision Gran Turismo is characterised by the famous Bugai line. And the virtual race car has also been furnished with the most recognisable symbol of a Bugai, the horse shoe on the front grille. It is placed in the centre of the central front air intake as three-dimensional sculpture and supports the structure between the wings and the aerodynamic front splier.


TTI GT An interesting detail on the roof is the NACA air intake, which, with its contrasting light blue finish, not only has a strikingly beautiful shape but also makes a crucial contribution to the control of the aerodynamic conditions on top of and at the rear of the car without compromising the effectiveness of the impressive rear wing.

The car has a strong trailing edge which provides great longitudinal-dynamic stability, exhausts the hot air from the engine compartment and, no less important, communicates to the pursuer in the video game that a Bugai is geing away from him. www.bugai.com

Villa Savoye by Le Corbusier Designed by Swiss architects Le Corbusier and his cousin, Pierre Jeanneret, Villa Savoye is an early and classic example of the International style – a major architectural style that emerged in the 1920s and '30s. Villa Savoye was originally built as a country retreat for the Savoye family in 1928.

Le Corbusier is famous for stating, “The house is a machine for living.” This statement is not simply translated into the design of a human scaled assembly line; rather the design begins to take on innovative qualities and advances found in other fields of industry, in the name of efficiency.

Situated in Poissy and completed in 1929, Villa Savoye is a modern take on a French country house that celebrates and reacts to the new machine age.

In response to his aspirations and admiration of mechanized design, Le Corbusier established “The Five Points” of architecture, which is simply a list of prescribed elements to be incorporated in design: Pilotis; Flat Roof Terrace; Open Plan; Ribbon Windows; Free Façade

The house single handedly transformed Le Corbusier’s career as well as the principles of the International Style; becoming one of the most important architectural precedents in history.

At this point in Le Corbusier’s career, he became intrigued by the technology and design of steamships. The simplistic, streamlined result born out of innovative engineering techniques and modular design had influenced Corbusier’s spatial planning and minimalistic aesthetic.


Fallingwater by Frank Lloyd Wright Frank Lloyd Wright, America’s most famous architect, designed Fallingwater for his clients, the Kaufmann family, and it was built between 1936 and 1939. It instantly became famous, and today it is a National Historic Landmark. Wright's admiration for Japanese architecture was important in his inspiration for this house, along with most of his work. Just like in Japanese architecture, Wright wanted to create harmony between man and nature, and his integration of the house with the waterfall was successful in doing so.

ECTURE Wright revolved the design of the house around the fireplace, the hearth of the home which he considered to be the gathering place for the family. Here a rock cuts into the fireplace, physically bringing in the waterfall into the house. He also brings notice to this concept by dramatically extending the chimney upwards to make it the highest point on the exterior of the house.

The exterior of Fallingwater enforces a strong horizontal paern with the bricks and long terraces. The windows on the facade have also have a special condition where they open up at the corners, breaking the box of the house and opening it to the vast outdoors. VIENNA STATE OPERA

The structure of the opera house was planned by the Viennese architect August Sicard von Sicardsburg, while the inside was designed by interior decorator Eduard van der Nüll. It was also impacted by other major artists such as Moritz von Schwind, who painted the frescoes in the foyer, and the famous "Zauberflöten" (“Magic Flute”) series of frescoes on the veranda. Neither of the architects survived to see the opening of ‘their’ opera house: the sensitive van der Nüll commied suicide, and his friend Sicardsburg died of a stroke soon aerwards. On May 25, 1869, the opera house solemnly opened with Mozart's Don Juanin the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth. The popularity of the building grew under the artistic influence of the first directors: Franz von Dingelstedt, Johann Herbeck, Franz Jauner, and Wilhelm Jahn. The Vienna opera experienced its first high point under the direction of Gustav Mahler. He completely transformed the outdated performance system, increased the precision and timing of the performances, and also utilized the experience of other noteworthy artists, such as Alfred Roller, for the formation of new stage aesthetics.

The years 1938 to 1945 were a dark chapter in the history of the opera house. Under the Nazis, many members of the house were driven out, pursued, and killed, and many works were not allowed to be played.

On March 12, 1945, the opera house was devastated during a bombing, but on May 1, 1945, the “State Opera in the Volksoper” opened with a performance of Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro. On October 6, 1945, the hastily restored “Fidelio an der Wien” reopened with Beethoven's FIDELIO. For the next ten years the Vienna State Opera operated in two venues while the true headquarters was being rebuilt at a great expense The Secretary of State for Public Works, Julius Raab, announced on May 24, 1945, that reconstruction of the Vienna State Opera would begin immediately. Only the main facade, the grand staircase, and the Schwind Foyer had been spared from the bombs. On November 5, 1955, the Vienna State Opera reopened with a new auditorium and modernized technology. Under the direction of Karl Böhm, Beethoven’s Fidelio was brilliantly performed, and the opening ceremonies were broadcast by Austrian television. The whole world understood that life was beginning again for this country that had just regained its independence. Today, the Vienna State Opera is considered one of the most important opera houses in the world; in particular, it is the house with the largest repertoire. ROYAL OPERA HOUSE LONDON The Royal Opera was formed as the Covent Garden Opera Company in 1946, but behind it lies a tradition of operatic performance which goes back for more than 260 years at its home in Covent Garden. In each of the three theatres there have been on the site since 1732, opera has played an important role. The present theatre was built in 1858. During World War II it was used as a dance hall but aer the war the idea of public subsidy of the arts was accepted and the decision was made to establish the Royal Opera House as the permanent yearround home of the opera and ballet companies now known as The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet. It was the ballet company which reopened the building on 20 February 1946 with The Sleeping Beauty. The two Companies combined for Purcell’s The Fairy Queen that December, and on 14 January 1947, Covent Garden Opera Company gave its first complete opera performance, Bizet’s Carmen.

It’s hard to find a more spectacular seing for a Grand Prix than Yas Island, on the eastern side of Abu Dhabi. It’s home to numerous 5-star hotels and the Ferrari Theme Park, and the 5.55kilometre (3.45-mile) Yas Marina Circuit is a suitably glamorous addition to the FIA Formula One World Championship. The track has many unique touches. It runs alongside the island’s spectacular marina; it passes under the new 5star Yas Viceroy hotel and alongside a new 60metre sun tower. The exit of the pit lane even crosses under the circuit.

Away from Yas Island, Abu Dhabi has lots to offer. It’s the largest and wealthiest of the seven United Arab Emirates, with a crude oil supply that isn’t expected to run out until the 22nd century. And one of the jewels in Abu Dhabi's crown is the new 5.55-kilometre Yas Marina Circuit, which on November 1, 2009, hosted the country's inaugural Grand Prix. It was also the first F1 twighlight race, with powerful lighting ensuring a seamless transition from day to night. Located on the spectacular Yas Island, the track is set to revolutionise the design of future Formula One circuits. Boasting top speeds of 320 km/h and average speeds of 195 km/h, it features nine right turns and 11 le turns and is one of the few venues on the calendar to run in an anti-clockwise direction. Designed by renowned circuit architect Hermann Tilke, Yas Marina has a waterfront seing scenic enough to rival the likes of Monaco and Valencia. And with the track wrapping itself around the island's glamorous newly-built marina, there's plenty of mooring space for the paddock's plethora of yachts. Its distinctive design also boasts several innovative elements including the iconic fivestar, 499-room Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi hotel, which straddles the circuit; the 60-metre solar powered Sun Tower, which offers unrivalled views for invited guests; and a pit lane which sees the cars exit via a tunnel passing under the track. Another world first is that all of the grandstands, including the massive hairpin seating area, are covered to protect spectators from the desert sun, whilst the state-of-the-art pit building boasts 40 air-conditioned garages. Luxuriant comforts and first-rate views are clearly the watchwords for Abu Dhabi race goers. The track itself was designed with racing in mind. As well as the waterside marina area, there are high-speed sections (including the longest straight on the F1 calendar), tight corners for overtaking, and even a twisty street circuit-style sector. Overall, its diverse elements come together to create one of the longest and most demanding tracks in the world, where close and competitive racing is guaranteed.

Roughly 95% of the world’s chocolate is made from mass- produced varieties of cacao beans, which are primarily grown in countries and continents far from cacao’s homeland. OWNER'S STORY There are many private islands in Maldives, but only very few of them are truly private, owned by one person. Velaa Private Island is such a case. The owner, Jiri Smejc, has spent countless weeks in Maldives both on holidays and while taking his business trips from Europe to Asia. The islands became his true passion: many of them being beautiful, but each of them coming short on some part of the visitor experience he valued. That's why he decided to build the Velaa Private Island. An island meeting his ideas what a luxurious private resort should be. Overlooking a majestic lake in the 150 000 hectare Malililangew Wildlife Reserve, in a secluded south-eastern corner of Zimbabwe, sits the sixsuite luxury lodge. Drawing its energy from the slightest changes of temperature, it consumes 65 million times less energy than a 15-Wa light bulb.

The Artcurial sale will offer several very rare models from the 1930s. For its part, the JaegerLeCoultre Manufacture is offering a unique piece especially made for this sale, with the proceeds to be donated to a charitable association, the AMM (The Monaco Association against Muscular Dystrophy).

A change of one degree is enough to run the clock for 48 hours. Having served as the official gi of the Swiss government for over half a century, the Atmos has become an emblem of Swiss watchmaking excellence, and a cult object for its many fans.

Created by Italian Haute Couturier Eore Biloa at his atelier in Milan, the new uniform exudes a classic elegance seldom seen in the aisles of modern airliners, and cleverly merges dramatic elements of old world haute couture from 1960s Paris and Rome, with the more contemporary fashions evident on the runways of London, New York, Milan and Tokyo. Made from 100 per cent Italian wool, the uniforms feature an intricate jacquard design and were made in various locations across Italy, with additional manufacturing taking place in Shanghai, Tunis and Bucharest by a dedicated team which totalled approximately 400 staff. Uniquely, approximately 30 per cent of the outfits were handmade or handstitched. Stylishly cut and fied, each ensemble is easy to wear, flexible and practical, allowing cabin and ground personnel ease of movement as they carry out their duties. The uniforms have been created incorporating almost all the brand colours of Etihad Airways’ brand palee. A warm chocolate brown has been chosen as the base colour for the different uniform variations, with a deep purple accent colour for cabin crew and lounge teams, and a burnt orange accent colour for ground crews and Special Services teams. Graff Diamonds just released images of a new statement diamond to add to what is a very long list of diamonds that are among the largest and rarest in the world. Graff’s latest catch is being called “The Golden Empress,” a 132.55-carat Fancy Intense cushioncut yellow diamond. The diamond is set on a necklace with approximately 30 other yellow diamonds. Fancy colored diamonds are very popular these days as adornment and investment, because of their beauty and rarity. Only one in 10,000 diamonds discovered are classified as fancy colored. So it’s even rarer to find one a particular color, such as this yellow diamond.


Laurence Graff, the founder of the international luxury diamond and jewelry firm that bears his name, purchased the 299-carat rough diamond that created The Golden Empress. It was unearthed from the Letšeng mine in the tiny southern African kingdom of Lesotho. “The potential to cra a diamond that could join its hall of noble, historic and world famous stones was a thrilling prospect,” Graff said in a statement.

The company then set out to study the rough to determine the best way to cut it and then set out to do the work. In addition to The Golden Empress, the rough yielded eight satellite diamonds, comprising six pear shape Fancy Yellow stones—the largest being 21.34 carats— and two brilliant round stones. www.graffdiamonds.com

RR: We have, as every year important and big events from extravagant Indian weddings to world’s most important companies’ incentive meetings, but due to guest privacy we cannot name them as you might understand. On the other hand food and beverage wise we keep creating new concepts and services to raise the bar even further. We are the first and the only hotel in Istanbul, and for sure in Turkey, that serves a full glutenfree menu at the restaurants and in room dining. We understand today’s travellers’ need of nutrition and wellbeing. We have been using local, fresh, seasonal and organic products at our kitchens for a long time now, and it is time to focus on more specific needs. At our world famous brunch with more than 250 items on Sundays we feature a special corner, ‘Ark of Taste Products’, where the principal objective is to rediscover seasonal products and give value to the extraordinary food heritage of cultures, history and traditions from Turkey. At the moment we have 32 products varying from Smoked Circassian Cheese from the Marmara

region to Kastamonu Pastrami. Another special product we do in house is Baklava. We have our own Baklava chefs from Gaziantep, the land of Baklava. We produce everything in house and we keep creating new types of baklava flavours, chestnut, coffee and rose, only to mention some of them. WLW: Do you have any expansion or redevelopment plans to ensure the hotel remains at the forefront of Turkish hospitality? RR: Several changes will take place in our hotel within 2015. The days are changing, guest expectations are differing and various hotels are opening in Istanbul. We must adapt to the time and make some enhancements to keep our number one position. In fact, in the background there are works going on for the last one and a half years from the pipes to the fire extinguishing system which our guests do not feel. Being an iconic luxury landmark hotel, we strive to create innovative concepts to make our guests even happier. Our vision for the coming years is to be in the “Wish List” of every target traveller. We don’t copy any other competitors, actually we want to be copied which means we are the market leaders and this is what we are. WLW: Çırağan Palace Kempinski Istanbul was recognised as the World’s Leading Hotel by the World Travel Awards in 2014. How did it feel to take this prestigious honour, and how will it help the marketing of the property moving forward?

RR: Our guests and industry leaders keep honouring us with countless prestigious accolades all year round. These recognitions are of utmost importance because they are objective and directly evaluated by our audience. We were extremely happy and honoured to have received the World Travel Awards in 2014, for the second time in a row. This award is for sure a confirmation of our dedication to quality and positions Çırağan Palace Kempinski as, being one of the world’s best hotels. WLW: In what ways could the Turkish government further assist tourism in one of the fastest growing markets in the world? RR: For a destination to grow, the most crucial factor is accessibility, having direct flights. In this sense, Turkish Airlines is doing a great job. Istanbul has become a hub and a meeting point. It is very easy to fly to Istanbul from many destinations around the globe. Turkey is a fantastic country with an ancient history of four great empires with all kind of tourism possibilities which a very few countries have; culture, in terms of seasons, religious routes, and nature.
