Renewable Energies Expansion Campaign By 2025, SWM wants to cover all of Munich’s consumption with green energy generated in its own plants. Munich intends to be the first city worldwide with more than one million inhabitants to reach this ambitious goal. All in all, we will earmark a budget of ₏ 9 billion for the expansion of renewable energies in the period until 2025. SWM uses a wide range of natural resources, i.e. water, wind, sun, geothermal power, biomass. SWM invests in Munich and the region, but also across Europe at suitable locations.

Power consumption of Munich: 7.5 billion kWh per year.

Today, the share of green electricity is 12.2 %. This corresponds to the requirements of 370,000 households in Munich.

Including all projects already in the realization stage, the share of green electricity will come to 37 %. This is significantly more than the requirements of all of Munich’s approximately 800,000 households as well as the underground and tram systems.

All already initiated or executed projects prevent the emission of approx. 5 million tonnes of CO2 per year.

Virtual Power Plant – Management of decentralized energy supplies

Virtual Power Plant: A network of several small-scale power plants which are pooled and operated like a single system. The virtual power plant helps to meet electricity demand based on green electricity production. The virtual power plant enables reliable and cost-effective operation of small-scale power plants.
