Sierra Nevada GCSA An Affiliate Chapter of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America

2 0 12 S C H O L A R S H I P & R E S E A R C H TOURNAMENT NORTH RIDGE COUNTRY CLUB HOST SUPERINTENDENT LARRY JOHNSON, CGCS BY IRENE CLINE

Larry Johnson, CGCS and North Ridge Country Club will host the 2012 Scholarship & Research Tournament for the SNGCSA. North Ridge was built in 1952 and designed by William Francis Bell Sr. who skillfully incorporated frequent changes in elevation to produce an interesting course that is fun to play. The sloping greens create a challenge even for the best putters. Larry Johnson,

CGCS has been superintendent at North Ridge since 2000. He has a Master of Science degree in Horticulture and a Bachelor of Science degree in Plant Science from the University of California, Davis. Larry manages the course with a crew of eleven to seventeen employees depending on the time of the year. Larry’s work experience includes being the General Manager/

Course Superintendent at Auburn Valley C.C. from 1994 to 2000, being the Superintendent at Gold Hills C.C. from 1992 to 1994 and being the Superintendent at Mather Air Force Base Golf Course from 1987 till 1992. Larry has been a long time member of our association and served on the Board of the Sierra Nevada GCSA for numerous years before serving as (Continued on page 4)

2012 SCHOLARSHIPS This year we have received ten scholarship applications. This is the highest number of applications that our association has ever received. The choices will be difficult as there are many truly great applicants. The Turf Applicants came in from Cal Poly and the UC Riverside Extension Program. There are

four total applicants for individuals who are seeking careers as golf course superintendents. These applicants must be currently in the industry or pursuing continuing education through an accredited institution. All were required to complete and sign the application and submit them by the final date.

The Legacy Program has become extremely popular. We had a total of six applicants this year. To qualify for the program one or more of the applicants parents must have been an SNGCSA member for five or more consecutive years and must be a currently active member in (Continued on page 4)

I think we have all had our first round of heat this year and I can honestly say I missed it…just a little. Summer is here and hopefully the spring weather, aeration and all our crew’s hard work we have prepared our facilities for the few months we have coming. With this comes a reminder that our Research and Scholarship Tournament is around the corner. I really look forward to the event and the opportunities that this tournament provides our association in supporting our industry and you our members with scholarships. event at Arbuckle Golf Club you missed a great nine hole facility. The course played great and the highlight for me was watching Vice President Jeremy Payne, awkwardly holding a pistol during our live gun sniffing gun dog demonstration. The dogs were incredible as well. It is amazing how those four legged creatures can sniff out weaponry in the most obscure places. Education is a important part of our meetings. The topics don’t always have to be Golf related to be good topics, but it helps when we have good golf related topics to discuss. So if there is a topic that is near and dear to your heart and you would like to see, feel free and communicate it to the board. We would love to get something lined up at one of our next meetings. president of the association in 2001. This year’s tournament is crucial to the association’s commitment to research for the California Golf Course industry. We have made significant investments to research to date, $10,000 in 2011, and we will continue to strive to improve this with the support of our membership: especially our commercial members. We are hoping to increase that dollar amount for 2012. The event will be full day of fun and will include several special events. We will start off with a breakfast sponsored by Mid Cal Tractor. Everyone will receive great tee prizes sponsored by Syngenta, and then during golf we have a hole in one, sponsored by Sierra Pacific Turf Supply. There will be booths set up for drawings such as the one hosted by Commercial Pump and stations for free samples including Fireball Whiskey. TECH TIPS APPS YOU CAN’T LIVE

Jeremy Payne

I’m going to devote the next few Tech Tips articles to some of my favorite apps for smart phones that every turf manager should know about, if not have on their phone already. And for those that don’t have a smart phone yet, I don’t blame you for trying to resist technology, but I encourage you to give one a shot. You might find more fun and benefits in them than annoyance. These app write-ups don’t come in any particular order, even though I do have my favorites, so I’ll start with SunSeeker. Originally I found out about this app from iTurfApps blog (http://iturfapps.com/sunseeker-appreview), and later learned that it originated as an app for solar panel installers to assist them in finding

the best exposure for placement of the panels. Basically, this app can help immensely with diagnosing shade issues from trees around your turf. The full version of the app (which I recommend) costs a few bucks, but is amazing visual proof for your boss, members, greens committee, or Steve Pajak, to help explain why you might have poorly performing turf conditions due to shade. It can also help you isolate exactly which trees are the problems, or help you select the right few for a gentle thinning of the herd. The app has several different displays: a compass view (which I don’t use much), an aerial view with a Google map layover showing the direction of the sun on a particular area during every hour of daylight, and the 3D view. The 3D view is the most useful. It uses your phone’s camera and overlays arcs of the sun’s travel path. So every hour of the day you can see the position and path of the sun as it relates to what you’re looking at through your camera. What’s more, it shows three arcs: the current day’s path, the summer peak path, and the winter’s lowest path, so you can see the full range of sky the sun travels through throughout the year and be able to

diagnose shade issues during all parts of the year no matter when you go to look at them. This all may be hard to visualize through my writing, but I suggest you visit the above link to the review in the iTurfApps blog, where the author has made a great video showing how to use the app and the benefits. And, as always, feel free to call me up and I’d be happy to walk anyone through getting the app and how to use it, or even give an oncourse demo, possibly in exchange for a round of golf! Enjoy this app, and check back for next newsletter’s article on another great and useful turf app! WILBER’S NEWS B Y D AV E W I L BE R say that our chapter is going to suffer a loss here. Jim, I'm going to miss you, my friend, and my only solace in this whole deal is knowing someone in San Diego and knowing that once a year at the GIS all of us who know you well will do our best to make your head hurt for several mornings. A warm round of applause for Jim. He will certainly be missed. A replacement at Stockton hasn't been named yet. Probably because the members are in too much shock to deal with the situation. Association President, Jeff Couwenhoven is now the new super at The Resort at Squaw Creek in Squaw Valley, CA. Jeff reports liking the winter lasting until May. Ken Wolford has left Lake Wildwood C.C. in Penn Valley. Bill Hamilton, formerly of Silverado C.C. in Napa has been named as the replacement. Mike Kaveney is the new super at Plumas Lake C.C.. Mike takes the reins at Plumas after Gibson Golf took over the scene at his long time post at Sunset Whitney C.C. in Rocklin. A pattern emerges.

Dave Wilber

There's no way for me to start this edition of Wilber's News without going right to the big news in my brain. For the last 7 years Jim Alwine has held down the grass fort at Stockton Golf and C.C. with real panache and a flair for doing all the right things in his own fun way. If you know Jim, you know what I mean. So it came to a big surprise to me when not only did he tell me he was leaving Stockton, but also leaving to head to a new position in the San Diego area. Jim will take the helm at Bernardo Heights C.C. in Rancho Bernardo, California. It was my great pleasure to get to know Jim in various capacities, including working for him on the Sierra Nevada GCSA board. And I have to

A big hat off to Pat Finlan, his staff and all the volunteers that made things happen for the 2012 US Open Golf Championship at The Olympic Club. Lots of SNGCSA members were part of that volunteer operation. There were some gripes from the media about too tough a course setup, but that's to be expected. They have to have something to write about. We are looking for 2013 meeting sites. If you'd like to host a meeting, we'd like to hear from you. Contact myself, Pete Bowman or Irene at the association office. Our Scholarship and Research event at Northridge C.C. (thank you host Super Larry Johnson!) is not to be missed. Bring a foursome and get ready to bid at the auction. Tourney Chair Dave Bermudez has once again brought his efforts to plan a great day. This is an awesome way to show our association activities to the powers that be at your facility.

CALIFORNIA TURF & LANDSCAPE F O U N DA T I O N U P DA T E B Y J I M A L W I N E Thirteen months in existence, the California Turf and Landscape Foundation has shown great progress and potential to lead turfgrass research in the diverse locales of California. At this point, $87,000 has been raised for the foundation, most of which comes directly from Superintendent Chapters, throughout the state. The Sierra Nevada GCSA has deposited $10,000 so far and will present a check to Executive Director, Bruce Williams, CGCS at the July 23 Scholarship and Research Tournament at North Ridge Country Club. These funds are being used to support research conducted by Dr. Jim Baird and the UC Riverside staff. Other public and private researchers will have the opportunity to apply for grants following the recently adopted Research Funding Protocol. CaTLF has also paid for access to the Turfgrass Information Center at Michigan State for all the UC system in turf. Dr. Baird is committed to conducting research well outside the confines of southern California, planning many road trips to courses right in our back yard. The following outlines a portion of the research conducted last year and planned for 2012: Objectives: Conduct regional and climatespecific research for the GCSANC and Sierra Nevada GCSA. Progress: Poa control research on putting greens was conducted at Morgan Creek CC

(Roseville), DarkHorse GC (Auburn), California Golf Club of SF, and Monterey Peninsula CC (MPCC) in 2010. Field Day on Poa control research was held at DarkHorse in June 2011 in conjunction with a Sierra Nevada GCSA monthly meeting. Methiozolin research and demonstrations were continued in 2011 at The Preserve GC, Peter Hay GC, Cypress Point Club, MPCC, Tehama, Bayonet and Blackhorse, Cal Club of SF, San Francisco GC (SFGC), Olympic Club, and Marin CC. Results of these experiments and similar experiments conducted in Southern California at The Los Angeles CC, Bel-Air CC, Shady Canyon GC, The Bridges at Rancho Santa Fe, Bonita GC, and Barona Creek GC are being compiled for publication in Weed Technology. Research Planned in 2012: PoaCure (methiozolin) preemergence control on bentgrass greens at Peter Hay. Bentgrass cultivar tolerance to PoaCure at Poppy Hills GC and Monarch Dunes GC. Long-term conversion of Poa on greens using PoaCure at Cypress Point Club and Granite Bay GC. Poa control on fairways using PoaCure at MPCC and Marin CC. PoaCure carrier volume study at Olympic Club. Poa population study at SFGC.

Jim Alwine

Research TBD by mutual agreements with Research Committees of the GCSANC and Sierra Nevada GCSA (e.g., pink snow mold fungicide trial, nematicide trial). Other research pending includes salinity management, carbon sequestering potential, and of course, drought tolerant varieties. The SNGCSA S&R Tournament donates 50% of revenue directly to the CaTLF to support turfgrass research. Remember that potential when the opportunity to bid in the auction or to buy raffle tickets is upon you. To keep updated on the Foundation, visit www.CaTLF.com, the new website that is evolving. Also, follow on Facebook for frequent statewide updates on golf industry happenings, research news, and educational opportunities.

FROM THE FIELD

JEFF JENSEN, GCSAA FIELD STAFF, SOUTHWEST REGION How time flies! Summer is here. I hope all of our members are enjoying the good weather, spending time with friends and Jeff Jensen family and even getting out to play the occasional round of golf. I’d like to give a shout out to CGCS Pat Finlen and his entire staff at The Olympic Club in San Francisco. As you know, Pat hosted the 2012 U.S. Open Championship. If you missed one of his “Behind the Scenes” presentations earlier this year, you missed out on a fabulous look at the infrastructure and preparation required to host a

major championship. Congratulations on a job well done and thank you for showing the world a glimpse of the quality of golf on the West Coast. I recently had the opportunity to attend a Southern California GCSA Assistants Meeting at Whittier Narrows Golf Course in Rosemead. I came away impressed with the knowledge and dedication to the golf business that these young assistants possess. They are the future of our business. With that in mind, I urge all of our superintendents to make sure that your assistants are involved with your local GCSAA Chapter. If they are not current members, take them to an education/golf event and get them signed

up. It’s a great reward for all of their hard work and it will provide them with additional leadership, communication and networking skills. I realize that it is often difficult to do this with shrinking crew sizes, but finding a way to make it a priority will pay dividends for you and your facility in the future. Lastly, I have been fielding some questions on why GCSAA changed the dates of the National Championship and Golf Classic so that they coincide with the GCSAA Education Conference and Golf Industry Show in San Diego Feb. 4 -8, 2013. The move comes as a result of surveys and feedback from members, chapters and industry participants. Respondents indi(Continued on page 9)

The team atmosphere provided at the symposium created dialogue and useful discussion. Various strategies/topics discussed included Chapter Financial Health, Membership Retention, Field Staffing and Key Activities within GCSAA in 2012. I found it very interesting to review and understand the finances of how the GCSAA is supported and where it allocates funds. As most of us know, it’s a revolving door where revenue is reinvested

LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE CONTINUED FROM PAGE 11

mainly comes from membership dues, user fees and industry and sponsorships. All of this is strategically planned and executed on an annual basis, which leads to the success of the organization. Membership Recruitment and Retention were also discussed. As of now, the GCSAA has 18,480 members and 100 Chapters. In order for us to be successful, we need to continually grow and advertise the value of the membership. This open forum gave attendees the opportunity to discuss successes and challenges in the critical area of association management. Some important takeaways that I thought were important included maximizing the true benefits of the membership, looking for common threads in reasons why members leave associations, communicating the value of the GSCAA to clients and GM’s and building an Assistant Superintendent Board of Participants. Field staffing was another hot topic at the meeting. We were able to review the methods and vision of

the GCSAA Field Representative initiative. There are currently nine field staff regions. With this being fairly new, the GCSAA is in the process of hiring to fill the role of some of these regions. Our Association falls into the Southwest Region. Jeff Jenson, who was hired back in February, is the Sierra Nevada’s new field representative. I had the opportunity to speak with Jeff at the symposium. We discussed his plans going forward which included focusing on relationship building, assisting chapters with their public relations needs and creating awareness among superintendents on issues that are effecting day to day operations. The goal of the GCSAA and this position is to improve communication between the association and affiliated chapters to advance the careers of its members. There are also several activities and reoccurring items within the GCSAA on an annual basis that were discussed at the symposium. I was actually surprised to see how well organized and how much support and planning goes

into the scheduling of these events. Going forward, some of these items include: July: Nominations for the GCSAA Board of Directors August: Golf Industry Show housing opens, Submittal of Distinguished Service Award Applications October: Golf Industry Show registration opens December: RSVP for chapter events at the Golf Industry Show As you can see from above, there are a lot of components that make the GCSAA what it is today. This definitely is a team effort and takes support from all the members and hard working employees of the association. It’s extremely important that we utilize the resources and knowledge that the GCSAA provides. As a team, we can collectively continue to advance our profession and be the best we can possibly be.
