David Hann @teacherhann teacherhann@gmail.com Ray Mercer TDSB "The MakerBot will change the world!" So says the October 2012 front cover of Wired Magazine. This is a bold pronouncement, and indeed there are signs that the concept of 3D printing does have the potential to be yet another disruptive technology, just like we've seen within the music and film industries, except this time the disruption is occurring in the manufacturing and design sector. But how might it disrupt the classroom? Donview Middle Health & Wellness Academy in the TDSB has a MakerBot, and has started to explore answers to this question! You can see a detailed outline of their project goals and expectations online at http://bit.ly/DVMBot For those who are completely new to this technology, it is like a laser printer or photocopier for 3D objects. And just like you can send text documents from your computer to your printer, you can create a digital 3D design on a computer, convert those 3D design files into machine code and send them to a 3D printer to print out as objects, one layer at a time. We will consider the areas of Critical Thinking & Problem Solving, Collaboration, and Creativity, to discover how this tool might provide avenues for student learning. The tool may be used for a variety of levels. Elementary teachers may run the mechanics of printing as students develop their skills in moving between concrete and abstract math concepts through simple shapes. Middle level students may find themselves analyzing the mistakes in their designs and correcting them as they engage in rapid prototyping using the 3D printer. High school students may work on a collaborative assignment to create geography maps, organic chemistry molecules, or working physics models. Not to mention work in any of the TDJ type technology classes. App generated content at all levels, such as a 3D monster avatar creation app on the iPad may bring digital objects to life in 3D for a game or as part of a stop -motion-animation project within subjects from language to civics to social studies and more. So come check out this fascinating new piece of technology, and join in the discussion: Should it be just another technological tool in a teachers' arsenal? Is it a fad with little relevance beyond making toys and plastic gadgets? Can it increase student engagement and sustain that engagement? What can we do to promote and facilitate good digital citizenship when it comes to issues of copyrights and patents? What other aspects of the DIY Maker movement can be used in the classroom? Surviving the coming world of online learning Donald Philip @DonPhilip5 donphi@gmail.com

University of Toronto, Mississauga We have entered the Knowledge Age and with it, a world of tumultuous change. These upheavals are beginning to be felt in academia, and there is great pressure for change in the way education is run. In particular, there is pressure for teachers to embrace online learning. But what does this mean? Contrary to popular belief, there are a number of different models of online learning, ranging form Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs) such as the Coursera initiative, to discourse-based courses and work in online virtual worlds. In any of these, there are traps for the unwary. This presentation will examine the various forms of online learning and using filters from philosophy and learning theory, examine what is known to be effective and will enhance learning, and what will likely be frustrating and second - or third-rate education. Make it Visible: Using technology to make learning, leading and assessment visible

Room: 207 http://lanyrd.com/schmmb

Michelle Cordy @cordym m.cordy@tvdsb.on.ca Susan Bruyns @sbruyns Thames Valley District School Board A classroom teacher with 1:1 iPads and a tech -enabled principal will present ideas for using technology to make student learning more visible. The second major focus is on assessing and pedagogical documentation in a digital classroom. Come and learn about how iPads and other technology can be used for student learning and for making kid watching a matter of visible listening. Teachers in Ontario are familiar with the Growing Success document and the need for assessment based on conversation, observation and student products. Teachers are also increasingly moving towards personalizing learning in the classroom and creating more opportunities for student voice and choice. Teachers will enjoy hearing a classroom teacher’s tale of challenge and redemption as the old mark sheets fade and are replaced with documentation, both paper and digital, which provide a more substantial picture of student learning . Also from the classroom, hear about how students can document their own learning in digitally mediated ways. From the principal’s perspective you’ll hear about how to use various technologies to make leadership visible and about a school’s journey as they explored innovative ways to use technology to capture student voice. After investigating and sharing visible learning and visible listening we will conclude by discussing ethical issues of data ownership and practical issues of safety and parent communication. This session is for teachers and administrators who want to engage students in dynamic digital learning and be able to appropriately gather rich evidence for assessment as, for and of learning. Participants will leave the session inspired with specific tools and strategies. JK / Kindergarten, Primary / Junior, Intermediate

Redefining Reading for Millennials

Alanna King @ alannaking29@gmail.com

http://lanyrd.com/schdwr

Upper Grand District School Board Every day as a teacher-librarian, I try to match resources to students and students to resources. In the stacks, it’s often quite easy to rely on Dewey and the alphabet for locating material, but when it comes to finding and reading online, the students get bogged down. Often I teach a whole class how to access material online for their assignments, and watch them struggle with the nuances of web material. Even when we open up a Learning Management System (LMS) that directs them to specific hypertext links, they have trouble navigating toolbars and columns. Fundamentally, this comes down to reading skills. As David Warlick (2009) said “Educators should seek to integrate literacy, rather than integrate technology … Computers and the Internet will be an essential part of teaching and learning because they are the tools of contemporary literacy” (p. xiii). As a teacher -librarian I set out to discover what progress, if any, has been made in implementing strategies for teaching reading online. What I discovered is the complexity of interpreting online text is much greater than I anticipated. The complexity of reading online has implications for all of us in the education system. Margot Burnell-Cimba HWDSB Our students have plenty to say and it is imperative that we listen to them! Student voice, however, comes in many different forms and it is important that we honour how our students prefer to express themselves and by which mediums they wish to do so. Some students love to talk in groups, others alone with a voice recorder; some students love to express themselves visually and some love to write; some can work with ambient noise and others cannot. How do we set the stage so that ALL voices are given an opportunity to be expressed and to be heard? In HWDSB, we did just that for hundreds of students physically and virtually from all corners of our district at the Director's Student Voice Forum. Engagement was profound. Learn how to create, and participate in, the ultimate forum environment and framework for students from diverse backgrounds, cultures, ethnicities, levels of engagement (the engaged, the disengaged, the re -engaged), and achievement, to communicate in the ways they feel most comfortable and proficient on the topics that resonate the most with them as individuals and as learners. Creating Your Own Amazing Online Lesson Paul Hatala @ phatala@hwdsb.on.ca

Room: 203 http://lanyrd.com/schhkt

Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board Creating and designing a dynamic online lesson can seem intimidating. Having a consistent look and feel to your lessons, incorporating videos, animations and activities along with self-check assessments without knowing HTML coding can seem like an impossible task. Fear not! There are tools that can help you create an incredible, consistent series of lessons, that reflect good pedagogical practice and will make you look like a superstar! During this workshop, participants will learn how to use a free eLearning-authoring tool (eXe) to create incredible lessons that include not only the content, but activities (such as reflections, CLOZE, self -check quizzes) along the way to engage the learner and have them reflect on their experience. Once the lessons are created, we will then explore how to upload the content into the provincial LMS (Desire2Learn or D2L) to further add to the richness by incorporating tools within the platform and creating opportunities for differentiation. Participants will leave the session having created a solid lesson that they can use immediately in their own classes. Intermediate, Secondary, PostSecondary

Learn how to teach them how to ask good research questions and find accurate information to build their understanding. What are the best tools to successfully record information when the ease of Cut and Paste makes plagiarism easier than ever? It is less about catching them when they do it than providing them with strategies to avoid making the mistake. What are the best ways to practice paraphrasing and re-organizing information to develop their original ideas? We will then investigate a variety of digital tools for presenting what students learned.

Various technologies can be used to make thinking visible. We began exploring blogging within this context, but soon it became apparent that there were more reasons to encourage student blogging than just visible thinking. Blogging allows students to create, rather than just consume. It affords them the opportunity to collaborate and create a community, among other advantages. This session will look at the power of blogging, demonstrate how blogging can be used across various grades, levels and subjects, and discuss the practical issues of student blogging. Questions we will discuss include: How can you get students to buy -in? How can you get students to blog regularly over the course of a semester? How can you evaluate student blogs? How can you avoid pitfalls? General

Creating a Community of Readers via QR Codes: Our Talking Library Project

Room: 208 http://lanyrd.com/schqbm

Christy Wood @woodchristy woodgci@gmail.com WRDSB School libraries are doing a great job of updating their collections with amazing reading material, but still students can struggle to find something to read. To enhance and expand the community of readers in our school we are employing easy to use audio apps to create book reviews recorded by our own students and staff. QR codes linking to the audio are placed on the back of the books themselves and around the library and school highlighting various collections and popular items. With a simple click students can hear people they know talk about books they are considering. Modelling reading by staff of various departments and students creating their own audio reviews helps to bring it together as an interactive and empowering experience. Come see some of the ways we used this technology to facilitate building relationships amongst students, staff and the literature we love. Practical examples for classrooms extensions across departments will also be shared! Primary / Junior, Intermediate, Secondary

You may have seen presentations about our Accelerated Learning Framework at ECOO 11 or ECOO 12 and/or read about it in Michael Fullan’s “Stratosphere” and “Motion Leadership” and want to know how this Framework can help you to improve student learning and achievement. Through a collaborative inquiry process, the Park Manor school community, in Elmira, Ontario, has worked persistently and innovatively to integrate exemplary pedagogy with technology in ways that help develop our students into Global Critical Thinkers Collaborating To Change The World. Also, during this session we will share our technology success criterion, which allows students, educators and administrators a measure to determine how a technological tool, program, application or website impacts student learning. We believe that technology tools, programs, applications and websites can and should be used in concert with rich tasks and exemplary pedagogy in order to develop key 21st century skills such as; creating, communicating, collaborating, thinking critically and citizenship. Moreover, by accelerating the learning of our students, they are able to learn more deeply and demonstrate higher order thinking skills more consistently. The Implementation Impact of an LMS on the Classroom Martha Miller @cstimmiller mmiller@crescentschool.org

Room: 208 http://lanyrd.com/schpyq

Carson McGregor Crescent School In the spring of 2012 we set off on our journey to find a better way for our teachers and students to interact online. One would think that at this point in time this would be something that we could take for granted, but in our school it wasn’t. In conjunction with our BYOD launch for Gr. 7-12’s, we began running a pilot year using a new LMS Haiku. We had hoped to have 10 - 15 teachers give it a try to help in our decision making process but to our great pleasure we ended up with about 60 teachers all using the new LMS regularly and happily! We went from 0 to 80% usage in about 6 months and we haven’t looked back. In this session we’ll talk about how our LMS is used in our Grade 3 - 12 environment. We’ll briefly outline the reasons we felt we needed an LMS and how we selected the best LMS for us. The bulk of the session will be spent giving examples of how our LMS is used by our teachers in the different subject disciplines and environments (BYOD and non-BYOD) and how our IT team helped to support this profound transition to a digitized learning environment. Digital tinkering and playing are vital 21st century skills and students grow in confidence when their imaginative ideas and creations come to life through programming. This seminar covers my flip teaching approach to lessons and how that approach benefits students and helps educators differentiate lessons, resources and discussions with students to help them succeed and learn. Whether one to one or through an online system such as Edmodo, feedback given to students either by a teacher on another student can help to guide evaluators in judging student progress. This session will outline a system that has been working in a grade three classroom for over a year with great results. The experience of the teachers involved in keeping these records may help you when providing descriptive student feedback even if you don’t plan such an implementation. A well-organized list of compiled feed comments will be available. For those interested in how it all works the details of developing wireless remote tablet interfaces to a database on a laptop computer will be explained. Primary / Junior

Creating a Sense of Community For Your Students Stepan Pruchnicky @stepanpruch stepan.pruchnicky@tcdsb.org

Room: 203 http://lanyrd.com/schfkx

If “the smartest person in the room is the room itself”, how do you access and channel all of the “smarts” in the room? Human beings have a need for community. They are relational creatures. Even the quietest members of our classrooms want to be a part of something. They want to be a part of the class. More than ever teacher have the tools to include all types of learners into their classroom community. But how does this look? How do you create gathering spaces for your children? How do you reach out to people outside of your class? How to you include more people into your learning spaces? How do you create a culture and tradition of learning in your class? Digital tools help, but without direction and sound reasons behind them, the tools are useless. Please come prepared to learn a little and hopefully share a little too. Primary / Junior

Tina Ginglo @ tginglo@gmail.com Flick Douglas This session will describe the development of a collaborative learning environment in a grade three classroom where each of the students have had access to their own laptop computer for over a year. Learning to post their work, as well as giving and receiving of positive feedback was an exciting experience for the students. Providing two “Glows” and a “Grow” were important aspects of the comments posted for their peers to read. Following the models given by teachers, students learned to examine more than the surface features of one another’s compositions and research notes. They have learned to think more critically about the underlying ideas and supporting facts. Understanding that the feedback provided by others can help to shape their inquires as well as the presentations produced was an import part of this process. Based on a variety of Grade 5 and Grade 6 themes/topics from the Ontario Science Curriculum, and through the use of current Web 2.0 resources/tools, this initiative allowed students to see their place in their own community and the world at large through a "Science Lens". Through our program, Secondary School Students (SSSs) worked to mentor and advise Elementary School Students (ESSs) towards meaningful knowledge construction related to Science, through building capacity in the NOW (21st) Century. Skills such as Communication, Collaboration, Creation and Critical Thinking were fostered through a Self-Directed, Inquiry/Project-Based Learning approach. Much to consider indeed, this presentation will strive to inform participants of our pedagogical design choices, so that one may implement a similar program using their institutions Learning Management System (LMS) - Moodle, Blackboard, Desire to Learn, Wikis, Blogs and the like. Kevin Honeycutt is a technology integrationist and a staff developer from Central Kansas. He spent 13 years teaching K-12 art and 17 summers leading creative adventure camps for kids of all ages. Kevin now travels the country and the world sharing ideas with educators. His website kevinhoneycutt.orgis a valued treasure house of resources for educators.

Kevin grew up in poverty and attended school in many cities across the United States. As he witnessed education around the country he collected powerful experiences that still influence his conversations and his work with educators. In 1991 he received the Making IT Happen Award which is an internationally recognized awards program for educators and leaders in the field of educational technology integration in K–12 schools. The program identifies and rewards educational technology leaders around the world for their commitment and innovation.

For the past four years he has hosted a creative learning site called ArtSnacks (http://artsnacks.org) where he shares 150+ ten minute drawing videos that support standards curriculum. This social “learning” network is his Petri-dish for learning to mentor teachers and students in virtual environments. He was selected to be in the Apple Distinguished Educator class of 2011 and spends time helping schools that use Apple’s powerful tools get the most out of them for students and teachers.

He is currently serving his ninth year as a Technology Integration Specialist at ESSDACK, an educational service center based in Hutchinson, Kansas. At ESSDACK he researches and designs programs, training and staff development with a strong passion for helping teachers and learners become successful with educational uses of technology. He shares his thinking and learning on his blog Tradigital Learning and in his podcast Driving Questions in Education. He is a school board member in the town of Inman Kansas and is currently serving in his second term. He feels that one of his most important roles is to help vision what the future holds for learners and to help move schools in right, new directions. During his classroom tenure, he developed project-based approaches to learning that infused technology and problem solving skills. He created a film program for kids and developed it into a fully functioning curriculum at the high school level. He co-developed a PBL approach called the Life Practice Model with colleague Ginger Lewman and they provide training and certification in this powerful, student driven approach to learning.

Kevin has developed online safety, anti-bullying and cyber-bullying curriculum which he shares with parents, teachers and students around the country. He certifies instructors in this curriculum and supports trainers as they go out and do this important work. His recent book Don’t Stay Under The Couch Starbuck and The Bully is the centerpiece of his Pre-K6 curriculum. He continues to work with schools to develop innovative, engaging curriculum to better prepare learners for the world they will face when they graduate. He is passionate about meeting the needs of at-risk learners and works with kids in juvenile detention, developing approaches to re-engage the “lost” learner. Kevin travels the country and the world speaking at conferences and working with educators at the grassroots level and likes to promote a “tradigital” approach to education.

Kevin likes to bring his personal life experience and a sense of humour and creativity to the mission of helping prepare 21st century learners!
