Small Business Saturday 6th December 2014
Supporting, inspiring and promoting small businesses Small Business Saturday UK is a non-political, non-commercial, grassroots campaign, which exists to support, inspire and promote small business of all kinds, on the first Saturday in December each year. The campaign encourages businesses to promote themselves and work with other small businesses, and to encourage consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities. Research last year suggested that 48% of consumers were aware of the day and spent in the region of £500m with small businesses! The initiative has attracted the support of leading business organisations including the Federation of Small Businesses, Association of City and Town Management, Association of Convenience Stores, Northern Ireland Independent Retail Trade Association and Ingenious Britain. It has received wide support from all political parties and a number of large corporations too.
“ 48% of consumers were aware of the day and spent in the region of £500m with small businesses! ” American Express founded the successful Small Business Saturday initiative in the U.S. in 2010 and is an active supporter of the programme in the UK.

Plymouth City Council is urging shoppers to join the nation in supporting their local independent retailers as part of this national campaign. Thousands of independent retail and hospitality businesses across the UK will be holding special events and promotions as part of the day, including themed windows, high street festivities, discounts and offers to encourage people to buy from independent shops and boost their profitability on what is thought to be the busiest day for shopping in the lead up to Christmas.

Shoppers in Plymouth are asked to take this day as an opportunity to shop differently by visiting smaller, independent and family owned businesses instead of larger chains and supermarkets. Plymouth has two Business Improvement Districts, in the city centre around 270 businesses are located in the independent quarter of the city, with an additional 100 in the Plymouth City Market, making Plymouth city centre has one of the largest independent quarters in the country. Stefan Krause City Centre Manager explains: “This is a great campaign to promote Plymouth’s small businesses who are making our city centre unique and distinctive as a shopping destination. I am very keen to take up any opportunity to support small businesses in the City Centre.” In the Waterfront area there are over 600 businesses located across the Hoe, Barbican and Royal William Yard. The majority of these are independently owned and run, Sarah O’Leary, Plymouth Waterfront Manager said “Plymouth Waterfront Partnership is supporting this event to highlight just how important small businesses are to our economy and community. I hope shoppers to the city will explore the wide range of shops we have in the waterfront area”.

Tom Dooley
The Final Frontier
“Creating a personalised tee-shirt is more fun than mending a broken washing machine, but it doesn’t leave me much time for fishing”
“Recession? What recession? Find the right business and go for it!”
When we asked FSB member, Steven Towle what made him and his wife June take up such an unusual business as personalised clothing and other such gifts, he told us that it was the chance of dealing with something more creative than dirty washing machines that did the trick. It was the arrival of a home computer and a copy of Corel Draw that led Steven to discover the artistic streak that led him to his new career running the Tom Dooley’s shop for the past thirty-five years. Although he now says, he wouldn’t mind finding a little time away from work for his neglected hobby of fishing.

So says the amazingly positive Julian Shelford, owner of The Final Frontier comic shop. Julian tells us that he doesn’t just sit and wait for people to come to his shop because he also takes his comics to comic and Sci-Fi events, and the footfall for these events is astounding. His shop was among the top forty comic outlets in the world and was one of only three “indies” in the list, and Julian was even nominated for the prestigious Eisner award for his contribution to a line of work that brings pleasure to so many people.

Vinyl Grooves Records
Phoenix Wings Crystals
How one woman’s love for the music of the 50s and 60s led to a much loved career
“Do crystals work? You bet they do! And compassion is not out of date”
Donna first tried her hand selling a mixture of goods in the Barbican, but while most of the stuff stuck in the groove, the records flew off the shelves. This led Donna to move to the pannier market for three years and then to her own lovely West End shop. Now she not only runs her own time machine, selling the vinyl sounds of the past and present, but also the means of playing them. Donna is not entirely stuck in the past herself though, as she also enjoys the music of “Mumford and Sons” – and after checking the group out on YouTube, your reporter is also impressed!
When Roberta’s son-in-law needed a decent job, she asked Gillian Buckland for help, and the crystals Gillian suggested the young man carry in his pocket gave him the confidence he needed to get the job and subsequently, to be happy in his work.

Sasha and Jan later expanded to form Stellium Ltd, for fiction, non-fiction and ebooks, and:
The changes in the bookselling and publishing scene are so profound that some well-known publishing companies now have sizeable investments in non-book activities rather than focusing primarily on books. Zambezi Publishing grew out of Sasha’s career as an author and Jan’s computer skills, by producing horoscope books by the ton, then moving on to publish respected titles in the mind, body, spirit and healthy living genres. They still produce the high quality books our customers love, both in paper and increasingly also as Kindle ebooks. “Stellium also offers excellent self-publishing services, precisely tailored to your requirements, so why not see your dream come true?” It’s so sad to write a novel and leave it gathering dust, and it’s equally sad to allow your life story to fade into obscurity. For a modest outlay, you can bring these things to life. Perhaps you are an artist who could use a truly lovely “showcase book” or maybe you need a technical manual. Stellium can help with every part of the process while holding your hand throughout.
