Greetings! It is my honor to be writing this President’s Message today. Thank you all for your support. I will my do my upmost to reward your faith in me. Thanks to Kurtis Wolford our Past President for his hard work this past year. We were most fortunate for his leadership and commitment. We look forward to his continued efforts with the Water Conservation Task Force. Back in December 2009, I wrote another Presidents Message previewing my upcoming first term. Many of the challenges I wrote about then are still relevant today. Membership and advertising were our main sources of revenue and still are. Getting superintendents to attend meetings and providing value to our affiliates is just as tricky as ever. One area where we continue to raise A LOT of monies is the scholarship and research tournament Thanks to all of you who have contributed merchandise or services. Thanks to all of you who have purchased auction

items and attended the events. A special thanks to Dave Bermudez for his hard work in making the event what it is today. Thank you all. You have contributed in helping turf students continue on their path to becoming golf course superintendents. You have given the children of our members a helping hand in paying for an incredibly expensive education. And have donated monies to further the research of turfgrass in the states of California and Nevada. Thank you. We have a great lineup of meetings in January: the very popular Irrigation and Mechanic seminars at The Ridge and we are planning to have a blast at TopGolf in Roseville. And don’t forget about the California room in Orlando if you are attending GIS. Please come to a meeting and bring your assistant, bring your spouse, bring a friend, bring a neighbor, or just bring yourself. We want to see you. We want you to be part of this great association and this great network of friends and family. See you at a meeting,
Scott

F ROM T HE F IELD BY
JEFF JENSEN GCSAA FIELD STAFF
As we close out 2016, I would like to thank all of the Central California members for their support of GCSAA and my position over the past year. You are a truly remarkable Jeff Jensen group of professionals committed to the betterment of golf. While we continue to face our share of challenges, we have the right people, resources and attitude to address them head on. As we ring in 2017, there are some changes and announcements with GCSAA that you should be aware of: GCSAA recently hired Michael Lee to
serve as Manager of Government Affairs. Michael will work under Chava McKeel and oversee the Grassroots Ambassador Program. Michael previously worked as the State Director for U.S. Senator James Inhofe (chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works) in Oklahoma City, OK where he managed staff in the Senator’s state offices, facilitated meetings/campaign events/ fundraising efforts, monitored district politics and issues, served as the lead interface between the Senator and grassroots organizations in the state and worked with local, state and federal officials. Michael advised the Senator on priority issues such as water infrastructure and transportation. If you have any questions or would like more information on the Grassroots Ambassador Program (open to Class A, B and C members), please don’t hesitate to contact Michael at mlee@gcsaa.org EIFG recently announced that the 2017 Rounds 4 Research auction will take place April 1-9. Rounds 4 Research started in 2012 to generate resources to fund research and help ensure golf’s future. The program has raised $565,000 since its inception. Funds are generated by securing donated rounds of golf (defined as a foursome) from facilities and then made available to the public through a nationwide online auction at biddingforgood.com which has over 650,000 users in its database. Facilities can specify restrictions on the
rounds (including days/times, blackout dates) when making their donation. Eighty percent of the funds that are generated by the donated rounds will go back to the participating chapter for research projects, education and scholarships. The remaining twenty percent will cover administrative, technical and national marketing costs of the program. GCSAA is asking superintendents, PGA Professionals, club managers and owners to consider donating rounds to the auction. Donations can be made online at www.rounds4research.com and your donation will help ensure the long-term future of the game. Once again, thank you for a great 2016 and I look forward to working and playing some golf with all of you in 2017. Have a Happy New Year and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at jjensen@gcsaa.org and follow me on Twitter @GCSAA_SW for daily industry updates.

Woodbridge Golf & Country Club Recognized for Environmental Excellence WOODBRIDGE, CA – Golfers playing at Woodbridge Golf & Country Club have recently noticed the club attracts more wildlife than the typical area golf course. That’s because Woodbridge Golf & Country Club has achieved designation as a "Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary" through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses – a process the club began about two years ago. Jim Husting, Certified Golf Course Superintendent, led the effort to obtain sanctuary designation on the property and is being recognized for Environmental Stewardship by Audubon International. Woodbridge Golf & Country Club is one of 71 golf courses in California and 914 in the world to hold the title of Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. "Woodbridge Golf & Country Club has shown a strong commitment to its environmental program. They are to be commended for their efforts to provide a sanctuary for wildlife on the golf course property," said Tara Donadio, Director of Cooperative Sanctuary Programs at Audubon International. "To reach certification, a course must demonstrate that they are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas," explained Donadio. These categories include: Environmental Planning, Wildlife & Habitat Management, Outreach and Education, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Conservation, and Water Quality Management. “The efforts that led to receiving this certification are a great example of the teamwork and camaraderie between our administration, a volunteer committee led by Member
Bob Stillwell and the Board of Directors. This really shows what a group of passionate people can do with strategic, big-picture efforts,” said Ernie Micelli, General Manager of Woodbridge Golf & Country Club. “Not only does this demonstrate our continual commitment to environmental stewardship, this work also makes our courses more enjoyable for our members, their guests, the community and for the residents living near our courses.” The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, endorsed by the United States Golf Association, provides information and guidance to help golf courses preserve and enhance wildlife habitat and protect natural resources. Golf courses from the United States, Africa, Australia, Canada, Central America, Europe, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia have achieved certification in the program. The 92-year-old Woodbridge Golf & Country Club is located in the heart of Lodi’s wine country and
features 27 distinctive holes on its three championship courses. The private club also features a clubhouse with family dining and social events, fitness classes, a year-round heated swimming pool and seven tennis courts, making it an attractive local destination for both young families and the young at heart. For more information about the club, please contact Kristine Roberson, the club’s Membership Director, at 209-2630115 or kroberson@woodbridgegcc.com. Or visit www.woodbridgegcc.com. Audubon International is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Troy, NY. In addition to golf courses, Audubon International also provides programs for businesses, schools, communities, and new developments with the purpose of delivering high-quality environmental education and facilitating the sustainable management of natural resources.
