Scream magazine

Page 1

The masthead for this magazine is titled ‘scream’; this is also a famous horror movie, which could be why they have also named the magazine this. Additionally, the word ‘scream’ is often associated with being scared as this is what we do. The text is in a vibrant red which signifies blood as it also looks as though blood is dripping from the title. The font itself looks quite it is supposed to imitate someone writing it with a paintbrush or even their hands. This adds a ‘fear factor’ to the magazine and highlights the horror genre.

The selling line of the magazine is featured above the masthead; this makes it clear and easy to see. Additionally it is in black text in a white box, again making it clear. The audience will be able to tell what magazine it is by this line as it would be something featured on every cover. It is also very memorable due to the rhyme at the end; again making it identifiable.

The cover lines are in a bright yellow and the text is capitalised; this makes it clear and easy to read. Additionally, the yellow links in with the colour of the creatures eyes on the main image. Under the cover line is a description of what the cover line is about; this is in white font and standout against the darker background. Accompanied by the cover lines are also images; this makes the front cover more interesting as there is more than one image. This would attract the reader more as it is visual as well as informative.

There is also a ‘Plus’ section on the front cover. This isn’t always featured on covers which makes Scream more appealing as it gives more information on the cover than most magazines do. This allows the reader to find out what else is featured in this issue. The use of the blood and capitalised ‘Plus’ attracts the audience’s attention but does not take away from the main selling points of the magazine cover. The information under is slightly smaller and is in different font; which would make the readers pick the magazine up to take a closer look.

The main cover line is in a bold white text which stands out against the darker background; the white also links in with the other cover lines. Additionally, the font is the same as the movie poster; this makes it more recognisable and will attract more reader’s as they can easily spot the film. The hand next to the cover line is almost like a logo for the film which makes it easy to identify.

The main image shows a picture of a humanlike creature with grey skin and cuts over her face; this alone looks scary and portrays the horror genre. The use of the chain next to the face suggests she is coming out from a trapped door or something that is supposed to stay locked this hints at what the film could be about. Additionally, the hand pictured suggests she is climbing out from somewhere which reinforces that she isn’t supposed to be there. The actual image is a replica of a point in the movie, which could entice the audience to buy the magazine. The yellow in the eyes is the only colour that is shown on the image; this could signify a devil like creature. Additionally, this brings the audiences focus straight to the main image. Even though the colour is only subtle it stands out against the rest of the dark coloured image. The yellow also links in with other parts of the magazine cover; tying it all together.
