Franschhoek Theatre:

There is light in construction tunnel The Franschhoek Theatre at Franschhoek High School is steadily becoming a reality. Construction has practically been completed and interior fit-out is progressing at a pace. A very welcome R12 000 donation towards the project was received last month from local band Uncorked. It was their performance fee from the Bastille Festival and the generous band members passed it on to facilitate the completion of the project. They ceremonially handed a cheque to the school’s head boy, Luvo Gcuku, at the theatre on the school grounds. In another theatre-related happening there was great excitement among the Grade 11 learners at Franschhoek High School when their tourism teacher, Miss Steynberg, took them for a look-see to the

Cellar Chat Mark Tanner

Some time back, at a London showcase for South African wines, I found myself chatting with David Nieuwoudt of Cederberg Wines. With his cellar situated some 1000m above sea level, the highest cellar in the country, David has challenges when it comes to wine making. The quality and international popularity of his wines bear testimony to his ability to handle this unique ‘terroir’.

wines, such as are made in Canada and Germany. Canada has its Ice Wine and Germany its Eiswein. The former is made in limited quantities by numerous producers and, after winning a Grand Prix d’Honneur in France, has placed that country on the wine map. Germany’s Eiswein is made from frozen grapes picked late. As water in the grapes turn to ice the remaining sugars become increasingly concentrated.

Our equivalent would be

our Noble Late Harvest wines; ‘noble’ indicating that the grapes had contracted the noble rot fungus (botrytis cinerea), which also reduces the fruit to a raisin-like appearance and with concentrated sweetness.

Big plans for microgreens The chances are good that when you visit a fine restaurant or grocery store you’ll find microgreens among the vegetables and herbs on your plate or in the display fridges. These small, delicate greens are increasingly used to add flavour, texture and colour to all manner of dishes, whether as a garnish or ingredient. Microgreens are rich in phytonutrients and other health-promoting compounds. In most cases micro greens are more nutrient-dense than their mature counterparts, so a little goes a long way. If

Absa Top 10 Pinotage 2018 winners announced After much anticipation the 2018 Absa Top 10 Pinotage trophies were presented on 15 August, commemorating 22 years of Absa’s involvement with the Pinotage Association, and setting the benchmark for South Africa’s most successful “indigenous” wine variety. Two Franschhoek wineries, Môreson and Allée Bleue, The 2018 judging panel consisted of Neil Ellis of Neil

Ellis Wines (chairman), Samarie Smith, Benguela Cove’s Brand and Business Manager, winemaker Francois Haasbroek, wine educator Nomonde Kubheka and Francois Rautenbach, wine buyer for Singita. A record number of 161 entries were received for the competition. The Top 10 winners consist mostly of wines produced by winemakers with solid Pinotage track records, all with a common goal: to produce the ultimate Pinotage ‘masterpiece’. The 2018 Absa Top 10 Pinotage winners are: • Allée Bleue Black Series Old Vine Pinotage 2016 (WO Piekenierskloof, Winemaker Van Zyl du Toit), • Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage 2015 (WO Stellenbosch, Winemaker Anri Truter),

Help2read helps children from disadvantaged communities learn to read. It is the sensible answer to the question, “What are we going to do about the fact that 78% of Grade 5 learners, between the ages of 9 and 10 years old, have not mastered basic reading skills?” This literacy development organisation aims to address low levels of literacy in South Africa, focussing on primary school learners. Based on the one-on-one reading helper model of the UK Charity ‘Beanstalk’, help2read was founded in 2005. They started at Muizenberg Junior School and have since spread to other schools and recently reached the Franschhoek Valley.

CELIA MCGUINNESS

How the new travel allowances affect you and are they working?

The week of 18 July is always a huge moment in the life of South Africans and probably many other people and places around the world. The 18th is, of course, the birth date of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. Thinking of him and his amazing life usually gives me pause for thought. He had many virtues; he was brave almost to a fault; he sacrificed his life for his country; he had a very clear vision of the kind of country we should be; he was artistically articulate; his ethics were beyond reproach; he always put others before himself. But the most striking of his virtues to me was his incredible humility. He never allowed himself to get ahead of himself and was dismissive of the PR around him. His focus was always on others and on the country. In short, he was the kind of leader we wanted to follow and the kind of leader we all should aspire to be. Was he charismatic? Of course he was. We all know that! however,

charisma,

from

self-

aggrandising posing, nor an effort to position himself as more important than others. His charisma came from his ability to really listen and to focus on whoever it was that he was with at the time. He, like other great leaders I have had the privilege of meeting, made you feel that you and your opinions were important to him and that he valued you as a person. This, too, is perhaps where his humility came from. It is also this humility that gave him the capacity to draw others to his great cause – reconciliation and the building of a new country at peace with itself. Leaders can learn so much from this approach to leadership. All of us have the duty as we grow and mature to try to be role models for the next generation. Not all of us were lucky enough to have the privilege of strong and healthy role models as we grew through our teens into early adulthood. But that should not be proffered as an excuse for not role-modelling for those that look up to us. Adam Rippon, the American figure skater who won a medal at the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, had this to say in a March edition of Time magazine: “...if you feel you didn’t have a role model growing up, then act

everything as leaders. It shows strength to openly depend on others to get the job done. There is no such thing as individual success. There is only team success. There is no leader without a team. If there is no team there is no leader. Humility is part of the battle of leadership. It is easy, and extremely seductive, to assume the mantel of individual success when the team has done something special. But doing so is an almost certain route to losing the respect and support of the team. A much better approach is to immerse oneself in the team and let the team characters absorb and accept the public admiration for a job well done. Sporting teams are beginning to learn the power of putting team members in front, while the team management supports and mentors them in this role. The power of this approach is almost infinite. The more members of the team that recognise their role in leadership, the stronger the team. The leader will be freed up to spend more time strategizing, encouraging, mentoring, moulding, nurturing the team to be stronger and stronger. The more the leader recognises that success is a team effort the more successful he or she will become. It is not possible to bully a team into sustainable success. Like a plant, this comes from continuous nurturing and care. It comes from the recognition that one’s role as a leader is short-term, fragile and proscribed. One of the primary accountabilities for all leaders is to build, nurture and grow the next generation of leaders. Mandela recognised this and stepped down when he felt his time had come. He did not stop mentoring, encouraging and role-modelling after his time as President. But he did this from the side-lines in his normal deeply personal and humble way. Leaders can learn so much from this lifetime of service!

For the new tax year changes were made to how we are reimbursed for business travelling expenses. Why did SARS make changes and to which type of travel allowance? Travel allowances have been around for a long time. Initially, they gave considerable benefits to people earning salaries as the fringe benefits tax was less than the economic benefit. SARS in trying to close this gap have made many alterations to travel allowances which have made them quite complex. There are three types of allowance compensating employees for business travel: 1. Where the employer provides a company-owned car for the employee 2. A travel allowance is given to some staff members whereby the employee uses his or her own vehicle 3. A reimbursement of business travel expenses where the employee is paid a rate per kilometre travelled. In practice, the first two methods involve a considerable amount of administration and estimation. For example, if a company pays out a travel allowance, it has to work out the cost of a vehicle and the running costs. Employees are given allowances according to their job status and thus the employer will usually offer a different allowance to, say, a junior manager versus a senior manager. The employer also has to work out how much business mileage the employee will do and deduct PAYE accordingly. The employee has to keep a logbook and has to complete the travel allowance section when doing his or her Income Tax return. The third method has until now only applied if the employee did 12 000 kilometres or less business travel during the tax year. The company paid a per-kilometre rate, usually the SARS rate, currently R3.61 per kilometre. If the SARS rate was paid, the process was simple and no PAYE was deducted. If however the employer paid more than the SARS rate or paid out an actual allowance, then the difference was taxed and PAYE was deducted. The problem with this third method was it was limited

SARS kilometre rate (i.e. to do away with the first two methods above). This will considerably simplify things for both sides as both employer and employee will have less administration workload. It will also make assessing taxes easier for SARS. Examples best illustrate this: Example 1: SARS rate of R3.61 per kilometre used to reimburse travel expenses. An employee does 30 000 kilometres business travel in the 2018/2019 year He gets paid out: R108 300. (30 000 kilometres X 3.61 a kilometre) PAYE: Nil. Note: the employee needs to keep a logbook to justify the 30,000 kilometres business travel. Example 2: The employee does 30 000 kilometres business travel and is paid R5 per kilometre plus is given an allowance of R10 000. PAYE is deducted on the difference between R5-00 and the SARS rate of R3-61 thus 30 000 X R1-39 = R41 700 Plus R10 000 Total R51,700 is added to the employee’s taxable income and PAYE is deducted as per the tax tables. Note: As part of the PAYE process, Skills Development Levy (SDL) and Unemployment Insurance (UIF) are also deducted. The employee will have to complete the travel allowance section in his or her Income Tax return and will either get a refund or have to pay in additional tax. In the event that the employee gets a refund of some or all the PAYE paid, the company will not be able to get back the additional SDL and UIF it has paid (the company picks up half of the UIF cost and all of the SDL cost). This is because there is no mechanism to claw back these amounts if the employee gets a refund when doing his or her Income Tax return. In summary, the SARS revised allowance is clearly easier for all parties. However employees will almost certainly resist using this method, particularly the more senior employees who will see their travel allowance eroded. Time will tell how successful the revised travel allowance will be.

are a mysterious older man they nickname “The Moth” who flutters about them ineffectually, and a slightly dubious character called “The Darter” who is straight out of Dickens. In fact, the first third of the book is pure Dickens as Nathaniel is introduced to the underside of postwar London. With him we experience the mysterious shapes of the eddies and banks of the nighttime Thames and its canals. We are also introduced to the raucous world of greyhound racing, alive with criminality and smuggling and shady deals. Nathaniel and his sister grow up quickly in the sinister atmosphere that surrounds The Darter and develop their own survival skills. There is enough danger to keep the narrative moving, with the children being separated after a kidnapping episode and Nathaniel being introduced to sex by the alluring Agnes. In a series of stunning scenes they make love in deserted houses that are being rehabilitated after the Blitz.

might not have been a spy. Her life is a riddle. There are only a few clues from glimpses of her childhood, a photograph of a tattoo on her arm, a voice recording of a man who is being interrogated. The search for an answer takes the 28 year-old Nathaniel to the countryside of Suffolk where, as in all good folk tales, he encounters various enigmatic figures who might know the truth: The wonderfully named Mrs. Malakite with her broken memories. The equally wonderfully named Marsh Felon who had befriended his mother when she was a girl, and then reappears later – first as a genial BBC nature broadcaster who becomes her lover, and finally as a fellow spy and possible betrayer.

There had been much talk on the entertainment front about the Joshua Harmon Broadway hit Significant Other. It was scheduled for a run at The Fugard Theatre with the theatre’s resident director Greg Karvellas at the helm. The cast too were a pick of South African talent. The Franschhoek Culture Vultures were itching to get tickets and to see what the fuss was about. Bookings

Nathaniel gradually learns that “No-one really understands another’s life or even death.” All that he finds is a hand drawn map that contains enigmatic clues that can never be solved. What he does learn is that his personal loss of his parents could be linked to greater events in the world like a massacre in Yugoslavia. “I know how to fill in a story from a grain of sand or a fragment of a discovered truth,” says Nathaniel. In the world of espionage and childhood secrets every word or sentence has a special meaning. “The fragments of discovered truth” remind us of another author, John le Carré, who is also a master at concealing and revealing the truth in the secretive world of espionage. However, in the end, any summary or comparison of “Warlight” cannot do justice to the graceful, bewitching style of Ondaatje. The man who tied it all together for me He’d come pelting up the fir tree-lined avenue from the school gate on his faded red Vespa, slowing just enough before each speed bump to prevent the pudding bowl helmet from slipping skew on his head. Suit tails flapping in his slipstream above the wellworn trumpet case strapped to the pillion behind him. Beatle boots. Rakishly swept back black hair streaked with grey sat atop a jaunty but diminutive frame accentuating a pot-belly neither proudly nor self-consciously. As is typical of many musicians his mastery of time barely extended beyond what took place in bars – not those ones, the ones inhabited by clefs, minims, crotchets, quavers and incidentals. So while his realworld time management strayed on the side of tardy, his presence and approach was moderated by an effete and cool air: Late, but never rude. It’s always stuck with me. Like old school jazz. Fiery, yet infinitely patient: An educator in the etymological sense; one who reaches in to ignite curiosity and lead it out as passion. The somewhat unkind, but often apt adage ‘those who can’t, teach’ applied not one jot here. He was a musician and trumpeter of sensational talent, blinding technical skill wrapped with the looks-so-easy X factor reserved

it was the whole grade, but I was shown the basics of how the lips form an embouchure, given a trumpet mouthpiece, some exercises and told to return in a week to show any signs of interest or progress. Most of the lads simply returned the kit, while I was sat down and given an E flat horn. While the khaki-clad cadet band bugled, lefted and righted in formation up and down the rugby fields on sweltering Friday afternoons in preparation for army conscription, the fate of all young white South African men born to the era, we – members of the celebrated (for good reason, I might add) brass band – sat in relative comfort in the adjacent music hall. We were being taught to swing – no, not that. The groove. Where to play notes – always in time, but early (urgent, rock ‘n roll), bang on time (military) or late (insouciant and cool, jazz). This is ephemeral, elusive to the easily distracted young mind. But we were seduced regardless with patience and passion and a sincere desire for us to get it. Enjoy it. Brass

be either food, nectar, shelter or medicine. And beauty. You are allowed to plant for the sake of beauty too! Your roses should be covered in reddish new growth by now. This is the sign that you should start with the

Just like that it is Spring again! Rain has fallen, dams are filling and there is exuberance all around. All of nature is alive and thankful for the rain. Whether any late rain will fall and fill our dams to capacity we don’t know, but what we do know is that the worst of the drought crisis has been averted. A combination of near average rainfall and the collective water saving efforts of the people has put us in a much better position than last year. We now know that drought is a reality in the Western Cape. All future landscaping decisions will have to be made with this in mind. Available irrigation water should be targeted towards beneficial plants – be it for food, bees, other insects, wildlife, privacy or shade. Useless expanses of grass must be allowed to go brown in summer. I love what is happening on the design front – xeriscaping has matured, and we now see beautiful installations in public spaces that can survive and thrive without any irrigation supplementation. September is not a month for procrastination. It is probably the busiest month on our gardening calendar. Seeds must be sown, bulbs planted, lawns dressed

and

scarified,

mulch

applied,

compost

strewn, fertiliser spread – the list goes on. Now is the time to call for some outside help with these more mundane tasks so that you can focus on the exciting ones. Exciting tasks like planning the Christmas lunch straight from the garden. Foodscaping has become a thing. Try to focus on beneficial plants throughout the garden. Because of our limited resources a plant must

fungal diseases, treat against beetles, caterpillars and other defoliating pests as required and pinch back Roses should be given a

finger pruning towards the end of the month. Pinch out a third of the new shoots between thumb and forefinger. This ensures a lasting flower flush and leads to more leaf cover. The vegetable garden is obviously where you will spend most of your energy this month. All sorts of summer veggies can be sown now. Try to find some interesting seeds and grow your own seedlings. Nursery seedlings are a fast and easy option, but we cannot shy away from the impact that the growing methods and consumables used have on the environment. Nothing beats the taste, look and satisfaction of your own tomatoes grown from

The famine in my garden continues – bad planning has us running to the grocery store for most of our veggies. Glorious Gerbera – perfect for the patio The icy touch of winter is melting away. Bright green buds and the emergence of new leaves add freshness to the world outside. It’s the time of plentiful opportunities and renewed energy, and, to make the most of it, you have to heed the call of the garden. Patio gardening is a rising trend, and for good reason. The patio forms the perfect bridge between the comforts of the indoors, and the beauty of the outdoors. It has the unique ability to encompass the best of both worlds. For this purpose, indoor Gerberas (otherwise known as Barberton daisies) are ideal. Garden centres have realised how popular these bright blooms are, and have responded to the demand. “Pre-made” whole blooms are available for purchase, already potted and arranged into sets.
