Which language do we speak

Switzerland has the distinctive characteristic of having 4 official languages which are, in order: German, French, Italian and Romansch. Yet in our region, you are located right on the linguistic border (marked by the Raspille, a little stream between Sierre and Salgesch) between the French (west) and German (east) speaking areas. So don’t be surprised to find that several places have two names. For example, Sierre is called Siders in German while Salgesch is known as Salquenen in French. Despite this linguistic divide, you shouldn’t however have any communication problems as a great number of inhabitants are capable of speaking several languages. However, in case you need it, this short vocabulary provides you with a few basics.

welcome A great first, with great pride For the first time, the Sierre, Salgesch and surrounding areas Tourist Office has the pleasure of inviting you to discover their region accompanied by a local personality. An ambassador of flavours, an architect of taste, a man of values and inspiration will accompany you through the pages of our tourist information brochure. Originally from Sierre, he declares: “ I feel very close to my home town. It gives me my strength. The verticality of the mountains, the density of the vines, the smell of undergrowth…these surroundings have determined the way I am, the way I live and the way I think.” This man is Didier de Courten. It’s an honour for us to invite him to take part in creating our brochure. Enjoy!

Didier de Courten A land to love Isn’t a certain place, a corner of the earth, more beautiful to look at when those who love the place tell you about it? By editing this brochure, the authors wanted to take you on a journey throughout our region in a different way, they wanted to bring it to life and make you fall in love with it through its rich cultural heritage and its exceptional beauty. Nature which encourages dreams and all kinds of explorations, surprise and pleasure. Sierre and its region embody two facets of the secret dream of all visitors: to live with the benefits of a modern city but without losing touch with country and farming roots. Sierre is a town in the countryside where life is enjoyable, for me it evokes a land which is a source of permanent inspiration. The Swiss capital of wine and sunshine, the slopes adjacent to the town, its exposed hills and the diversity of the minerals, which are considered essential for wine growing, allow a selection of the highest quality wines to be produced, recognised by the greatest wine experts. The market gardening and fruit-growing valley provide me with their gourmet miracles, a great diversity of fruit and vegetables. The mountainous landscape, which is so close, where snowy peaks create mountain lakes, waterfalls and rivers, which in turn offer me a variety of delicate fish. Our pastures, grazed by Hérens breed cattle, fill the udders of our « queens » with rich, fatty and floral milk. This is how cheese, which the whole world envies, comes about. Sierre symbolises a radiant town, I like its tranquillity. I have wonderful memories of walks in the Finges Park, the largest pine forest in Europe, which has met the challenge of being the first Valaisian natural park, a place to live and to explore. I love family walks around Lake Géronde, and fishing on the banks of the little lake. The Château Mercier, the Château de Villa, the Goubing Tower, the Town Hall, the Maison de Courten remind me of its past. The colleges (IT, tourism and art) invite me to believe in the future.

Take your time to relax in our beautiful region! For the magic of today, all these everyday gestures, infinitely precious, and for all those to whom we will be handing over to tomorrow. Welcome to our home, you’ll experience intense emotions here. Didier de Courten

Wine, a way

of life With 786 ha of vines divided into 9,628 plots belonging to 80 cellars, the Sierre, Salgesch and Vicinities region is a leader in wine production in Switzerland.

Useful Info Design your very own wine producing visit! With “Valais Wine Tours“, you can set off to discover Valais’ rich and varied heritage. www.valaiswinetours.com

Far from a simple tourist attraction, wine is a way of life, a daily pleasure. Logically, and over time, Sierre has developed numerous attractions related to wine. “Cultural“ at the museum, “educational” on the Wine Path, wine becomes “pleasure” in cellars, wine shops and cafés/restaurants. When wine tasting, you’ll be amazed by the diversity of our vines (over 50 in Valais) with names as evocative as they are mysterious: for white, Petite Arvine, Fendant, Amigne, Ermitage or Païen and for red, Humagne rouge, Cornalin, Gamay, Pinot Noir or Syrah.

Sierre, Swiss wine capital A symbol of this leadership, since 1993, the region of Sierre benefits from the activities of the VINEA association. As well as organizing the VINEA Swiss wine fair (page 27), it also organises several competitions such as the “Mondial des Pinots“, the “Mondial du Merlot et assemblages“ and the “Grand Prix du Vin Suisse“. Truly a centre of skills and communication, the VINEA Association also coordinates the Swiss wine mobile application. Another argument: the ‘appellation d’origine contrôlée’ from the “Coteaux de Sierre” is the largest in Switzerland.

products Traditionally-made beer Founded in 1997, the traditional brewery “La Sierrvoise” has managed to develop a beer full of character which comes in a variety of types: lager, white, brown ale, dark… All develop their own flavour, an absolute must to try. www.sierrvoise.ch

Rye bread The characteristics of AOC Valaisan rye bread, apart from its ancestral recipe, include the use of special leaven which lengthens the period that the bread remains fresh, giving it a unique acidity. Cracked to perfection because of its long fermentation, it can be savoured with butter and honey as well as with a plate of Valais dried meats. www.paindeseiglevalaisan.ch

AOC bakers in our region: Alcide Epiney SA in Sierre Manor shopping centre in Sierre Chez Zenhäusern in Sierre Jean-Jacques Bitz in Chippis Werner Moreillon in Sierre

Dried meat “IGP Valais dried meat” is a dried, never smoked, product. Coated with a mixture of selected spices (unique to each producer!), the pieces of meat (legs of beef) are left to braise and dry for five to sixteen weeks. They are then pressed several times and they take on their characteristic shape. Accompanied by a glass of Cornalin or Pinot Noir, the meat releases its flavour. www.viandesechee.ch

Cheese Cheese, made in the dairies in Valais villages, are entrusted to specialists to refine them. These true professionals are heirs in the history of cheesemaking, they continue to produce cheese whose quality cannot be matched. Each cheese belongs to a welldefined area, because its name (Anniviers, Bagnes or Simplon – to name but a few!) is carved on the rind. www.raclette-du-valais.ch

Plants The Masserey family from Venthône, official suppliers for the famous “Ricola” sweets and “Bio Alp Tea”, farm ~50’000 m2 of land, grow 35 different species of plants. www.massereyplantes.ch

Chocolate Divine, sensual, profound, sumptuous, powerful, dense, seductive, suggestive, excessive, silky, sweet, luxurious, heavenly. There are no lack of words to describe the delight of chocolate tasting. This magical moment when time stands still, where your senses are stirred and demand more. More and more.
