A Taste of Glory at the World Championships? It is not only Team SA from these parts who will be going to Languedoc, France, in October for the World Blind Tasting Championships. Two Franschhoek gentlemen have tasted their way into Team Zimbabwe. We know them as Admire Wakwa, the Junior Wine Studio Manager at Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines and Billet Magara, Tasting Room Manager at Pasarene Winery. When Admire, a qualified auto electrician, came to South Africa in 2009, his first job was as a gardener in Riebeek Kasteel. Fate guided him to a barman position in a restaurant, auspiciously opposite the Mullineux Winery. On his birthday, Admire tasted a Kloof Street Chenin and his life changed. He had found his passion. Wine education was on the cards and he studied through the Cape Wine Academy and the UK-based Wine and Spirits Education Trust. He gained fine dining experience and when Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines opened a tasting room in Franschhoek in 2016, he applied for a position as a Wine Host. He was accepted and soon promoted to Admire Wakwa and Billet Magara

And then the winemaker said, “This is my Lamborghini.” I could not deny its distinct curves and overwhelming sense of purpose. Quite simply, it was the most expensive item on the estate. Then, with proper pomp and circumstance, I was introduced to her Bucher wine press, aka the ‘Lamborghini’. Like its namesake it offers formidable performance. With a pressure of only 1 Bar, grapes can be squeezed to the point of just splitting the skins allowing the flow of clear, much prized ‘free run juice’. This is what’s used by Dr Riana Hall of Rudera in Stellenbosch’s Jonkershoek Valley to produce her iconic Chenins. On a cold August morning I was warmed by the subtle intensity of flavours of her De Tradisie 2011 and Robusto 2013 Chenin Blancs. These are not young wines. Seven and five years old, respectively, they are straw yellow

Coffee man Walking towards the entrance of the Big Dog Café the same thought always pops into my head: I wish that aroma could be bottled! The aroma in question varies a bit; sometimes it’s a bit fruitier and sometimes more chocolatey, but it’s always enticing. Regulars will know that the source of the aroma is the Terbodore Coffee Roastery that one passes on the way to the café. The roastery is the domain of head roaster Jommo Nkunika. Only water your plants when the soil has dried out to at least one centimetre deep. The giving part of looking after Verbena’s is in deadheading their spent blooms, if of course you want more blooms. They are quite fussy about expending more energy putting out fresh blooms while old blooms are still scattered about so if you snip the old ones off they’ll respond in kind by replacing them. Verbena works well in hanging baskets, pots, rockeries or garden beds so why not pick some up, in your favourite colour, next time you pop into your local garden centre? With colours ranging from mauve, purple and pink to apricot, red and even some bi-coloured ones, there is something magical waiting to fill that spot in your garden.
The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just the body, but the soul.
A garden is a grand teacher. It teaches patience and careful watchfulness; it teaches industry and thrift; above all it teaches entire trust.

Can rooibos boost athletes’ performance? One of the hottest topics in sport and exercise science is the role that natural herbs can play in enhancing athletic performance. Already known for its many health benefits, Rooibos tea will be put through its paces over the next few months when a team of scientists from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) and the Prime Human Performance Institute in Durban will test the extent to which the tea could aid sportsmen and -women. for usage in elite sports where every percentage

“We’ve created more space – just for you!” These were the words of pastoral couple, Richard and Jolene Wade with the recent launch of the extended church building at Shofar Franschhoek. Although he doesn’t live in Franschhoek Norman says “I always find something interesting to read in the Tatler!” Norman, who’s Israeli-born, has called South Africa home for several decades. You might have guessed it, but ‘Yes’ love had something to do with it! Norman met his future wife, Serena, on the kibbutz where he lived while she was in Israel learning Hebrew. Love blossomed and he followed her back to SA. Not too surprisingly Norman, who is fluent in Hebrew, specialises in tours from Israel to South Africa. Over the course of a number of phone conversations we soon discovered a shared love of history. When Norman let me know that he and Serena would be spending a weekend in Franschhoek, we agreed to meet for coffee. Both coffee and conversation flowed freely. Amongst other things Norman shared with me some interesting

Tourism drives job creation Take the bus to the tram in the Western Cape Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities, recently reiterated that: “tourism plays a major role in our ability to deliver on our key objectives of growing the economy and creating new jobs, which is why it was selected as one of the focus sectors in our Project Khulisa economic growth strategy. We’ve seen over 38 000 new jobs created between 2013 and 2017, and tourism’s contribution to the province’s bottom line through Gross Value Added grew by 11.5% in 2017, on top of 15.5% growth seen in 2016.” In the Western Cape economy, tourism is responsible for creating a combined total of 300 000 jobs, while 1 in 23 people in South Africa are employed in the

Business Leadership TONY FROST
At the changing of the seasons We are living in transformative times and have lived through these transformations over the past 3 or 4 decades in our country. These events and transformations are at the same time harrowing, yet exhilarating; historical and yet intensely personal; unpredictable and yet certain. When such tumultuous change is happening all around, uncertainty and insecurity will almost certainly be present. The one critical ingredient we all needed and prayed for was strong, purposeful, values-driven leadership. We have not always had the benefit of this – to the detriment of all. I vividly remember suggesting to my boss at the time of the whites only referendum called by F W de Klerk in 1992 to decide whether to continue or not with the reform path that we should pray for guidance, each of us individually and collectively. He agreed and so we invited all senior executives in the group and others who wished to attend to join us in the canteen. We stood in circle and he turned to me and said,” Tony, please lead us in prayer for our country!” It was an incredible experience! There we were, all colours, all creeds and a multiplicity of beliefs praying for guidance for ourselves and for our country. We were not the only company to do this and for our generation it was one of many nail-biting experiences we had to deal with. The challenge was always to try to find common ground without causing affront to anyone by our actions and/or words. A tightrope indeed. We were living through a time where much, maybe even most, of what we had to deal with was way outside the realm of ‘normal’ management. We knew that what we did or didn’t do would have a pretty direct bearing on the direction our country would take. We knew that it was essential that we do all we could to foster understanding and reconciliation. It was really only at the workplace that average South Africans met and conducted their daily business side by side, shoulder to shoulder in an environment that was hostile to this even being considered! At the beginning of the eighties everything was still totally segregated: toilets, canteens, training courses, even payrolls. By the end of the eighties a great deal had been desegregated. The most difficult thing though was to deal with the
sharply and deeply entrenched attitudes at all levels and across all social barriers. These things are hard to believe today. We have come a long way. We still have a long way to go. The Zuma years put us back decades. But it is spring – the changing of the seasons. A time

This is something all of us can do – easily, without effort and with such positive consequences. Let your smile reach into the heart of a stranger. Building and uniting the country is not only the job of President Ramaphosa. If we care about South Africa; if we love this place we call home; if we want our children to grow up in a non-racist, non-violent, non-discriminatory environment where all can share in the fruits of success then we owe it to ourselves, our families, our communities, our companies and our country to do something about it! Good staff relationships are just as important as pay There are strikes seemingly all the time and usually the dispute is over wage increases and benefits. On the other side of the coin, when employers speak, they often talk of the country’s skills deficit and labour laws. Recent research in KwaZulu-Natal has highlighted that there are equally important issues for both employees and employers. As it has been shown that a contented labour force is a productive one, it is worthwhile taking a moment to understand this new research. Of the employees surveyed, only 6% cited low pay as their main gripe. Others mentioned “better jobs found” (6%), “a new job with less hours worked” (8%), while 10% left to pursue better education and 16% felt their current job was too dangerous. 46%

often leaves the worker with only small amounts of money for themselves. The fact remains however that by far the largest
single cause of people quitting their jobs involves a breakdown in the relationship with their employer. So what do workers want to see in the relationship with their employer? • Being treated fairly and given equal opportunity ranked high with workers. • Receiving recognition for their efforts is also important. • Lower paid workers spoke approvingly of being respected in their jobs, despite their low pay. • Helping employees with training and education, employing their family members and helping financially with their children’s education were also raised. And what do employers want? For employers their criteria for employing people were that employees needed to be positive, punctual and reliable. There is thus a split between employer and employee expectations – one looks mainly to relationships and the other just wants to get the job done efficiently. It makes sense therefore for you to explore how to satisfy both your employees’ needs and those of your business. Understanding what is at the heart of both employee and employer aspirations will greatly help in establishing a stable, productive workforce.
16 | October 2018 and how many people attended? The smallest one? The biggest event would be the Olive Festival, which back in the day saw up to 15 000 people attend, but the most complex event I handle remains The Franschhoek Bastille Festival. The smallest would be Summer & Winter Wines which are designed to be niche events, hosting a maximum of 750 people. Most festivals seem to have marquees. What is their cost range? This is a very good question as the public are unaware of the rising cost of events. At our Franschhoek festivals our marquee costs range between R600 000 – R850 000. Artists Behaving Badly Artists in general are unusual people. The energy of pushing boundaries, new ways of seeing and thinking, and doing things no one has done before is bound to spill over into everyday expression. Handel’s rages were legendary. His ear was so sensitive that he couldn’t bear to hear an orchestra tuning up. Consequently, musicians were required to tune well ahead of performances. La Motte exhibits ‘Ink on Paper’
Cape Town City Ballet put on a production of the Mozart and Salieri ballet at Artscape for a few nights in August. The Franschhoek Culture Vultures had heard that the previous production of this Marc Goldberg choreographed ballet was wonderful and so declared it an ideal outing for the end of winter. Attendance was secured by booking very good seats in Row O (they were given pensioners’ rates), making sure they had refreshments, counting out an appropriate number of Leopard’s Leap bubbly and wine, arranging for a bus and selecting warm evening jackets from wardrobes. At 18h00 on the appointed day, after everyone had boarded, Patrick pointed the bus in the direction of the N1 and Cape Town. He stopped the bus right in front of Artscape where the group alighted
